Websites that ask if they can display notifications... Yay or Nay?!

hmm
kinda nay

I don't think there's been a single website that has asked, and I've thought "Yea, alright!"

what's worse is ones that try to force you to install their mobile app

12:48 AM
"This forum uses Tapatalk!"
Just let me see the threeeeeead!

lol yup
or quora
amusingly though, I use SE app mainly... for notifications

Bob
@MichaelFrank depends. ask once and remember refusal? cool. ask every time? go away. make the browser prompt for permission every time (which steals focus)? gtfo

Oh yea, if it's a custom pop up, that's fine. I don't mind clicking it away.
If it's the actual browser settings though... Quit trying to hijack my browser!

oh
facebook once managed to get itself to have notiofications on my phone....
web notifications
oddly I use the app

Strange..
Ha! I ordered a Google Chromecast from Google directly as there wasn't any in stock nearby that was any cheaper.
Inbox has a button that lets you track orders from emails they detect a tracking number in.
I tried to track my package from Google and they can't find it.
The order confirmation email even has a tracking link it in, that still doesn't work.

1:01 AM
"a google chrome"
whut?

1:23 AM
ugh
I think I am having routing issues 0_0
could someone see if journeymangeek.com works for them please?

"WARNING! DOMAIN SEIZED BY FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATIONS!"

It works

ya, kinda oddly it stops somewhere in ... I think italy?

taking a bit of a holiday probably.

1:37 AM
lemme try rebooting
@Bob ._.
> [FAILED] Failed to start Mount ZFS filesystems.
is that bad?

Is it supposed to fail?

i donno
I'm connected in over the console and am still seeing some pretty bad stuff on the network
hm
some SE stuff isn't loading either
ugh
Lots of stuff is oddly broken. I just got logged off chat on my PC.... And the login doth not work
or just restart my router...

Bob
2:22 AM
@JourneymanGeek erm...
systemd message?

it went away on reboot
yup

Bob
o.O

not to try to get ipv6 working again

@JourneymanGeek Appears to be down.

@bwDraco oh now it is

Hi Everyone. I'm not sure how to proceed here... I received an encrypted message from something called OME encryption. It looks like some Microsoft encrypted email program. I can't find a viewer for it. Does anyone know anything about it? Where can I find an OME encrypted email viewer? (0 hits on GitHub).

@jww do you know who the sender is? (look at the mail headers)
make sure you know the person before you bother

jww
Thanks @allquixotic. The message is from the State of Maryland in response to a question I asked of them last week. Regarding the page you referenced, I saw that too. But I cannot find the desktop viewer. Do you know if OME email encryption an open standard? Do you know if it has an associated viewer?

3:02 AM
Obvious training module answers are obvious... The options boil down to:

* Do the Thing
* Don't do the Thing

it looks like it should just open up as a webpage?

Guess which option is normally correct?!

> To view encrypted messages, recipients can either get a one-time passcode, sign in with a Microsoft account, or sign in with a work or school account associated with Office 365. Recipients can also send encrypted replies. They don’t need an Office 365 subscription to view encrypted messages or send encrypted replies.

3:23 AM
@jww I'm 99% sure it's not an open standard
> Office 365 Message Encryption is an online service that’s built on Microsoft Azure Rights Management (Azure RMS) which is part of Azure Information Protection. Office 365 administrators can define mail flow rules to determine the conditions for encryption. For example, a rule can require the encryption of all messages addressed to a specific recipient.

When someone sends an email message in Exchange Online that matches an encryption mail flow rule, the message is encrypted before it's sent. All Office 365 end-users that use Outlook clients to read mail receive native, first-class reading
it sounds like the message itself should contain some kind of (unencrypted) link to go view the message on some Exchange website
out of curiosity which Maryland office is sending you this stupid Microsoft encrypted email? I might email them complaining as I'm a fellow Marylander
of course I won't be able to read their response, but oh well

Reminds me of when a non-English-speaker says "No speeka English!" and you speak more English at them; or you say "నేను తెలుగు మాట్లాడను" and they're like "సర్, మీరు వెళ్లనివ్వకుంటే, నేను పోలీసులకు కాల్ చేస్తాను" and you're like "THAT DOESN'T HELP"

@allquixotic - There's some friction between myself and the Attorney General's Office. For the big data breaches, like Anthem and Equifax, AG Brian Frosh is not acquiring a list of breached SSN's and then providing them to the Comptroller's Office. Instead, Maryland pays out millions in SIRF fraud (https://www.justice.gov/tax/stolen-identity-refund-fraud) and pushes it onto the citizens rather than recovering the money from the companies.

