As SSDs become increasingly affordable, making the switch is increasingly tempting. However, there are very few drives with over 512GB of capacity, and those that exist are still far from affordable. One solution that works well for desktops and workstation replacement laptops is putting an SSD in one drive bay and a mechanical HDD in another. This is a bit trickier with smaller laptops though. A couple years ago, I experimented with moving the primary HDD to the optical bay, and installing an SSD to get the best of both worlds: fast performance and extra storage for bulky but less-used files. …

I'd rather not have this kind of "fun", thank you very much.
@Bob I was reading about the aus tele scam, mabey you have heard of it? They call and say they are microsoft, and ask you to look at some aspects of the computer, then say its all full of viruses and try to charge you?
Bob
Bob
@Psycogeek That's not just Aus. It's done pretty much worldwide.
They don't say "Microsoft", they have some vaguely official sounding name that sounds similar.
Macrosoft
10:32
After a few other failed attempts (at credid card) I could see the guys were starting to lose patience and then, out of the blue, something very bad happened. Without saying a word, the “remote Microsoft Technician” minimized the PayPal window and took on a mission to destroy all my personal files:
I could not believe my eyes. He went on exploring directories in search of other things to remove as fast as he could. When he could not find anything else worthy he could delete, he typed his last message: "bye asshole"

@Psycogeek if this happens, unplug LAN/modem ASAP!
"I was instructed to press the “Windows” and “R” as in Robert keys together to get to the Windows Run dialog box." - Who's Robert?
@slhck Great, now I know that hacking is all about speed of typing.
@Boris_yo lol. for $300 i am guessing i could keep these people tied up on the phone for 3-4 hours , before I even got to the pay-pal portion.
@Boris_yo Well, that, and doing it on the same keyboard. Simultaneously.

@Boris_yo Looks like it :P
@slhck You liked it? This anime was inspiration for Wachowskis to make Matrix by the way. Does movie has a little to do with it?

@Boris_yo Yeah, it's a good anime. I liked it.
@Bob You are being condescending. I know it is a joke.
@Psycogeek No I asked if you would cause problems for unsuspecting people for quick buck. In other words would you sell your soul to the devil for quick buck?
Bob
Bob
@Boris_yo Sorry. Tone doesn't transfer to text well, unfortunately.
@Bob Tone? My tone?
11:13
@Boris_yo I worked for corporations before didnt I? what was that :-)
@slhck And do you remember video clip in early 2000s called "King of my castle" from Wamdue Project? That clip featured fragments from movie. I am sure many as myself wondered what that anime was.
One time I (aparentaly) got on a "brokers" type of list saying that i had 1+million dollers invested in stocks. Quite a few brokers were calling, for the commission on 1mill they would stay on the phone for 1/2 hour long muted holds :-)
@Psycogeek Was checking your moral values.
@Boris_yo Yeah, I remember this. But I knew the anime before I saw the music video, I happened to be interested in that kind of stuff back then.
@slhck Since we were taking about speed aspect of hacking, there was part in anime where one robot deploys auxiliary fingers before he starts hitting keyboard, remember?
11:20
Yup
Something like that would be super nice to have.
@slhck Yeah, when paying online versus other players in video game. You could make career in that. By the way, you know what cybersport is?
She made me focus on the status of each Service and asked me once again to count how many “stopped” ones there were. When I gave her a ball park number, she retorted: “You are just guessing, I want you to count”. - How did she know the victim was guessing?
@Boris_yo Because he gave her the numbers too fast?
@Boris_yo or why did she even bother to require the counting? mabey it is a test to see how much BS the person is willing to put up with?
I know what cybersport is but, sports and me… meh.
What to do with a call center that is all set up $$ , and just lost its original contract with MS :-) turn on them with a vengance?
11:31
@slhck Seems like it.
@Psycogeek True also. Test of seriousness and loyalty.
please hold on for a minute, I am about to have lunch, and now my computer is all full of viruses. "hey honey , did you butcher that damn cow yet , I could eat a horse" :-)
@slhck But cybersport is unlike common sport.
@Psycogeek Is that intimidation for scammer?
@Boris_yo attempt at.
If somone knows what is going on, wouldnt they have the phone number (caller ID) and the IP address of the computer they are team viewing with?
@Boris_yo It takes some kind of dedication and time which I don't have.
After all I've got to look after you folks :P
@Psycogeek But you can not see caller ID in such situations.
11:42
@Boris_yo then that solves about every phone scam out there. "I am busy right now, if you give me your number i can call you bacK"
like say when hell freezes over or sometime after.
@slhck Not only that. It takes to many nerves, headaches and degradation of eyesight. And for what? To have your luck at something where only first 3 winners win? You are not guaranteed a pay here, you just hope you will win. What if you don't? Then all this anger, nervousness and strain gone down the toilet.
"At the end of the day, I haven’t really lost any documents since this was a Virtual Machine and not an actual computer." - Good thinking.

