@somequixotic Instead of crying about it on the web, and getting it eventually fixed (6months) we would just take the product back as broken. Today there are thousands of people, having to de-bug for the programmers (almost).
@Psycogeek Actually, most stores I remember that sold software would refuse to take back an opened product
You had to open the product in order to install it and figure out it was broken, and once you did that, the best you could do is sell it to a used pawn shop for a fraction of the price you paid for the retail box "new".
bleh xbmc takes forever to scan my drive -_-
So it's not much better than buying games on Steam (and even then, Steam will occasionally agree to process a refund for its customers)
@somequixotic They began that more after they started patching everything. But there was still the licence :-) which can still be used today. Somewhere in the licence there is always a legaese out. there is a part of the licence which usually states "if you do not agree to the terms and conditions , you Must return it" :-) well there wasnt much they could do about that.
This weekend was Calypso Weekend on Steam and I wanted to get the DLC for Tropico 4. The whole thing was 75% off. But I didn't want to buy every single DLC because that was more expensive than buying the game with all DLC included. But I already own the game. So the Steam policy is, you don't get an extra game and you also don't get it cheaper....
Isn't that kind of messed up?
14:08
@OliverSalzburg not really -- they are offering a sale... if you don't need the whole thing, buy whatever is cheaper, whether that's the DLC you don't have, or the whole pack 75% off, and just enjoy it... it's clearly designed to get more money out of people who don't own Tropico 4 itself by selling them the game AND the DLCs
Like I was buying a pack of 6 oranges but I only want to eat 3 and the shopkeeper is like "Oh, well, sir, in that case you only get 3. But you'll have to pay for 6 nonetheless"
one thing is clear about Steam: it is enormously advantageous -- in terms of your wallet -- to wait 3 to 6 months after a game is released, before buying it, because you can very likely get it between 25 and 75% off depending on how good the game was (if it was really good, it won't be heavily discounted for a long time, but if it was bad or okay, it'll probably be practically free within 6 months)
in fact, if you get yourself on a schedule of only buying 6 month old games, you can afford to buy more games with your gaming budget, which makes you busier and fills out your library with more games to play, so that your free time is occupied, and all that with paying less money for the games
I always buy a couple of Humble Bundles and sell the keys a couple of weeks later on Ebay, then I use that money to buy Steam games on sale
14:10
@OliverSalzburg I did not like the taste of the added items in tropico4. it sounds like they offer a totally different game play, but it was the same old same old. Because i played it (great game) for days and days, when i got to the Extras, I started a game or 2 and did not finish.
Actually I don't. But wouldn't that be kind of a dick move :D
for example, even though Saints Row IV came out today, if you were on a 6 month old schedule, you could buy Dishonored 75% off and enjoy that for a while, then buy Saints Row IV at 50% off in 2014
@Psycogeek Oh :(
...
read my mind ;p
@JourneymanGeek who?
14:11
@somequixotic: about SR4 ;p
wtf... buying Tropico again somehow deleted my existing installation Oo
@OliverSalzburg that's awesome :D free feature :D
@somequixotic Well, I just bought 3 during the summer sale. So that's exactly how I roll ;P
the grocer who sold you 3 oranges for the price of 6 (at 50% off!) went to your home and took all your other oranges and stomped on them brutally
14:12
@somequixotic I guess the game+DLC version replaces the game-DLC version
@somequixotic At least my orange juice is synced to the Steam Cloud :\
@OliverSalzburg it might have behooved you to have backed up the game directory first, that way, when it "replaces" the game with the DLC version, you can just paste in the old files, and tell it to verify the files, and it'll be like, "OH! everything is there! except for this 50 MB DLC"
but you couldn't have known in advance :/
Yeah, I actually thought that would happen
Without my intervention though
@OliverSalzburg (tropico 4) Like the "modern" stuff was just new pictures for the same thing, and the "war" sounding stuff was just going through the same paces for many guns, instead of stable economy and all. Perfect to extend the game WHEN i go back to play it 2-10 years from now.
But it actually got stuck on the "Installing Tropico 4" dialog and I never really checked what happened. Maybe it wasn't stuck at all, but just deleting my files ;P
@Psycogeek I had only gotten it during the summer sale and was reading a couple of Arqade questions on it. I read a couple of time "If you have DLC XYZ you can do..." so I was like, maybe I should have gotten the DLC while it was on sale :P
And then, BAM!, Calypso weekend
!!cowthink Calypsoooooooooooooo