The message is from the Comptrollers Office. It is a reply to my inquiry confirming AG Frosh did not obtain the SSN's and failed to ensure the breached S

@JourneymanGeek Hi. May I suggest that you be more mindful of spelling, grammar and style in blog posts? I think that's important.

@FleetCommand shrug I spellcheck and its mostly personal documentation ;p
maybe if I ever move over to jakyll I'll let folks do PRs

user226528
I know. But the person who reads it considers it a blog regardless.

A blog isn't professional writing ._.

user226528
Also, PR as in proofreading is not evil. PR as in press release... has an undeserved evil reputation.

I'm not selling stuff, and the only reason I asked if it was running is cause its hosted on the same server as the resource I actually was having trouble with
Pull request ;p

user226528
3:46 AM
Alright. Good luck.

for example, the most recent post is there in case I need to redo my relay ;p

user226528
I finally installed the update to rule them all.

user226528
Overnight.

(also, I probably should wipe my other server, and test out nginix units on it for the future)

TIL I'm in the developing world

Lol
So datally?

@JourneymanGeek Wave was (and is was) a standard (a reference implementation?)

Now the Apache Foundation have retired it as well

RCS is a standard made by the GSM standards body

Aye, fair enough
Not sure why it needs Yet Another Google App (Coming soon, Google Yaga?) similar-but-slightly-different (and incompatible-with) the other 10 :P

user226528
I remember when I was a kid, Apache foundation's only project was their HTTP server. It was called "a patchy server" too. When did it start pumping our all these other projects?

5:50 AM
Unless it's to be deliberately, obtusely different from Apple
Who (AFAICT from the outside of their ecosystem) seem to roll protocol/functionality updates into apps (iMessage?)
I mean, I can't see Apple having 11 (and counting) apps that all do some slightly different, overlapping subset of text/audio/video communication
> The Wave project retired on 2018-01-15
:(

user226528
I guess they'd rather move on to MediaWiki instead.

sigh
my ttrss filter broke, and I THINK I probably need help to grok out unbreaking it for FF
guess not

Hi :

Mornin

user226528
You know, if you ask Google Translate to translate "The beauty and the monster" instead of "the beauty and the beast", it gives a different translation for "the beauty".

user226528
Basically, cross-questioning Google Translate gives you an idea as to how accurate its translation is.

user226528
Remember the rumor of discovery a coded Latin message that said NSA was responsible for shutting down TrueCrypt? Well, when I asked Google Translate to translate it, I replaced NSA with CIA.

user226528
7:26 AM
It made me realize the original translation about NSA was human-fed nonsense.

Language is hard.

I do love how users love to join the community, immediately tell us we are doing it wrong.

we are?

@djsmiley2k 0_0

@djsmiley2k there's a lot of that going around

it's just amusing
it always happens I'm sure

I've had people go that the SO model is "bad" cause we remove "thank you"
(also most people forget other sites exist.)

welp my startmenu has broken

yey

and its nuked all my pinned stuff

user226528
9:43 AM
@Burgi Looks like misfortune with Windows doesn't leave you alone. Didn't nuke your whole Windows installation once?

this is my work PC

@Burgi try rebooting? Sounds silly but mine did that the other week
I rebooted, and it went back to 'normal'

i rebooted and discovered it had deleted my pinned start items

10:01 AM
yeah
I had a patch or something, rebooted, everything had gone awol
rebooted again about 20 minutes later, after wondering wtf had happened, everything came back

user226528
10:22 AM
Hey, guys. Does anyone here have a copy of Office Professional Plus 2016 installed?

user226528
I need to check something.

hi!
is this the correct chat for hardware questions?

user226528
Ask the question; we'll tell you.