Well, I mentioned them in my fav. comics page
(It's avail. in the menu)
Bob
Bob
12:37
@CrazyBuddy "just a blog" doesn't matter
you cannot use the content without permission
xkcd gives permission:
> This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 2.5 License.
But that means you MUST attribute it when you use it.
Alrighty then... I'll put them tonight, before they call the cops :P
@Bob: You scare me... But, does that mean I should insert links for each & every comic I take? o_O
Bob
Bob
@CrazyBuddy For xkcd, you should attribute it to the author.
That would make the page quite dull
Bob
Bob
The other comics, depends on how they are licenced, if at all.
You can just have a little caption under each image.
I'd better do it this way...
> That is, you don't need my permission to post these pictures on your website (and hotlinking with <img> is fine); just include a link back to this page
Take their image link and link that to their page ;)
Bob
Bob
12:50
@CrazyBuddy Nope. CC attribution rules.
> Attribution — You must give the original author credit.
@Bob I know... But, that phrase is taken from XKCD policy...
They state it...
Whatever... I'll write it out... I didn't think this would be a mess... -_-
Bob
Bob
Why are you makign this such a big deal?
@Bob I mean, I've used a lot of comics (if you've seen the next post)
Now, I've to search for whatever I used..!!!
Bob
Bob
A little caption under the image saying "Increased Risk taken from xkcd with permission under CC-BY-NC" would be enough.
In fact, a little more than necessary.
@CrazyBuddy Note that those particular licensing rulesa re ONLY for xkcd
other comics may be different
some may not allow external use at all
12:57
o_O
I'll see...
13:09
BTW, @Bob: SMBC doesn't provide a license... o_O
@CrazyBuddy Not that anyone's gonna come chasing after you but… you like that webcomic? Why not point users to Abstruse Goose? It'll make the author happy.
Instead of just putting in an anonymous image you pulled from the web.
And while there is copyright on the original, embedding it somewhere, citing the source could be considered fair use in an otherwise non-commercial blog post.
@slhck Well, I've pointed that out in another page of mine...
Note the last line...
What do you say? :)
Ah, that's nice
@slhck: Thanks for the suggestion :)
I mean, I personally would add a link of each image you put into an article.
13:19
@slhck Okay.. I'll do that :)
You know, just a suggestion :) But that's how it's usually done. Citing all the material that is not owned or created by you.
I know that... But, I didn't expect that it should be done for a blog :D
@CrazyBuddy i agree with what they are saying, wordpress will lock you out on a complaint, untill it complies.
I think it's a nice gesture to apply anywhere in your life.
Whether it's writing a blog article, using someone's idea, et cetera.
ahh...
13:22
@CrazyBuddy: Its nice to people. Also if something is good enough to share, why not share it so people can find the comic?
(tho, I use something off a comic as a ava elsewhere. The MOMENT anyone asks, they get a link, and me saying how awesome the comic is)
Thank you superusers @Bob @slhck @JourneymanGeek @Psycogeek :)

