Hi guys
Is there some software that will let me see all the people connected to our wi fi router?
and how much of data flows through each device in the network

@PatoSáinz: AMD's 'core' count is a bit odd though, they have some components shared, so its kinda close to hyperthreading

This is why we keep backups
@JourneymanGeek it's funny how we have a whole spectrum of different architectures for multiprocessing these days, ranging from totally independent CPUs that aren't even cache coherent, to cores within a CPU that are cache coherent for L2 and L3 but not L1, to hyperthreading where it's wholly cache coherent but with separate pipelines
@allquixotic: and yet they're the 'same architecture'
I guess you could even add on clusters (which are basically what huge supercomputers are, too) onto that list as another entry that's even more independent than the multi-CPU case
I donno. clusters have very different interconnects
@JourneymanGeek only difference between a non-supercomputer cluster, and a supercomputer cluster, is that the latter has interconnects which rival QPI in speed, while a non-supercomputer cluster typically uses high-end ethernet
05:44
@allquixotic: oh was meaning cluster versus MP/MC systems

@Sajeetharan wat
Photoshop is for graphical design - it is a raster image editing program.
Unless you're looking for employment in graphic design, you probably want some kind of page layout format.
@Bob Ya i want to make my cv as a image file, will the recruiters consider?
Bob
Bob
06:08
LaTeX is common in the academic world.
why do you want it as an image?
Bob
Bob
InDesign is used professionally to design PDFs.

@Sajeetharan do they expect your cv in a photoshop file?
Bob

pdf would be better
@Braiam one of the recruiter have asked me to reduce my cv into one page
Bob

Unless you're looking for a job in graphics design, don't submit your resume with a ridiculous amount of graphics.
@Sajeetharan Then don't use that recruiter.
so i when i searched on google for 1 page cv, all of them were in psd

Bob

Oh wait.
there, ladies and gentlemen, is a prime example of the XY problem
Bob

@Sajeetharan Depends on your country.
In the US, CV == resume. And is long.
In other countries, CV is short, like a one-page cover letter.
the recruiter is from UK
Bob
Bob
06:10
The actual resume should be long.
And you should not use Photoshop unless you intend to do graphic design
Just... don't.
There, I've said it three times.
@Sajeetharan last 2-3 jobs of relevance, only relevant titles, secondary has to go or reduced to single lines

A curriculum vitae (CV) provides an overview of a person's experience and other qualifications. In some countries, a CV is typically the first item that a potential employer encounters regarding the job seeker and is typically used to screen applicants, often followed by an interview, when seeking employment. Use In the United Kingdom, most Commonwealth countries, and Ireland, a CV is short (usually a maximum of two sides of A4 paper), and therefore contains only a summary of the job seeker's employment history, qualifications, education, and some personal information. It is often upd...

@allquixotic dedidirect not working out?
I thought you were happy with them?
@Bob delimiter have a 50% off recurring coupon (for the life of your server) for purchases made in April, and hefty discounts for yearly plans. dedidirect wasn't working out, no. apparently the DC they operate out of mistakenly pinned my buddy's server as a spammer or something (but my buddy found no evidence of malware being installed etc) and the dedidirect guy hasn't un-null-routed the IP after 5 requests over 3 days

Price? Specs?
$49/mo in either Atlanta, GA or New York state... dual L5520, 24GB RAM, 1 TB disk, 20 TB bandwidth, gigabit port, hardware RAID controller, HP DL160 or BL460C chassis
that $49/mo is if you pay up for a year in advance and use their recurring 50% off coupon
so far I've learned that their support techs are on site 24/7, but at least on a weekend, getting a response to a ticket takes about 90 minutes... I don't find that unacceptable at all considering the price and the time of day. their site says 24/7 support
provisioning surprisingly only took 2 hours; for budget dedis like this you can usually expect multi-day setup times
according to IPMI, the server's been powered on for like 890 days... it's not a brand new server, but it's comparatively a spring chicken; I'm sure the CPU and RAM and mobo have years left in them
and hardware failures are almost always covered for free by the hosting provider in these situations
will have to check the HDD's age later though, may not be too comfortable if the disk is as old as the whole system
2.4 years of powered on time for a SATA Western Digital disk would not inspire confidence
I just removed and packed up the DOID today
Need to talk to my mom about getting it over to my cousin in india.

I was recently having problems with package installations and I found out that my / was 100% used up and unfortunately I had allocated only 300mb for /.
so I created a new 2.9 Gib partition and copied all files to new this partion.
later I deleted my old root partition.
I changed UUID in fstab in new partition but forgot to change this value in /boot/grub/menu.lst
cat /proc/cmdline shows the boot parameters passed to initramfs as old root partitions UUID
now iam stuck at ash (basic shell utility from debian ) since it can not see root partition.
(initramfs)
I can not locate "/boot/grub/menu.lst" from live cd.
what do I do ?
10:47
reinstall?