The Super buildings were just nice artwork, and a place to unload a bunch of idiot immagrants, or if your people are breeding like flies :-) it was sort of depressing that the ziggerat couldnt fly , and that the massive office building only served 3 possible minor services.
what kind of game is Tropico 4? is it a 4X strategy game?
@somequixotic it is a building and economy, and farming, and industry type strategy.
@Psycogeek is it like the "Anno" games?
I liked Anno 2070 and Anno 1404
Anno 1404, known as Dawn of Discovery in North America, is a city-building game and economic simulation game, with real-time strategy elements. Released in 2009, it was developed by Related Designs, produced by Blue Byte, and published by Ubisoft. Anno 1404 is the sequel to Anno 1701 and is followed by the futuristic sequel Anno 2070. Though the game centers around a series of fictional events, the overall concept of the storyline is based upon real life aspects of medieval/renaissance history such as The Crusades, advancements in gothic architecture, construction of cathedrals, and hanse...
@somequixotic it is simple and fun, a person can get right into it in seconds. I think anno is more complex, i have not played it yet, but it seemed to have a higher level of strategy, but still a end. Ok so you have built the masterpiece of all islands or worlds, now what.
14:21
@Psycogeek yeah, Anno games get complicated in the later campaign levels, various scenarios, or head to head multiplayer... complicated because of the number of resources you have to manage
Bob
Bob
@somequixotic There is a Compatible with Windows Vista thing, I think
It is all about the struggle to get there, the journey. and in tropico it would even end cold when the struggle was done.
is it possible to have a TXT file which has 3 GB?
Bob
Bob
> Programs that have earned the "Certified for Windows Vista" logo or the "Works with Windows Vista" logo are officially supported on Windows Vista by our independent software vendor (ISV) partners. The "Certified for Windows Vista" logo identifies products that are designed and tested to deliver a superior experience with Windows Vista. The "Works with Windows Vista" logo lets you know which software and devices offer baseline compatibility with Windows Vista.
@EinsteinsGrandson Why not?
14:22
as your empire gets more advanced in Anno, you raise new types of citizens, who have new needs, which require you to go out in the world and acquire new types of resources, which are expensive to acquire and defend
Bob
Bob
A text file is just data, at the end of the day.
and the effect is cumulative
What? Nothing changes at the end of the day.
@Psycogeek I'll watch a video review of it / let's play and see if I want it :)
@Bob meh, isn't that mostly for hardware though? I mean, who except really high-rolling Microsoft-loving software developers (like Diskeeper, EMC/VMware, etc.) would actually go through the trouble to certify their software for an operating system release, unless it is enormously dependent on the OS version itself (usually due to a kernel module)?
Bob
Bob
14:25
@somequixotic I've seen a few with the works with logo floating around.
Spybot was one, I think.
VMware is one of the few pieces of software that I actually use that lives in that type of thinking, where everything they do has to be officially blessed by Microsoft
most of what I use is FOSS, and they don't even care about those Microsoft certification logos
@somequixotic How many strategies i have played with the mental idea that i would build the best self sustaining master piece, then sit back and watch the little people thrive as i rule over them. But After the struggle , i last about 30 minutes max gazing over the masterpiece, then want a big volcano to destroy it all for some action. :-)
@Psycogeek lol... in Black & White you could almost create that volcano yourself, or at least a thunderstorm
it was funny to pick up your citizens and throw them into the water and let them drown, to instill fear and hatred in the other citizens
or pick up rocks and brutally smash houses
or tell your creature to poop in the granary to poison all the food, hahaha, i always got a kick out of that
@somequixotic I struggled over the inteface for B&W for a long time. but it was good too, Then (as usual) i played it to death, and moved on. I Keep things like that installed (for a long time) then never go back, because it is still fresh in the memory. Like watching a movie again.
Bob
Bob
@somequixotic I've heard it described as "Sim city with more storyline/quests"
14:30
@Bob never really played sim city -- Anno series is as close as I come to city building games so far
usually the strategy I play is more combat-focused. 4X games like StarDrive, Sins of a Solar Empire, GalCiv 2, Civilization series
and RTS like Total Annihilation
Wow you can log on to someone else file history (at least that seems to confirm recovery) and screw up there metadata claiming it as you own!
My wife file history repository xml now has my user name all over it
Bob
Bob
...file history?
wut
@Bob perhaps he means volume shadow copy "Previous Versions" of files
@somequixotic IIRC, that was what he was talking about earlier too.
Vista, 7, and Windows Server >= 2008 can be configured to save previous versions of files as they change using the Volume Shadow Copy service
(but Windows 8 client versions don't do that anymore)
14:40
u guys are all mean
Bob
Bob
o.o
file history the new windows 8 backup tool ....
@sabgenton you mean the mean mean or just mean?
Bob
Bob
huh.
because i dont know what you mean.
14:41
lol
Bob
Bob
Eh, I gave up on Windows' backup tools after the disaster that is 7 (maybe Vista)
No I just thought your all joking that you didn't know what file history was
i think it is some crude attempt at version control
(In windows 8)
@jokerdino the mean value of meanness means that mean people mean to be mean a mean amount of the time
Bob
Bob
14:42
@somequixotic I'm pretty sure you quoted that before.
@Bob um, no
Bob
Bob
We really do repeat conversations in here.
@jokerdino it's just like rsync or robocopy
I have never said that before :P
Bob
Bob
I've also said that before several times.
14:43
@somequixotic mean people won't mean to mean only a mean amount of time. i am sure about that.
Bob
Bob
How meta.
It copies files to a repo and only copy's newer files after that
let's talk about pens, headphones and VMware some more though