Hi @slhck
hello everyone :)
Hi @PavanK
So… I'm not sure I understood what exactly you meant by dumping
I just want the files to be stitched. I do not want them to be re-encoded as they lose their source props once you re-encode
Yeah, you don't have to re-encode them. This is what -c copy does after concatenating them.
I don't know if I am making sense :)
13:44
It copies the bitstream as-is.
But the problem is that this sometimes results in the video being unplayable.
yup but the video doesn't play
exactly
any idea why
?
I can only imagine it is because the original videos weren't encoded exactly the same.
Where are they from?
From the camera
Hmm. I'm not sure. Does the file play when you re-encode? (i.e. leave out the -c copy and replace it with what I suggested in the comments)
let me try
13:54
@Psycogeek What you need to do is deploy solar nodes interconnected around the globe so when one part of the globe experiences night, you have another part with sun out and transferring energy to your conditioner. Our how about creating a dome made of air conditioners that works on solar power that would cover earth's sky?
@slhck it works but it changes the bitrate of the video and I don't want to do that
Any workarond?
around*
@Boris_yo because that would end the earth as we know it :-) Have you seen the movie "The Colony" yet?
@PavanK Hm. It depends. I'm not sure if this can be considered a bug already. Could be worth submitting a report. Could you maybe give me two or three sample files?
Just something really short.
@Psycogeek I did not see.
Hmm I have to upload them somewhere, give me a bit and I will send the links :)
13:58
@PavanK That'd be great. I'll try and reproduce it when I'm at home again and create a bug report if needed.
@Boris_yo the premise is , Future earth , global warming was attempted to be fixed by man made machine, it started snowing, and did not stop.

That's new
@slhck: I know, right?
@JourneymanGeek Apart from that it's not bad though.
@Boris_yo The rating for "The colony" is about par for a 4.5-5.0 kind of movie. it is fully watchable. it becomes a bit corney when they run into the "bad guys".
@slhck Its not really added, ramhound removed it, and changed the meaning in the first paralaugh. the anon edit is better IMO.

Bob
Heh.
@JourneymanGeek Remember this?
Jul 17 at 11:58, by Bob
@JourneymanGeek Actually, last I heard, Windows doesn't rely on the battery-operated RTC while the computer is powered on.
Seems that was actually correct.
@Bob that is odd, even back in XP and WIn7 times there was the Rare overclock that the "clock" on the computer would get way off over and again.
Bob
Bob
15:06
@Psycogeek Ya, well, it's been commented elsewhere that Windows would only read the RTC at startup.
apparently so
Bob
Bob
Apart from that, the CPU's timing components are considered reliable enough, and it saves power.
Not sure if that applied to XP and Win7, but I wouldn't be surprised.
Amusingly I got the router that @bob did not want me to get :P

@Bob there have also been similar Linux kernel bugs in the past, although nowadays if you use an actual stable kernel you shouldn't experience anything like that
Bob
Bob
@somequixotic The clock thing? Supposedly intentional.
yeah but Linux has done it accidentally in the past :P
Bob
Bob
And, at least in that article, only confirmed when under/overclocking...
I guess it's worse to do it intentionally though haha
15:14
@Bob stopwatch . When i really want to know "how fast is it" I have it do a real task, instead of some repetitive one, and use a stopwatch to time it for real.
Bob
Bob
xD
@Psycogeek Hm? The vast majority of the time, human reaction time will make far more of a difference than a little clock drift as described in that article.
I guess if you were measuring over a long period of time, but then you could synchronise with NTP.
Or you were heavily over/underclocking. Maybe.
I know! benchmarks could use server-side timing: at least for benchmarks that time the amount of time it takes to compute a hash (effectively bitcoin computing benchmarks), you could run the benchmark long enough (several minutes; hours would be better) so that internet latency would be mere noise (<0.001% even if there's a latency spike), and you'd be unable to cheat the system by artificially sending the "I'm done" packet because the "I'm done" packet requires you to compute something
then just make sure the server uses a secure and accurate timer and wait to see how many hashes can be computed by a contestant in, say, 3 hours
if they're really unlucky and there's a 2 second latency spike, who cares? I can't see the #1 and #2 contestant in a 3 hour test only being 2 seconds different... the #1 guy is going to have some kind of super cooling rig or ASICs or a custom driver or OS that lets him run 1 or 2% faster, which will eclipse the 2 second mark over 10,800 seconds
They would run out of Liquid nitrogen :-)
or periodically ping the server and account for that.

