I'm leaning towards a Note 8.
@AaronHall: I'd guess at worst, LTE channels
but yeah, I have an unlocked phone and in most places its a matter of slapping in a sim card
01:18
@Bob I tend to get off brand ones from the text-book store ;p
@ThatBrazilianGuy @MinatoNamikaze: As I told @allquixotic : I'm pretty sure android screen cast is miracast
Can't entirely be arsed to get a dongle to test

@Bob: I think I got 3 pads for a few bucks ;p
and they last me ages
03:00
@JourneymanGeek still there?
oh cool! So if I get this, you think I could do what I propose? amazon.com/T311-8-0-Unlocked-International-Warranty/dp/…
03:17
@JourneymanGeek what's LTE? 4G?
What did you mean by channels?
Basically different providers in the US use different segments of allowed bandwidth
so you may want to do a quick google and make sure the note8 works with your provider
I'm still on 3g so I'm a little blurry on the details
I think we're going to go with TMobile because we rarely leave the city.
2100 mhz is the frequency I understand I need.
@JourneymanGeek think I'll regret it?
probably not. No one's ever regretted doing research though ;p
03:25
I've been looking into it for weeks. I'm wanting to pull the trigger
Clippy is offering to help me pull the trigger.
But the search result had no relevance. :D
Nagging doubt is that the TMobile sales guy acted like their tablets (they were selling in the store, and I'm sure they're right about those...) couldn't have regular cell phone service, but they were trying to sell them with just pure data plans. I don't know if I've figured out how to hack the system or if there's a trick I've missed.
But if I buy a phone that advertises the technology required, and I buy the service with the sim card, how can I screw it up?
@JourneymanGeek you follow?
You probably can't. I was under the impression most 3g android devices do do phonecalls
I want to pull the trigger so bad. Wife is calling me to bed. I'm going to click buy, I think.
Thanks for the feedback, Journeyman.
though you'd want a headset, holding a 7-8 inch device makes you look silly
it should do phonecalls
I don't intend to use it as a phone enough to worry about looking silly.
I just want the functionality so I can just have the one device.
I am thinking I want the Note though, 2GB RAM versus 1.5 GB RAM

Q: Monday morning mistake: sudo rm -rf --no-preserve-root /

Jonas NielsenHere's a an entertaining tragedy. This morning I was doing a bit of maintenance on my production server, when I mistakenly executed the following command: sudo rm -rf --no-preserve-root /mnt/hetznerbackup / I didn't spot the last before / and a few seconds later, when warnings was flooding my c...

Wat?
How can you do that mistakenly?
;p
The keys are right next to each other?
@JourneymanGeek lol, just read that comment ;D

@JourneymanGeek Hero 616s also arrived.
Again, writes surprisingly nicely.
Feels a little scratchier than the 366.
Pain in the arse to refill, but it's a massive converter.
Well, not really a converter... this thing doesn't accept cartridges.
Hm.
I appear to have lost 9 Hero 366s :S
08:51
Great advice!
Nice.
But it's all good. The default installation directory is c:\xampp :P
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg ...wtf
Rather than, y'know, giving write permissions, they want you to disable UAC entirely??
@Bob Of course!
Bob
Bob
Heck, the installer is usually runing with higher privileges and can set the permissions anyway; some installers do that.
@OliverSalzburg I thought the drive root was similarly restricted?
08:55
@Bob So did I. But I guess you just can't write to the root, but the elevated installer can. The application can then later write to the subdirectory. Although, I would have assumed the same to be the case for ProgramFiles
Either way, xampp probably still beats having to set up Apache HTTPD and MySQL on Windows yourself
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg What really annoys me is these are generally the same people saying Linux is more secure.
Whether it is or isn't - encouraging people to disable basic security measures doesn't really help.
@Bob I dunno, last I remember, there also was a XAMPP package for Linux, which installed into /opt...

booooo!
Even though, why would anyone use a third party package like that when there are perfectly fine package available
@OliverSalzburg: They don't know any better.
setting up LAMP is easy
09:02
Indeed
Well, on Linux(-like) systems anyway
I haven't messed with HTTPD/PHP on Windows in a long time
But remote debugging PHP is a joke, as is everything else involving PHP
the L does stand for linux ;p
Wise-ass!
(though, I prefer lighttpd over apache these days)
and postgres over mysql ;p
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Nginx here :P
It was surprisingly easy to set up.
The CMS I'm working with expects/supports Apache HTTPD + MySQL. You can try using anything else, but there are enough problems as it is. So I just roll with it
09:08
@OliverSalzburg: more likely php and mysql
but in any case its not xampp
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg Nginx + PHP-FPM + MySQL works decently (better than httpd, anyway) :\
The only thing you might have trouble with is the lack of .htaccess support.
Which CMS is this, anyway?
@Bob That would only completely break everything

Last week I got an email. Someone commented on a ticket I filed on their bug tracker 8 months ago. The comment was "Do you still have this issue?" As if it was magically fixed
Turns out, yes, the issue still exists
What is the issue? Image sizes are cached in the database and never updated
So when you replace an image on your filesystem, it will always be rendered with the same old dimensions
As in, explicit width and height attributes on the img element
That exists for 8 months now

@JourneymanGeek I like that answer. "Don't run as root when not needed" - how about "don't use --no-preserve-root, there's never a good reason to".
@Bob: and there's never a good reason to ;p
Bob
Bob
If you wanted to wipe out a system, format or shred it.
I really can't think of any circumstance where --no-preserve-root is actually needed.
@Bob Maybe if you chroot'ed?
> TYPO3 CMS native database implementation is based on MySQL. A database abstraction layer allows to run TYPO3 CMS on different database engines like postgres. This is used rather seldom and some core parts and extensions do not fully support this. Your TYPO3 CMS experience might suffer if you choose to install the system on anything different than MySQL.
That abstraction layer hasn't worked since I started using TYPO3 3 years ago. In fact, it breaks the installer