I want to buy a new CPU, and I like the i7 8700K, but someone told me to wait until 9th gen

user226528
And you are looking for that someone here? Well, a user name or a general description of his or her avatar helps.

10:28 AM
no, I'm not looking for anyone
I just wanted to know your opinions xD

user226528
Well, I am yet to see someone who DOES NOT think if he had waited a bit, he'd have gotten a better CPU.
2

user226528
The fact is better CPUs always come so fast that you always feel if you had waited, you'd have had a better CPU.

user226528
I myself don't have so much time on my hand to wait. If I need a computer, I'd even buy a 7th gen. In one case, I did buy a top of the line 3rd gen.

the question is, is there anything bad about the 8700k?
because, if like bulldozer, then it's worth waiting, but if it's already good.... then it doesn't really matter beyonfd that

Bob
@FleetCommand The trick is to time it for just after a large generational leap. Or time it for just after a smaller revision if you prefer a more polished platform.
At least that's how it went in the tick-tock days.
Now it's more like tick-tick-tick(?)-tick(??)-tock(just kidding, it's a tick)

10:36 AM
@djsmiley2k the architecture bug
which is supposed to be fixed in 9th gen

user226528
You mean Spectre and Meltdown?

yes

haha

didn't remember the names :P

I expect many more where that came from

user226528
10:37 AM
I don't.

@Bob boom?

user226528
Life is too short to wait for CPUs.

@FleetCommand You think that Intel's firmware is totally secure?
oh, you misunderstand
I expect more firmware and microcode bugs

user226528
No, I don't.

user226528
But I am already using a despicable operating system called Windows 10.

10:38 AM
@FleetCommand this is the truth

also, spectrum and meltdown software fixes are not supposed to affect the performance in gaming, are they?
or it's what I heard

Bob
@Neoares Generally not.

then fuck it

Bob
The mitigations primarily affect branch prediction while context switching.

I'll probably go with the 8th gen
oh

Bob
10:41 AM
Which means the heaviest impact is for software that does lots of calls into the kernel.
Usually this means lots of I/O

like...?

user226528
@Neoares Nice choice. You'll regret it. ;) It is still better than having waited AND regretting it.

Bob
Games don't have that much I/O. It's mostly arithmetic.

I don't usually regret, I think 8700K is an awesome CPU

Bob
Though I do recall hearing DX12 is slightly more impacted than DX11 because there's a lot more calls to the GPU.

10:42 AM
I only regret not having sold all my ethereum a couple of months ago

Bob
OTOH most of the time is spent on the GPU itself soooo
@Neoares Databases, mostly. And some synthetic benchmarks.

oh, nice
you're a smart Fennekin

user226528
AFK

@FleetCommand heh. I was happy with mine :p

11:52 AM
actually, I couldn't afford one... so yeah

12:12 PM
/me wibbles

"Browser" process constantly fluctuating between 17%-28%

Whyy?

something somewhere, is running

user226528
Either it is in marshaling state or is downloading an update.

chrome has a built in task manager that'll break stuff down per tab
have a look

With all plugins disabled it goes down 10% but still strays at 15%-17%

user226528
12:16 PM
In my case, I am seeing a fluctuation between 4% to 14%.

@djsmiley2k Is it not task manager that is on my screenshot?

user226528
Of course, I didn't disable any plugin

@FleetCommand Dual core or quad core or hexa core CPU do you have there?

oh yah it is @Boris_yo

user226528
It is an old-generation Intel Core 2 Duo.

12:17 PM
didn't realise
meh, mine spikes to 34% playing youtube.

Where is Psychogeek anyway? Root Access user that is known for being ace in DIY?

user226528
Sorry. Scratch my last. It is a legacy Intel Core 2 Quad, Q6600.

user226528
@Boris_yo How about you?

@FleetCommand i5 2.6GHz dual core.

user226528
What generation?

user226528
Oh, it's 2nd generation! That's my favorite generation! I just love the word "Sandy Bridge".

