7:00 PM
@Psycogeek Heh
@Psycogeek How are you? Been traveling?

@OliverSalzburg When you're in, I got a semi-weird question for you, just because you're European

@CanadianLuke Shoot

In Europe, if you buy electronics, they come with a mandatory 2 year warranty, and cell phones are all unlocked, correct?

@CanadianLuke Sounds reasonable. I know that's what it's like in Germany
Could very well be EU law

Since we have really f*cked up rules here in North America, if I gave you money through PayPal or something, could I trust you to ship it here?

7:09 PM
Of course. Wouldn't be the first time

Great! Could you get me a price on an iPhone of some sort? It's not for me, it's for my dad who's convinced Apple is the way to go...

@CanadianLuke It's probably pretty expensive ;)

I understand. That's why he's paying for it
Over here, the base model would be over $650, before tax, and it'd be locked anyways
And only a 1 year warranty

The base model is 699€ here

Ahhh. Never mind then... Ouch

7:11 PM
ehm, Cell phones are not unlocked by definition in Europe.
Do check before buying.

Dell makes phones? o.o

Dypo ;-)
Or as I sometimes say in Dutch "Vaudje, bedankt!"

Hmmm. I may just tell him to suck it up and order an unlocked phone from Google, assuming they still do that

@Boris_yo traveling on the web only. still trying to get this computer straight. to many dumass answers on the web and to many repetitius web pages with Fraud titles. like "how to remove" with instuctions on how to disable. And "how to fix" with answers like "cant be done" the hell it cant :-) i have done it before.

The 699 was including tax btw

7:15 PM
Who has a 20GB HDD these days?
2
Q: Unarchive file while reducing size of archive?

Ethan WillisThe dilemma: I have a 10GB archive and a 20GB harddrive. When I go to unzip / unarchive the file the harddrive fills up and the process fails. Question: On ubuntu server 12.04 / linux is there a way that I can unarchive a file while reducing the size of the archive?

So, $810 + shipping + not knowing if it'll actually work with the bands in the US, I guess :P

Not even SSD's are that small anymore.

@Hennes Thats.... wat.

Bands are easily checked. Only 4 main ones in use.

In 2004 i bought a 40GB drive and that was the smallest they had

7:16 PM
@Hennes 20GB HDD for simplicity when he really has 20GB of free space?

And wikipedia has a nice article on mobile bands (or had when I last checked it, you never know)
If (s)he has 10GB free space then the solution is to move or compress ome of the other data

What if the problem is that they already did that, and now they need to get at some of the data that was moved/compressed?

No. Then you had enough space for the archive and the uncompressed data.

The bands should be fine, Telus is very universal now
But for that cost, I don't think he'll go for it
I'll offer, but...

@Hennes There's no guarantee of that.

7:23 PM
On the tar ?

That's only a guarantee if you have a fixed amount of data, and if I had a fixed amount of data, this wouldn't be a problem! The problem is there is always more data to be had.

Ah, yes. But sjees. 20GB. Just dump it somewhere on the net.
Then either unpack it there, or netcat it back to the place where you had the original archive
This lawmost feel like I am back at an IBM PC with DOS and 256KB RAM.

> somewhere on the net.
I wish it was easy to sling 20GB to somewhere on the net.
Most people in the US will take 5-20 days to do that.

Well, if it is at home, get an external HDD. If it is on a VPS then you probably have bandwidth

@DarthAndroid yup

7:27 PM
I'm assuming that if you're fretting about only having 10/20GB of disk space free, then an external harddrive has already been thought about and skipped over :P

for some cost (and waiting) you can send a HDD or flash drive to Amazon and they'll put it up on their servers, but....

Aye, unless it is on a VPS

@DarthAndroid you could put it on a flash card and mail it to them in the time it takes to upload it :-) Snail Mail Net.

Take it to school and upload at GBit speed ?

@Psycogeek In Africa, it's faster to do just that with a carrier pigeon.

7:28 PM
Assuming the PCs are limited to GB and that you can not upload parts from multiple PCs at the same time
RFC 1149!
Possibly replace school with work, uni, whatever

@Hennes I dunno, it's not my problem, I'm just exploring hypotheticals.
I (personally) just throw 4TB harddrives at the problem until it goes away or is knocked unconscious.