I need to work out how to duplicate this
Its happened a few times at random
Ouch
Luckily, I never experienced that

How to restore malicious file warning in Chrome?
When I download an EXE file Chrome downloads it and then tries automatically to run it, and I get the Windows UAC warning and the option to click Run or Cancel.
This is because I mistakengly (is that a word?) clicked the arrow next to an EXE file and chose to always trust this file type.
Reminder to self: It's "mistakenly" and yes it apparently is a word.
12:22
hm
I'm kinda missing remastersys, I want to rebuild one of my systems and having a bootable backup would be sweet
Don't download File Zilla from Source Forge!!!
There is a redirect attack!
Once you are on the download page for the latest version http://sourceforge.net/projects/filezilla/files/latest/download and the download count down gets to 0 seconds, you will be redirected to something like msi.sourceforgenet.com (I don't remember exact URL, and I don't have the browser history because I'm in Chrome Incognito mode).
OK, it's official now! They are infected!
You get a FileZilla_3.7.3_win32-setup file with the size of 658 KB. Repository says it's a 4.8 MB file.
13:13
False alarm!
Apparently this is one of those pesky ad sponsored online installers!
You can avoid it by clicking the "direct download link" right underneath it.
Or change your download mode to direct download by going to files repository and clicking on the link that says "direct download link off".
Sorry about the false alarm!
Next to viruses, ad-ware is the second thing I most hate in software.
They are only the lesser of two evils.
I wish that the File Zilla team didn't use those darn installers.
13:43
@sammyg this is a known issue with sourceforge. they've succumbed to malware to try and keep profits afloat. unfortunately it's just going to cause all the projects hosted there to move to other hosts
all the companies owned by Dice Holdings, Inc. are trying way too hard to monetize themselves, and are driving away their user base as a result... such foolishness
Hello guys. I thought this is a bad fit for a question, so I thought I come here and ask it on chat.
Slashdot and their new "beta" site

@Assylum Please don't ask to ask; if you simply ask your actual question, we will help you if we know the answer or can help you find it. This is much faster and simpler than asking if it's OK to ask. As a rule, it is always OK to ask in this channel. Please go ahead.
I have a router that supports 2.5ghz wlan and 5ghz wlan with 802.11N and 802.11ac protocol. I have a cheap b+g stick, would upgrading to a N or even AC capable stick offer any benefit? The router is not far from my pc so I do have full power. Just wondering if it is worth the ~40€ to change that stick.
I have a 16k DSL line, so raw bandwidth is a non issue.
@Assylum if you have a USB WLAN adapter that only does 2.4 GHz (it's not 2.5 GHz, by the way, but rather 2.4) -- as the "b+g only" implies -- upgrading to at least dual-band 802.11n will provide a significant benefit
in most urban/suburban environments, or even a rural environment with several people in the household with tech "gadgets" (bluetooth stuff, wifi stuff, miracast, etc etc), the 2.4 GHz band is going to be fairly saturated, so you may experience latency spikes and packet loss at unacceptable levels on that band
the primary benefit of moving to 802.11n or ac is moving to the relatively less-crowded 5 GHz band
13:48
@allquixotic Not really an issue. My router is sitting below the window and where my pc stands he can only receive one other network. So I dont think this is an issue. Or can those other networks interfere even if my stick cannot see them?
there are also protocol improvements related to reliability in 802.11n and ac, but if you have a contested airspace, proto improvements won't help that much
!!tell 14747320 wiki Hidden_node_problem
In wireless networking, the hidden node problem or hidden terminal problem occurs when a node is visible from a wireless access point (AP), but not from other nodes communicating with that AP. This leads to difficulties in media access control. Background Hidden nodes in a wireless network refer to nodes that are out of range of other nodes or a collection of nodes. Take a physical star topology with an access point with many nodes surrounding it in a circular fashion: Each node is within communication range of the AP, but the nodes cannot communicate with each other, as they do not h...
@allquixotic nice bot :D
@Assylum if you aren't currently experiencing noteworthy packet loss or ping spikes with your existing setup, upgrading will only make LAN transfers between different computers on your network faster. if you are experiencing packet loss or ping spikes, moving to 5 GHz band and a newer protocol revision could very well help
@allquixotic okay last question :D. If I upgrade, should I go with N or ac? ac sticks are considerably more expensive, so I guess N would totally suffice? Especially since I really don't need 1Gbit network bandwidth, I have only 1 pc in my home, no laptop, no smartphones etc.
13:53
@Assylum if the minor difference in price is that big of a deal to you, you could probably get by with 802.11n, but it really depends on how severe your network impairments currently are, and what your plans for the future are
for instance if someday you moved the router to another room (or the PC) and they needed to communicate through a wall, the 802.11ac standardized beamforming stuff could be a big benefit
the plan for the future is to buy a new mainboard and plug the LAN cable back in :P
I lost my LAN Device
but gonna take like 6-12 months to save up for it
if it were me and I were having significant network impairments, I'd just go straight for 802.11ac since the router already supports ac -- but then, the difference in cost between an N adapter and an AC adapter isn't really material to me
Yeah to me it is unfortunately :(. I have to think about every euro twice before I buy something. So I probably go with N. I need a new one since the one I have is not mine.
I borrowed it when I lost my LAN Device to have internet at all
Anyway, thanks for the informations man. Really appreciate it :).