@FleetCommand How many generations are there?

user226528
Currently, 8.

user226528
Also, the 2nd generation was the first time I bought a computers that when people saw, they told me, "Wow! That's a beast!" even though it was a mid-level Core i5.

this is my life

user226528
12:29 PM
@Burgi Minus the "are you still here?" part, right?

i say that bit in my head

@Burgi Not the other way around?
So you are not the boss...

sadly not

user226528
@Burgi The part that I see in my imagination is me kicking my boss in the stomach grabbing his head and shouting "Face, meet wall! Wall, this is face!"

isn't your dad your boss?

user226528
12:34 PM
No.

user226528
My father retired.

user226528
Anyway, he was CEO. There were too many people between him and me. And he wouldn't have endangered his own position and reputation by favoritism.

user226528
(In the films, it is quite the reverse. The CEO is a disreputable condescending pain in the *** who would fire employees on regular basis, without the risk of getting a board review or running out of employees to harass.)

user226528
Look what you did, @Burgi! You got me started on this sore topic and I am rambling again. Worst of all, I desire to continue, even though I know I mustn't.

12:39 PM
:)

Welp once again our failure of a firewall is causing us issues
and hearing people argue for it, just makes me question wtf they actually know too lol

@allquixotic Yes!

indeed.

1:23 PM
Am I the only one working somewhere, where my boss has enough work to do without babysitting me?

does anyone know how i can convert a dd image to something a little more useful like a vdi or vmdk? all the instructions i've found refer to linux commands that i don't have on windows...

user226528
1:38 PM
@Burgi Rename your dd image to have an .img filename extension. You should be able to open it using IsoBuster.

user226528
... or any other app that supports .img.

@Burgi iirc qemu-img should have a Windows port.

hmm...
any ideas on how to trim out the freespace so i don't kill my machine with a 30GB file?

user226528
Well, if you go by my suggestion, after you mounted the image, you can use a .vhd-producing app that does not save free spaces.

user226528
Actually, you'd have trouble finding one that does the opposite, so you are good.

user226528
1:49 PM
The technical term is "dynamically expanding VHD".

user226528
Same goes for VDI and VMDK.

user226528
I'd help you more if I weren't in the middle of creating a deployment image.

2:07 PM
isobuster is a paid for product
and qemu-img doesn't work
> qemu-img.exe : The term 'qemu-img.exe' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet, function, script file, or operable
program. Check the spelling of the name, or if a path was included, verify that the path is correct and try again.
At line:1 char:1
oh wait, made a typo
all done
just zipping it, then i can kill the server

Bob
@allquixotic yup, I saw - but only the base model :(
hm actually
I could go for a SP-64-S
:O

@Burgi empty space is almost infiniately compressiable btw

Bob
@allquixotic hm. what I should do is cancel my US server. decisions, decisions... :P

Outlawing of SDR in .... not very long I think

@Bob how much is your US server per year?

Bob
@allquixotic 122 USD per month

@XKCD this one is for bwDraco...

> Stephen Lawrence Day to be held annually
ehrmn

today is world book day?

it is?
I thought it was..... in the late summer
/me tries to remember

no world book day was in october

y eah, bevcause my daughter already did it in nursery :O

its St George's Day

3:39 PM
^^ I'm with @Burgi
today?

yes

or 22nd april?

23rd

World Book Day or World Book and Copyright Day (also known as International Day of the Book or World Book Days) is a yearly event on April 23rd, organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), to promote reading, publishing and copyright. In the United Kingdom, the day is recognized on the first Thursday in March. World Book Day was celebrated for the first time on 23 April 1995. == Date selection == The connection between 23 April and books was first made in 1923 by booksellers in Catalonia, Catalonia The original idea was of the Valencian writer Vicente...

So they've put Stephen Lawrence day on the day before? :D

3:40 PM
who is George?

Saint George

Some guy, fought something thatdidn't exist.
Won.

a Syrian guy who killed a dragon

must be winn0r

snapdragon I am sure

3:44 PM
@Burgi orly>? amaz
love the intro
the editing ain't bad either.
We need more bank holidays :(

FFXV leaks insane amounts of memory and eventually crashes when it runs out. It's committed 27 GB (!!!) of RAM so far. A loading screen fixes it, but lots of fights in the same place (e.g. using the Beast Whistle to repeatedly summon daemons at night) seems to be particularly problematic.
Hmm... reloading doesn't seem to be enough.

