"To me, this is just passing an argument. I must have misunderstood the point?" Nope. You got it. That's "dependency injection". Now see what other crazy jargon you can come up with for simple concepts, it's fun! — Eric Lippert 9 hours ago

@allquixotic amusingly I know someone who works for them online. Naturally he won't admit the whole system is broken.
I mean, I know him online
00:49
damn it
the sega bundle looks shiny
01:18
Hi all. Any of the resident OSX experts have a minute?
@terdon That depends. Did you solve that one website in OS X??
@ThatBrazilianGuy that one website?
ah
gotcha\
Yeah. I have the exact same issue as you with my Mac. I've tried everything but just can't access one website and only on my mac. Did you solve it?
@ThatBrazilianGuy no, going to read it now. I'm just wondering about this:
0
Q: Why do interactive shells on OSX source *profile* files?

terdonIn Linux and, to my knowledge, all Unix systems, terminal emulators run interactive, non-login shells by default. This means that, for bash, the started shell will: When an interactive shell that is not a login shell is started, bash reads and executes commands from /etc/bash.bashrc...

And thanks for bringing that gem of a question to my attention :)
IRL (and online as well) I have (very) near-zero mac experience.
01:31
funny thing is, I THINK I know what question he's talking about.
And I think I answered it.
@JourneymanGeek yeah, that narrows it down!
@JourneymanGeek ahh
@ThatBrazilianGuy Don't start that again!
02:03
might have been on SF - some developer needed to flush his cache.

Is there an easy way to clone a few different versions of a git repo in to subfolders? I need to find when something broke and don't want to repeatedly test and then re-checkout.

Can anyone think of a way to figure out if a monitor is powered on when remote accessing a PC?
@Paul You want to know through software if your monitor is powered on?
05:17
@Paul: I asked a question about that some time back....
answer seemed to be no
05:41
@JourneymanGeek Thanks
anyone with windows expert?
@jackopen Diploma?
I've officially changed my username!
Can you guess where it came from?
@damryfbfnetsi Who are you?
@Boris_yo hi

What is unclear about this question:

Q: Siemens PLM NX. a green "SIEMENS" mark recently found that only the letter "s", what that means?

RoySiemens PLM NX 8. at win7 x64,Right side of the user interface title bar, usually with a green "SIEMENS" mark, recently found that only the letter "s", what that means? How to solve?

The titlebar normally has "SIEMENS" in it, now it has "S". It isn't that hard to follow.
is it possible to find file names with operator like "And" or "Or" in windows?
@CanadianLuke This: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002ET1ATU/ref=ox_sc_act_title_8?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A262S395NXGG8Z

Or this? http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CLENRHG/
@jackopen I think possible. I know how to search content of files if you want to know.
@Boris_yo yeah please explain that also
@Boris_yo I'm formerly known as gparyani
content:"*****"
06:00
Have you understood the new username yet?
@Boris_yo i didnt get you
It stands for "declined - a moderator reviewed your flag, but found no evidence to support it"
@Boris_yo windows doesnt take content:
in find
@jackopen It finds files and content
@Boris_yo i think it doesnt work in XP!
06:06
@jackopen You did not tell me it was XP you wanted to know about.
i entereed after clicking Search-->All or part of the file name
ok
any trick for XP?
Not from me
content is the only parameter available in Windows 7/8 find/search function?
i guess windows 7 takes

