EXTREME PROGRAMMING IS SHOUTING
I was reading a TDWTF article that aptly described how mainframe programmers hit their caps lock key, once, back in 1980 and haven't hit it since

@allquixotic I enjoyed that article.

@PatoSáinz I have used all caps methods before to designate higher levels of a heirarchy. So myself i dont see it badly yet. Like all of my partition names use all caps, and Folders with a lot of crap in subfolders below it are all Caps. My excuse is they do not let me change the font size , so that makes stuff bigger some way.

In the walking dead are the citizens of terminus A) the aliens that perped the virus on the planet B) canibals about to feed on our heros C) nice people sick of being screwed by people like our heros?
I tried to play the activision game The Walking Dead Survival Instinct, and uninstalled it due to the lack of ammo :-) Oh they give ya ammo after you played through once ??? WTF if i was going to play through a second time, I would already know where all the secret passages are and where the "Items" are located.
I think the game suffers from "the developer knows" they know where all that stuff to survive is, but they leave me out there all alone with 2 freaking bullets in a herd of zombies, somehow thinking that I Know where they put the stuff.
So they should reverse the whole play through idea. Give me the ammo Now when I don't know where all the stuff is, and take it all away if i am dumb enough to play through a second time.
04:23
All this could be easily solved if i just read through the 100 page strategy guide , and watch the 13 walkthrough videos. . . instead of actually playing the game :-)

Is Raptr in fact "AMD Gaming Evolved"?
I can't believe this... why would AMD boundle some shit like Raptr in their Catalyst driver download?
I just used the AMD Driver Autodetect tool to download and install latest drivers for an AMD E2 Vision notebook.
The download and installation process was pretty much straight forward, simple, and almost automated without many decisions to be made.
So I don't remember seeing "AMD Gaming Evolved" in the list of components to install.
And most certainly not something like "Raptr".
But I still got this weird looking "AMD Gaming Evolved" splash screen kind of program window coming up each time I reboot. And it seems to have no close button, it just displays some gaming shit like adverts and so on, and I have to kill the process to close that shit down.
Now on third reboot I even got a Windows Warning message, something coming out of UAC I think, asking to allow "Raptr Desktop... something" to run.
WTF? I don't even have "AMD Gaming Evolved" in the Control panel programs and features list. But I do have it in the Metro start screen. Although selecting to Uninstall the app doesn't do anything.
I followed the instruction from the thread above and removed the "Raptr" thing from control panel. It seems to be gone now...
Hopefully it won't bother me again... but what the hell is this? Why would AMD bundle something like this, and install it silently without users consent? I wish they would stop bundling spyware or trialware, or whatever kind of crapware this is. I just asked for drivers, none of this...

@OliverSalzburg hi
how to configure squid to allow outlook
any ideas mate?
@OliverSalzburg i already seen it mate.i have configured and already tried this commands
iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -p TCP --dport 25 -j MASQUERADE
iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -p TCP --dport 110 -j MASQUERADE
added this too
iptables -P INPUT DROP
iptables -A INPUT -m state --state RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT
iptables -A INPUT -i 192.168.5.100 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 22 -j ACCCEPT
iptables -A INPUT -i 192.168.5.100 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 3128 -j ACCCEPT
iptables -A INPUT -i 192.168.5.100 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 25 -j ACCCEPT
iptables -A INPUT -i 192.168.5.100 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 110 -j ACCCEPT
iptables -A INPUT -i lo -j ACCEPT
iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -i 192.168.5.100 -o 192.168.1.100 -j MASQUERADE
08:21
that was amusing. I bought a PCI (not PCIe) gigabit ethernet card (yes, I want one, and I'll test it for science) from what looked like a family run store - Kid at the store "PCI Internet?" "Wait, show me what kinda cable!" then... he asks a middle aged lady (his mom?) where it was....
I totally had a get off my lawn moment
@sammyg: IIRC thats some kind of gaming social network chat thing
@JourneymanGeek any thoughts in this question mate