@DarthAndroid In Australia bob showed a video that was Drone deliverer. Autonomous computerised drones with gps and cameras. And skynet comes forth :-)

@Psycogeek How about dynamically generated fake pages where you only see exact title you searched for and advertisements? Despice those eh?

Web 2.0 must die. Long live web 3.0 ;-)

@Boris_yo Google got rid of some of that, spam pages. But still the first 2 pages of a search for say a Driver item, comes up with pages that look like they were made with a computer copy pasting. Which might be usefull if the information pasted was not already written in the driver :-)

7:37 PM
@Hennes Tired of it?

@Boris_yo What ever happened to page "ratings" although I never rated a page, it seemed like downvoting would come in really handy. The "top Google Pages" that are total CRAP will stay top, because even if the info is useless or even bad, some idiot (that would be me) keeps clicking on them, hoping the info is there.
Maybe google should add a Fuming sensor to their redirection. If the person who clicked on the link swears more than 5 times, the fuming sencor goes off, and the web page drops to the bottom of the list :-)

7:57 PM

So true

Is that Frankenstein?

Frankenstein?
Bukowski

@Psycogeek For sensing fumes?

8:01 PM
!!urban fuming

@Psycogeek Fuming When something has annoyed you so much that you begin complaining, and your voice goes high-pitched and squeaky. It may involve loud sounds of irritation being produced as a result of this 'fuming' state.

Hmm, then why is nitric acid so angry ?

@Boris_yo That Charles Barkley, what a guy eh..

@JimmyHoffa I don't know him.
@Psycogeek Fake votes all the way!
Where online advertising is headed: techcrunch.com/2013/09/28/…

@Hennes surprisingly parallelizable...

8:09 PM
@JimmyHoffa FP parallelizable? :o
OpenMP --> OpenFP :o
not sure how OpenMP would work in Haskell

@Boris_yo Wonder if any of them people who find it necessary to Track everything, ever realized that the most well known brands of today, had no idea who how or why anyone saw their adds, they just Paid and Paid and Paid to have the adds exist. Like say Coca-Cola
That using these methods to "attempt" to make more money, is going to backfire MOST on the advertisers themselves. No more free meals, everything will have accountability. And no reason to "over advertise, to shell out money continually, until you are as recognized as a klenex

@allquixotic No, RFC 1149

@Psycogeek That's brand awareness which costs huge but since tracking is available, it does it better and cheaper.
@Psycogeek What you mean backfire? Because of additional management of human resources?

@Boris_yo Backfire, because no product would have to continue Pouring money to them.
They would Fact know their exposure. 15 years ago that would be totally unheard of. Because they had little facts about how many eyes they had, crappy products that nobody wanted still had 20 million dollars in adds.
Now a crappy product realizing they had 20,000 people seeing it, and nobody wanting it, will not waste money on advertising scams.

@Psycogeek It's like early they knew they were shooting blind but made money.

8:21 PM
They wouldn't be the only people shooting themselves in the foot. Just how much money will users of Bad Software have, if the User spend 1/2 their life fixing and working around bugs? If it takes time to muddle through a load of crap, the users (buyers) are neither making lots of money, nor are they buying lots more software. Instead they are dealing with problems.

But today people are enlightened and evolved so this thing of the past will hardly work.

@Psycogeek are you kidding? How do you explain IE then? Crappy software, millions of users.

@terdon It's free, it's bundled.

@terdon I would use windows as an example of something that is wasting a whole lot of peoples time?
Look how many of them are smart enough to stay with XP :-)

I was going to use Windows as my example but since so many of you guys use it, I thought I'd go for something more neutral :)
XP was the first half-way decent OS they built since 3.11. Still crap, just slightly better crap.

8:25 PM
Xp is still the number 2 operating system in use today.

Why not?
@Boris_yo it is most certainly not free, you pay a hell of a lot of money to get it, they just tell you that that is the price for the OS, not the browser. Same difference, classic marketing trick: "Only 400$ for this great toilet seat and we give you X,Y,Z for free". That's not free, its included in the price is all.

