@Bob online chat helpdesk?
Macbook webcams can be remotely activated without any sign: In a paper called iSeeYou: Disabling the MacBook Webcam Indicator LED, security researchers Matthew Brocker and Stephen Checkoway explained a method for remotely operating the Isight webcam in Apple's Macbook laptops.

I'm surprised they released VS2013
would've expected them to make it 2014
@Bob heh, yeah, they usually tend to release products in year X with marketing name year X+1
makes it sound futuristic :P when the funny part is that most enthusiasts will buy it in year X (not X+1); it was developed from, say, year X-3 to year X; and late adopters who buy it long after release (say, year X+2) will go "ugh, that's soooo 2013!"

Q: Ethernet to USB adapter vs USB Ethernet card?

AlanI would like to connect two computers so that one is connected on physicall via the "standard ethernet jack" (got lost in the naming, i believe it's 8P8C) and the other will be connected to a USB jack. However, logically they should be communicating via IP. While searching for the adapters, I r...

know what you'll never find in the near future? a 10G Ethernet to USB adapter ;p
maybe a 10G Ethernet to USB4....
maybe with USB 4.0
jinx!
I bet they have GbE to USB3 adapters out now

what's up @allquixotic
Anonymous
how is your office heating scheme going?
@PatoSáinz building mgmt raised the temperature, so we disbanded our OpenCL warmth-generating scheme; but we have our programs ready to run if it ever cools down again
also @allquixotic - I have an old 10 mbps adaptor
its a single specialised chip
Anonymous
@allquixotic quite a creative solution you had there
and yes gig-e -> USB3 adaptors exist
Anonymous
14:23
@allquixotic i'm the office's secretary
@PatoSáinz it would take the cooperation of like 25 people in our office to make a dent in the temperature, given the volume of the work area and the low power nature of our GPUs
but certainly pegging the GPUs produces non-zero amounts of heat, which is better than none
multiplied by 25 it could be noticeable over a few hours
Anonymous
ofc
Anonymous
but just get blankets
but that's unprofessional
i just got a funny idea for making sure that people in a game development office are working and not surfing the web
cut off the heat, and tell them if you want heat, you better be doing 3d modeling or computing or playtesting the game to max out your GPU
and in the summer put the A/C on high
Anonymous
hmm

14:25
or just use webgl
@Psycogeek Oh come one! First lion, now monkey. What's next?
@Boris_yo i was thinking squirrel
@PatoSáinz could use a WebGL invisible widget at the bottom of the homepage of the company ;p
Anonymous
:p
@Psycogeek I think its russian monkey.
14:26
actually a company webmaster at a game dev studio could make thousands of dollars by exploiting company resources >_>
make them mine bitcoin when they visit any page on the company intranet
Anonymous
of course
@Boris_yo you'd be surprised how much it looks like me :-)
Anonymous
it has been done, in a TV station
Anonymous
and it has been done, by implanting it in a game
@Psycogeek You are monkey?
Bob
Bob
14:27
:O
I like this support guy
@Bob: you used the shibboleet code?
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic with a reversible connector? :P
@Boris_yo no i just meant i ride a motorcycle :-) (the helmet)
!!xkcd shibboleet
14:28
@Bob: apparently there's a new USB3 connector like that
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek why not, USB3 has 5x the bandwidth
that xkcd command has to be the most powerful command the bot has; all you have to do is match one keyword for the comic you're looking for
@Bob: hmm, and they only really exist cause of ultrabooks
in every other case there's better alternatives ;p
i had a dream that motorola released a new phone with super-strong "water glass" (wtf is that? don't even ask) and its only connector was thunderbolt... and the first thing i did with it was install and play Planetside 2 (yes, the desktop game, don't ask me how; IT WAS A DREAM)
i guess water glass would be ice o_o
@Psycogeek Do you drink coffee? Does this look interesting? dimtol.myorganogold.com
14:33
@allquixotic perfect, waterglass is a plastic resin that looks like water, it stays somewhat flexable so it would not break easily. it would be a perfect overlay on a amoled sheet. I think you just dreamt up the next gen phone, quick patent it.
Bob

:D
this guy
@Psycogeek o_O
Bob
Bob
called me on the phone
helped me with a different problem I vaguely mentioned
water glass is a thing?
@Bob who does he work for?!
Bob
Bob
Wanted to know if the Intel card is on the whitelist (it is)
he also gave me instructions on installing 8.1 with Ralink drivers
14:37
...an actually helpful HP guy?

