Mmmm. these Blue Corn Chips are yummy!
You ever installed a legitimate program that has completely taken over your computer before?

define completely taken over

I remember a time, when we had a Windows 98 computer. Ancient Pentium II thing, some Dell POS. I decided I wanted to try out a demo of Graham Gooch Cricket and installed it. Problem was, this was a DOS game and it decided it wanted to be installed in such a way that it booted before Windows could.
@JourneymanGeek that defined enough for you?

1:21 AM
UPS was late today, but the Dragon is here. Images will follow while I wait for Windows 8.1 to initialize.

Bob
@MichaelFrank sounds like what rootkits/bootkits do
not many prevent boot entirely, though

Yea, my dad's IT friend took a look and said it was a very poorly coded installer.

NO OEM KEY STICKER FOR YOU

1:43 AM

Onkyo speakers in a laptop? o.O
Also the misalignment between the ^ and v is bugging me.

@allquixotic I will crush them! Like little cereal box foods :o

The system shipped with Secure Boot disabled, and I get the "SecureBoot isn't configured correctly" watermark. Enabling it in the UEFI settings didn't help.
I'll update the system. support.microsoft.com/kb/2902864

Is that one of those Sager laptops?

1:58 AM
@MichaelFrank Most certainly.
NP8255-S, to be exact.
Pretty much the most powerful 15.6-inch laptop on the market

Looks pretty groovy!

It's built on the Clevo P157SM platform. System is configured with Core i7-4800MQ processor, GeForce GTX 780M graphics, 8 GB of memory, and 750 GB 7200 RPM hard drive. Operating system is Windows 8.1 Pro. The system gets to the lock screen remarkably quickly from a cold boot.
It's by no means cheap. As configured with 3-year warranty, price is US$2173.

So Clevo make these as shells? Then Sager (and I assume other companies) take them and add components?

Some companies like Sager simply build using Clevo chassis and parts without much modification beyond just Sager branding. Others are more willing to change parts of the system
I'm running the first batch of Windows updates now.

cool!

2:20 AM
basically clevo make fairly standard whitebox platforms
some of which are insane, like a dual xeon laptop... with 2 video cards
@MichaelFrank that would

2:35 AM
Just set up the fingerprint reader. Windows 8.1 has native support for biometric devices, so this doesn't have to go through a third-party app.
I've tested it and I can verify I can log onto the Dragon with any of three fingerprints.

That's interesting, because my brothers laptop has Windows 8 on it, but the fingerprint scanner won't do anything after a vanilla install.
@DragonLord did it pick up a swipe? or did you need to activate it in user settings?

@MichaelFrank Yes, I did have to set it up, but it's in Windows settings and not a third-party app the way the HP laptop, the Wyvern, is configured.
@MichaelFrank The system came with the proper drivers preinstalled. On my HP laptop, a full third-party program, the DigitalPersona-based HP SimplePass, not just the Validity Sensors driver, is used. On the Sager, only the Authentec driver is needed.
The Dragon has been updated. The Secure Boot watermark is gone.

@DragonLord is it likely that I'll need to install a third part software on this HP laptop?

@MichaelFrank See windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/… (though this applies to Windows 7). You probably need the correct driver.

I know the Validity Driver is installed, but I guess there is no supporting software

3:19 AM
I asked about a Windows feature on TechNet and why it did something, a guy pretty much said "yeah, it does that" and someone tried to accept as answer
SE > microsoft

Okay, just set up an SMB share that allows the Dragon to access the Wyvern's C: drive. It's set up so that a valid login is required.
The computers can communicate with each other at full Gigabit Ethernet speeds.
Access to the Wyvern's C: drive is read-only.
Norton Internet Security is installed and activated on the Dragon using my existing license key. This is the third of three systems on which it can be activated.
The trick: grab the latest trial version of NIS, hit the Renew link, and enter the license key to convert it to the full version.

Bob
3:54 AM
@DragonLord there's no trick to that...

Preparing Firefox and Steam.

Bob
4:06 AM
@allquixotic how's the snow?
@DragonLord personally, I think I'd just chuck Start8 on there :P
it's an amazingly well done piece of software

@Bob I'd rather get used to the native Windows 8.1 UI.

or just do both.