I just saw a chart of vulnerabilities , shows by MS on one of their updates. It was no surprise to me that out of 6 vulnerabilities, only 1 Applied back to IE6 :-) so much for the IE6 haters :-) add a feature , add a bug, add a hole.

@Psycogeek unfair, opera and firefox were both standard compliant back then and did not have the holes.

Stuff sure aint getting "better"

And if you don't hate IE6, you've necer had to write a webpage that uses CSS and works for it
At least the new IEs seem to be standards compliant-ish

8:29 PM
@terdon Oh I forgot , no other browsers (that worked) had any of the holes , or the features :-)

What features? of IE6?? That firefox did not have?
hmm. That was not very clear. I meant: what features of IE6 did firefox not have?

Isolation.

?

@terdon Ahh what has improved webpages Since IE6 ? they freaking pictures text and video. anything else has been new improved ways to bring us Ads . Nothing that has been done to any web page to "improve it" . Look at em. bloody mess now.

One page crashes in IE, eh, reopen it. One page crashes in FF (at the time), there went your whole browser.

8:31 PM
@Psycogeek absolutely true, no argument there. Well, CSS has improved and HTML5 has some cool stuff but by and large agreed.
@DarthAndroid really? 6 had that? OK, that's cool. I only ever knew it from a web author's perspective and boy did it suck
Also, back in the day firefox simply did not crash that often (at least not on *nix) so that was not an issue for me.

Well, I'm being a bit cynical there. IE6 didn't have tabs...

@terdon Just seems that sometimes instead of webmasters fighting with new crap, that will break in 1/2 the things out there, be they old or new.. they might have instead gone with pure simplicity to do the same task.

YES

@terdon With 70-100 tabs, FF crashed a lot.

@DarthAndroid yeah but because of memory issues not because of the webpages in question
@Psycogeek I know, I still have not learned flash for example and never will if I can avoid it. Until very recently all my pages worked fine on text based browsers :)

8:35 PM
@terdon True, but "I only ever knew it from a [user's] perspective and boy did it suck"
And then Chrome came out and all was right with the world.

And then google went over to the dark side and makes me log in for every thing :(

@DarthAndroid chrome was too simple :-) the first time I tried it, I wanted all my buttons back for controlling everything

@DarthAndroid With protective mode enabled.
@terdon Avoid because HTML5 will push out flash eventually?

@terdon But they gonna fix that, with the ultimate in tracking and Big payments to google and MS, with the Open-Id. after all ID should be Open , and my programs on my computer should be Live to the web. Cause that all makes sense . . . about as much sense as the rest of the "progress" made.

@Boris_yo avoid because I am not a professional web page developer and when I write pages they're either personal or for scientists so I don't have customers bugging me for flash :)
It just makes pages load more slowly and not work on all systems etc etc. Anything that requires me to install a plugin in order to see it is not good practice IMHO.
@Psycogeek yup. And we will all live in happy facebook land

8:41 PM
@terdon Hang-on I am going to go tweet about that :-)
Back. Luckily tweets are meaningless short notes best suited for SMS
good thing I was already Logged on EVERYWHERE :-) cause if your going to have a security problem, you want it to be a BIG one .

heh, yeah, why go half way?

don't take the key off your ring and hand it to that greasy car mechanic when you can hand him the keys to your house, your other car, your girlfriends house, your storage shed, the safety deposit box, and the safe you keep your gun in.
That way, when he steals your car, he can clean out your house , rape your girlfriend, rob your bank, before he shoots you with your own gun.
It is sure to save a lot of time and trouble.

Well, yes and no to some degree.
Sure, I can keep separate keys for everything
(Which, thanks to bump-keys, they don't really do much of anything )

Sorry to go off topic here, but wow, just wow!

or I can buy a nice retinal scanner and triple lock for my house, and say that only people that can enter my house are allowed to use my car or open my safe or withdraw money from my bank account

8:54 PM
@terdon also, it needs a "plugin" to work...

@DarthAndroid You need a digital lock, 140,000,000 combinations. Or with a torques driver , just take off the plate and put 2 wires together

@terdon totally OVERKILL

@terdon The guy is asking if he can get rid of a bacterial infection by pouring boiling water down his throat.I guess I could just answer "yes". It will probably also kill the bacteria but you'll be dead or in hospital too.
@DarthAndroid :) nice comment.