is this real life?
@Bob Drivers that previously failed?
Bob

@Boris_yo Ralink drivers are all kinds of fucked up

hm
should I buy the Intel card from Amazon or eBay? decisions, decisions
Ralink + Mediatek = Ratek? what happens if they merge with Realtek? Realratek?
Bob
Bob
approx same price with shipping
ebay is local (Sydney), so it'll probably get here faster
Amazon is a nice big company

What's that, peach-scented router-cleaning fluid?

eh, bought from Amazon
probably a little safer
but it'll take 1-3 weeks longer :(
on the plus side, I'm guaranteed the same chip @allquixotic is happy with :D
@Bob :D
works very well on Linux
14:46
@Bob: I didn't have any issues with my cheap ralink tiny dongle thing
or the ralink on my desktop
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek But Intel is almost guaranteed to be better
Bob
Bob
and Ralink has had very well-known issues with 8.1
dlink on the other hand, needs to be nibbled to death by cats.

...I'm not certain how it's supposed to work, but presumably it's somewhat standard procedure by now
uninstall drivers from device manager & install 8.1 - I did try that last time, it at least got the installation working
Anonymous
Bob
Bob
14:48
then install the drivers from the HP recovery manager
I bought a DX branded one ;p
Anonymous
ew DX
Bob
Bob
haven't tried that before, but that might actually work
price went up a fair bit from what I paid dx.com/p/…
i hate those adapters that are so small that you can never find them, just a few mm bigger than a USB connector
they seem almost impossibly small for something that complex
i guess they use the same form factor of chip as you would slot into a smartphone for wifi or bt, though
14:50
lol
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic the antenna is almost guaranteed to be shit :P
@allquixotic: I have a USB key like that ;p
Bob
Bob
at least you won't be snapping it off
if there even is an antenna
Bob
Bob
14:50
@allquixotic there is. it's a trace on the PCB
parents open my door. then forget.
Bob
Bob
no antenna = no connection
@JourneymanGeek I have a FSF distro of gNewSense on a credit card that connects via USB
it's in my wallet :P
Anonymous
yea, and actually, i checked its power output and it's as strong as otgçher, bigger, antenna/dongle shits

Q: Why does an antenna trace have this shape?

Chris HarrisI'm wondering why an antenna has a board trace that follows a certain "squiggly" shape. This doesn't have to apply to only antennas; I'm sure that there are other components that have changing paths for various reasons, but the antenna usually retains this shape. You can see it on the right in t...

I'm mainly using this for testing my ipv6 wierdness

my one V has been kinda tempremental

this is my primary phone, so yea a moto g makes me happy
@Bob Snapdragon 400. -_- low-end phone
14:56
I'd rather have a Snapdragon S4 Pro than a 400
@Bob it just seems so easy to put a simple covered wire dangling out of these thing to "improve" the antenna. its a laynyard its an antenna its both. (make it glow in the dark so you can find them)
@allquixotic: best low end phone on the market ;p
Anonymous
why are you people complaining about snapdragons and i'm stuck with my bb torch
@Bob I remember you wanted to wait for Ralink to update their driver that could work with Windows 8.1
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic well, I'm happy with my "Dual-core 1.2 GHz Cortex-A9"
14:56
@JourneymanGeek ok, but I don't do low-end phones :P Moto's next flagship phone better freaking be a Snapdragon 800 (or something even better)
Bob
Bob
@Boris_yo that doesn't exactly mean they aren't fucked up, does it? quite the opposite
Anonymous
@Bob i'm happy with my blocking BB OS
@Bob They are not nice in how they treat their workers in sweat-shops.

hm. TI OMAP 4430 chipset
OMAP lolol
14:58
@Psycogeek: there are dongles this size with a full sized antenna
SLOWMAP
or you could hook em up to a satillite dish ;)
@JourneymanGeek a phone using a satellite dish as an antenna....
@allquixotic Get 800
"can you hear me now?!"
Bob
Bob
14:58
@allquixotic the standard S2 had an Exynos
@Bob Exynos are pretty good, but S2 is older
Bob

and it's A9, while Moto G is A7
@JourneymanGeek I think HTC has V, S and one of them is still single core.
