00:00 - 04:0004:00 - 00:00

4:00 AM
It is very weird to see a random lady on this road, for one thing - it's not at all a common traveling road. For another, this woman seems to be faking the limp.
She doesn't seem to mean you harm, though.

(Danger level?)
(Does leave perceive her as a threat?)

You get "lawful good" or "neutral good" vibes.

Lae relaxes a little bit.

Ink thinks that anyone with an ordinary non-aggressive animal is probably okay, but he is somewhat biased on this point.

"I just realized I haven't introduced myself, bah." She extends a hand to you. "Mathina Redburn, at your service."

4:01 AM
(Lmaoooo okay 'borg)

(:p)

Lae shakes her hand. "Lae. Nice to meet you."
"It's dangerous around these areas and the terrain here can be rough. Perhaps we may be able to assist you on your journey, if you might be travelling in the same direction?"

"Charmed!" She pumps your hand vigorously, then lets go. "I'd love to travel with you - but I have some rather urgent business. I must be checking on some friends. Just wanted to see what things were like around here."
Her gaze travels to Ink. "You're an interesting one, especially."

(In common?)

She switches to Draconic. "I imagine this tongue is more comfortable for you?"

4:05 AM
Ink pats down Club's nose and then looks up, "Oʜ. Gʀᴇᴇᴛɪɴɢs M'ʟᴀᴅʏ..."

Lae startles a little bit.
"Where you be heading?"

Ink nods his head a little, ears swiveling forwards with interest.

Mathina's attention is still fixed on Ink. Ink, you get a strange sense of recognition. This woman is familiar.

Astrid is keeping quiet but staring intently at the seagull

Something makes Ink reach a paw around the pebble at his chest and he raises it up toward the woman.

4:09 AM
Through the stone, after a moment of a strange magical distortion that almost feels like an illusion clearing, you see that the woman's form is... neutrois, shapeless, something magical disguising itself, a creature in a human's guise. From its feet, a great winged shadow stretches. You remember an orb of light that you had to choose, at random, in a realm you did not understand. This creature, whatever it is, has their eyes.
The eyes blink. "You're very curious indeed, Ink."

Lae looks at Ink in a strange way. "Ink, what are you doing?"
"You look a little strange, my friend."

Ink murmurs softly, "Hᴏᴘᴇғᴜʟʟʏ ɪᴛ ᴡɪʟʟ ɴᴏᴛ ʟᴇᴀᴅ ᴛᴏ ᴛʜᴇ ᴜsᴜᴀʟ ʀᴇsᴜʟᴛ, M'ʟᴀᴅʏ." and he smiles ironically at himself, his mottled appearance already a statement.

The woman laughs, but through the stone, it sounds to you like a rumbling sound, like stones shifting. "You're hardly a cat that can be killed, my friend."

"Mᴀʏʜᴀᴘs ᴍʏ ᴘᴀᴛʀᴏɴ ᴡɪʟʟ ᴄᴏɴᴛɪɴᴜᴇ ɢᴜɪᴅᴇ ᴍᴇ ᴏɴ ᴛʜᴇ ᴏʙsᴄᴜʀᴇ ᴘᴀᴛʜs." He smiles, and not having understood Lae's question, "Is ᴛʜᴇʀᴇ ᴀᴜɢʜᴛ ᴡᴇ ᴄᴀɴ ᴅᴏ ғᴏʀ ʏᴏᴜ ᴛᴏ ᴀssɪsᴛ?"

Her appearance keeps shifting through your view from the stone - sometimes male, the guise of a soldier who took a crossbow bolt to the knee, and sometimes female, this guise. The voice in your head is decidedly male now, however. "We all follow paths we do not quite understand, Ink. Perhaps soon, you will have the answers."
"Keep with your friends, and be brave - that is how you can help."

