It's settled down at about 37 dBA.
The main motivation for getting an SPL meter is having an actual number to compare against. I see reviews giving noise levels in dBA and wanted to have something that's accurate enough to let me make meaningful comparisons.

Well... no wonder this old laptop was so annoying while gaming, sometimes keeping me up at night. It measured 53 dBA at typical working distance with the fans on full speed.
Jan 5 '17 at 3:49, by bwDraco
I'm kinda used to 50+ dBA noise from my laptop under maximum load...

Bob
12:54 AM
morn
@bwDraco I'd guess it's the gaming that's keeping you up at night, not the noise caused by it :P

@Bob No, the noise.
It's not an issue if I'm far from it (my old studio setup had the laptop on the opposite side of the room) but this new bedroom won't allow it.

Bob

@FMLCat it dropped off HNQ a bit ago, so unlikely :\

4:01 AM
I have seen a few logs from dmesg in Debian. The following one is logged 5 times:
[ 94.264417] [UFW BLOCK] IN= MY LTE DEVICE INTERFACE OUT= MAC= THIS MUCH IS MY LTE DEVICE'S MAC : I DON'T KNOW WHAT THIS IS SRC=185.22.172.239 DST= THIS IS MY LAN IP LEN=595 TOS=0x08 PREC=0x20 TTL=48 ID=14582 DF PROTO=TCP SPT=443 DPT=34368 WINDOW=558 RES=0x00 ACK PSH URGP=0
this is after a freeze.

@RogUE oh, you know, just the usual bots trying to probe you to see if they can hack you or figure out who you are
happens all the time
soooo many botnets out there whose goal is to understand what's running on every host on the internet. What OS, what patches, who are you, what's your up/down bandwidth, how snippy is your firewall, etc.
silently dropping all inbound packets is a good idea

does it has anything to do with the freeze?
and these strange lines were there too:
[ 27.533518] Bluetooth: Core ver 2.22
[ 27.533540] NET: Registered protocol family 31
[ 27.533541] Bluetooth: HCI device and connection manager initialized
[ 27.533544] Bluetooth: HCI socket layer initialized
[ 27.533546] Bluetooth: L2CAP socket layer initialized
[ 27.533552] Bluetooth: SCO socket layer initialized
[ 27.566776] Netfilter messages via NETLINK v0.30.
[ 27.594894] device **MY LTE DEVICE INTERFACE** entered promiscuous mode

what "freeze" are you talking about?
you mean a suspend to RAM/standby?

Debian just froze when I tried to open music player
nothing works, just like a still photograph, or a screenshot.

the BT bit is from 27 seconds after you booted up, which is very soon after init - probably just autoprobing and detecting your bluetooth chipset

4:07 AM
my boot-up was several minutes before

no, I mean "[ 27.533518]" means that those messages were printed 27 seconds after the kernel initialized itself
that has nothing to do with however long it takes you to get to the desktop

I think that is because after the freeze, around 2min later, I was presented with a log-in screen.
And I do not have a BT device connected to my PC.

most common WiFi cards these days also have a Bluetooth chipset, whether you know it or not
and those messages about initing Bluetooth will be printed regardless of whether you're using it or not

The wifi dongle is not attached.

that firewall block was probably just normal background bot traffic attempting to scan your PC and the other dmesg messages looked harmless; the actual cause of the freeze is more likely to do with a performance issue (slow HDD), bad graphics driver, etc.
@RogUE hmm... I think it actually loads the Bluetooth core module on bootup even if you don't have Bluetooth hardware, and as part of the "probing" routines where it tries to figure out whether you have Bluetooth hardware, it prints those messages. again, no big deal

4:13 AM
@allquixotic Or is it because of the log-in?
The log says the destination as my local IP, how can the bots see my local IP?

Bob
5:26 AM
@allquixotic ewwwwwwwwwwww :P

@allquixotic pretty normal

5:46 AM
@FMLCat If that is the case and I the firewall is working as expected, all is well.

