Several ways to munge an optical drive.....
How many of those will be off balance!?
@JourneymanGeek Morning
@Linker3000: well, about 3 of them
@WilliamHilsum: mess up
... Well, I have seen the small squares, they work surprisingly well... but, the price is annoying
@JourneymanGeek ahh, thanks
well, that's not the normal usage of it, but yay for context
@JourneymanGeek Apart from the techy use: "...it also appears the word munge was in common use in Scotland in the 1940s, and in Yorkshire in the 1950s, as a verb, meaning to munch up into a masticated mess" ie: "Chew up"
00:08
ahh
I missed it :( ... Still have it open?
need 8k more rep to see it!
@Linker3000 Never heard it once! Even tried looking up the definition! Oh well!
(if you have read or watched the song of ice and fire/Game of Thrones, you'd understand ;p)
was it a 1 rep user or someone else?
ahh... :(
00:27
1 rep user, prolly a troll
but a vaguely amusing one
00:46
oh yeah
@WilliamHilsum: Probably waaay back, but Apparently my new school does have MSDNAA
@JourneymanGeek Nice... have fun downloading!
FYI, I have been watching so many Pluralsight videos recently, they are brilliant and you get 90 days for free
nvm
that does seem cool tho
(when i managed to get around to learning to code, proper-like)
Thanks to them, I now payed $20 for 4 licenses of Office 2010 Professional Plus :P
Actual value: $500 each
01:07
lol
@SimonSheehan: i donno if we have that super subsidised pricing here
01:35
eh, i need a hand
what's the proper way to cite a registry location in windows? superuser.com/questions/330971/…
I always write it like a path, i.e.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USBSTOR
and using the code formatting
and %windir should be %windir% if you wanted to be exact :) but meh, it's Friday, I wouldn't care
thanks
fixed XD
heard lots of sighing in the office this morning. guess it's been a long week
not a fan of the avatar drop shadows!
@Journeyman do you do the whole mooncake thing in Singapore as well?
I'm sick of them and they've only really been around a week
01:55
ya
most malls have most of their foyers taken up by them ;p
I end up eating them for breakfast for the next five months
some aren't bad, but the majority are bland and overpriced
02:06
lol
five?
Hey @Gareth, just curious, what is your job anyway?
how many did you get o0
and i have no idea how they last that long
@SimonSheehan tech management at Amazon
they last AGES because they put those weird packets inside that keep them moist
every year I always get way too many

1 hour later…
03:26
oh joy..
superuser.com/users/96346/dowserrorsyeell this user is tripping up my spider-sense (tm)
03:48
Already marked one of their answers as spam
>.<
Are rather: "their answer" (singular)
04:04
@SimonSheehan ROFL.
@Sathya what was that in response to? I'm on a mobile device :p can't tell
@SimonSheehan @Wil's userscript and the image
@Sathya hah, yeah. I'm tempted to install Greasemonkey just for a laugh everytime I visit the site :p
blah
wishes people wouldn't 'edit' answers when they ought to just post their own
@JourneymanGeek reject the edit?
04:09
Or maybe I'll find some more useful scripts from Stackapps
if it is a suggested edit, that is
@Journeyman agreed... Big time. Today I was slightly bothered by it
@Sathya: it is
2 days ago, by Sathya
@WilliamHilsum you need SE Modifications script (the others are optional though) - https://github.com/rchern/StackExchangeScripts
04:10
hm Now i see why... editing the 'right' answer to get a mention of one's own software...
sneaky sneaky
+ few others
I'm not mentioning names, but someone thought it would be a good idea to edit a shopping question from 09" to fit their question on bandwidth throttling. All to avoid posting a question.
It was just... Bothersome.
@Sathya I wish that editors toolkit script would get updated :/
@SimonSheehan I've ported it to the desktop...
@Sathya oh really? How does that work?
Jul 17 at 8:18, by Sathya
@studiohack WIP - try it when you can - Desktop version of Stack Exchange editor toolkit
@SimonSheehan you manually copy + paste the content
04:16
@Sathya pretty cool, I'll try it tomorrow. Just downloaded it to my dropbox so I don't lose it :p
@SimonSheehan sure..
Anyways, off to bed. Cya later everyone
see ya @Simon
04:43
Hope I'm not pissing anyone off this afternoon with my flags...
05:18
@Sathya: shiny. I assume its primarily for case correction?
@JourneymanGeek primarily, but there are some.. other changes:
  txtContent.Text = Regex.Replace(txtContent.Text, @"\bur\b", "your");
            txtContent.Text = Regex.Replace(txtContent.Text, @"\bi( |')","I$1");
            txtContent.Text = Regex.Replace(txtContent.Text, @"\bi ?m\b","I'm");
            txtContent.Text = Regex.Replace(txtContent.Text, @"\bu\b","you");
            txtContent.Text = Regex.Replace(txtContent.Text, @"\bur\b", "your");
            txtContent.Text = Regex.Replace(txtContent.Text, @"\bcud\b", "could");
            txtContent.Text = Regex.Replace(txtContent.Text, @"\bc(o|u)z\b", "because", RegexOptions.IgnoreCase);
@JourneymanGeek available here: github.com/SathyaBhat/StackEd

