1:06 AM
@MathCubes uhm...
what are you actually trying to do?
uhm, usually no
Even if I've done worse

The cable's resistance is likely to be a problem. Devices at the end of the cable could see too low a voltage.

or catch fire
@MathCubes you're almost certainly better off using different rails

If you do in fact need to do that, try to daisy-chain as close to the power supply as possible. The shorter the length of the cable run, the better.

maybe use a modular power supply - they'd give you 6x sata I guess, then use molex to sata converters for more

Also, have you considered an actual SATA backplane device?

1:09 AM
@bwDraco assuming they're not showhorning them into a normal case...
A modern PC has plenty (ludicious?) sata ports without a backplane

@JourneymanGeek I wouldn't consider eight (as is the case on Astaroth) to be ludicrous.

I would!
So, in the old days, back when policemen wore long pants....
You'd have two IDE ports for 4 drives.

Of course.

Most cases don't have space for more than 4-6 unless you got something like my old cosair 600T
On a modern build you'd likely run your OS on a M.2 (and new build motherboards have at least 2).
We don't really do optical drives any more
Its kinda sunsetting like floppy drives where its either an "in case" thing, or you buy some cheap USB drive, or happen to have one from a few PCs ago.

You have a point. Setups with more than two drives are uncommon these days.

1:14 AM
I think the most I ran was 3 drives - OS, bulk storage and a drive for games

And folks who do need lots of drives are more likely to be using them with a NAS appliance rather than a desktop PC.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek /me looks at extra SAS card

(there's probably a good/strange reason for having all those ports though - parts reuse)

(there's three internal drives on Astaroth, one M.2 and two SATA, all SSDs)

@Bob Outlier though, and sas card is a sensible way to put in ludicious amounts of disks
On the other hand, I suspect that modern drive controllers support all those drives anyway (and shared blocks with servers)
and the cost of supporting them is marginal

Bob
1:16 AM
@JourneymanGeek I was actually preferring a SATA card but they don't make 'em like that
@JourneymanGeek Mostly the cost of routing traces through the mobo, IIRC

@Bob actually I suspect that would cost about the same to make
and there's much more complicated things, like say PCIe
and then, board makers add more ports - my old asus had an additional onboard controller
Never really checked on this one

PCIe is expensive, and most applications that handle extremely large amounts of data (terabytes or more) only need SATA-level speeds.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Yea, that's a selling point to some people (*cough*)
Though that was more in the days when the chipset didn't support as many
Or didn't support all SATA 3
@JourneymanGeek Well... I've seen mobos with 4 ports
heck, I've got a Dell box here with 3

Father's desktop supports only three SATA ports.

Bob
and a 4th spot on the board that's lacking the connector
not sure if it's routed

1:21 AM
And it's AMD B350 and not some ancient chipset.

Ok, enthusiast boards have ludicious amounts of ports? ;p

Bob
lol
my enthusiast board only has 6 :(

The M.2 SSD only supports PCIe 2.0 (which I suspect is due to it hanging off the chipset).
Again, eight SATA ports on Astaroth (ASUS ROG Crosshair VI Extreme).

Bob
but then it went with more M.2 rather than more SATA, and a couple of them double as SATAe
And, well, SAS expansion. So yea.
In hindsight maybe I should've gotten the SAS card with 1+1 external/internal
Grab one of those HP storage boxes that supports like 24/48 HDDs...

lol
dell has them too
and you could probably get them second hand
I haven't checked on this

Bob
1:24 AM
The problem is USB externals are much cheaper per TB
and I can't be arsed shucking them

The board has two M.2 slots; one of them is beneath a heatsink that goes on top of the southbridge heatsink and uses the Ryzen SSD lanes; the other shares bandwidth with the second PCIe slot (and would therefore reduce graphics card bandwidth to x8 if used).

Looks like this week is going to be great for cycling

My case would at most do 2 3.5 inch, and 1 5.25 inch (which could be converted to 2.5 inch bays in plural)
I'm likely going the dedicated, non ludicous NAS route in future

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Didn't you have a big-ish case?

The 760T can accept four 2.5-inch drives (7mm z-height) and six 3.5" drives.

