Bob
We need a mod to suspend that account.
none around at the moment :/
Bob
Bob
And possibly email/notify the actual owner...
16:04
which would need the SE devs I suspect
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg You there?
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek I thought mods could see emails?
@OliverSalzburg Could you suspend this guy?
Bob
Bob
He's been wreaking havoc across SE, and it's likely the account has been hacked.
16:05
@Bob: maybe!
@Bob He already collected a lot of flags
I wasn't watching flags though. I have to put stuff on Ebay right now :P
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg yea - but it seems quite likely (especially considering the previous decent questions and recent troll-question on SF) that the account was hacked - would be nicer to the original owner to suspend it rather than let it get flagged/question/answer-blocked into oblivion...
Bob
Bob
huh. the user's been deleted
@JourneymanGeek lol poor thing
16:11
wait whut?

Q: DELETE MY ACCOUNT RIGHT NOW

user2429940I entered an IMAP email into my Outlook (it is not the only email account I have). I then realized, I did not want it in my account so I went to Tools/Account Settings/Email Tab and deleted the file. I rebooted the computer and then re-opened outlook. It is still showing up in the left hand side ...

he is lifting the question body from other legit questions
naw, I mean I thought the user was deleted
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek I thought so too
the link to the user page was erroring...
he probably created a new account?
yeah well, it's ironic
16:23
mm..
doesn't comments one-boxing?
@Braiam It was deleted
ohh

Is it just me or is it HP skimping on the graphics processor? On their top-of-the-line ENVY Phoenix systems, they've always offered top-end Intel CPUs, with Ivy Bridge-E (LGA 2011) processors all the way up to the i7-4960X, and even liquid cooling is standard, but they always seem to skimp on the GPU. They've been better lately, now offering up to a GeForce GTX 770, but can't they offer a 750+ watt PSU and a GTX 780 (or even SLI options)?
@Gowtham: what do you mean?
I can understand the Steam advantage, but what are you trying to say?
@DragonLord Gaben is leading the PC gaming community to the promised land by parting the sea of console ugliness
18:21
Sorry, I was AFK
I can see the advantages here: fair DRM system, outrageous sales (I got Darksiders and Darksiders II with a full set of DLC for less than $25), and a community-friendly approach -- and Valve has an anti-vendor lock-in stance:
#SteamMachine and #SteamOS are designed to avoid #vendorlockin, so that gamers are not at the mercy of console makers http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steam_Machine
Well, I kinda like Steam myself, but there was this one time where they locked my account and I realized that I'm pretty much at their mercy and they can legally lock me out of my account whenever they want
@OliverSalzburg what prompted this incident?
@DragonLord They never really told me, which makes it even worse :D
I just assumed that they assumed that I was sharing my account or something. They asked for proof of purchase for every single game in my library, which is pretty ridiculous
I've sent them the proof for like the last 20 purchases and that was fine
That might have been a false positive from a script that flags suspicious accounts
The only thing relevant to me was that they can just do that for whatever reason. They don't have to tell me why and they don't have to give me my money back for all the games in my library
18:31
Maybe they thought your account was compromised?
It's in that thing where you click "I agree" before you register your account
On a $2000 budget for a desktop PC, is it better to build from parts or buy from an OEM?
I know this is a bit of a silly question, but I do see some advantages for the pre-built system
Ash
Ash
any one know what does " put a bullet on your back" mean ?
@DragonLord You cannot customize pre-built system as much as you can system built from parts.
18:54
@DragonLord With that budget, I'd build my own
You can probably pick parts for a much better machine than what you'd get from an OEM
I have a broken 12-year-old PC at home, and I'm playing with the idea of removing everything and keeping only the case for a new build
The case is full-size ATX, made by Lian Li, with decent cooling built in
@OliverSalzburg or should I get a new case instead?
Cool, I also have a Lian Li :D
@DragonLord I have to say, a new case can be worth it.
The case is ancient, though--it dates back to when Windows XP was new
@DragonLord HERRESY!
XP is still kicking!
I took my sweet time picking out this case and I loved it when I assembled the thing
Screwless design, proper cable management, good fan layout, ...
newegg puts up videos about cases on Youtube where they show all the features. It's pretty neat to get an idea about what you really want
19:04
are you insinuating that buyers don't know what they want @OliverSalzburg?
@Braiam Well, if you didn't get a new case in 12 years, you might not be up to speed about all the new features available ;D
The old power supply is marked as designed for Pentium 4 and is noisy as heck
I'd probably miss USB 3.0 ports
@DragonLord You can get those separately as upgrades sometimes
I got them for my case
I know I can always install a media reader--there's plenty of space on the front panel
one that hooks up to USB 3.0 headers on the motherboard
@DragonLord I wanted to do that as well, even bought the damn thing. But it goes into a 3.5" slot and there are none in the case :D
19:06
Mine turns out to have three such slots
Well, there are some, for HDDs, but those are all contained in the case
@DragonLord That was for hardcore users with 3 floppy drives I assume ;D
I can remove the floppy disk drive and put the media reader in its place
these slots were also used for system monitoring devices
Yeah, what I was trying to say is, new cases don't have slots for floppy drives ;D
Or, at least, it's not guaranteed
Is it still easy to find system monitoring devices that fit into 5.25" slots? The case I'm working with has four such slots, two of which are fitted with PATA optical drives (look at how old this system is)
I'm probably just going to put a generic SATA CD/DVD writer into the top slot
@DragonLord I guess. I don't have any though
19:12
I'm probably better off getting a new case.
The cooling is great, with four fans built in, but the USB 2.0 ports really don't help here.
I'm also concerned about the fans failing in the future given the age of this thing
The reason this system is inoperable is that the 15+ year old Maxtor 12 GB hard drive has finally failed
Scratch that--the hard drive is 14 years old (manufactured in 1999)
Well, just look at a few modern cases and see if an investment would be worth it
19:28
@OliverSalzburg @DragonLord Which Lian Li case model you have mates?
Hold on
@OliverSalzburg This is not Lian Li
@Boris_yo It is
19:31
@DragonLord Looks elegant to me.
The PC-65 was actually one of the best cases out there at the time
LIan Li and Lancool is the same thing
@OliverSalzburg Now you make sense.
That's the newegg video about the case
@OliverSalzburg @DragonLord DragonLord K? You based your username on it right?
19:35
No, no
@DragonLord Would be fitting to get a DragonLord case though, wouldn't it ;)
Is this some sort of hacking attempt on my server?