4:16 AM
Ink nods slightly and smiles wryly, "As ʏᴏᴜ ᴡɪsʜ. Iɴsᴛʀᴜᴄᴛɪᴏɴs ᴛʜᴀᴛ I ᴡᴏᴜʟᴅ ʙᴇ ᴄᴏᴍᴘᴇʟʟᴇᴅ ᴛᴏ ғᴏʟʟᴏᴡ ᴀɴʏᴡᴀʏ ᴀʀᴇ ᴍᴏsᴛ ᴡᴇʟᴄᴏᴍᴇ."

Still fidgeting.

He laughs again, that rumbling sound. "The strings of fate, I suppose."

He drops the stone back to his chest and bows his head in deference. "I ᴡɪʟʟ ᴀʟᴡᴀʏs ʙᴇ ʙʀᴀᴠᴇ... ᴀᴛ ʟᴇᴀsᴛ ғᴏʀ ᴍʏ ғʀɪᴇɴᴅs. Tʜᴀᴛ ᴍᴜᴄʜ ɪs ᴄʟᴇᴀʀ ᴇᴠᴇɴ ᴛᴏ ᴍᴇ."

Lae has been watching this conversation, rather baffled.

The amorphous creature in turn bows to you, deferring. "You are a good and kind creature. Do not led evil lead you astray."
Outside the stone-view, the limping woman returns her gaze to Lae, seemingly unruffled by the long conversation in Draconic that has just taken place between her and Ink. "I imagine you must be getting along, now. Tread carefully in the Hollows - it can be quite dangerous if you stray off the path."

4:21 AM
Ink shivers slightly, hackles raising briefly as if in premonition, and then looks away to tend to Clubs again.

"What... was that?"

Ink clears his throat and says in Sylvan, "Do you have any advice for the paths ahead?"
(Can I roll Arcana for a more accurate guess of what type of being they are? :P

"Yes, thank you."

The woman nods. "The forest is full of dangers, but only if you wander too far. And as for the temple... I think your elven companion will find it interesting."
(Sure, Arcana works)

(16 + 2 = 18

4:30 AM
A huge winged shadow, a good alignment and polymorphing abilities with a variety of human disguises can really only belong to one creature that Ink is aware of. Metallic dragons are powerful, and usually friendly and interested in helping humans. It's also possible for some dragons to have prophetic glimpses of things, like your patron's ability to see through time. Perhaps there's a reason this one has taken an interest in your party in particular.

(Those were my guesses based on my knowledge, not Ink's ^^;

She's still watching you with that knowing look, seemingly with a what are you looking at? kind of playfulness.
"As I said, I really should be going, so if there's nothing else I can do for you..."

Ink looks uncomfortable a moment and then says in Sylvan, "... I... would ask you for more direct instructions, but... At least accept my humblest apologies for not being able to prevent ..." he trails.

She softens immediately, with a great sorrow evident in her voice. "There was nothing you could have done. I regret that I can only save so many."

(Sylvan or Draconic?)

4:38 AM
(Sylvan, on purpose :) )

"Cali is killing any hatchlings she can get her claws on. She sends her minions to do the same. To think that you would be so desperate to get your own child back that you kill other children... it is something we cannot comprehend."
She shakes her head. "There is darkness at play. It is not your fault."

"Cali...?"
"Who is that?"

Ink nods slightly, "... She is searching for her child ... and others are being puppetted by her..." he says this kind of thoughtfully so as to clear the initial dream interpretation. "... An elder red dragon..?"

"Dragons shouldn't be killed."

(Ink means "elder" in the informal sense, not a manual entry...

4:41 AM
"An ancient one, yes. She has... clearly succumbed to madness. I am not powerful enough to stop her alone." She looks out at the distance. "But if my plans go well, we should have... help, soon enough."
"It will depend on the halfling and the human... and the child... and you."

Ink nods slightly, "... May I ask about the Priest of Pan..? Efren?"

"The Priest of Pan...?" She smiles warmly at Astrid. "Your... well, I suppose not your father. But something close?"

"Something close." Still fidgeting.

She gestures gently. "May I see your bracelet, Astrid?"

Ink quiets, letting this introduction to the topic open the way for his friend to ask about what is clearly on her mind.