1:26 AM
@Bob downgraded from the 600T to a coolermaster dealie
I have the 600T still

Bob
think mine's 4x 2.5", 6x 3.5/2.5", 3x 5.25"
which is far more bays than I have had SATA ports

Need to fire it up at some point, that's 8x 3.5 inch bays, 2x 5.25 inch bays

Bob
ah yea
good ol' huge corsair cases :D
you could chuck a cheapie board in it and turn it into a NAS

I need to see if it runs, was freezing after boot, so mught run linux and some stress tests.
@Bob that's what I was looking at those chinese xeons for.
the lower end ones look fun for a home server/nas

Bob
I'm not really a fan of NASes though... 1GbE isn't quite enough and 10GbE is still expensive

1:27 AM
And three 5-1/4" bays (the top one of which may collide with a larger liquid cooler; planning to swap out the H100i v2 with a H115i RGB Platinum when I upgrade the CPU)

@Bob if its short range/single PC, 10gbe DAS looked cheap

Bob
unless I end up actually needing the network access, I'd much rather USB

Yeah. Consider the Drobo 5c?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek What, extra cards for a direct link?
I suppose that could work...

(USB Type-C DAS appliance with five drive bays)

Bob
1:29 AM
Pity 10GbE switches cost so much
I think my cabling would support it

@Bob ACTUALLY.....

Bob
@JourneymanGeek L5520s are cheap :D
dual L5520s are cheap :D

Bob
only problem is DDR2 isn't so cheap

craft computing reviewed this
@Bob thats what I like about those chinese xeons

Bob
1:32 AM
@JourneymanGeek would need SFP modules :\

@Bob or DAS cables
which seem pretty cheap

Bob
@JourneymanGeek DAS cable?

direct attach ment?

Bob
o.O

Bob
1:34 AM
kinda ruins the whole point of having a switch if you're limited to like 3m

Bob
problem is 10GBASE-T costs >$80
maybe I should rewire the house with fibre...
OM3's pretty cheap

Bob
and 10GBASE-SR is like $25

This is how it starts

Bob
1:35 AM
I'll blame you :P

This folks, is why I should NEVER become a drug lord

lol

Bob
@JourneymanGeek so apparently the L5520 supports DDR3
LGA 1366 boards are $80 on eBay

@Bob Thankfully, I don't have the space/time for now XD

Bob
A pair of L5520s is $20
what. why.

1:45 AM
I've had some pretty nsfw AliExpress suggestions recently.

.... its 6.90 on aliexpress.
@Bob still inclined towards the LGA 2011 setups

Bob
@JourneymanGeek It was $20 local shipped :P
AUD, mind
@JourneymanGeek A bit more modern? :P

Yup
but
My old core i7 should probably still work
It kinda lagged a lot the last time I fired it up
but it costs me... nothing
Just need to find the time to reinstall the OS

Bob
lol

(I have a week'a break coming up)

Q: Bridge two NICs

TechSteveBrule(I know next to nothing about networking, so bear with me.) I have a Linux board with two NICs. One will only be connected to another board, the other will connect to a network. I need to make the other board able to reach the network, likely broadcast UPD onto that network and have things conne...

you just need to... literally bridge the two interfaces right?
I recall doing this in windows before

3:16 AM
https://www.engadget.com/2019/07/14/microsoft-shuts-down-internet-games/

> The first ones to lose access will be Windows XP and Windows ME users.
And someone in the comments goes "Don't you know how old XP systems are?"
ME systems are like... up to 18 or so years old

1 hour later…
4:34 AM
@JourneymanGeek But you can get customs ones that long
Here is one for 9
@bwDraco
Thoughts

Can't recommend it. The wiring on the SATA power connectors looks very flimsy.

3 hours later…
7:53 AM
@JourneymanGeek nah, XP is 18, as old as me. ME is older.
@MathCubes still kinda saddens me

1 hour later…
9:12 AM
ME came after XP, before Vista
Didn't it?
oh god it's so long ago I don't remember.

Yes
ME and 2K were at about the same time

yah, me meaning Millenium.

Then XP was kind of merging the "home" and "pro" OSes into one

Bob
10:09 AM
I'm so confused
Why are people saying ME came later? o_O
ME was 2000, XP was 2002

10:27 AM
@Bob old age and senility
The point I was trying to make was ME machines are so old... people didn't even comment on em

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Well yea, that describes ME and XP pretty well

@Bob I wouldn't accuse XP of being senile
its that old goat who's about 200 and refusing to die due to sheer spite.
Actually also true of OS/2 I guess
._.

10:54 AM
ME, then XP, Then Vista?
fair enough, like i said, can't remmeber

11:08 AM
XP was released to manufacturing on August 24, 2001, and broadly released for retail sale on October 25, 2001.
@JourneymanGeek technically '01. Little under four months younger than me.