It didn't say "accepted public key", which would indicate an actual log-in
Should I be worried? (I'm using 4096-bit RSA keys; password authentication is disabled.)
Well, someone was probably trying to log in with a scanner thing
You could install fail2ban. But it doesn't look like something to worry about
I generally don't allow root to log in via SSH
I can't block it because no IP addresses are recorded
@OliverSalzburg How do you know he has scanner?
19:43
@Boris_yo The login attempts appear at regular intervals
The accesses are every 15 minutes, on the minute
@OliverSalzburg Every 15 minutes. These scanners could emulate human behaviour and make their scanning attempts with dynamic delay?
@Boris_yo Yeah, but there is really no point in doing that. The delay is probably to actually get around things like fail2ban
If your goal is to get into the system, you don't need to emulate human behavior
The attack is probably run from another compromised system anyway
4096-bit keys--there's no way they're getting in through SSH
Using a non-standard SSH port is usually the strongest protection ;D
19:50
@OliverSalzburg fail2ban seems not that strong if it can be bypassed. If it could be hard to bypass, the need for human behavior emulation would appear.
@Boris_yo It can be bypassed by waiting. fail2ban usually only places temporary bans. So it slows down an attacker
I've put up 32 auctions on Ebay today. That's a new record for me
So much stuff to get rid of
Who knows about Gogle's Wi-Fi network in Mountain View CA? itworld.com/mobile-wireless/368426/…
@OliverSalzburg In your region? Neitherlands?
@Boris_yo I'll ship it worldwide if you want it ;D But, yes, I put it up on German Ebay
Which is a pity, because most of the stuff is US DVDs :P
I paid crazy money to import the untranslated originals and now probably nobody else wants them :P
@OliverSalzburg If you sell used stuff, must you still pay taxes from your sales on eBay?
@Boris_yo Only if you do it commercially. I guess there is some kind of limit where you would have to declare it as income and pay taxes, but I don't think I'd hit the limit
I pay enough taxes as it is anyway :P
20:07
truewifi.net/wifi/findhotspot A lot of hotspots in Bangkok. Click on dropdown box above the fold. How can people understand such language?
@OliverSalzburg Strange, but if you already bought item when it was new, you surely paid tax already. Why would you pay tax again? Only person you sold to should pay tax.
@Boris_yo Having to pay taxes multiple times is not weird :P I pay income tax before I even get any money for my work, then I pay 19% VAT on anything I buy again
And if you sell your stuff that you own, and you earn a certain amount from it, you have to declare it as income and pay tax again
@Boris_yo he doesn't pay a tax over the same product, but over the profit of the transactions ;)
@OliverSalzburg Why you pay income tax before gettin' paid?
@Boris_yo Because they take it :P
@Boris_yo because he's rich! RICH PEOPLE SHOULD PAY TAXES!
20:10
@OliverSalzburg Yeah sure. Just because I sold 5 used DVDs this year I must hire accountant to open case in tax authorities and file taxes. Logical!
Everybody has to pay income tax. Even when you're old and you receive a pension from the fund you paid into your whole life, you still have to pay income tax again on your pension
@Boris_yo now jokes aside, in my country if you wage over a certain fixed amount you pay a percentage of tax over that amount
@Boris_yo No, you don't need an accountant. You just declare the income when you file your tax return papers
@Braiam Right I forgot. He is NSA mole who gets nice terms.
@OliverSalzburg Tax return? When you get paid certain amount of taxes back after 1 year?
@Boris_yo You file tax return papers to get back some of the tax money you paid
For example, I'm in the highest level of tax payers we have, because I'm not married and I don't have children. So I pay like, let's say 50% in taxes
So when my employer would pay me 4000€, I only receive 2000€
20:14
@OliverSalzburg And while you file for tax return, you declare some things that you got paid for in addition to your official source of income like your job?
@OliverSalzburg Ah shit. Go marry!
And at the end of the year, I can file my tax returns and say "I paid 300€ each month to buy gas for my car to get to work. If I didn't do that, I would not have earned anything. So give me some money back"
And then I would get back like 30€ for each month
Looking for wife to pay less taxes. Call xxx-xxx-xxx-xxx
7
But if I would also declare "Hey, I made 1000€ by selling some old crap on Ebay" then they would be like, "Well, then you don't get the 30€ either!"
@OliverSalzburg That's VAT for gas?
@Boris_yo I also pay VAT for gas, yes, but that's not relevant in this case. Only the total amount matters
I also got money back because I work from home, for example
So I have higher cost of living because I don't go into an office
20:18
since is your darn services bill
@Boris_yo Problem is, wife probably costs more than the taxes ;P
@OliverSalzburg Ahaha
Let me make some changes to advertisement:
Looking for wife to pay my taxes. Call xxx-xxx-xxx-xxx
O-o