Q: How to allow squid to grant access for outlook

BlueBerry - vignesh4303i have configured squid at redhat linux 5.4 ,and all my windows networks use 192.168.5.100 and port 3128 as proxy for accessing internet. but while sending and recieving emails at microsoft outlook email client i am not connected to internet. iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -p TCP --dport 25 -j ...

not familiar with squid
@JourneymanGeek hmm..k thanks :)
also
I wonder where's @hacktohell
Our network here at work is currently so shitty that my phone labeled our WiFi AP "Avoided for poor internet connection"
2
And I'm sucking my data plan dry listening to Spotify...
@BlueBerry-vignesh4303 It might be better suited for Server Fault
Unless you're doing this for security purposes, it might make sense to simply not forward HTTPS to squid at all
But I'm really not an expert on that. I just hate HTTP proxies :P
They're nothing but trouble! :D
08:51
@OliverSalzburg: As I said before, wifi is a black art ;p
I'm pricing out converting some of my systems to dualband ;p
09:02
@OliverSalzburg @JourneymanGeek My mistake was probably one of two things. A: I used the AMD Driver Autodetect. B: I stepped through the installation wizard too quickly.
I always do custom installation on all programs. I could only see different .NET Framework distributables, other essential components, and the Catalyst driver. But I may have missed the Gaming Evolution thing. Either that or it just installed in the background because I used the Autodetect installation process.
"Auto-optimization provides the best quality and performance settings for your rig based on data collected from the AMD community."
Right! "Gaming rig!" My AMD E2 gaming rig... duh!
Guys! Is there an x64 version of "Windows8-RT-KB2917499-x86.msu"?
I need to install this update on a x64 Windows 8.0 to get the Windows 8.1 update.

Q: When I have a * entry in my zone file, how can I treat a specific name as nonexistent?

Oliver SalzburgOn our main domain, example.com we're hosting a lot of websites. So we just added a * A/AAAA record to our zone and pointed it at our webserver. Sadly, this also causes Outlook to constantly hammer our webserver, because now autodiscover.example.com points at our webserver. Not only will Outlook...

Very helpful answer to start the day!
Stupid autodiscovery!
!!bababababat
Never mind... got it! I put in x64 in the file name and did a Google search for "Windows8-RT-KB2917499-x64.msu".

Bob
@sammyg You know you could just install it through windows update?
or WSUS Offline if you really need to
googling for the filename is not a particularly secure method
@Bob Don't you mean Windows Store?
Bob
Bob
09:15
@sammyg Hm?
@Bob It's not unsafe if you get it from microsoft.com domain.
"Although the Windows 8.1 update is downloaded and installed from the Store, your PC needs Windows updates, KB 2871389 and KB 2917499, before Windows 8.1 becomes available to you in the Store."
Both x86 and x64 versions of both KBs can be found here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2871389/en-us
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2917499/en-us
Bob
Bob
@sammyg ah, I thought you just downloaded it off a random site
@Bob Nope, I just didn't see the 64 bit version for download. I have 64 bit Windows 8.0 on, freshly installed, so I need the x64 version of both KBs before I can get the Windows 8.1 update through the Windows Store. Otherwise it won't show.
@Bob I haven't used WSUS before. Can you use it to get offline installer for Windows 8.0? That would be awesome.
Since this AMD E2 machine comes with OEM Windows 8.0 it's entitled to the Windows 8.1 udpate. But I had no luck using Windows 8.1 MSDN ISO image to do a clean RTM install on it. I had to use the Windows 8.0 MSDN ISO image.
Because Windows 8.0 SKU is different from Windows 8.1 and the keys are different too.
Now to have a working ISO for clean Windows 8.1 RTM, custom made, with all the latest Windows updates on a single ISO... that would be something worth trying.
Can I do that with WSUS? Or some other tool?
Can I also have it pre-activated? So I don't have problems with SLIC and BIOS key?
09:36
ugh
It looks like sftp transfers over my network are processor bottlenecked
I should have checked this
Wow, it takes a long time to delete stuff via FTP
(I just updated the system to gigabit ethernet ;p)
amusingly enough.... the old fast ethernet interface is... marginally faster
10:27
does slightly better on SMB, but looks like I'm CPU bottlenecked even there
best speed I'm seeing is 300 Mbps on lan speed test
I wonder if there's an even lighter file transfer protocol...
oh wait, the OTHER test is still running
Bob
Bob
10:44
@sammyg WSUS Offline can download updates to an image you can copy around
@JourneymanGeek TFTP? :P
prolly not secure though
lol, security is not a big issue