11:45 AM
@djsmiley2k well 2k and ME, XP then Vista
XP derived from 2k

that is lol.

Sam
1:53 PM
Hey guys, do you know how someone could hide their server IP secure and with as less resources as possibel?
possible**
e.g. someone types in stankmemes.com > it gets translated to VPN address > vpn forwards to my server IP
and my question is, is a vpn enough to do that? or is a proxy also good? or do i need both?

@Sam you're looking at it wrong

Sam
Okay, go o
on

You shouldn't really be using a VPN for that - and honestly that's the worst sort of cargo cult security by obscurity

wanna hide your server? cloudflare.

You protect a server with sensible firewall rules
You stick it behind something like cloudflare for stuff like ddoses
You secure your ssh server by blocking root logins and using key based auth
And all these things are resource cheap

2:09 PM
@bwDraco a real job
go go go.
Seriously.
go.

he won't

Sam
no i mean i want to hide the ip of the server so they cant trace the location

you need TOR

lol good luck with that
'hiding' a server is nigh on impossible
because it has to be accessible
it's impossible, because you have knee caps, and want to keep them

Sam
knee caps?

2:12 PM
!!xkcd 538

what possible use case have you got for obfusticating the IP?

Sam
and im not planning on using ssh at all
the same as wikileaks
only they are at bit wealthy lets say, they host in a nuclear bunker
so im hosting at home

that went so well for assange.

Sam
sadly

So you've just given up the physical location of your server, on a public chatroom
well done. you've already lost the game.
knee caps.

Sam
2:14 PM
oh that way okay
where do you see my IP address then?

I don't want, nor need to see your IP address

Sam
stack overflow doesnt store it does it?

probably

Sam
now you got me acting paranoid damn

I'm always amazed this works

Sam
2:15 PM
na but its ok i left my vpn on

tim@musha ~ $ tail -f /var/log/apache2/access_log

Thanks for playing.

they run Windows stack. IIS logs all access requests with the requesting IP

If I wanted to be really evil? I'd invite you to a room on your own, then link it.

Sam
yeah the ol' grabify trick.

grabify?

Sam
2:17 PM
or is that not what you ment
meant

i just used the fact that the chat, by auto, displays hotlinked images.
and I run that web server

move your server to TOR

so when everyones clients hungrily grabs the image from the server, I see y'all.

Sam
oh okay thats kinda weird

Not really
Infomation security is hard.

Sam
2:18 PM
yes not weird i mean mean
mean mean haha 2 times in a row who wouldve thought
but anyway how to obfuscate an IP address?

TOR!!!!
Tor is free and open-source software for enabling anonymous communication. The name is derived from an acronym for the original software project name "The Onion Router". Tor directs Internet traffic through a free, worldwide, volunteer overlay network consisting of more than seven thousand relays to conceal a user's location and usage from anyone conducting network surveillance or traffic analysis. Using Tor makes it more difficult to trace Internet activity to the user: this includes "visits to Web sites, online posts, instant messages, and other communication forms". Tor's intended use is to...

Sam
yeah but only 0.1% of all people use tor or something
i cant access a .onion domain with chrome

@Sam on a server? You don't

Sam
dont what

Hide your ip

Sam
2:22 PM
@JourneymanGeek what about tor?

It's like saying 'i want mail but I don't want anyone to have my address'
@Sam Tor is a privacy tool
Not a great way to actually do stuff in a performant way

Sam
i dont really care about performance
i care about not being tracable

@Sam Don't run a server then.

Sam
aargghghggh
my only option is cyberbunker then but thats too expensive

Cause literally people need to find you

Sam
2:26 PM
im a student not a mothertrucking CEO

Language!
@Sam what's wrong with cloudflare?

Sam
theyre too expensive

What's your threat model?

Sam
literally i have 0 dollars

They have a free tier

Sam
2:27 PM
(as budget)

Aws has a free tier
VPNs cost money

Sam
thread model as i really dont like the FSB to come to my house and bust my kneecaps
threat**
and i want as little third party as possibe
possible

Ok... So... You might want to get familiar with the work of michens

Sam
michens...................?>

Basically as an individual there's precious little you can do against a determined state actor
Doubly so with no budget
Triply so with no third party stuff
Cause all the evidence is where you live

2:32 PM
@Sam the federation of small businesses?

Sam
okay so lets say i do want cloudfare
flare
jesus christ my fat fingers

KGB mark II
Russian internal security

oh russian secret service?