@terdon Hmm, will cutting off my hand get rid of this wart ?

@terdon not counting that he will get burn and get exposed to more bacteria

8:58 PM
Sometimes the internet just makes me depressed. I mean where do all these idiot hide during the day?

@Psycogeek you will still feel the pain, is psicological

@terdon I am right here, What ?
and its still day, but I am hiding

Ah, so that's what a help vampire is!

@terdon he's a troll....
look last comment

@terdon I need help, I want to suck all the answers to my questions out of knowledgeable peoples brains

9:02 PM
try true blood

lol, everyone hates the Main female character...
she just look so dunce... more than X-men

What is a FDPhost , not what is it technically, but what the hell do I need it for?
What is a IKEEXT , and does it make Swedish furniture?
If I turn off QWave , will Floating point digital audio aliasing stop working in windows?

@terdon I'm glad that question was deleted.
@Psycogeek FDPHost: technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc727733(v=ws.10).aspx Looks like you want to keep that one.
IKEEXT is required for IPSec vpn

@DarthAndroid yeah we're pretty strict about medical advice on bio.se. It can be very dangerous.

@DarthAndroid There are many "support for" an application or hardware things, but they are rearely used. even ones that have clung to the system for years.
@DarthAndroid Cool, don't need notvirtual nothing, gonna do it for real this time
zombie drivers. problem is there is about 150 things I will turn off. I am "working the fence" for The Walking Dead operating system.
My friends say I should just leave them corralled in my memory and storage, cant milk a dead cow you know.

9:21 PM
@terdon I don't have any urge to go post on your meta. I went and visited your meta and someone was getting down-voted, and argued with by Moderators through comments, for suggesting that people know about the topic before they they answer a question. The very last thing I need is a group where people are googling on my behalf. — dcaswell 12 mins ago
grrrr
I was just trying to get the guy to post somewhere were we could discuss this whole, rapidly spiraling out of control issue. That's what I get for trying to engage.

@terdon Utterly ridiculous that anyone should know about the subject that they are answering , they should use ass-foo like I do, and pull it out of their butt.

or ass-bar maybe and push it in.
:)

@Psycogeek I would just leave them. if you're really not using them, then they're just taking up a few MB of space on your pagefile at worst.

then provide the Stock answer I saw about 1800 times on Google already, and entirely missed the point. The point being that didn't even workaround the problem let alone solve it.

@Psycogeek Well, as I tried to point out, the likelyhood of me answering question is inversely proportional to how much I know about it
The less that I know about something, the more likely that I'll find it interesting, research it, toy with it, and figure out the answer.

9:28 PM
@DarthAndroid I keel them all. (course that was easy back in XP) Last of the crasy mofo OS rippers is here graphixanstuff.com/Forum/index.php?showtopic=15194 They are a dying breed, Rollover sheep is the new thing.

OS rippers?

A: When cleaning up tags, please use one post per tag so that real community input can be given

Journeyman GeekIts not a problem - we've been doing it this way through many cycles of tag clearups, and having a centralised, community moderated and maintained list is a much more efficient way of doing so. Considering the sheer amount of crappy tags we wade through, especially considering we try to avoid f...

I remember a question a while back by a new user who was using some obscure piece of software. I asked him to explain what the software was and how I could get my hand on it and was told "Yo dude, if you don't know the answer just shut up".

why do i always miss these arguments? D:

@tapped-out It's been missed?

9:30 PM
@tapped-out yeah, its been hectic today

would've contributed my $0.02
but Geek, terdon et al. covered it pretty well

I'd contribute $20 if I could cash it into pennies and throw it at people.

:)

@DarthAndroid OS ripper, person who realizes that they are only using 10% of the files, and 3% of the services and drivers on their system. So they dump the other 90%

two days with closing privileges, two days of hitting the cap on the close queue. :P

9:36 PM
@DarthAndroid Course OSrippers are to be laughed at. Because removing a few items does nothing to improve the system speed. Its the removing neer 200 of them :-) that's what does it.

Removing near 200 of them doesn't really improve the speed though. Time saved vs. (time spent removing + time spent confused when something doesn't work + time spent re-adding removed components) doesn't pay out.
Esp. when I can just throw a small 30-60GB SSD cache in the system and watch it fly.