4:47 AM
"My... bracelet?"

Lae just watches quietly.

"It's special to you, I know. Can I look at it?"

"Uh... " Astrid has to feel around it a bit to find the clasp. ".... here? Be careful, please"

She takes the bracelet and holds it very gently in her hand, like it's made of glass and could break. "He gave you this?"

"Didn't say where he got it from... thought I would like the pattern." Astrid is keeping a very careful eye on the bracelet

4:50 AM
She smiles. "Did he tell you what it was?"

"A way to focus Pan's magic"

"Yes, it is a focus." She touches the patterns on the bracelet. "These symbols, though... they mean something."

"What?"

"Take good care of this. I think it would be better if he explained." She gently offers it back. "Are you worried about him, Astrid?"

"Of course... ! He just left... do you know if he's okay?"

4:54 AM
"I imagine he was very reluctant to leave you. But I think there was a reason. He is all right, for now."
She is studying you in a warmly inquisitive way, as though trying not to spook you.

"He left on purpose?" Astrid's face starts scrunching up.

"He intended to come back. I think something got in the way. Oh, don't cry..."
"He loved you very much."

Astrid looks away (or at least gives up pretending to look her in the eye) "You promise?"

"Yes. Of course." She brushes your shoulder. "Love is the strongest thing in the universe. Even stronger than time, or death."

Mar 2 at 23:03, by bobble
oh - not sure if this affects anything - but Astrid has the flower cloak in their pack to keep it safe while travelling. don't want to have flashy magic around "hey, steal me!"

5:00 AM
(timey-wimey retcon-able events :)

"Thank... you." Astrid secure the bracelet back on and focuses on it.

"We must be heading now. Do you have any tips?"

"Stronger than time," she says. She looks at Lae. "But alas, you've indulged my weakness for conversation. You really must be going."

Ink reaches out a paw to Astrid to offer to help them back up onto their horse.

She starts to limp off. "Be careful of the woods, and do not lose hope, friends."

5:04 AM
Astrid accepts the help and swings back up

"Tʜᴀɴᴋ ʏᴏᴜ ғᴏʀ ʏᴏᴜʀ ᴡᴏʀᴅs ᴏғ ᴡɪsᴅᴏᴍ ᴀɴᴅ ... ᴇɴᴄᴏᴜʀᴀɢᴇᴍᴇɴᴛ, M'ʟᴏʀᴅ. Wᴇ ᴡɪʟʟ ᴅᴏ ᴏᴜʀ ʙᴇsᴛ." Ink calls out as they leave.

"Thank you." Lae still looks confused by the whole ordeal.

She gives Ink a little wink as she leaves.

Ink pats Astrid's horse's nose and then offers the other horse to Lae, "Do you need some rest from walking, friend?"

Lae shakes his head. "Don't worry about me. Let's keep moving."

5:07 AM
Astrid looks off into nowhere, rowing back on the currents of memory

Astrid, your bracelet feels oddly... warm, after the woman gave it back to you. It seems to be having a calming effect on your nerves, just a little.

Ink nods and then swings up into the saddle, guiding his horse gently to reform the party order: Lae scouting ahead, Astrid in the middle and Ink following so that he knows where everyone is... not that that is obsessive or anything.

(Any objections to travelling to Hollow until something happens?)

(mostly a lack of opportunity for a camp scene with banter)

(Ink can ritually create a campsite! :D <3

5:15 AM
(camp banter :D)

(Can I ask the fae spirits of the woods to help build us a campsite and get firewood and suchly? I want there to be lots of little kodama that come help ^^:

(OMG yes)

(With the tokkatokkatokka heads ^^:

(spell?)

(Wild Cunning...

5:18 AM
(yeah :D)

> Send the spirits to bring back wood for a fire and to set up a campsite in the area using your supplies. The spirits build the fire in a circle of stones, put up tents, unroll bedrolls, and put out any rations and water for consumption.

How does Ink cast it?