Bob
@DragonLord Tried that. Don't much like it.
My laptop is still on the win8 one (no 8.1 for me), but I'm heavily considering start8 on there now

I'm going to be AFK for about 30-45 minutes, please stand by...

Hello

4:14 AM
Hi

Regarding this tutorial: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2140410 does anybody know how I can install nc and pv so that I could execute the following command? "nc 127.0.0.1 5555 | pv -i 0.5 > mmcblk0p12.raw"

nc is netcat
don't know about pv

@ekaj is it installed on windows or android?

no
by default, no
it's a windows application though

Bob
4:33 AM
@Meysam you don't need pv
it's just used to show the throughput of a pipe
without it you probably wouldn't get progress reports
if I were to guess, pv is probably short for pipe viewer or something
huh. that was a good guess: ivarch.com/programs/pv.shtml

@Bob Great
@ekaj I installed it. Thank you

Bob
netcat is just used to open a (TCP?) socket on a given host and port and stream data to or from it

@Bob Not having the progress report is a bad thing though...

Bob
there are other ways you could do that if you wanted
@Meysam yea, it could be annoying, especially for bigger transfers
(if it failed, you'd know anyway, but you wouldn't know how much time is left if it hasn't failed/completed yet)
but if you're using cygwin, there is a pv package for it, so just look up how to install cygwin packages
you probably don't need to use cygwin
it's just what they used
but you can open a socket in powershell and stream from that if you wanted :P
a TCP socket is a TCP socket is a TCP socket

@Bob Yes I am using cygwin. Let me see if I can get pv installed on it.

4:40 AM
@Bob it's a very versatile tool

Bob
@ekaj what is? (can't see which you replied to; on mobile)

ah, netcat

Bob
well, it opens a socket and writes STDIN to it and reads it out to STDOUT
versatile? sure. complex? no.
you can do the same thing in a million different ways

I didn't say complex

Bob
netcat is good on *nix, where it's probably already there
on Windows? there's more native ways that aren't too hard
but then I try to avoid cygwin

4:42 AM
it's used a lot to create things like backdoors.

Bob
I consider it a fairly ugly way of working in Windows
SUA was better. too bad they discontinued it.

it's not made for ease of use

Bob
POSIX? sure. but put it on NT, not on Win32
POSIX on top of Win32 is so much abstraction you may as well run a VM

Duh, my windows search index file is 2 gigs and the service isn't even running :/

meh I kinda wanna wipe my computer soon
and resize my partitions.. my VM partition is full =[

4:54 AM
Morning.
This kind of hardware takes me down memory lane. :)

Q: Best config for MySQL InnoDB - Dell 1300 dual 600 with 1gig of RAM

user283724I can't get an import to go past 1.6gig. I have a large 4gig InnoDB table/database I would like to get on my "tried and true" box. Current config on this box I want to work with = Dell PowerEdge 1300 with dual 600MHz CPUs and with 1 GB of RAM. 9GB SCSI drive Windows 2003 R2 Just installed MyS...

My family hasn't had an Intel computer for more than ten years...

Bob
5:12 AM
@DragonLord Blasphemy!

@Bob Huh? How? :-)

Bob
...
It's connected to a USB3 port

Is it a USB3 device?
It was 55 degrees here this time last night
it's now -5

Starting Crysis. It should max out on the Dragon.

It should heat things back up from -5 to +55 ;-)

5:32 AM
At 1366x768 max in windowed mode, 2xAA, it gets four times the framerate of the Wyvern

Hasn't been here in almost two years and is still getting a ton of rep =p superuser.com/users/1931/john-t?tab=reputation

Just started the GPU benchmark at full resolution
The question is still relevant today as it was six years ago: can it run Crysis?
Yes!
50 fps average everything maxed out at 1920x1080 and 2xAA!
Worst-case FPS during the benchmark is 32.6 fps

5:52 AM
I think I got crysis quite a few years back along with some other hardware I bought.
(Two extra games with a graphics card)
I never understood why that game was important.

@Hennes: back in the day, it was pretty hard to get a system that would run it maxed out

@Hennes It was the pinnacle of PC gaming for its day. It had by far the most advanced graphics ever seen, but it pushed PCs to its limits. At the time, there was no practical way to max it out.