What font this website uses? How can I use it on my website? wordtracker.com/blog/stuff-we-like-13-march-2014
@Boris_yo font-family: 'Locator Regular', Verdana, Arial, sans-serif;
@OliverSalzburg Thanks but how do I know it would work? I think it is their proprietary font because I once tried specifying certain font I liked about website in my WordPress website and still got default Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif displayed.
@Boris_yo webfonts
09:31
@OliverSalzburg You speak in puzzles like Yoda.
@Boris_yo I'm on the phone with tech support :P
google it
@OliverSalzburg They are beautiful...
But there is no Locator Regular!
What would I use this USB RJ45 for? tinydeal.com/…
@OliverSalzburg 1st Google result?
@Boris_yo: its a USB ethernet device. Its what you'd use to connect a device with USB ports and no ethernet adaptors to ethrnet.
09:39
How can Locator be Roman? Locator is font family and Roman is also font family.
@JourneymanGeek I know but actually wanted your ideas where to use it. In chinese tablet to easily come and setup router or troubleshoot router's problems instead of taking laptop everytime.
@Boris_yo: without a proper terminal, it would be a pain in the arse.
but yeah, if you had the right drivers and USB OTG it should probably work
@JourneymanGeek I meant logging to router's gateway - web-interface to set it up and make changes.
@Boris_yo: see the second line ;p
You'd need drivers to support it,
@JourneymanGeek Downside of USB RJ45 is installation of drivers, indeed and defeats the purpose of full portability.
@Paul How much access you give me :-) I agree with JMG that telling if a monitor has the power on or not is not different to the system. If it was for a project, I could create a scenario where I can determine that my own monitor is not only awake, but powered, By cheating, my monitor has USB ports.
09:46
@Boris_yo: there's a chance you already have the drivers.
@JourneymanGeek Commenter: "It would be a lot more convenient if driver came integrated into device's firmware and not on CD".
that might be a pain in the ass.
@JourneymanGeek Commenter: "I think I know why this device does not work on my tablet. Android 4.0 does not support ethernet."
maybe
it might also be device specific. Even with simple things like mass storage
@JourneymanGeek If tablet is branded then there's higher chance for it to support ethernet, devices etc.?
09:50
Its easier to google to see if it works ;p
@JourneymanGeek I think I read that one of differences between branded and chinese tablets is that latter are focused more on hardware than optimizing it for software and letting out new model after new model into market.
Example but with smartphones: iPhone smartphone has lower specs than some Android smartphone but it runs OS as well as Android device.
With less bugs too.
10:06
@Boris_yo Locator is the font family, Roman is the type
hi guys! I need some help: I have dualboot in this laptop, but Ubuntu is failing to load
I get a bunch load of errors "EXT4-fs error device sda5 ext4_iget:3877"
and ubuntu doesn't load
could someone please help me?
oops, forgot there is a "ask ubuntu" :P
@OliverSalzburg So if Arial is font family, then roman can be its type too?
10:24
@Boris_yo Yes
I guess Arial (Regular) is the Roman type
But I'm not that hardcore into typography :P
What do you think about level of complication and effectiveness of using this?

A: How do I reset the Windows administrator password?

JetThis method is called Sticky Keys Method Boot from Windows PE or Windows Recovery Environment (or use any LiveCD/USB/ ANY Windows installation disk / Anything bootable that can see NTFS/Fat32/...), and run the Command Prompt. Find the drive letter of the partition where Windows is installed...

> It works in ALL WINDOWSES
@Psycogeek Heh, yeah, this one doesn't. Anyhow, the remote person fiddled with the power cable and the monitor came to life.
nuff said
@Psycogeek USB ports in monitor? What for?
10:46
@Boris_yo I did not want them :-) but once they are there i end up using them. problem is using them is rather stupid when switching off the power to the monitor , either by it's own switch or by the power strip, shuts off the USB . soooo they screwed that up IMO.
So i start a loading of a flash chip, using this really convienient port, turn off the monitor to do something else and ARRRGG!
@Boris_yo ahh passwords, i dont get it, it takes longer for me to remember tham than it takes for a hacker to get in :-) why we need that stuff . It's like having a case-lock on a stolen computer, or intrusion detection , on a computer with ports, or like uploading things on the web, once it got that far , its Over :-)
Why we put a Big Lock on a door, when there is a window 3 feet away?
Why humans no put houses undergound ever, then close all the windows anyways?
Why mobile device no work outside?
Whats the point of wireless, if it barely makes it to the next room?
<---- seeks more logical ways to accomplish goal for real.
Weird stuff: Why is my refridgerator indoors when its freezing outside?
If everyone Pumps the heat out of thier homes when its hot outside, doesnt it make it even hotter outside?
Why are your lights on when the sun is up?
11:10
There are perfectly reasonable answers to those questions once you start thinking about it :P
Who really has a Touchscreen for thier windows 9 desktop.
Arent you testing it by now? the ads are up for it
I'm still on 7
Me 2
I am wondering if when it comes out the #8 would become the skip system. The idea being that many people will skip over some of the OSes , to get to the one that is a more refined version of the beta testing one?
Plus eventually (like it or not) progress hits , and the user is forced to move foreward into the drowning pool of quicksand, to keep from becomming a dinasaur frozen in the tundra of change.
(how poetic)
@Psycogeek Buy what for use USB when system is powered off?
@Boris_yo for no use. My system is rarely off, but the monitors go off, and get switched off to save power.
11:36
What back-end is this? Is this just an IRC webchat or what? Looks a bit like Campfire