I assume we ride until there's a good clearing for the night?

Presumably yeah

While Ink is casting, Lae goes to find food and firewood
(rolling survival... 12+7=19)

5:23 AM
Hmmm. I feel like he sits in a clearing and begins by putting one paw on his Book of Shadows and another holding the pebble from Fae and he calls out to the forest and thanks it for being safe and the trees for providing shade, etc. And then gives a small offering of various elements... water, his breath, some dirt from the ground, something like that.

When you finish casting, there is a moment of silence; the trees ripple gently with wind, and the grass waves in the breeze. At first you see nothing...
...then a very tiny, white, large-headed creature with nubby arms and legs pokes its head out from behind a mushroom.
It blinks at you, and then waddles towards the campsite on its little legs.

Astrid has been taking stuff out of their pack but turns to watch

A couple more creatures appear and they start to build a little fire, put up the tents, and make camp preparations, bustling around you like a little ant colony. One of them starts trying to crawl on Astrid's knee.

"Hey - hey!"

5:27 AM
(Lae is obviously not here so he doesn't know what's going on)

The creature blinks at Astrid with wide eyes.
Then it waddles off.

(was I successful in my roll borg)

"Ink, what's happening?"

The little forest spirits finish making the camp, and a few of them start bringing little flowers and making a little circle around both of you.

Ink smiles and says quietly, "I ... asked the forest to help us make camp..?"

5:29 AM
They slowly build a flower circle around each of you, and then gather together, apparently proud of their work.

"Oh - they're nature spirits?"

Ink nods gently, "Yes... they are the spirits of that live in forests and trees..."

The one that was trying to crawl on Astrid wanders back over and stands there, blinking at you.
It seems fascinated by you.

Lae comes back with his hands full of firewood and berries and other food.

Astrid pats its head. "Hi."

5:30 AM
"gah!!! What are those things?!"
He takes out his rapier and readies Hunter's Mark

The little spirit glows brightly when you pet it, and seems really thrilled.

Ink looks up at Lae, "Shhh... It's okay... they live here. They were helping make camp."

The spirit pokes Astrid's knee again. It seems to want to climb.

"Wha- wha-" He looks around suspiciously. "I can make a camp just fine. Heck, who needs a camp? Just sleep on the ground."

Astrid kneels down a little bit

5:33 AM
Ink takes a small seedloaf from one of his provisions and breaks it up into small seeds for the kodama to take, he figures that maybe they will awaken them into plants somewhere.

The spirit glows brighter when you get closer. It seems to be reacting to your energy somehow.

He looks like he's going to take a swing at one of the creatures.

The other kodama, meanwhile, happily move to take the seeds offered by Ink.
They look at Lae in obvious terror.

Lae looks back in equal terror

"Who are you?" Astrid examines the kodama

5:34 AM
"Are you sure you've summoned these, Ink? I have never seen these creatures in the forest."

"Lae..." Ink says gently, "You don't need to fear them... they are just forest spirits... they have always been around us. I just didn't know how to ask them to help until the Temple of Pan."

Lae obviously looks uncomfortable still.
He hasn't put his rapier back in.

The glowing kodama stills. Astrid hears a soft, childlike whisper in their mind. "Can I come with you?"

"Do you have a name?"

Ink chuckles at the one with Astrid, "See... they clearly know a cleric of Pan when they sense one... You are tied to trees and nature, after all."

5:36 AM
"I am Himari," the child's voice whispers.

"Himari, I'd be honored to travel with a nature spirit."

Lae growls at one of the nature spirits that came waddling near the firewood.
"I can make camp just fine, thanks."

The kodama glows very brightly, and gestures to Astrid's shoulder.

Lae now looks more insulted that Ink had set up camp without Lae.

(what size is it, relative to Astrid?)

5:38 AM
(very, very small.)

"Lives alone for for decades in the woods, can't even be trusted make tent." grumble grumble

Ink grins a little at Lae, "I hope you took those from the ground..."