When the instructions are wrong, and you know they are wrong, but you follow orders cause that’s what the instructions say... 😐
> 1. Backup the folder contained in C:\pos\01 called DB
> 2. Restore the 0x folder you backed up into C:\pos on the new computer
What’s wrong with these instructions... HMMMMM? I wonder!

8:22 AM
@MichaelFrank 0x, as in swap $x for value of computer ?
oh, you only backed up the db folder? maybe that's all that matters?

@MichaelFrank Pentium M or core. Centreno was basically Intel processor chipset and wifi as a platform

user226528
9:20 AM
Who am I kidding. None of you would be interested.

user226528
AFK.

@djsmiley2k Nope! Turns out you needed to backup the 01 folder, instead of just the DB folder like the instructions specified.
@JourneymanGeek Oh, Pentium M.

oi. Good processor in its time.

DenizCIf someone in rural Australia can't handle the occasional F word maybe they're not a good fit or they are trying to change the culture of an entire nation. he started a new job at a huge company in based in london

I'm like.... so?

lol
"Hey, this is cargo area A. It smells strongly of chicken poop in the morning"
..... he wasn't lying. Just didn't make it clear what the magnitude of the stench was.

lol
Is chicken Poop like Pig Poop? really distinctive?
iirc chicken poo isn't a nice smell, where pig is vaguely pleasent

When someone mentioned devgru today, I thought he's talking about a software development guru.

user226528
So, a little heads up: It is not.

user226528
Also, another heads up: I've spent hours alone creating deployment images. I am susceptible to rambling.

Why is someone asking me about changes I made 3 weeks ago

user226528
Because they wanted to ask you for 3 weeks and couldn't get a hold of you?

@djsmiley2k I had to ask security for directions...
I think they thought I was dying.

user226528
10:40 AM
Why? Did they call an ambulance or something?

user226528
Or a priest?

naw, just facial expressions.
Was quite a stench, and got me into a coughing fit

user226528
Stench is the worst.

user226528
By the way, what's Spyfall?

Google says... A boardgame!

user226528
10:49 AM
Apparently, StackExchange has weekly spyfall games in a chat room.

oh man I love developers
'The access I didn't request, isn't open!'
well, lets play eh?
@MichaelFrank google told me to go to this site and start a game

@djsmiley2k BUT WE NEED ALL THE ACCESSES!!!!!

11:04 AM
@djsmiley2k I love users. "Why is this not working?" the proper answer "Just read the E-Mail I send last week and you will know".

user226528
I wonder where I can lookup error numbers like 0x80070002.

@FleetCommand so what is devgru? According to Wikipedia it might be Seal Team Six?

user226528
@Seth Yeah. That's what I discovered. They weren't talking about computing at all.

user226528
DEVGRU is the Navy counterpart of Delta Force.

Interesting to know but yeha, I'd have been confused as well. :D

Immediately after 10AM Pacific on December 30th, the Steam key will magically vanish as if it were just a figment of your imagination, leaving this cryptic message behind in its wake.
Welp... I guess I forgot about that key. D:

user226528
Is it really what's written? Or did you make it up just now, as a translation or something?

Nope, that's straight from the purchase page on Humble Bundle.

user226528
Ah.

user226528
Humble Bundle. Makes sense.

11:24 AM
One of the free keys?

No, I'm sure I purchased it...

hmmm

Ahh, no it was a free key.
or at least, there is no price tag beside it's line on my purchases page.

user226528
Speaking of Humble Bundle, I've heard there is going to be a Shadow of Mordor goatie!!! Not sure what that means.

On another bundle page I had a case where I actually purchased keys and they had a nice reminder that you should use those keys by XX because it would become rather difficult after that date.
Goatie or GOTY as in Game of the Year edition?

user226528
11:28 AM
Ah!

user226528
That makes sense.

Yea, I recently went through all my keys and redeemed everything I hadn't.

user226528
LOL. Yeah, I guess GOTY is pronounced goatie!

user226528
They should pronounce it [GAH-TI]

user226528
Then again I think "goatie" would remind them of "goatee".