Q: How do I make my listing available to international buyers?

Oliver SalzburgWhen I create a listing on my local (German) Ebay, I'm given the option to make it available to international buyers. But to do that, I have to provide shipping costs for each country I want to make it available in. Now, I'm not sure if my listing is actually really only limited to Germany if I ...

Do any of you know something about this?
I'll mail Ebay about this as well, I guess
@OliverSalzburg Weird that you ask such question on webapps. It is definitely to be asked on forum specializing on eBay.
@Boris_yo Ebay is a web app ;D
@OliverSalzburg But what you ask applies to real life practical use.
@Boris_yo So?
Check the other questions in on Web Applications
I don't think mine is off-topic
@OliverSalzburg You need to ask eBay sellers who do what you ask about.
20:44
And I did just email Ebay about it. Hopefully I get an answer from them
@Boris_yo They might be on Web Applications
I ask all my questions on SE sites first
@OliverSalzburg Did you ask them to answer your question in Web Applications so you get upvote and they get reputation?
@Boris_yo No, but that would have been a great idea ;)
@Boris_yo I asked a question then sent a mail to the mailing list about some topic...
@Braiam WHat kind of mailing list you have?
@Boris_yo Good call. Done
20:58
@OliverSalzburg Which number you called?
I am kidding :D
@OliverSalzburg lol WTF?
Banned from 1st visit?
That came up after I sent the question
20:58
Is it by IP ban for no reason?
Now I can't even view the forum listing
@OliverSalzburg Does your IP appear in SPAM databases?
@OliverSalzburg ban for asking a question....? *embrace SE*
Reminds me how mine was banned to but in forums...
@Boris_yo I seriously doubt it
20:59
@OliverSalzburg maybe is CIRD ban
I think it's a regional thing
I'm not gonna write this whole thing up again though
Just gonna wait for the official Ebay reply
...or someone on Web Applications
@OliverSalzburg Don't tell me you don't copy+C before you submit posts...
@OliverSalzburg just press the "back" button ;)
@OliverSalzburg Try these 2?