oh and our Android phones

unless they are foods that don't go good together
Bob
Bob
@jokerdino Of course.
14:45
@somequixotic you can create a shadow with (Get-WmiObject -list win32_shadowcopy).Create("C:\","ClientAccessible") in windows 8
then use vssadmin to look at it mount it with mklink /d etc
Bob
Bob
@somequixotic Huh. Must be something similar, then.
but the removed the nice previous versions front end tool
the 10 food pole: cheese sauce, wasabi, ice cream, tomato sauce, sambar, 7-up, chocolate milkshake, pineapple cake, french toast, and peppermint paddies
at least with file history copies there on a different drive
all mixed together in a blender :-)
14:47
@somequixotic oh yeah~
such bliss
@sabgenton didn't know that, but doesn't surprise me that powershell can do it
annoyingly you can hijack someones file history and the other user gets confused and requires a stop start of the service to hijack it back
anyway we weren't trying to be mean; it's just that you haven't really said anything.... actionable or answerable yet
other than that it looks quite good
as it actually backs up to another drive unlike shadows
lol
@somequixotic the last one, arn't those peppermint patties?
Bob

York Peppermint Pattie is a dark chocolate enrobed peppermint confection produced by The Hershey Company. It was first produced in York, Pennsylvania, by Henry C. Kessler at his York Cone Company in 1940, for sale in the Northeastern United States, Ohio, Indiana, and Florida. In 1972, the York Cone Company was acquired by Peter Paul, which launched the York Peppermint Pattie nationally in 1975. In 1978, Peter Paul merged with Cadbury. York passed to the Hershey Foods Corporation when it acquired the US operations of Cadbury Schweppes in 1988. Recently production of the York Pepperm...

@Bob are you allowed to call any external commands, or do you have to implement the HTTP I/O in bash itself?