11:35 AM
I got quite a few keys I can't redeem because I already own those games. :(

user226528
Good for you. Enjoy them.

wtf... one of the guys at our IT company has sent me a really snarky angry email

11:44 AM
(needs more though)

@Burgi send it back

i've forwarded it on to his boss complaining that it is unprofessional

@Burgi awesome

in feb, they asked me to add two MX records to a domain of ours. which i did.
they neglected to ask me to remove the existing ones
apparently thats my fault

hmmmmmm no
it's perfectly logical to have many

user226528
11:48 AM
You want me to come over there and kick their *****?

Also, you are the client right?

he didn't need to send a snarky email about it

user226528
?

agreed

user226528
I could argue that all snarky emails are unnecessary.

11:48 AM
@FleetCommand can i have an A please Bob? ;)

user226528
So, yeah.

@Burgi Heh... See my earlier rant about unclear instructions.

he could have phoned me saying "hey thanks for updating those could you delete the old ones too?"
me > sure no probs dude
instead, he has irritated me by being snarky
i can only guess that his bonus is linked to this somehow... shrug

user226528
The following updates cannot be integrated into a Windows 8.1 image with DISM. While these updates are CAB files, they do not have the ordinary structure of a Windows update. Instead they carry .msi files. Ouch.

user226528
11:58 AM
But there you have it. Just FYI.

I still don't get why it's even necessary to constantly update the image yourself. Usually it seems like Microsoft doesn't release any update images. At least each 6 months or something should be doable for them ...

user226528
@Seth They're doing exactly what you said about Windows 10. And exactly in that time window.

user226528
I am preparing to install Windows 8.1 on a lot of slow computers. Installing updates from WSUS would take a lot of time for them, so I prepared images.

user226528
One solution is, of course, to install Windows 8.1 on a fast VM, update, sysprep and deploy.

12:13 PM
since when has belkin owned linksys?

user226528
O.o

user226528
Belkin owns Linksys?

user226528
@Burgi Since 2013. :O

user226528
@Burgi Get this: Between 2003 to 2013, it belonged to Cisco! :O :O :O

i knew that
thats why i bought a linksys product in 2005, because it was a Cisco router

12:22 PM
@FleetCommand they start doing that? That's nice. I always loath those Windows Server "vanilla" images you need to patch for hours or keep constantly up to date yourself.

@FleetCommand Plot Twist

user226528
@Seth You didn't know? Hadn't you ever heard about "Anniversary Update" or "Creators Update"? Well, they are feature packs; like service packs but full images with updates and new features too.

user226528
Also all Windows 10 updates are cumulative. This means you get like four updates for the last month and you are set.

user226528
Well, except those updates are like 1 GB in size.

user226528
Microsoft later introduced delta update packages that only include changes since the last update, but you can still get full updates, if you want.

user226528
12:32 PM
Even delta updates are cumulative. You can no longer get a single update that addresses "a security vulnerability that allows remote code execution if when the user presses F9 and smiles at the same time."

Yes I didn't. I do know about Anniversary/Creators updates. But I didn't know they re-release the images. You're right that if you handle them as SPs from old it would make sense to get new images. On the other hand I'm more interested in updated server images. So like Server 2012 R2 or 2016.

user226528
@Seth There is not gonna be a 2016 R2. Instead, they released a Windows Server 1709. (I guess "Windows Server 2017 September" was too long.) And they are releasing 2019 too. It'll come out in 2018 too.

well that was fun
logged into a windows 10 machine in the contact centre
pretty sure they should be fully upto date
it told me it needed to do a large update, upto 6Gb
is that the one that broke things last august?

user226528
Nah.

user226528
12:41 PM
6 GB isn't one update.

user226528
It is either several updates...

user226528
... or several updates. A feature pack is bigger.

Would it autodownload a roll up and you about it?
eitherway, those machines are controlled via WSUS here, I believe....

user226528
Yeah. It does. Windows 10 is actually famous for doing that.

so why isn't it upto date already o_O

user226528
12:42 PM
You said it: WSUS.

user226528
It depends when and how the latest updates are approved.

user226528
WSUS does exactly that.

user226528
It lets an admin test updates.

user226528
Then approve them from production machines.