Astrid offers a hand for Himari to climb onto

Ink sees that Lae is unhappy and softens slightly. "Friend... I asked so that you might relax after walking all day instead of having to toil for us further. Come, be at peace... Please?"

Himari happily climbs onto your hand and crawls up to perch on your shoulder. You feel a very faint little weight there.
The other spirits disappear and flee into the woods.

5:40 AM
Astrid carefully unpacks the flower cloak and brings a part near Himari, to see their reaction

Himari glows brightly and touches the cloak, seemingly very interested in the item.

"This is Himari." Astrid announces to Ink and Lae, oblivious to their conversation

Ink looks up at Astrid and smiles softly, "Greetings, Himari. I see you have made the wisest choice."

Himari waves their small arm-nub happily, still glowing.

Astrid sweeps the cloak on, deftly picking up Himari and the necessary moment and then depositing them back on top of the cloak

5:45 AM
Himari cuddles up on your shoulder, and their glow fades. They seem to now be asleep.

"What are we eating?" Astrid settle next to the fire.

Ink looks back at Lae and sighs softly, and begins making a meal from his homeland that he happens to know Lae likes, as a peace offering.
(lol - that was a coincidence... ^^;

Astrid has taken out their religious book and is consulting some favorite passages

(oh my goodness we should end, i just realized it's super late :p)
(ahhhh)

(So... I wonder what that is... I only invented Ink's favourite :/

5:50 AM
(we can stop and figure it out later)

(oh! probably - I usually am guided on time by bobble and North ;p

I'm glad we gave Astrid and Ink some cool spotlight time :)

Thank you ^^; That was unexpected >.>;

See camp scenes are important <.<

Ink will probably also explain who that was now that they are away from the "woman" and will be very respectful in description ^^:

5:52 AM
i love how North immediately figured me out

For some reason I've been internally pronouncing Himari as Ḥïmarï

Forest Buddies <3

would it be wrong to call the kodama mushrooms?

i'm not actually sure of the full lore behind them - Gray might know

uhm - they are just full on Japanese forest spirits that are ... well trees?

Session 16: An Army of Trees

welp, they are canon now :p

Kodama (木霊, 木魂 or 木魅) are spirits in Japanese folklore that inhabit trees. The term is also used to denote a tree in which a kodama supposedly resides. The phenomenon known as yamabiko, when sounds make a delayed echoing effect in mountains and valleys, is sometimes attributed to this kind of spirit and may also be referred to as "kodama". == Summary == These spirits are considered to nimbly bustle about mountains at will. A kodama's outer appearance is very much like an ordinary tree, but if one attempts to cut it down, one would become cursed, etc., and it is thus considered to have some kind...

At some point I switched to title case for the session titles

They feature in Princess Mononoke, which is awesome if you haven't seen it.

haven't watched much Studio Ghibli, but i hear Princess Mononoke is really good :)

5:56 AM
Sorry I had to walk the dogs :P

They are just little curious spirits in magic forests.

I look forward to when Lae gets to the temple :p

@PrinceNorthLæraðr No worries - we need to work out what kind of food Ink always makes to make when Lae is unhappy ^^;

It appears to be not technically wrong if I call them trees, and I like "An Army of Trees"

Kodama is also used to mean a tree that a spirit lives in... so technically they are the spirit and the tree ^^:

5:58 AM
in that case, Astrid now has a happy Tree tagging along :D

I feel like before we leave, Astrid may need to take a cutting of a tree with her for Himari... or some such thing.
Or grow a seedling from a tree seed, perhaps, with Druidcraft :)

Lae just being annoyed at them made me laugh

bobble must zzz

good night bobble <3

nini bobble! o/
Ooooh - maybe Himari has a flowering tree and Astrid can just tuck a flower from that tree into the cloak!!

6:00 AM
ooooh!!!
the name means "jasmine" or "sunflower" or "light and love" depending on the translation
so they could easily be a flowering tree <3

^^
Thankyou 'borg :)

:D
any story is improved with Tree Buddies
borg must now zzzzzz