@sabgenton Of course. But that's hardly the issue.
the bash irc chat room will get very upset if you don't

@Bob wow.... talk about escaping/overloading/whatever that's called
that's like trying to pass a script to screen as a parameter of su as an argument to bash -x
where each step has to have its own quotes and then you have to quote stuff (with all types of quotes) in the script passed to screen
@Bob human resource management?
and to make it better, you have to include escaped quotes in a sed invocation in the screen :D
toothpicks within toothpicks within/next to eyelashes... that's what it starts looking like

@Boris_yo Which would be worse? Finding out that you are a clone, and there are many of you, or realising that your girlfriend is a clone and there are many of her? (Oblivion the movie)
15:08
@Psycogeek it'd be nice to find out the latter, because then you can invite one of the other clones over for dinner... or two of them, or three, or 100
@somequixotic sure but they are clones, that means they would all be on thier period at the same time :-)
After 5 hours of suffering, Ramhound from Georgia saved me
It was just dragging and dropping the folder with 3500 emails to Outlook .....
and now I can filter the emails any way I want to...
@Gowtham that was pretty old

@jokerdino poor dears must be cold.

@Gowtham good thing I'm an older, unattractive man :P

How can I grep a file, but only show lines that do NOT have a # at the start?
@CanadianLuke grep -E '^[^#].*' ?
When I try to upvote my own question... Is my question downvoted automatically?
Stupid question, I know...
@CanadianLuke yep, i tried that and it works
user@computer ~
$ echo 'foo' >> x

user@computer ~
$ echo '#bar' >> x

user@computer ~
$ echo 'baz' >> x

user@computer ~
$ echo '#fly' >> x

user@computer ~
$ grep -E '^[^#].*' x
foo
baz

user@computer ~
$
just a simple regex...
@somequixotic Thanks! Maybe I should ask that as a question since it doesn't exist on SU yet, give you some free rep?
@EinsteinsGrandson No, not automatically
@CanadianLuke it's too localized imho
15:56
OK, thank you!
I have about 10,000 - 15,000 "rep debt" from all the stuff I answer in chat anyway, I'm used to it
@EinsteinsGrandson it should be :-) I think your question got downvoted for the insane problem you have. This time it seems to be written ok, and does not seem to suffer from a language barrier.
I search for "grep remove line matching string", and get 7 results that have nothing to do with it
meaning if I put in the same amount of effort to answering questions on the mainsite as I do in chat, I'd have 25k rep or so on the main site :P
Yea yea yea...
:P
15:57
@CanadianLuke well you can ask the question and make it more generic if you want
Haha,.... people commit suicide for insane problems....
don't ask it about lines that don't start with #
@EinsteinsGrandson Link/story?
try to abstract it a little bit
15:57
I had a friend who commited suicide because he was in debt of 10.000 USD

that's terrible

Q: Is there a way to import emails in Microsoft format MSG into newly installed Outlook 2007?

Einsteins GrandsonI have 3500 emails from old Outlook in one folder. All the emails are in file format: MSG . They were somehow downloaded / exported from the old laptop when the user was using Outlook and knew that he has to backup those emails. Now, I need to import these emails into newly installed Outlook 200...

his life was just getting started
15:58
and could have saved and payed back those 10.000 USD in 1 or 2 years
lol why is the answer to that question CW?
he was the most handsome guy in high school

Q: Remove lines matching string in grep

Canadian LukeI have some long configuration files to go through, and I would like to see just what is actually active in the .conf file, without any of the # tags. What can I use to output the lines without a # on it? I'm running Debian Wheezy with this command.

What I'm trying to say is that: There is no insane problem
One problem can be insane for somebody but perfectly sane for somebody else and vice versa...
@somequixotic Seems like he thought he'd get downvoted for the short and sweet answer
16:02
@EinsteinsGrandson messing with 3500 emails, insane. I would make a copy, then start tossing as many that were spam, and sales and all.
No spam, no sales!
All the emails were important!
They were already cleaned from spam and unneeded emails...
@EinsteinsGrandson: actually, thats pretty much what I do at school ;p
outlook 2007 isn't it?
There are managers who get 300+ emails each day and maybe 5 to 10 % is spam at most...
including weekends....
so in 3 years that would be around 300.000 emails !!!
And it's still not insane...
Just the world we live in .... in 2013.
@EinsteinsGrandson of which 3 are important enough to keep for a year?
16:08
@CanadianLuke the other answer to the question you just asked, the guy who was sitting right on the unanswered questions list and posted his answer before mine (because he was so damn quick), is technically correct and shorter, but he doesn't offer any explanation as to why... up to you which one to accept :P
@EinsteinsGrandson but what world is it that we would collect what every person said to us, or say texts or even voice messages? NSA :-)
along with the tool I suggested
....
doggamit
I am going to kill whatever's messing up my network connection
@JourneymanGeek oops, ok well i can stop running my torrents through it untill you go to bed :-)
@CanadianLuke actually see my comment and downvote on Rich's answer, mine is better
@Psycogeek: I think my cousin set up a torrent client on my dad's system
lol