4:05 PM
@bwDraco how long has the game process been running?

Less than half an hour, if even that.

too bad you can't take a debugger to it or a memory dump that would tell you which module (dll/exe) "owns" each region of memory in the mapped sections of the virtual address space
my guess? the coders of FFXV aren't dumb enough to forget to free textures/meshes/effects from fights, but it's something like:
FFXV: Hey Nvidia, clean up all these resources when I tell you, ok?
Nvidia: K :)
FFXV: Now!
Nvidia: klol
FFXV: You freed them, right?
Nvidia: Yup
Windows: LIAR
or maybe

Um, driver bug?

FFXV: Hey Nvidia, clean up all these resources when I tell you, ok?
Nvidia: K :)
FFXV: Now!
Nvidia: klol
Nvidia: Hey Windows, clean up all this stuff, ok?
Windows: Suuuuuure
FFXV: You freed them, right?
Nvidia: That's what Windows said
Windows: ^_^
2

lol

4:10 PM
or maybe this is the dialogue between FFXV and Nvidia driver

The game gradually frees up physical memory but the committed memory remains very high.

user226528
4:26 PM
@Burgi IsoBuster is freemium. That means some of its features are available whether your pay or not.

ah their website looked like it was a fully paid product
well i got what i needed to do done now
thanks for your suggests :)

!!caaaaat

user226528
BTW, SmugMug is acquiring Flickr.

user226528
Glad to see your problem sorted out anyway.

user226528
4:29 PM
The funny thing is, I am no longer an official Flickr member since they prevented me from logging in with anything other than a Yahoo account.

user226528
That's a few years ago.

user226528
But now, they sent me their newsletter.

i stopped using flickjr after they stopped offering unlimited storage

user226528
That's around the same time as they prevented non-Yahoo logins.

user226528
You know, it was a re-org.

user226528
4:35 PM
Wait. Did they offer 1 TB storage at the time?

user226528
O.o

user226528
You won't believe what just happened: An Apple web app called Numbers crashed!

user226528
I didn't know web apps can crash!

user226528
It even showed a me Windows XP-esque "Send now/Send later" dialog box.

All apps can crash. As can the computers they run on.

user226528
4:41 PM
Yeah! But each crash needs a crash handler, which is almost always the OS.

user226528
In this case, I saw a web app that crashed and its crash handler was ... itself. Or, another web app hosted on the same domain.

What, you think web apps don't run in something like, er... a browser? JVM? Magic?
Plenty of non-web apps are their own crash handler...

user226528
Well, the crash handler was sure as hell not the web browser or JVM.

user226528
@FMLCat That's not called a crash anymore. It is called a handled exception.

user226528
They have exception handlers.

4:43 PM
@FleetCommand Apple's "web apps" on iCloud.com might be run through some wonky desktop to web translation layer, which are becoming practical nowadays

No, they have crash handlers, including applications to collect and submit crash dumps.

user226528
@allquixotic Thanks! The quality of discussion suddenly improved when you chimed.

Urgh, now I remember why I should have blocked him years ago... but he had such a cool avatar :-(

user226528
Anyway, if you were talking about apps like Chrome, Firefox or so many Microsoft apps, the crash reporter is not the crash handler. It just reports the crash.

4:56 PM
@FleetCommand basically you encountered Apple's equivalent of an HTTP/500 error

@allquixotic YO CAT, i HERD YOU LIKE BROWSERS, SO I PUT A BROWSER IN YOUR BROWSER SO YOU CAN BROWSE WHILE YOU BROWSE.
5

that's SE's version, so you encountered that but Apple
your tab didn't die; you didn't get an Oh Snap or FF equivalent; your browser didn't crash; your OS didn't BSOD
@djsmiley2k starred just because of the play on that meme of "yo cat"

oy dwag.

user226528
Oh, here comes JokerDino. Someone must have flagged something.