@JourneymanGeek any meaningful ping is by definition bidirectional (round trip), and you can game the system by artificially stalling your responses on the client side, so you can't use pings
Bob
Bob
15:22
@JourneymanGeek That's more of a "why even bother answering, just delete the question" kind of thing :P
the contestant could artificially hold up pings just long enough to avoid the timeout.... if the timeout is 30 seconds, set the ping delay to 28 seconds, and the server will think "gee, this guy's internet sucks, we have to deduct 28 seconds from his score", and when they do that they're giving him an unfair advantage because he can send his last result with no delay
unless they do it like BTC mining and just have them report in when they finish each batch and the goal is to finish as many batches as possible in X amount of real time
that would be fairly hard to game, I think

@OliverSalzburg Being in germany i was wondering if you knew anything about german GPS? They were launching sattalites , for thier own version of gps or something?
@CanadianLuke If that's a linguistic pun, it's lost on me, sorry
@Psycogeek Right, let me look up the name
Galileo is a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) currently being built by the European Union (EU) and European Space Agency (ESA). The €5 billion project is named after the Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei. One of the aims of Galileo is to provide a high-precision positioning system upon which European nations can rely, independently from the Russian GLONASS, US GPS, and Chinese Compass systems, which can be disabled in times of war or conflict. When in operation, it will use two ground operations centres near Munich in Germany and in Fucino in Italy. In December 2010, EU ...
Bob
Bob
@Psycogeek There's a Euro system called Galileo.
...he beat me to it.
There's also a Chinese one.

heh, the US GPS system is operated by the Air Force, although IIRC it can be used (nearly) worldwide
Bob

Only GPS and GLONASS are completed at the moment, though.

Bob
Bob
@ThatBrazilianGuy I probably originally heard it by its Chinese name. BeiDou.
@somequixotic My Lumia phone has GLONASS.
@OliverSalzburg I was wondering if the present gps is not so good? If the new version would be "different" in such a way as to have 2 systems, or GPS recievers that would need to expand thier thinking?

The positioning (not sure if it uses GPS/GLONASS, and my N8 GPS-only was similar) is instant and works inside most small buildings
@Bob yeah so does my Razr Maxx HD because it's supposed to be a "True World Phone", meaning you can get cellular voice, some kind of data, and GPS, worldwide

Oh, the US GPS is supposed to be worldwide coverage IIRC
@Psycogeek Well, to my understanding, "they" don't want to rely on the US. And Galileo supposedly has better accuracy
at least in most industrialized countries

@OliverSalzburg GPS is very very accurate... for US military use.

@OliverSalzburg that's the main reason for having more than one GPS system, yeah, because the US owns the system normally called "GPS"
Bob
Bob
There's a couple phases not licensed for civilian use, which are required for the higher accuracy.
frankly I wouldn't be surprised if US budget cuts cause the GPS system to languish and eventually fail

@somequixotic It is failing.
Satellites are dying, and they aren't replacing all of them when they should.
@Bob my GPS tells me I have between 9 and 13 satellites able to see me, whether I'm in a building, car, or outside, in US and Canada, consistently, at any time of day
@Bob isn't Baidu the Chinese Twitter?

as far as I can tell it's still working okayish