@JourneymanGeek Two problems with the hero pen.
Turns out, it does dry up a bit if you don't use it for a while (hard to start)
And the cap, as nice as it feels, does tend to pop off in the pocket

I use pens like ordinary people use computers. My pen collection resembles most peoples' computer collection. I have an iPhone 5c (Sharpie Pen) that's reliable and writes nice, and an uninteresting Dell Inspiron 14R (PaperMate InkJoy 300RT ball pen) for faster but messier writing.
I never take them apart, and when they run out of ink, I throw them away
and I don't think there's any practical use to Free and Open Ink Pens (FOIP)
and I haven't donated any money to the FPF (Free Pen Foundation) or the SNS (SNS's Not Sharpie) project
the HP Touchpad running WebOS failed as badly as the Sharpie Pencil though ;p
I'm told they're horrid

@CanadianLuke I believe it doesn't remember when it was "used" between reboots of the instance, and it's rebooting itself daily

@allquixotic I awoke on Wed, 02 Apr 2014 04:00:32 GMT (that's about 12 hours ago), got invoked 2 times, learned 69 commands
the daily reboot cron job is for stability
it remembers learned commands though, that's the good thing
16:21
Is there a formal definition for "app"?
Or is that just a commercial name for a thing that's been around for ages?
16:36
Nah, it's just a name, like how "cloud" => "Internet"
@ThatBrazilianGuy formal? no, but each person or company or organization can come up with a definition that they think captures the sense of the word best in their own mind
for me, I distinguish "apps" from "programs" in that apps are some kind of product -- now, they may be a free product, even an open source product, but the software itself is designed to be convenient to install, "monolithic" (you get one file, whether it's an MSI, EXE, APK, DMG, or whatever), and has some kind of overt user interface
I would actually expand the abbreviation "app" to "appliance" moreso than "application" -- it captures the sense of what apps do better
apps are program-appliances -- while they are surely programs, they have properties that physical appliances (like washing machines and dishwashers) have
a program on the other hand is something like NTOSKRNL.EXE or CSRSS.EXE or (to give a Linux example) sshd -- it is clearly a piece of executable code, but it's not meant for a user to decide to "fire it up" by using a GUI (or even a CLI, really)
a Windows user doesn't say "hmm, time to start up CSRSS!" and a Linux user doesn't say "gotta start sshd" -- in the former case, you can't have Windows at all without it running, and in the latter case, the system startup scripts almost always take care of that for you
SourceTree is most definitely an "app", as the URL aptly puts it
download, click, install, run. VERY app-y
to put it in set theory: the set of all apps is a proper subset of the set of all programs. "every app is a program, but not every program is an app"

@MichaelFrank What part specifically? Do you have a particular question? I don't really have a timeline for any posts anymore
User accounts, access control, etc. I'm familiar with AD, but it seems like you're going Linux?
Well, I have some scripts to help, but I definitely don't follow the "best practices" for editing the users directly ;) If you catch my drift
But yea, I can do that as my next post

1 hour later…
23:45
@MichaelFrank Done. Next post, I'll do adding users and show off some scripts