Sorry, was on the phone... I'll take a look
I HAVE VOTED! MUAHAHAHA!
@CanadianLuke updated my answer to be even more useful

@Psycogeek Is this question reference to my previous reply out this is a question out of nowhere? P.S I thought oblivion is a game...
@Boris_yo it's a game; it's a movie; it's a gamevie! a mome! (and the game and movie have nothing to do with one another)
@somequixotic: sequel or extended edition?
16:49
@JourneymanGeek I installed uTorrent app on tablet. Saves some time because I prefer to watch on it.
@somequixotic " gamevie! a mome!" Don't speak French to me.
@Boris_yo out of nowhere.
@somequixotic: at the bottom?
thought you'd like that @JourneymanGeek because you're a dog
there's no other string saying dog in the page.
16:52
@JourneymanGeek wrong; there's actually a dog in there somewhere
lo
there isn't ;p
@somequixotic another poor soul searching for god.
my bad. I was looking vertically and horizontally
16:53
@Psycogeek If I had clones, it would be better I think. I would be more productive and could be replaced by clones in case I wanted days off.
I've had teachers, bosses and friends say "I wish I could clone you!" when I helped them
@Boris_yo but you have to feed clothe and shelter them all, Course setting up their computers would be easier
@somequixotic Blasphemy!
we need clones of JonSkeet in the world
that way every SO question would have two (or more) great answers
16:58
you know, since StackOverflow is named after a common programming blunder / problem, SuperUser should be too

@somequixotic call it Crash

@Psycogeek or BSOD :P
illegaloperation
@somequixotic i was going to say that, but then how do we cover unix and mac? "Error Request"
@somequixotic that works.
Bugs & Blunders
unix.stackexchange.com would be nsfd.com or "nosuchfileordirectory.com"
(most common unix error, imho)
ask different could become ds-store.com for the .DS_Store files that Mac loves to create to tick everybody off
17:05
Wonder if it would be harder to get advertising. With it called IllegalOperation? Mabey run some escort adds.
@somequixotic Why it creates these file?
@Boris_yo Similar to Thumbs.db
@somequixotic Don't forget the ._files on inferior file systems.
@DanielBeck Image cache files?

@DanielBeck Whoah! Dang did you notice it has over 1000 votes?

@DanielBeck is that the most upvoted answer on SU?
@somequixotic By a wide margin. The next ones are the cURL (540) and floppy drive (490) answers.
@DanielBeck this one is mere pedestrian dreck by comparison: superuser.com/questions/565883/…
@somequixotic Dont' complain, at least you have the 100 score badge. ;-)
17:21
@Psycogeek uhm, well, errm... okay.
@DanielBeck hehehe
What's "Ermagherd"?
@Boris_yo it's a heavily modified alternative pronunciation/spelling of "oh my God"

@somequixotic Say it after putting on teeth braces?
@Boris_yo yes :D

@somequixotic Then girls would find me unattractive. I already wear glasses.
@DanielBeck i dont get that huge VR box thing, when there has been sleek small lightweight 3D Vr head pieces that are way less ugly and smaller?

wow I was looking at the oculus rift,and i cant believe how genius it is on one side, and udeniably stupid on the other :-) On one side he took 1980s tech of having a video screen in your face, and mixed it with the new high res lcd and amoled phone screens. So basically he has 2 aspheric lenses going to a cell phone. Brilliant.
morning all
This, shot off my keyboard to show size, is a Lcd screen, they make and sell these things for about 4 years now, that could provide 2 eyes full 1080x1920 type resolutions. (but expencive for the high res)