2 hours later…
07:39
that was quick
@SimonSheehan: don't sleep much, do you? ;p
08:04
morning all
08:20
hello
there are only 114 days left until Christmas.
@Gareth And the UK supermarkets already have their Christmas sweets selections in stock
seriously? haha
that's depressing
hello folks
(if there be any folks here)
hello
@nhinkle hi
08:31
finally got the new computer up and running. installing windows now. fans are a bit loud... i'll have to look at options for insulation or maybe slowing them down
@Journeyman I have the worst sleep schedule :p meant to go 4 hours ago
@SimonSheehan isn't it like 5 AM your time or something?
4:34 currently
@SimonSheehan close enough
when does school start back up for you?
@Sathya hehe! :)
08:35
@nhinkle in 4 days :P
@SimonSheehan hopefully we don't lose you completely then
@nhinkle oh definitely not - I've got a very easy schedule this year, and I won't have much home work from most classes
@SimonSheehan are you starting high school or are you still in middle school?
@nhinkle I'm going into the 11th grade
what? for some reason I thought you were way younger
do we have a user here who's younger who we see a lot? what grade is mark going into?
oooh we've got some beeeaaaautiful 800x600 going on this 1920x1080 monitor. whoo-eee!
08:41
Haha. I'm 16 currently :P
Also, let me upload my schedule..
well i guess that makes me oblivious >.<
apologies
@nhinkle Mark won't say his exactly age, it is around mine :p
looks pretty good
what's "transportation tech"? sounds kinda fun
and how many of these classes is "doing stuff for SU" considered "homework"? :P
It's auto shop. We fix cars :)
Haha. I actually write blog posts during communication tech, I have a lot of free time there :p
It's all photoshop and video editing that takes me minutes, while my classmates often take longer, so I get to do a lot of extra stuff :p
correct me if i'm wrong, but i don't need to use the driver CD that came with my graphics card, right? i can just download them from ATI?
08:45
you're best downloading them from ATI
yep. Screw those manufacturer drivers*