Q: Put one monitor of a dual monitor windows system into standby

PsycogeekStandby not Disabled! When running 2 monitors on windows 7 or Windows XP, I would like to be able to put one of the monitors at a time into standby. The method can be manual. When running 2 monitors , the second monitor is not always needed, shutting off the monitors own power switch will turn o...

@Psycogeek Congratulations! You've just earned throphy on discovering new global warming factor!
@Boris_yo I live in california, medium density popultion, so its all about local warming factors .
@Psycogeek Oh that's stupid and must not interfere with USB ports functionality. Only when monitor is completely disconnected from power.
@Psycogeek Did you get the chance of visiting Arnold?
@Boris_yo right, a standby power should have been maintained for the monitors USB ports. At least when the monitor is put into what is esentially its own standby using its own power switch (was possible) Both of them did not include that.
11:40
@Psycogeek That's why manufacturer needs to "Think different!"
@Psycogeek If chassis keeps USB power on (there are those that don't though) while computer is in standby, why monitor's won't?
11:58
Ergh... How do you write image to USB thumbdrive? I know how to do this for CDs but not how for flashdrives.
*Bootable image
@Boris_yo win32 disk imager
google it
@OliverSalzburg Wait... Won't this change flashdrive's capacity?
@OliverSalzburg If image size is 3MB, it usually reduces CD capacity to that number in a situation you burn CD.
12:20
@Psycogeek I think this pump's diaphragm got weak:
@Boris_yo So?
Do you think I can open and look inside? Do you see what is wrong with tube that is supposed to be green at the start?
@OliverSalzburg Does same happen with USB thumbdrive?
@Boris_yo Even if it does, why would that matter? I would imagine you care about being able to boot the device. And if you need additional space, resize the created partition
@Boris_yo wheres the fishies?
@OliverSalzburg I once formatted USB storage from 2GB to 512 and could never restore that back to 2GB
12:25
@Boris_yo There's always a way. Usually it involves diskpart ;)
@Psycogeek What do they have to do with this?
@Boris_yo what is the use of the pump if not for fishies? I dont see an O2 inlet or ?
12:50
@Psycogeek There is no air inlet...
Maybe it's covered by bottom plastic plate... I don't know.
It looks awfully old, and parts for Aq pumps i don't know about. but i have been inside just one, and they are certannly not lab grade anything. once the rubber breaks down. I didnt see anything that was fixable. On the other hand, this things is old, has screws. old looking but possibly built better originally.
A person can buy materials for about anything. if they continued with the screw assembly, mayby some of the rubber (flexing parts) could be replaced.
Replace parts with a bike innertube as an example of being able to get hold of materials locally. Then if it is for fishies, there is all the concideration of toxics. nobody cares if the air inside a bike tire is basically toxic.
13:11
@Psycogeek Finding part that fits my pump is also complex...
@OliverSalzburg Mobile data plan?
Then we take the blackened tube, looks bad. Why is it blackened? is it materials breakdown, or could the coils of the winding for either a motor or a electromagnetic solinoid style, or "buzzer" style of movement. if the electric coils are cooked, it might be concidered a lost cause. Even though rewinding any of that stuff is totaly possible. When say like the enamel around the wires is old flaking off, cooked. All of that makes it quite unsafe too.
@ThatBrazilianGuy Google storage
Legagy plan: 20GB / $5 per year
When Google stoped charging per year and started charging per month it got multiple times more expensive.
I suppose probably a lot of people didn't even realize
@Psycogeek I am ordering one from Hong Kong for $4.76 so I could get my hands dirty with current.
13:20
@Boris_yo Yea I would write it off, and buying a POS from china will fix it for sure, for about 2-3 days :-)
Wait, now I realize! You're getting four times the storage paying 20% less! O__o
@Psycogeek POS?
@Boris_yo Piece of Shoddy craftsmaship :-)
@OliverSalzburg You think this one do the job of making USB thumbdrive with image?
@Psycogeek They have materials but do not put efforts in making the most out of them for their products. How long will they have raw materials available before earth punishes them?
@ThatBrazilianGuy wha? he is paying about $24 per year for 5 times the data. that is about the same?
13:27
@Psycogeek Four times. Nothing is the same, I never said that.
@ThatBrazilianGuy well i do not understand the picture. 20G for $5 but shows 15% utalisation of what looks more like 100G total?
@allquixotic Halloey!
How can I make sure this does not happen?
Should I do this in VmWare?
@Psycogeek 86G total. 16 free + 20 paid + 50 because Moto G.
Well, gotta go.
My boss just handed me a Core i7 saying "this machine is too good to have Windows on it, install some Linux"
@ThatBrazilianGuy that makes sence. Have fun.
@ThatBrazilianGuy I hate you (not really, but I'm envious)