Yeah
except.... either it is on WSUS
and should be auto updating
or it isn't.... and should be autoupdating
it shouldn't be just not updating
unless they are releasing the updates (they being the operations team) to the contact centre first...

user226528
12:44 PM
Open a PowerShell window and issue this command:

user226528
(New-Object -ComObject Microsoft.Update.ServiceManager).Services

not on the machine now

user226528
The latest version of XKCD is merely a repetition of one its previous issues that said "someone on the Internet is wrong".

(They're still wrong).

@djsmiley2k i thought you weren't in tech support any more...

12:51 PM
I'm not, I just logged into it to see if my recabling had broken anything

user226528
Well, not knowing about that certain PowerShell command is consistent with no longer being in tech support.

Also I've taken up a new hobby, when ever I'm under desks, I keep any pens I find

lol

So far I'm up to 11 pens

user226528
LOL

user226528
12:52 PM
Do any of them write?

who controls the stationary cupboard?
ugh.... trying to explain to my parents why SDHC cards won't work in their camera

@Burgi I'm trying to think of a sensible comparison, but can't come up with anything
Oh
'DVD's won't play in a CD player'
it fits, but no worky

personally i think it is time to get a new camera

1:12 PM
Why the amazing ToS then Apple?
if you're just selling products.

hey guys
quick one

No
;)

I wonder if
all the snippits in this
given to a different search engine
may.... point to the original thing anyway? XD

how can I create a table of contents in English, if my word is in French...?

@AndyK I think you'd have to make one in french, and translate it.
I don't think word for example, will automatically translate like that.

1:16 PM
@djsmiley2k actually there was only 2 words, des matières, and change it to of contents
voilà

@AndyK google translate or manually do it

Nice :)
Now post it as a question so i can reap all the rep
(joking!)

2:04 PM
Any recommendations on a DSL modem? I'm most likely going to bridge to my own router so fancy wifi capabilities aren't necessary (though I know basically all modems have some form of wifi built in)
TP Link seems good but doesn't seem widely available in the US :|

Ave
buy a switch

Yes.... I need a modem

but he needs a modem

Bob
I think tp-link usually uses trendchip

Ave
2:07 PM
buy an xserve and install pfsense

tbh in the UK most DSL modems come pre-bundled

Bob
they have some broadcom ones though

Yeah I have the option to lease for $10/month or buy for a flat $100 but they can't tell me what model I'll get
from my ISP

Bob
basically, do you want stability or speed?

they are free over here

Bob
2:08 PM
in other words, how's your line to your local exchange?

@Ave, i'm beginning to see why you never have any cash or time....

Bob
from there pick broadcom or trendchip, and from there pick the cheapest modem that has the chipset you want

Ave
My ISP asked me to pay for the router they gave me /shrug
at least it supports 6in4 and vdsl

Stability is probably the bigger concern. Centurylink now has 10mbps internet in my area... fml

i have a zyxel modem/router combo thingy that i have managed to lock out

2:09 PM
Going to get two lines at this point to handle my needs

Ave
@Burgi accurate.
my server's going to be shipped tomorrow morning

Is there notable latency difference in broadcom vs trendchip other than "faster"

Bob
not really, no

Cool

from what i can tell the USA has really poor competition when it comes to ISPs
you guys pay loads for quite low speeds

2:12 PM
Very correct lol. I'm an even more special case living in a rural area but for the most part your options are limited. My options are just limited to a single very slow ISP compared to cities who have one or two less slow providers

@Burgi That's because it's so big... Easier to deploy Gbps fibre in Liechtenstein then in the USA
@SpartanDonut And soon you'll have an additional one: Tesla satellite connection.