@DarthAndroid Yup, just like overclocking , by the time I get the overclock going 130% , I have wasted about 3 times the amount of time I would save by doing it. But its Bloody fast then :-)

Well, removing things can speed up things when you do a few hundred installations.
E.g. a corporate windows XP where you first image the PC, then uninstall the games from a hundred of them

@Psycogeek What are you talking about? This is an Intel world these days. Install stock air cooler that comes with the processor, set overclock to 130%, load windows.
;)

@DarthAndroid got the SSd straight up, plus RAID0 X4 x2 Plus the ram disk, that doesn junctions now.

9:44 PM
Nooooo RAMDisk bad.

@DarthAndroid apparently not on a haswell

It's not a "on haswell" thing. You're wasting precious RAM that could be used for disk cache

@DarthAndroid Ramdisk good. monko like ramdisk. Actually I liked it better when it disappeared.

In terms of disk improvement, you can't really get better than a platter RAID with a block-level SSD Cache. RAM disks will negatively affect your overall performance.

@DarthAndroid Windows Caches Suck big donky balls. they way slow, to much overhead, releace poorly. People don't use IE , why would they use windows slow caches?

9:47 PM
(unless you're nuts and have several thousand $$$ to get massive PCI-e terabyte SSD drives )
Slow? By what benchmark?
It's RAM. It can't be slower than SSD or Platter.

@DarthAndroid Benchmarks Bah, speak not of what you have not tried.

user image

@terdon

:)
There was a "sorry JG" at the end of that comment.

@Psycogeek A RAMdisk makes specific applications feel fast,, yes.
I've gone down that road.

@DarthAndroid I make THE fastest windows system in the whole world. I would put it up against a Liquid nitrogen cooled one, and win.

9:49 PM
I'd much, much rather have my entire system feel fast.

@JourneymanGeek Sorry, I was trying to get the guy to post a Q on meta but he didn't want to.

@terdon: no worries.

@Psycogeek Huh, based on what? Using one or two applications that you can copy to a RAMdisk?

@terdon that Lance guy?

@DarthAndroid So how far up did you crank your Bclk?

9:51 PM
@allquixotic yeah, him and dcaswell whose comment I quoted above

None. I just bumped the multiplier to 44.
It's not worth the time to push every last ounce of speed out of it
I've walked that road before

@DarthAndroid but I thought you wanted the whole computer to be faster? bumping the bclk set the pci bus and chipset all up too?

pci buss and chipset aren't bottlenecks though.
bottleneck for me is by far disk access

@DarthAndroid Video card, and raid card on the PCI buss

WoW, TF2, L4D2, etc.
video card isn't the bottleneck
video card is on a 16x PCE 2.0 PEG link to the northbridge

9:53 PM
@DarthAndroid It is when your pushing crisis frames

most games won't even max out a 8x pci-e link
No, not really.

@DarthAndroid: considering until recently, 6-7 year old cards were the baseline people were building games for, yeah.

the only time games get close to maxing out the pci-e bandwidth is when they're loading textures

@DarthAndroid Ahhh, I see what your saying. right. only time is when that stupid loading screen is taking all day.

we're talking bandwidth here, not speed
1x is just as fast as 16x
unless you're doing data-intensive gpgpu stuff (bitcoin, f@h, etc), since those are all bandwidth-intensive

9:55 PM
@DarthAndroid On what benchmark now do you figure this? Again have you tested any of this stuff?

@DarthAndroid where speed = latency?

1X is most certannly not as fast as 16X even on a 3.0 , but 8x certannly is only a smidgeon slower than 16

@DarthAndroid: though, don't bitcoiners use 1.0 slots for video cards?

@tapped-out Yes.
@JourneymanGeek Depends on the implementation. If you have the card validating the answers, then even bitcoin doesn't need a lot of pcie bandwidth
@Psycogeek It's a packet-based protocol. 1x, 8x, 16x all operate at the same speed (frequency) and have similar latency. The difference is the number of links.
I can tell a GPU to render a frame, manipulate a 3D object, deallocate memory, draw a triangle all at the same speed on all 3
It's only when I have to tell the GPU "hey, stick all this data in your texture buffer" that the link bandwidth comes into play, and a 16x will get it done faster
My bottle neck is by far my disk access times.