*unless it's a laptop, in which case you are the one who's screwed
Yep. Get the latest from ATI
Figured as much
this is the first desktop build i've done with no optical drive. i installed windows from a flash drive
08:46
@nhinkle it's so much nicer imo
@Gareth yah I found it. installing on a different computer anyhow, i'm not logged into SU over there
I'm signed in on every machine in my home :p
yeah but i literally just booted this computer. i haven't even installed anything but the default drivers
Ah okay. Best to get that stuff out of the way
aww damn. i installed with my SP0 ISO not my SP1 ISO
there goes 3 hours downloading updates
08:49
Or you can be like me and wait a month to update the graphics card, and suffer constant GPU crashes :p
next task: get some wire ties, and make this cable management suck less
brb - time for a snack
Something tells me an entire summer of late nights is not going to go well when school hits
Now that it's 5am, I'll work on that. Night everyone! (again)
bye @SimonSheehan
see you in 5 minutes ;)
see you!
I'm off too now. see you all later
'night @Gareth
09:45
@nhinkle: I tend to use WSUS offline updater to avoid that - tends to save time when all the patching is automagical, and i can download updates ahead of time ;p
@JourneymanGeek yeah but I don't have a server here to run WSUS on
and i usually just use an SP1 disk
lol
it dosen't use wsus
download.wsusoffline.net <- muchly awesome
oh that thing. what a lying name. :P
lol
also installs basic runtimes, office updates, MSSE...
niiceee
it appears that imgur saves png's as jpg's above a certain resolution...
i've decided to start naming computers after space shuttles, in honor of the program being retired
i'll have to rename my laptop
10:07
I edited a question to add formatting and stuff, then someone undoes it and it is difficult to read again! :( superuser.com/posts/331060/revisions
@WilliamHilsum given the close timing it was probably an edit clash
ok, fair enough!
> If you purchase a Traditional Disc retail license of Office Home and Business 2010 or Office Professional 2010, the retail license terms allow you to install, activate, and use Office Home and Business 2010 or Office Professional 2010 on your primary PC and your portable device such as your laptop. - Office 2010 FAQ
hurray! I don't need to buy two copies of Office
oh? that's quite handy
(only applies to Business and Pro editions though. but the home student edition is already licensed for 3 computers)
10:22
well I'll be sticking with '07 for now on the grounds that I'm cheap
@DMA57361 yah... I was running on 2003 until last year. got 2010 with my new laptop. about time for an upgrade
@nhinkle fyi, something that hardly anyone knows... if your office has a good licensing deal, there is a high chance you have home usage rights and can get it for free anyway
@WilliamHilsum well I'm a student, so it's no freebie, but I can get it at a really discounted price
well, i should get to bed. it's after 3 AM here
Ahh, ok! well, goodnight!
'night

2 hours later…
12:41
Morning again.
'ello
Though, morning was a while ago... ;)
:P those damn time zones.
lol
@SimonSheehan: I'm starting to suspect you of being an AI ;p
@JourneymanGeek Perhaps... Programmers are getting good at generating random dialogue that responds to you :P
and that sleeping bit would be a nice touch
12:50
They only programmed limited sleep patterns into me, and the algorithm is very random :/
Or they just set you to torment different parts of the internet during different parts of the day...
naw, the best way to convince a person you're a person is the 'need' to sleep
or accusing someone else of being an AI...
Only slept 2 hours last night, I'll be crashing at 9 today :P
@SimonSheehan am?
@DMA57361 Likely PM.
12:58
only likely?
My sleep is erratic, anything could happen :P
noted ;)
13:20
@SimonSheehan: used to be like that. Sadly the solution was nothing with caffeine after 7pm
and the dog
@JourneymanGeek Haha. Mine's just me needing to force myself to sleep
13:34
Not sure what to make of this question...

Q: differences of OS

user913233what are the difference of Operating Systems?? basically, what makes them unique than the other. when you get down to the lowest level of operating systems such as Linux, Mac, & Windows, what are some of the key differences between them ? Surely there's got to be things like N operating sy...

its not constuctive
and very few people know the low level details of multiple OSes...
Yeah, the answer would probably end up being "WINDOZE SUCKS MAC Sux USE LINUS"
lol
linux has multiple scheduling options
13:37
i enjoy Linux when I can use it
which is not too often
lol
I need to get a working install at some point. I've been messing around with gentoo for too long
Although I've got a machine with it at school that I need to nuke and redo
properly nuke or...
Nuke everything on it :P
securely?
(as opposed to a simple format and install. nuke to me is a full overwrite with zeros wipe at least)
13:42
Its an old machine :P
It wouldn't matter security wise
what's the black one?
The one im talking about
Couldn't even tell you the specs
Something like a 2Ghz intel single core, 1GB RAM
what OS?
ahh
13:44
Hi!
Currently Ubuntu, which i didn't install
Some kid came in, installed Ubuntu, then never told us the password
lol
single user mode!
So i'm removing it and using Arch, building it up to just audio recording
whatsup
i've broken into my own system once or twice. its good fun
or or...
13:44
@BloodPhilia Hey! Just discussing ancient computers :P
i mean, if you're going to nuke it, you might as well have a little fun
Im wishing I had at least a Raid 1 config ):
@JourneymanGeek The Mac is part of the little cluster I use for video and audio stuff.
haha, yep
13:46
sadly, i don't recognise ubuntu... thought it was OS X on the black box >_>
:P
Nah, these are the OS X machines
emacs and imacs ;p
1.25Ghz PowerPC eMac's
1 iMac only :P
2 Mac mini's
This year we want to get a hexacore for video rendering
PPC just doesn't cut it anymore :/
We can't build our own machine though
This looked like a big advertisement.. superuser.com/posts/331007/revisions