Sam
FSB - federalnaja sloezjba bezopasnosti

Sam
2:34 PM
NSA/CIA in russia.

not much you can do to defend against a Wrench 1.0

Sam
so lets say i have a little money to spend, would it be a good idea to use a vpn with port forwarding?

Sam
why?

Better to spend the money on cheap trustworthy hosting outside russia

Sam
2:35 PM
yes but russia has a lot of money and a lot of power.

The VPN is unlikely to give you a public ip

Sam
they just say "cyka i want that server down" and it goes down

you could try not doing anything that pisses off the russian government

And here is the thing. If they want to get you, you're still a client of the VPN provider

Sam
@Burgi it doesnt nessicarily but it can and could

2:37 PM
They can do it to your VPN provider too

Sam
okay ill explain
the main reason why i want my server at home is to configure it directly without ssh. i hate ssh. I also hate ftp.
i just want to walk to my server, say "good morning server" and eat my oatmeal

Sam
"oh looks like i got to change /somefolder/index.php oh look i can just turn on my screen and type!

I can't imagine running a server without remote access

Sam
that kind of shizzle ykwim

2:40 PM
@Sam i think you want a tree, not a server ;)

So let's forget the stuff about the fsb
Practically lots of folks host at home
You just need an isp chill with it
And no ssh is fine
And... Dang. I'm not sure if cloudflare masks your ip
But it might

Hmm
When someone attempts to look up who hosts your domain, DNS will return an IP address in the CloudFlare network.
That sounds like it hides your ip

It does hide your IP. Requests coming in will get forwarded on, so they act like a large router that also supports caching
However, you can also use the DNS features to allow "direct" connections to your server(s). I do that just so I have SSH without having to memorize the IP addresses

Sam
kk, thanks guys
Ill speak to you in a month or so and say if i still have my kneekaps
2
caps
:D

2:55 PM
@Sam looks like you should be hosting over TOR

@rahuldottech welcome to 4 hours ago

Bob
@JourneymanGeek it does
you can't have ddos protection if your upstream ip address is exposed
they'd just ddos the upstream
...I should've read a few more messages down lol
'course it only "hides" your ip from the general public
gov asks cf? they'll tell em

3:21 PM
And you've already revealed far too much infomation in a public space, to be safe.
So stop what you're thinking, and do sane things instead.
If you doubt that - go read about how they caught dread pirate roberts

@djsmiley2k didn't he get stoned in a starbucks and blab everything to an FBI agent?

@Burgi nah
he asked on a few public forums about setting up things prior to that
and used various names which linked back to who he was

3:42 PM
@Sam anyone can access it from tor2web
@djsmiley2k yeh, this:
Oct 22 '18 at 21:50, by rahuldottech
Fun fact! Apparently, this is the Stack Overflow account of the dude who used to run The Silk Road over TOR

4:32 PM
> There were 1240 failed login attempts since the last successful login.
that's not good

5:11 PM
lol nope
get fail2ban
or whatever version of that exists for the thing.

lol

3 hours later…
8:05 PM
Oh hey it's Prime Day
2
A C920 for 25 quid
That's not bad

Stap!

I kinda wish there were more options for USB PD power banks that could output 45W or more and weren't outrageously priced.
(my laptop needs 45W to charge at a reasonable speed, and ideally 60W or more)
Already have a 30W USB-C/19.5W PowerIQ/QC2.0 combination charger but wanted something smaller that I could just keep in my bag so I don't have to pack the former charger every time I leave the house. Only needed one high-output USB-C port, and faster charging is a boon when I'm in a hurry in the field.

128GB of microSD for 15 quid
That's disgusting
Disgustingly cheap

Odd. I have one of these and it charges both Stolas and Furcas without any trouble.

(Though flash prices have been stupidly cheap of late)

Yup. If you want an SSD, get one now before prices shoot up due to the WD/Toshiba fab power failure.
As for me... I have too many SSDs right now ._.

I'm still in Oban
Will need to review these tomorrow

8:28 PM
Mostly older ones, put in high-performance USB 3.1 Gen 2 enclosures. One is an old 64 GB Plextor M5M, the other is a 500 GB Samsung SSD 850 EVO.
Also have a 512 GB Samsung SSD 850 PRO (also in a USB 3.1 Gen 2 enclosure) being used mainly for expansion and write offloading on my main laptop Stolas.
Anyhoo, got more SSDs than I actually have a use for.