10:01 PM
@DarthAndroid Well I don't know what your trying to represent. techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/HD_5870_PCI-Express_Scaling/3.html there are graphs like this all over the place. But I got my information from seeing my game frame rate get very bad, when I was running with just 1X .

Q: Looking for extremely lightweight, minimal X display manager

Jason CI am setting up a production system (will be deployed to multiple devices), based on Lubuntu. The system starts X, logs in a user automatically, and runs a full screen GUI application. That's all it really does. I'm using openbox as the window manager - in production I don't really need a window ...

software rec?

@tapped-out yes

@Psycogeek My point is that there's very little difference between 8x and 16x, which means that almost 50% of a 16x PCIe slot is idle. Clocking up the PCIe bus will not be majorly helpful for gaming, and is not worth the time investment.

@DarthAndroid Yup when it comes to loading textures. that is why they are doing raid0 SSD. which still couldn't touch that bandwith

10:04 PM
That kind of software-rec is on topic on Unix & Linux though

Hello fellow geek comrades

My time is much better spent figuring out stuff like this: in a 5-day period, my system has 5TB of disk reads, 97.5% of which is only 32.7GB of unique data.

Almost two years since last tech support. 5min into windows and I`m AAAAGHHH
Reporting live from duty site, captain

@terdon huh, what's the U&L software-rec policy?

10:06 PM
Adding a 32-GB block-level SSD cache means that 97% of my disk accesses will come from the SSD

@DarthAndroid Have you done it? Clocking the whole Bus, instead of just parts of it, clocks more of the computer. I have tested this many times. Plus that on-die cache on the haswell is a lot more important than they are saying. (on the web) , lots of bad information on the web

I've clocked up the whole bus before. It's too tedious and time-consuming to get any meaningful improvement out of it.

@tapped-out we don't mind them.

It's just flat out not worth my time.

@DarthAndroid Well for me it is more important, they don't put a tweaker on a raid card.

10:07 PM
how do i use AND or OR searches on the search page?

tweaker on a raid card?

YES CLIPPY TELL ME HOW

@DarthAndroid Clock the bus clock whats on it. You would have to see.
It not just about the bandwith

Speed on the bus isn't my problem, though. That's not what I'm waiting around for my system to do.

@ThatHelpVampireGuy i'm assuming you mean on SU/SE... search automagically ANDs everything, to OR something you'd just type "or" between two operands

10:11 PM
I`m looking at damn WinXP now. The Atheros Ethernet shows up and activated on Device Manager. Nothing on Network Connections on Control Panel, empty. ipconfig -all is empty (i cant type a slash here but I do on the damn xp)
its driving me craaaaazy
It has the drivers, it is not disabled, it works on Ubuntu live cd

Anyways,, I have to head out for the evening, take care :)

@DarthAndroid But that's the point , I will not be able to make, the CPU isn't king :-) the queen puts the cpu in check. (learned that in chess club)

heh
just triggered a captcha

@Psycogeek I'm not sure what you're talking about there. neither the CPU or the PCIe bus will help me load 2GB of textures off of my disk any faster :)

@JourneymanGeek tone down the awesomeness... it can trigger captcha

10:13 PM
@Braiam: lol

@DarthAndroid I will show you proof, gimme time to recall the data on my machine. like about another month.

@Braiam: actually, one liner answer, and the question belongs on meta

O.o

Like I said The fastest computer in the world. because the web is wrong (about many things)

Now that I am a Help Vampire no one wants to help me :(

10:17 PM
@Psycogeek Sorry, but no overclocking my bus is going to make my disks spin faster. 130MB/s is the max they do.

@ThatHelpVampireGuy really?

@ThatHelpVampireGuy nobody could help you, you know to much, plus you got google.
@DarthAndroid But what about the cache? or 4 of them working as a team?

@Braiam Not really, me just wanteds a shinny starisses

@JourneymanGeek > arn't -> aren't ;)

Psycogeek I already have both. I don't play the game often enough for it to be on the SSD cache.
wasting 27GB of SSD space or RAM isn't worth it.

