@Boris_yo traveling on the web only. still trying to get this computer straight. to many dumass answers on the web and to many repetitius web pages with Fraud titles. like "how to remove" with instuctions on how to disable. And "how to fix" with answers like "cant be done" the hell it cant :-) i have done it before.
The dilemma: I have a 10GB archive and a 20GB harddrive. When I go to unzip / unarchive the file the harddrive fills up and the process fails.
Question: On ubuntu server 12.04 / linux is there a way that I can unarchive a file while reducing the size of the archive?
That's only a guarantee if you have a fixed amount of data, and if I had a fixed amount of data, this wouldn't be a problem! The problem is there is always more data to be had.
I'm assuming that if you're fretting about only having 10/20GB of disk space free, then an external harddrive has already been thought about and skipped over :P

@Boris_yo Google got rid of some of that, spam pages. But still the first 2 pages of a search for say a Driver item, comes up with pages that look like they were made with a computer copy pasting. Which might be usefull if the information pasted was not already written in the driver :-)
@Boris_yo What ever happened to page "ratings" although I never rated a page, it seemed like downvoting would come in really handy. The "top Google Pages" that are total CRAP will stay top, because even if the info is useless or even bad, some idiot (that would be me) keeps clicking on them, hoping the info is there.
Maybe google should add a Fuming sensor to their redirection. If the person who clicked on the link swears more than 5 times, the fuming sencor goes off, and the web page drops to the bottom of the list :-)
@Psycogeek Fuming When something has annoyed you so much that you begin complaining, and your voice goes high-pitched and squeaky. It may involve loud sounds of irritation being produced as a result of this 'fuming' state.

That using these methods to "attempt" to make more money, is going to backfire MOST on the advertisers themselves. No more free meals, everything will have accountability. And no reason to "over advertise, to shell out money continually, until you are as recognized as a klenex
@Boris_yo Backfire, because no product would have to continue Pouring money to them.
They would Fact know their exposure. 15 years ago that would be totally unheard of. Because they had little facts about how many eyes they had, crappy products that nobody wanted still had 20 million dollars in adds.
Now a crappy product realizing they had 20,000 people seeing it, and nobody wanting it, will not waste money on advertising scams.
They wouldn't be the only people shooting themselves in the foot. Just how much money will users of Bad Software have, if the User spend 1/2 their life fixing and working around bugs? If it takes time to muddle through a load of crap, the users (buyers) are neither making lots of money, nor are they buying lots more software. Instead they are dealing with problems.
@Boris_yo it is most certainly not free, you pay a hell of a lot of money to get it, they just tell you that that is the price for the OS, not the browser. Same difference, classic marketing trick: "Only 400$ for this great toilet seat and we give you X,Y,Z for free". That's not free, its included in the price is all.
I just saw a chart of vulnerabilities , shows by MS on one of their updates. It was no surprise to me that out of 6 vulnerabilities, only 1 Applied back to IE6 :-) so much for the IE6 haters :-) add a feature , add a bug, add a hole.
@terdon Ahh what has improved webpages Since IE6 ? they freaking pictures text and video. anything else has been new improved ways to bring us Ads . Nothing that has been done to any web page to "improve it" . Look at em. bloody mess now.

@Boris_yo avoid because I am not a professional web page developer and when I write pages they're either personal or for scientists so I don't have customers bugging me for flash :)
It just makes pages load more slowly and not work on all systems etc etc. Anything that requires me to install a plugin in order to see it is not good practice IMHO.

@DarthAndroid Course OSrippers are to be laughed at. Because removing a few items does nothing to improve the system speed. Its the removing neer 200 of them :-) that's what does it.
Removing near 200 of them doesn't really improve the speed though. Time saved vs. (time spent removing + time spent confused when something doesn't work + time spent re-adding removed components) doesn't pay out.
Esp. when I can just throw a small 30-60GB SSD cache in the system and watch it fly.
@DarthAndroid Yup, just like overclocking , by the time I get the overclock going 130% , I have wasted about 3 times the amount of time I would save by doing it. But its Bloody fast then :-)
@Psycogeek What are you talking about? This is an Intel world these days. Install stock air cooler that comes with the processor, set overclock to 130%, load windows.
In terms of disk improvement, you can't really get better than a platter RAID with a block-level SSD Cache. RAM disks will negatively affect your overall performance.
@DarthAndroid Windows Caches Suck big donky balls. they way slow, to much overhead, releace poorly. People don't use IE , why would they use windows slow caches?
@JourneymanGeek Depends on the implementation. If you have the card validating the answers, then even bitcoin doesn't need a lot of pcie bandwidth
@Psycogeek It's a packet-based protocol. 1x, 8x, 16x all operate at the same speed (frequency) and have similar latency. The difference is the number of links.
I can tell a GPU to render a frame, manipulate a 3D object, deallocate memory, draw a triangle all at the same speed on all 3
It's only when I have to tell the GPU "hey, stick all this data in your texture buffer" that the link bandwidth comes into play, and a 16x will get it done faster

I am setting up a production system (will be deployed to multiple devices), based on Lubuntu. The system starts X, logs in a user automatically, and runs a full screen GUI application. That's all it really does. I'm using openbox as the window manager - in production I don't really need a window ...
@Psycogeek My point is that there's very little difference between 8x and 16x, which means that almost 50% of a 16x PCIe slot is idle. Clocking up the PCIe bus will not be majorly helpful for gaming, and is not worth the time investment.
My time is much better spent figuring out stuff like this: in a 5-day period, my system has 5TB of disk reads, 97.5% of which is only 32.7GB of unique data.
@DarthAndroid Have you done it? Clocking the whole Bus, instead of just parts of it, clocks more of the computer. I have tested this many times. Plus that on-die cache on the haswell is a lot more important than they are saying. (on the web) , lots of bad information on the web
I`m looking at damn WinXP now. The Atheros Ethernet shows up and activated on Device Manager. Nothing on Network Connections on Control Panel, empty. ipconfig -all is empty (i cant type a slash here but I do on the damn xp)

@DarthAndroid The SSD was a soul saver when it came to setup. it usually takes me many many trips around before I get the boot up to speed. all then stupid boots for updates, and driver installs.
@DarthAndroid I measure it to when my programs are running.
Oh god. That POS XP is so damn slow it takes more than 5min to boot. (In ubuntu is less than 1min.) Then it won't read my flashdrive with the newer drivers. I'm seriously considering taking it home, because the only true solution would be installing Linux (and driving the user crazy).