The game was very poor though. NO fun at all

it also got memised.
(on the other hand... will it run doom? ;p)

The Dragon definitely runs Crysis--but there's a catch and it seems to be an issue with Windows:

Q: Crysis on Windows 8.1 triggers low-memory warning

DragonLordI just got a new top-of-the-line Sager/Clevo laptop running Windows 8.1 Pro, and it passes the Crysis (2007) benchmark maxed out with flying colors. However, I'm getting low-memory warnings from Windows: Close programs to prevent information loss Your computer is low on memory. Save your...

5:58 AM
Crysis is doomed!
BRB

The system is nowhere near out of RAM. What's going on?

Low on graphics RAM ?

@Hennes No reason for that. The GTX 780M has 4 GB of VRAM.

How much of that is being use by high res ... oh wait. No patterns that big needed o n an old game. Hmm. ponders
But AFK to work fist (07:06 h here)

Bob
O.O
@allquixotic ^ replacing your NUC? :P
@ekaj nah

6:26 AM
lol
oh my god
that looks perfect assuming it runs linux
like proper linux
its interesting how they're co-opting current formfactors ;p
and that its codable in wolfram

Bob
wat
Yes, that is right, but no one sets up the www as a subdomain, where that is something different than the regular domain. It is confusing to call it a subdomain, because of convention, not because it technically is one or not. Though, technically, the www is not the cname either, but that feels too technical for this question. — fredsbend 3 hours ago
@JourneymanGeek apparently it does
sets it up as a subdomain??

yeah, thats pretty neat

Bob
it is a subdomain

@Bob: the guy in question has a very flawed understanding of the concept of a subdomain and a cname.

Bob
> It is confusing to call it a subdomain, because of convention, not because it technically is one or not
I don't even know what that's supposed to mean.
Someone please translate.
@JourneymanGeek ...ya

7:03 AM
Just started running Folding@home on the Dragon. The fans run up to max for both the CPU and GPU but the CPU is holding Turbo clocks of around 3.27 GHz and the system isn't exactly overheating. GPU is running at 82 C and CPU is running at 68 C. Though high, there is enough thermal headroom for this to be sustained continuously.
It helps that the system is on a laptop stand.
It's noisy, yes, but it definitely works.
For now, though, I'm not willing to put so much stress nonstop on a $2000+ computer, so I'll let it run through their current work units and stop (the F@h client is set to "finish" these units).

7:45 AM
@Bob WAT.
that's amazing

Bob
@allquixotic I wonder how its performance compares with, say, an Atom.
Well, looks like it might be at least on par with a Sandy Bridge Pentium..

@Bob: I'm PRETTY sure there was an identical arm board floating around

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ARM => not identical

@Bob: formfactor/rolewise
as I said, intel is doing a VERY clever thing by co-opting existing roles/formfactors
I cannot for the life of me remember what its called :/
ahh yes

wah missed an interesting discussion earlier today :/

7:56 AM
this is what you get for sleeping!
4
@Bob: as I said, essentially identical arm board ;p
same way the Galileo is effectively a x86 aruduino form factored system

Bob
8:22 AM
@JourneymanGeek ;)

8:48 AM
A great thing about the Clevo P157SM is that the battery is mounted away from the hottest areas of the system, the CPU and GPU. This significantly extends the life of the battery, unlike my HP system which has a battery mounted near the HSF assembly.
I've also verified that the Dragon can operate under full load with the battery removed altogether.
I'm worried about replacement battery availability, though. Sager sells a genuine battery for a reasonable $100, but I'm not sure how long that will be available for.

Bob
@DragonLord If you find it reasonable, you may as well buy one now and just keep it in storage.
I'm actually actively cycling three batteries right now.

@Bob Perhaps about a year later, I'll get one, discharge it to about 40-45%, then put it in the fridge for long-term storage until the original battery fails.