@JourneymanGeek It is Carmack.
IIRC, that monitor is something like a 30" flat CRT and cost a small fortune at the time.

A: How can I fix/install/reinstall grub?

terdonSo, it sounds like you have not installed a boot loader (e.g. grub) on the disk. This means that although you have a valid OS on it, there is no way to boot it and so you can't use it. You need to attach the HDD to a working computer (you can use a live CD), set up a chroot environment and insta...

@JourneymanGeek Why?
@terdon: I'm pretty certain its a setup for a spammy answer
@JourneymanGeek Ah, OK, that I will believe. I thought you found it interesting.
in fact... groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/… (the spam, oh the spammity spam)
I wouldn't be surprised if we found one of the answers there
now, the fun way to solve this would be to have a canonical PST repair question with non spammy answers, and just immediately close all these as dupes

@Bob except that usually when I see a "dual-L5520" it's way more than $50... remember, these are Nehalems; the typical $50 value server is Core2 era
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic I've seen a few at $50.
Mentioned them in this chat, actually.
@Bob with how much RAM though?
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic 24 GB
And another one: lowendbox.com/blog/…
@Bob I'm really surprised this configuration is so common -- I thought $50 for Core2 Xeons was good value
@allquixotic: someone got rid of a shitton of them I am told
14:15
I just hope the service at DelimiterVPS is good. so far it's fine; I'm not expecting 15 minute SLA response times to tickets like Softlayer
so they ended up going really cheap

@JourneymanGeek Facebook.
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic I've actually had good response times from WI.

also, the hardware RAID serves no purpose unless I pay for at least one additional HDD :P
right now it's a single disk
Bob
Bob
14:17
@allquixotic Then there's jokes like this: webhostingtalk.com/…
> high performance
> DED Level-1
•1 GB RAM
•2 x 160 GB Disk
•AMD 3700+ CPU
•5000 GB Monthly Traffic

I wouldn't even pay $5/month!
@Bob: its only a matter of time before someone builds a raspi-card blade server system ;p

Bob
14:19
A VPS with CPU limits would be better!
@JourneymanGeek They already exist...
@Bob: I don't mean an array of raspis, I mean the new form factor they released
Bob
Bob
And then there's this one, the top of their "premium dedicated servers" (managed):
> DED Level-8
•24 GB RAM
•1.5TB SATA + 2x300GB SAS + 120GB SSD Storage
•Core i7 990 CPU
•5000 GB Monthly Traffic
•1 IP Address
•Price - $ 209.99
@Bob wow.
Bob
Bob
Can they not afford a proper server CPU?
;p
990...
thats what
5 generations?
14:20
@Bob apparently with $209.99/month they can't afford it
@JourneymanGeek i7-990 is Nehalem
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic They're managed, yes. But I'm struggling to think of what these could be used for.
Nehalems are fine for dedis, but most people want Xeon for cache
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic And ECC.
Considering the 85W TDP on those cheaper AMD procs...
@Bob unixy has similar overpriced servers, but their low-end is at least like 2 GB of RAM
Bob
Bob
14:21
They'd be better off getting some Haswell Xeons and virtualising the damn things.
unixy is basically hiring an IT guy... oh, and a bad server too :P

The power savings would probably pay for it in a year.
maybe they're not paying seperately for power?

that's a new one
@Bob DelimiterVPS is the exact opposite :D you go into their control panel and you can actually ask it from the web control panel to install basically any version of Windows Server (as well as a bunch of modern Linuxes)... it even configures the IP for you :D
it's quite nice :D one of the things they did really well
presumably they have some way to automatically load the Windows install media over their internal network to the KVM-over-IP, and tell it to do some kind of automated install
I'd expect that kind of function... for a VPS, but not for a dedi
Y ORACLE.
ORACLE PLS.
i can't even imagine what GUI framework they must be using to get a GUI that looks like that... why is the background a color that was popular last in Windows 95? why is the progress bar so weird? oh god.. don't tell me... Swing

@Hennes oh god... last night, I had a dream there was a nuclear attack :(
heard the sirens and me and my family bolted down to the basement as fast as we could... we didn't hear anything but we stayed down there... I had my phone and somehow the data was working so I went to the news, and they were showing the position of the nukes coming down on a weather map, like this is an ordinary thing
15:34

heck even if it was a smallish nuke I'd suffer from the fallout