Q: Why would moving from anything Microsoft be such a good idéa

Marcus HanssonThe owner of the company I´m working at is on a rampage: She is moving to saving as much money as possible, which means pulling Microsoft Office and other licenses from the ordinary deadly non-administrative-, non-IT-people. What I want is great, compelling reasons to why moving from expensive ...

14:02
Wow, when did we get weird funky popouts when you mouse-over someones name?
@Mokubai yesterday or the day before
they're quite spiffy
Shows how much attention I pay ;)
Seems to be a minimum 2k rep for it to trigger on your name
I read 1k, but you need to have something in the "about me" box too
That would make sense
Downloading Arch to run on Virtualbox.. need to figure out how to get this thing going so I can replicate it at school
14:20
Some good guides on the Arch wiki iirc
I got a headless LAMP server running with Arch ages ago
Arch Wiki is brilliant, I love that it can really be used for any linux flavour
My favourite Linux distro was Gentoo, but I suspect if I needed Linux again Arch would be the way I'd go
I was born and raised on Fedora :P
Sadly I was raised on Atari, then Amiga, then Windows...
With a bit of linux thrown in when I got curious
Had a machine with a 400mhz CPU, and 64MB of RAM. Ran Fedora Core 2 :P
When I was... 7 i think
or 8
14:28
And I'm still unconvinced by Linux.
My first Windoze machine was a 200MHz jobbie
Back when I was a little rugrat we had 8MHz CPUs
Mine was 800mhz Windows 98 :P
well you've been around to see all the big hardware changes and stuff :P
Aye, been around to see the (long overdue) death of many technologies...
I was a few years late :P
14:31
And the few false starts that seemed to be the incoming USB standard...
It didn't always work as well as it does now
I do wish I could have grown up seeing it all
The last 10 years has changed a lot, but not quite like 1990-2000
If you plugged in a device before installing drivers you occasionally had to go to the manufacturer and look for their "driver nuke" program.
The last few years seem to have been the most pointless, what with Web 2.0 and the rise of "social networking", and games all advancing towards the chest-high wall shotting gallery tedium. It just seems that not much has happened except to advance much... except the desire to grab what money you can from people
Personally, I blame Apple.
The only companies that really seem to be innovating are the CPU and graphics card manufacturers.
14:50
@Mokubai, I see we're still following each other around...

Q: Request to Re-Open Question #331125

Marcus HanssonThe question: Why would moving from anything Microsoft be such a good idea? According to @Random (who closed it) it was due to the likelyness of it 'solicit opinion, debate, arguments, polling, or extended discussion'. This is clearly not the case. I explicitly said (please, look at the first ...

