Q: Proxy Server that runs on headers

Homer SimpsonsExample: Proxy Server retrieves connection from client GET / HTTP/1.1 Host: Website.com User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; LNX x86; rv:21.0) Gecko/20090101 Firefox/20.0 Accept: text/html,application/xhtml+xml,application/xml;q=0.9,*/*;q=0.8 Accept-Language: en-gb,en;q=0.5 Accept-Encoding: gzip, d...

what...?
@tapped-out you know, the sad thing is, I could actually do that
i don't know what it's even asking for
i meant the xkcd
ah
silly me, not hovering over and getting the msg replied to :P
Bob
Bob
01:42
@somequixotic tar xvf somefile.tar ? :P
I often do x and c in the same command when in a rush...
z was gzip and j was bzip2... I think?
though they shouldn't be necessary for extraction
v is verbose, and f is...?
@tapped-out some cryptic letter I put there because it's how the guys told me to do. At least that's what I think it means.
oh, FILE
`-f, --file=ARCHIVE
use archive file or device ARCHIVE`
Bob
Bob
Ya. It tells it to extract from (or compress to) the filename following f
I think.
Otherwise, it presumably just uses stdin and stdout

Homer SimpsonsExample: HTTP Server retrieves connection from client GET / HTTP/1.1 Host: Scc.com User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; LNX x86; rv:21.0) Gecko/20090101 Firefox/20.0 Accept: text/html,application/xhtml+xml,application/xml;q=0.9,*/*;q=0.8 Accept-Language: en-gb,en;q=0.5 Accept-Encoding: gzip, deflat...

how do they make people that inept at expressing their thoughts...
Bob
Bob
@somequixotic from what i can gather, this guy has a fundamental misunderstanding of how HTTP works
> So its like a proxy server which runs on headers
dafuq does that even mean
Bob
Bob
A HTTP proxy that ignores HTTP headers... well... that's not an HTTP proxy now, is it?
But he doesn't mention ignoring, accepting or passing on headers. Just 'running on' headers.
As far as I know, "headers" isn't a power source.
2
Or any hardware, or OS, or interpreter. Or anything else you could 'run on'.
Unless...
@somequixotic My current guess is he wants a proxy server that will perform a DNS lookup (against a specific DNS server) on the specified host and forward the request as a normal proxy server.
Since he mentioned some hack involving the hosts file (causing normal lookups to return a local address).
But... the alternatives you mentioned (Fiddler, etc.) do the same in a much cleaner way...
Any of you guys have experience with sending SMS over a GSM modem? Like a proper setup, not the shit suggestions for email-to-sms that you find on SO :P
I already looked up all kinds of stuff online for a proper setup that might work, so no need to google for me ;P But if anyone can provide some first-hand experience, that'd be great
Bob
Bob
02:18
looks like it might be specific to the modem you are using
@Bob Saw that
Saw that whole site basically ;D
Bob
Bob
I do have a 3g modem lying around. Never used it, though.
Does 3G allow for SMS? I assumed it's a GSM thing
Bob

Which links to winsms.com... looks promising
We were primarily looking at Sierra Wireless Fastrack XTEND FXT009
Oh wait, that's only an image :P
Bob

02:22
Short Message Service (SMS) is a text messaging service component of phone, web, or mobile communication systems, using standardized communications protocols that allow the exchange of short text messages between fixed line or mobile phone devices. SMS is the most widely used data application in the world, with 3.5 billion active users, or 78% of all mobile phone subscribers. The term "SMS" is used for all types of short text messaging and the user activity itself in many parts of the world. SMS is also employed in direct marketing, known as SMS marketing. SMS as used on modern hand...
> SMS was originally designed as part of GSM, but is now available on a wide range of networks, including 3G networks.
@Bob Oh. Awesome
Bob
Bob
IIRC it piggybacks on some update packet with GSM, but does something else with 3G.
Initially, I was hoping for a simple IP-to-SMS hardware thing actually
Like, stick a SIM card in and send it some magic packets and that's it
But all I could find was way too high level
So now I'm interested in dealing with the modem itself
Bob
Bob
> A powerful bi-directional HTTP/XML interface
Knowing that it doesn't have to be GSM is already quite helpful
Bob
Bob
02:25
> A simple URL based message submission mechanism
> Command Line Interface (CLI)
looks like you could set up a small server to handle it, if you wanted
@OliverSalzburg might want to double-check the specs of any modem you get
some are strictly data-only
@Bob From what I understand that's a software that can just use a bunch of possible modems
Bob
Bob
that applies to the plan/SIM too, actually
@OliverSalzburg ya
@Bob That was my concern
Bob
Bob
most modems come with their own software, that can often send SMSes
probably not as scriptable, though
> SMS Gateway will work with any device that supports Mobile Originate & Terminate SMS via a serial connection as per the ETSI 07.05 “Block” or “PDU” mode protocol, as per our Hardware page.
Interesting. So, there is a (somewhat) standard protocol.
I've heard a lot of mention of AT commands. Like you basically have serial, text-based communication with the modem and can control it through said AT commands
Haven't heard of those before today though
Bob
Bob
02:28
o.o
they mention using PuTTY to test :P
Bob
Bob
so, ya, serial communication
As for the mobile originate/terminate, apparently that's part of the GSM SMS specifications
That seems to be a somewhat standardized communication protocol with modems from what I understand
Bob
Bob
not sure how that translates to 3G
This was kinda interesting: gonzalo123.com/2011/03/21/…
He lists a couple of commands at the end
Bob
Bob
02:30
there's a decent amount of technical info on that winsms faq, too
but no low-level communication stuff
and my laptop battery is about to die
I'll be back in 30 mins if that happens
I'll have to read it later
I have no chair right now, cat is blocking it
Bob
Bob
lol
ooh interesting
and there's some AT commands on that page too
@OliverSalzburg wammu.eu/gammu
kannel.org seemed popular as well
There were even some guys putting something together on a RaspPi with it
Biggest problem was finding a fitting modem, at least that's what I felt like
Bob