@allquixotic You misunderstand. He handed me to work on it and return it to him.
Maybe "handed me" is not the best expression in this case?

Hi guys
I am trying to connect to my PC using laptop with a ethernet cable
is it possible?
wow ms office cartoon hehe
2
where it is gone?
anyway please tell me is it possible or not?
@Mr_Green "connect"? connect and do what exactly?
@JourneymanGeek yes, makes it so the user can't send any commands to the bot
@allquixotic folder sharing
I have huge data which I can't transfer through pendrive
so I though to do this
@Mr_Green: yeah, its possible. There is a question or two on the main site too
I tried this but when I ping the Home PC's ip address in cmd. I don't get any response
but when I ping from my Home PC to laptop it is working fine
it seems to be a one way connection
I am not sure
Home PC is on Windows 7
15:43
@Mr_Green there's no such thing as a one-way connection; you probably just have a firewall rule set up on the "Home PC"
4
A: direct ethernet connection between two wirelessly connected Windows 7 laptops

Journeyman GeekApparently, assuming one of your systems supports autonegotiation the following process will work connect both the systems with an ethernet cable - a plain vanilla one will work with autonegotiation, else you'll need a crossover. Most modern systems support it. You'll need to set up both system...

ping is often turned off in windows
stupid windows
anyway you can set up sharing on the laptop and enable write and transfer data in both directions using the Home PC
troubling me from two days
thanks I will check and let you know

Mr_GreenI am trying to create a Homegroup through my wifi network between my PC (Windows 7) and Office Laptop (Windows 8) When I create a Homegroup network using my PC then I can see all shared files in my laptop but I can't see shared files and even laptop name on my PC. @Mr_Green yea , getting it working first, i understand.
@Utkarsh: You had been suspended an hour before for the same thing. Then you do it again.
and this isn't the fist time you got suspended
@JourneymanGeek but i deleted those before 2-3 secs, you suspended me
You've been warned about constantly deleting your posts too
16:01
yup
Oh Man!
I need to solve this asap.. I am feeling alone because I don't have any knowledge on network administration.
@JourneymanGeek what good tool will you recommend to remove Viruses?
@JourneymanGeek So you say I will be able to test my bootable flashdrive in virtual machine?
@Mr_Green don't even think about a home group; you are way overcomplicating this... just turn on shared folder for your user account (or for a whole drive) on the computer you're able to ping from the other computer, then type in Windows Explorer: \\1.2.3.4\ShareName where 1.2.3.4 is the IP address assigned to the internal NIC of your other computer and ShareName is the name given to the shared folder/drive
it's not rocket science.. you don't need something called a home group to get folder sharing working
those damn things almost never work anyway because the security settings are always so locked down that it won't let it work
16:20
ok I will check this.. thanks