Yeah I'm really hoping that solves all my problems
Keeping my eye on that
Will be the first to sign up :D

@SpartanDonut Sign up now! Send Elon an email...
>:-) >:-) >:-)

I'm going to guess and say that won't get me far lol
Now to find a modem I can actually buy...
It's crazy how unavailable they are

@Burgi I had the same thing happening to me with a supplier a few weeks back.
I responded "I'm a nice guy so no harm done, but I expect you to review your internal processes and ensure this nover happens again in the future"
next time this happens, I'm going to find out who his boss is.
I always take it up with the guy first before talking to the boss.
He might have had a bad day, lost an hour because he wasn't expecting what he saw and was actually angry at the moment itself and pressed "send" before going out for a smoke, coming back and reviewing the same email again.

2:22 PM
@Fabby but no-one lives in Liechtenstein

:D True, but the ones who do all have great Internet! :D

lol

It's like the country with the highest crime rate in the world is actually:
Vatican City!

@Fabby i'm not convinced at satellite internet. you are introducing a 2 second delay before you even get your data

Because all the Roman pickpockets go to steal purses there, and there's only 100 priests living there.
@Burgi High-latency high bandwidth.

2:25 PM
Another possibly dumb question

@Burgi For some applications: good enough.

@Fabby not consumer-grade though

@SpartanDonut There are nu dumb questions, only dumb answers.

I currently have a modem from the stone age. Subsequently I have it set to bridge to my router, ASUS RT-AC68U, and then I've configured my router with CenturyLink's settings (so I think my router is acting like the modem).

Although there are lots of unclear; off-topic, ... questions!

2:26 PM
To do this I plug the phone cable into the modem and an ethernet cable into the WAN port on my router
Is there a converter for phone to ethernet without going through a modem?
Then I can just buy the router :|

@SpartanDonut Phone = Analog, Ethernet = Digital.

Yeah I get that

Modem = Modulator / Demodulator = A/D converter

iirc the RJ11 is designned to plug into an RJ45 port

So, no, not possible

2:28 PM
but as pointed out the signal is different

@Burgi I could say something about large holes and small plugs, but for once, I'm going to keep my big mouth shut before I'm banned from this room on my first day >:-) >:-) >:-)

So a modem basically is that device... Got it.

@Fabby meh i think it'd be fine

>:-) >:-) >:-)
Smoke! BRB...
rebooting

For better or worse picking up a D-Link DSL-520B from Walmart might be my best bet here
Broadcom chipset and returnable if it doesn't work

2:50 PM
Urgh! Broadcom!

Will an ADSL2+ modem work on a VDSL line, just at lower speeds?

Bob
@SpartanDonut No.
Wait. Maybe?
O_O
Well, more technically. VDSL is not backwards compatible with ADSL, but some ISPs will support both ADSL and VDSL on the same line.

CenturyLink is telling me my new lines will be VDSL but my current modem (which they have provided years ago) is only ASDL2+
trying to make sure I buy the right modem here... VDSL modems seems a lot more scarce and more expensive than ADSL2+ modems
and since our speed is capped at a tortoise paced 10Mbps I'm trying to decide if a VDSL modem is actually necessary
Might just break down and pay the $100 (x2 for two lines) and get the modems from CenturyLink. This is proving difficult :|

Bob
@SpartanDonut Hard to know whether they mean "they support VDSL but also the older, slower, standards" or "they only support VDSL"

3:07 PM
Yeah
The modems they're recommending are $150-$200+
Sad day

3:21 PM
@Ave you know what a modem does, right?
@Fabby lol no.
@SpartanDonut that's a router, with a WAN PSTN port.
$23?

> No special, one-time access codes are required for in-car delivery as the car is remotely unlocked at the time of delivery and then immediately locked afterwards. Amazon does this through the user's connected-car service that's paired with the Amazon Key app. Currently, compatible 2015 or newer Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac vehicles with active OnStar accounts, plus 2015 or newer Volvo vehicles with active Volvo On Call accounts can receive in-car deliveries.

It's there when I have my wifi adapter connected to pc.

@djsmiley2k it's got a DSL / Phone port too. That's the one they most recommend and it's available on Amazon Prime. For better or worse it's the one I'm going with and mid price range of all they recommend
I wish I had cable near me lol. So many more choices
I hesitate to branch out of amazon prime or a local place due to the differences I've seen in other sellers / online retailers around customer service and returns