1. http://community.ebay.com/t5/Answer-Center/ct-p/11000000003
2. http://community.ebay.com/t5/Discussion-Boards/ct-p/12001
@Boris_yo I think I do that before submitting ANY web form!
paranoia?
21:01
@Braiam Not always works...
@Braiam I did, I get the same message I showed above
@Boris_yo They both tell me I'm banned
@Fitzroy Paranoia for fear of form submission failure or whatever... Firefox has Lazarus plugin that automatically saves entered data.
I'm gonna stop visiting your links now before I get banned from the whole internets
@OliverSalzburg Ahahah! Maybe contact message board administrator?
Doesn't say I'm banned
But, as I said, I'll just wait for Ebay to reply now
Forums suck anyways. That's why we're here in the first place ;P
21:04
supposedly lithium.com should be some kind of SE for companies tho
@Boris_yo Makes me laugh when you visit a company thats converted all their systems to web front ends and the staff develop serious Ctrl + C paranoia!!
@OliverSalzburg Forums have higher potential for answered questions. They are best for help vampires.
@Boris_yo Yeah, but not necessarily helpful answers
@OliverSalzburg At least they fill your help vampire satisfaction meter...
I don't have that ;P
21:09
@OliverSalzburg You think Einstens Son has?
@Boris_yo No, his one broke ages ago
@OliverSalzburg Which makes him help zombie?
@Boris_yo He's beyond help
@OliverSalzburg most people get banned on their first post to the Youtube forums, so I'm not surprised if another forum (eBay) is equally bad
all you have to do is say anything that could mildly be interpreted as possibly offensive to anyone in the entire world or make anyone do anything besides smile profusely or laugh, and you're banned
heaven forbid you say something like "crap" or "darn" -- insta ban
@allquixotic There are Youtube forums? O___O
21:20
TotalBiscuit, whose entire professional career and income is built around Youtube, is banned from the youtube forums
@OliverSalzburg lol
careful; you might get banned for making a search containing censored thoughts
without even posting
@allquixotic Oh, one of those. Whenever I posted to anything googleproducts.blah it was fruitless
It takes like 30 minutes to get 20 "Me too!!!" replies and then it dies
And then 1 year later you get a reply from a Google employee who is like "This is an old topic, it's probably fixed now. CLOSED!"
@OliverSalzburg Hah
@allquixotic NSA: Soon...
21:48
@Boris_yo you know what is the scary about that statement... is that it's true D:
@Braiam 0.o Yes, I know. Scary times ahead.
Pushing a post from 99 votes to 100 is nice :D
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg what, did you actually expect Google to care about its customers/users?
And, yes, I use "customers" in the sense that you were actually paying...
@Bob I guess they do, just not about one single person. Unless it affects thousands, it's not a problem at their scale
Obviously I should have special status though ;P
Bob
Bob
22:04
@OliverSalzburg Even things that do affect thousands are routinely ignored.
Much like SE, actually.
Heh. Yeah, I guess so :D
Bob
Bob
Your meta bug report/feature request has 100 upvotes? Eh, not important enough.
Hm? 500 now? Nah, still not enough to warrant a response, let alone a positive response.
that's too sad :(
@OliverSalzburg You need to be Anti-Google blogger and lead thousands with you. That is the influence Google cares about.
@Boris_yo Heh, I guess you're right
You still have to be popular though
22:20
Now this seems useful
E27 socket to B22 socket for less than one quid
Bob
Bob
@Hennes chance of burning? rather high :P
I still got 10 daylight lamps. 25 Watt each.
Peers at amazon.
Why would anyone buy a pair of those?
@Hennes :D to go from E27 to E27, obviously!
I think that is a double ROT13 encoded message
22:48
These chinese convert everything. Lamps, controllers, cows to horses, horses to cows, milk to water and water to milk etc.
4
I just ordered two of those from Germany since the shipping costs from either UK or Hongkong were more than the article.
@Hennes Hong Kong supposed to ship for free...