10:19 PM
where?

> Its because we arn't just answering
the fourth word

@DarthAndroid Another limitation of the terrible overhead of the OS and intel method of SSD cache. Having to set it all out for the different disks.

no, which question? ;p

oh man dog... this answer meta.superuser.com/a/7303/235569

@Psycogeek What do you mean?

10:21 PM
@DarthAndroid I opted out of that method, based on intels own displayed results.

ahh, fixed

I have one shared 64Gb SSD that accelerates all of my disks as a write-back and read cache

@DarthAndroid: nice.

It's not set out or restricted to individual disks.

@DarthAndroid intels own data showed a mere 25% increase in speed, that was using normalized benchmarks.

10:24 PM
Uh, well boot-up times dropped from ~3 minutes to 45-55 seconds, so I'll stick with my numbers thank you :)

@DarthAndroid it still takes you 45 seconds to boot? I can go all the way around, from exit to back into the system in less than 30
Plus I have the raid bios to deal with.

@Psycogeek Yes, because I reboot maybe once every two months, and I have a ton of stuff that I load on startup.
(I define boot up as the time between the system starts initializing, and the disk queue drops below 1 outstanding request on average )

@DarthAndroid The SSD was a soul saver when it came to setup. it usually takes me many many trips around before I get the boot up to speed. all then stupid boots for updates, and driver installs.
@DarthAndroid I measure it to when my programs are running.

@JourneymanGeek how did you managed to remove the rest of the notifications?

10:28 PM
@DarthAndroid I will make you a video. My boot logo doesn't even get to finish, but only when the buss is set faster?

Hey @JourneymanGeek why you don't like closing parenthesesses? meta.superuser.com/a/7303/235569

indeed...

@ThatHelpVampireGuy Because nobody respects LISP anymore...

O.o, I got to manage flags in chat :S
I need 1.3 k rep, can someone upvote all my answers/questions that deserves them, thanks :D
btw, only 200 per day ;)

@Braiam opens a giant can of voting fraud ;P

10:32 PM
> that deserves them
is not a fraud, is selfpromotion :O

pretty sure the system would still catch that xP
i'm curious, how is the close vote review queue sorted?

gimme an hour and I will show you one

Oh god. That POS XP is so damn slow it takes more than 5min to boot. (In ubuntu is less than 1min.) Then it won't read my flashdrive with the newer drivers. I'm seriously considering taking it home, because the only true solution would be installing Linux (and driving the user crazy).

@JimmyHoffa I respect the hell out of it (I have to, I use emacs) I just can't understand it

@terdon That's ok, it understands you.

10:41 PM
I know, that's the scary part. I also think it is smarter than I am and makes better lasagna.
Is there actually a good reason why lisp likes hanging parentheses so much? Or loose single quotes?

Is there a topic that there isn't a xkcd comic about?

@Braiam dancing caterpillars?

there aren't caterpillars that dance, only butterflies and there is a comic about them

@terdon That's not fair, everyone knows Lasagna follows a set of rules which much like computability theory is better expressed by a formal language than human hands

Oh, so you think it's fair that a language is smarter than I am huh? :)

10:52 PM
OTOH, Amateur Radio is going into beta soon! yay!

@tapped-out Good. We don't need another P.SE moment...trust me, that just irked more people than anything and it was a wreck.
It simply can't work, read:

A: why are the best questions the ones which have been closed?

Yannistl;dr We already tried supporting those questions, we even gave them their own site. Sadly, it didn't work out. C'est la vie. 3 years ago, a Stack Exchange site called Not Programming Related came out of Area51, the Stack Exchange staging zone. NPR was supposed to be a site where questions t...

@JourneymanGeek I meant the text below...

@Braiam: no idea. bug? ;p

Q: Add informations to "reopen" - request

ChrisSo I want to add some informations to a question which take care of the "Should I use an antivirus on osx" - question. So I have clicked the reopen-link. But I'm not able to add any information why I want to reopen it. Shouldn't a user be able to specify, why he wants that a question reopens? ...

I've just renamed several files in a folder with Powershell (ForEach-Object -replace). How can I save the new names? I'm thinking "Set-Content", but I'm not sure how to do it correctly