Bob
@DragonLord I thought good storage is about 60-80%?
Also, you might want to watch the condensation in the fridge.
Personally, I'd rather store at room temp and just recharge every 3-6 months

Bob
@DragonLord the comments...
> 3) If a battery feels warm, it should be discarded.
ಠ_ಠ

9:02 AM
@Bob The question is a matter of whether the battery is excessively hot during normal operation or is heating up by itself when not connected to a device. The former indicates a possible cell failure which isn't necessarily an immediate danger; the latter is a dangerous condition which can lead to a fire.

Bob
@DragonLord "feels warm" is very subjective and not specific at all

@Bob they cited Duracell, maybe they are just mixing stuff up
or, rather, storage info for Duracell batteries, I can't vouch for the site

9:23 AM
You have to watch that a few times to get all of the details

9:55 AM
has anybody here had the dangerous impossible urge to 'master' 'cygwin'(as in, the tools)?

Bob
nawp
if I want POSIX, I go to a POSIX OS
though I have considered SUA
I personally think trying to squash POSIX on top of W32 is not a great idea
(that's not to say I don't use any unixy tools, just not a full compat layer like cygwin)
the same could be said for WINE, really
O.O
(finally turned up in local news)

10:20 AM
> put his own spin on the tale

I suppose if naked hide and seek catches on, it might spark off a revolution....

I kinda wanna play it now :\
What kind of washing machines do these people have though? Mine wouldn't fit a 20 year old
And which 20 year old has "good" olive oil?
I call lies!

;p
'good' varies.

> Oh no!!! Not the 99c one! Take the 45c one!

precisely!

Why has it never worked for me to attach a physical USB device to a VirtualBox machine? :\
I have a USB HDD here with a CloneZilla image on it and I need to work with it in a VM
So now I have to create an image of the HDD to mount it on my VM as a HDD? wat
And now it has consumed the USB drive and won't release it anymore O___o

@OliverSalzburg I think the appropriate response to this is....
!!No

Worth discussing: top left corner. Fahrenheit.

-16 C?

lol

Two things: a) Fahrenheit is sad. b) That's cold, but just wait until it gets properly windy, and I think you'll find that much colder. :p

@Thor I agree

Bob
1:03 PM
@OliverSalzburg WFM

Bob
> Does not ship to Australia | See details
It's rather sad that I've been trained to look at the shipping before anything else.
@OliverSalzburg You using USB passthrough or raw VDK?
@ekaj Apparently that's my company too!
> bobstshirtcompany

@Bob I guess USB passthrough

Bob
That... should work? :P

But I'm now accessing the drive through SMB and am already in the process of applying the image

Bob
1:07 PM
...applying an image? through SMB? wat?
OH the image is on the HDD!

@Bob Right

Bob
@OliverSalzburg Well then. I think the standard way is to use a shared folder.

And I don't have enough space for the VM HDD on any of my internal (fast) drives. So the VM HDD VDI is on another USB drive :(
@Bob Yeah, I shared the USB drive over SMB and just accessed that in Clonezilla
Almost done :P

@OliverSalzburg 700.39 MB/min?

@Boris_yo That's what it says

1:13 PM
@OliverSalzburg Using USB 2.0?

@Boris_yo Yes

@Boris_yo about 10 MB/s, nothing too surprising. Specially for a USB (2.0) over SMB over a network.

@ThatBrazilianGuy It's all on the same machine actually

Oh, a kludge shortcut to access external storage on virtualbox. I have always just clicked the USB icon and "it just works"... :P

@ThatBrazilianGuy The last time I tried to use it was with a WiFi USB dongle. Didn't work
This USB drive actually registered as a USB->SATA controller
It should work fine with CloneZilla though, as the same software and hardware were used to create the image

1:25 PM
How do I release memory from cache?

@JimmyHoffa heya
it's 2 degrees here... and like 58 in the office lol

You need to sacrifice 2 black chickens at a crossroads on a new moon midnight, along with a brand new stick of ram.....
2
@Boris_yo: you don't, cache will get freed up if you need it.

yeah exactly
releasing memory from cache will actually make the system slower than keeping those pages cached
stop trying to drive your computer like a manual stick shift car
it knows what it's doing
(assuming you're running Vista or later....)

1:59 PM
cache is basically your system using ram thats sitting around chasing its tail for useful things
2

@JourneymanGeek from now on you are required to give all analogies in terms of dog behavior