GSM (GPRS, UMTS) terminals/modems. The best option seem to be Siemens modems (eg. ES75/MC35i/MC55i).
Slightly cheaper, while still good are modems made by Huawei (eg. E160/E220/E1750/...). You can check other user

Gammu Phones Database
at least some of the listed Huawei ones are definitely 3G modems
Actually, they appear to be both...

for the record, I never got Virtu MVP to work particularly well, and furthermore there are two distinct hardware versions so if you're using the older hardware you're pretty much left out in the cold
Bob
Bob
@somequixotic huh. you want to add that to the comments?
I can't use it at all D:
also, they only support the latest (or sometimes the previous) WHQL release of the graphics drivers that were available when they were developing that particular release of the driver package for Virtu
so if a new WHQL driver comes out, you can't upgrade or you lose your Virtu -- and that goes for both the Intel driver and the discrete GPU
Bob
Bob
02:50
ouch...
i think as of now they still only support Catalyst 13.1
last i checked anyway
Bob
Bob
(not that laptop switchable is necessarily better... I'm quite sure my laptop would self destruct if I tried to update CCC)
yeah apparently their tech requires an exact pairing up of versions between the intel and amd/nvidia drivers
which is really stupid when they only appear to do quarterly driver updates at best
their list of games is pathetic, too
Bob
Bob
@somequixotic That's just the "Hyperformance" crap. Not directly related to the GPU virtualisation?
@Bob well, if by "crap", you mean "the thing that makes it not suck"...
Hyperformance IIRC is something like frame syncing
oh and it doesn't support OpenGL. at all. :D

Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek That's exactly what the other question was about.
Though this iGPU thing is interesting.
@Bob: basically its mislabelled ;p
Bob
Bob
Labelled as 'being for Virtu'... perhaps is is part of Virtu?
its basically "let both the integrated graphics and discrete graphics be usable"
nope
Bob
Bob
> For Virtu to work, you must enable the "iGPU Multi-Monitor" setting in the P8Z68's UEFI BIOS, even if you're going to use only one monitor.
03:48
@Bob: that basically enables the integrated GPU with the onboard ;p
since thats what lucid does really
lol
confusing, yes?
expanded a bit
@Bob: Basically, the intel GPU does some things other than video output like transcoding better/faster than intel. Quick Sync will only work if you have a monitor plugged in - even if the monitor isn't getting an output. I wanted to do this to plug in a projector to my desktop tho, so I wanted to use both GPUs seperately

@JourneymanGeek are you sick again? your writing up more of those amasing answers, i just want to make sure your ok :-)
11:00
lol
I'd have you know, I post perfectly good answers when high on flu meds.
Honestly, the manual is totally useless ;p
@JourneymanGeek Are you hooking up a system that will actually run Virtu? The reason i ask is to try and find out more about its uses, or its uselessness. One person writes that they screwed up the first version, and it isnt "faster" anyways, a lot of the original hype of it is gone.
@Psycogeek: virtu is 10-20% slower according to reviews
as I said, I just wanted to use my onboard video out sometimes without needing to remove my nvidia card
My understanding is it is possible to utalise the "GPU" portion, as the second gpu card , sort of. to do the SLI or CF type thing. From what i am getting it is more like "to lasy to move a cable" software in the present implementation :-)
ok, let me explain what virtu does
But how that works with 2Monitors would also be interesting to completly understand.
11:08
it adds a layer over the graphics subsystem, basically in one mode, it renders stuff on the discrete GPU, and sends it over software to the integral GPU
so the latter runs all the time, the former runs when needed
HOWEVER, all the bios setting for enabling it does is turn on the integral GPU if there's a discrete GPU present
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek slowest download ever
Huh... convenient. My brother is having an issue with his Intel integrated graphics and his AMD Radeon on his laptop at the moment.
Certain games won't run and you can't seem to specifically tell it to run on the dedicated GPU.
@JourneymanGeek This work to move this data , is software based, and would require much movement of data over the bus, and how much CPU would be used ?

software based, tho it has some hardware requirements
apparently not much cpu load