You posted your answer about 10 secs before mine.
@SimonSheehan My first PC (at work) was the original, twin floppy IBM PC in 1981!
@Linker3000 Yeah, are you looking through my window or something, waiting for me to click post?
@Linker3000 Oh wow :O That's crazy. I never experienced floppies :(
Ok, this just in: I'll be moving to Bangalore soon.
@SimonSheehan Now I feel old! My first actual computer experience was in 1979 - a Commodore PET at school + we had some UK101s we put together - pics when I find some...
@Sathya Wow, cool.
14:54
UK101 - solder it together yourself!
@Linker3000 AHHHHH, NOOOOOOO
@Linker3000 I feel young all of a sudden :o
Hmmm, part of me suspects that this guy simply didn't want to give the correct answer to Daniel Beck
@SimonSheehan I feel old, it wasn't that long ago that I was working on boards like that
@Mokubai I'm waiting to see what comeback I get!
The first ever computer for which I wrote a program!
@Linker3000 Looks all shiney and new!
I bet it would play Angry Birds quite well
15:01
Heh - "irritated block-graphics" more like
Angry Pong!
@Sathya Following your work or other good reasons? (hope it goes well either way)
Oh that would be awesome retro gaming right there
@Linker3000 following work
my first system was an XT clone
the sad thing is, at some point i'll likely be able to get a 35 dollar system better than the first system i ever built...
(PII 233, can't remember how much ram..)
15:04
Yeah, it worries me that any given mobile phone these days has more power than my first "real" computer
why in the world is taskhost.exe spiking my CPU to 25%?
Maybe it feels like having a run? badum-tish
@Sathya Quad-core system?
@Mokubai lol
@Mokubai dual-core w/HT
@Mokubai: got my eyes on the raspberrypi, seems to be a VERY interesting system
@Sathya The interwebs is not helpful about taskhost, apparently Process Explorer might help
@JourneymanGeek I keep seeing bits about that, but no real information
All I can see it that it looks like a tablet-pc type device without the screen or anything...
15:11
@Mokubai: hense seems
well, ARM SOC + TV out + HDMI, can be powered off 6 volts, and will run debian+lxde most likely
Seems that ARM processors may take over the world...
lol
they already have
pretty much everything that's not a x86 system is one
@JourneymanGeek Will probably get a Pi to have a play.
Can't remember who posted it but saw the Pi playing Quake 3
its on their blog
15:13
Will be a bit tiny compared to my current stuff (rack 1 of 4)
..but probably more interesting!
@Linker3000: its a bit tiny compared to my current dual laptop setup as well ;p
I expect the backups will take much less time too!
@Linker3000 hypnotized by blinkenlights
It's scary - the bright blob in the middle is a power LED for one if the systems and it's red so we have to keep doing a double take to make sure it's not an error light from one of the arrays. I keep debating whether to change it or just tape it over!
I'd open the unit up and replace it with a blue LED
Or one of those party multicolour blinky LEDs, just for giggles
15:19
I need a machine that goes 'ping'
LOL
The most expensive machine in the hospital...
@Linker3000: backups? (i keed i keed)
hmm
actually..
wonders if its worth reinstalling everything to move from windows 7 32 bit to 64 bit
I love the "Aggressive Corporate Takeover" skit from that film
@JourneymanGeek How much memory on mobo and graphics card?
15:22
integrated graphics, 4 gb
@JourneymanGeek Our tape backups take 4 days to run through a single cycle! They're 'backed up' by daily diffs to a disk array to cover the period. Crazy.
Hmmm. Definitely worth it if you were using dedicated graphics, probably still make slightly better use of the processor on 64-bit...
@Mokubai: the big pain is reinstalling/installing the drivers and other stuff the system comes with. Least with thinkpads its easy to find
Mandatory for all youngsters to watch:
if there was some way to magically switch architectures..
15:25
YES
GOT X WORKING
WOOOOHOOOOOO
@SimonSheehan What's that then?
You know, X.org
@SimonSheehan: least with arch, you don't get told to set up the kernel a certain way... then 'no wait, you need these too!' to get x working...
@JourneymanGeek Indeed, wasn't too bad. Now to just auto start it..
15:28
Ah, getting X up and running can be an interesting experience.
It was quite the experience today
15:39
@Mokubai good idea, I'll do tha tnext time.
15:50
@Sathya Congratulations? ... Well, good luck!
@Linker3000 Nice!... What do you make of the Qnap? I have seen good reviews, but, nothing beats first hand experience!?
@WilliamHilsum thanks!
@WilliamHilsum It's been chugging along fine for as long as I have been here - about 9 months - without any issues. We have another on site #2 and it's behaved likewise. The QNAP stuff is not bad for the price but the beastie with the shiny red LED is a storage server that we made up ourselves in a 2U case that came with 6 caddy bays and all the trays - this allowed us to have something with a bit more CPU power for less dosh. The case and PSU were about £270 - linky when I find it....
Such a hard one! If I had my way, I would always just buy rackmount cases, a load of drives and load openfiler or freenas on... but... I am just worried about something failing.. Off the shelf NASs just seem simpler to sell
