@Bob Because holiday weekend?

Finding Wally in Google Maps anyone?

Can an American please explain to me what is going on here?

@jokerdino lol

Okay, wait
Understood

I need to get my laptop repaired, but the closest Micro Center is in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, a region with exceptionally high crime.
So, any ideas on a local repair for a Lenovo laptop under warranty?
(or more accurately, Greenwood, but that's still too close for comfort)
It's located just outside the area where the highest crime rates are, but I'm not too willing to take a subway route that passes through one of the worst parts of Brooklyn.

11:13 AM

hmm
when you click on it it has the right date

Huh, this is really cool. Chat blocks SVG images from running JS. If it didn't, it would show today's date

oh
that might be (semi?) intentional

SVG images can contain embedded JS? wtf

@ToxicFrog Yes, they can
@JourneymanDuck Uploading with the "from the web" option fails, interestingly

11:15 AM
not suprised

Imgur dosen't do SVG

@JourneymanDuck Ah. Makes sense.

but why D:

and there was a pretty bad bug with SVG and edge mentioned on meta

11:17 AM
@JourneymanDuck linky?

I will say, if anyone does it on RA, I will suspend you so hard you'd wish you were never born

@JourneymanDuck Oh! AngryMan Geek Duck!

@rahuldottech I don't remember where I saw it ;p

@JourneymanDuck I couldn't find it either. huh.

Q: SVG files and billion laughs attack

TechtwaddleSVG files are susceptible to billion laughs attack. Our website allows users to upload/submit markdown files and we run the .md file through marked.js before rendering it. Now images in the markdown get rendered as, <img src="https://evilsite.com/badsvg.svg"/> in the webpage. Browsers will pre...

You should have left them a gift of freshly brewed ginger beer.

we swapped over to a new building management company today. the OOH emergency number redirected straight through the managing director of the new company
he said he would send her a formal letter
basically the start of eviction proceedings

not digging the minecraft april fools day joke

11:27 AM
what is it?

They swapped out the textures for something out of a 90s dos game, but worse
with makes it pretty much unplayable for me
but it looks even worse

Minecraft textures are already sub-90s-DOS-game level
That's more like 80s EGA

11:45 AM
Scored these at a garage sale this morning!

nice
cc @Bob ;p

That's cute :)
@allquixotic, where's the chatbot?

@bwDraco currently not working
+ there's probably a breaking change to SE coming soon

12:03 PM
Well, today's April 1, after all.

quack.

Let's forget this ever happened.
But I hate the April Fools tradition.

Why not both?

Misspoke here.

12:05 PM
Beat me to it in the time it took to find the image :P

Some AFD jokes are mean

Apr 2 '17 at 16:33, by bwDraco
This is why I hate April Fools. I know people will call me out for breaking a time-honored tradition, but it literally gets impossible to distinguish between truth and lies on April 1st. People have to make the pranks so realistic, it annoys me to no end.

those are not cool.
shrug
Or just do harmless, silly things

No more April Fools for me. April 1 isn't a special day.

You're taking it too seriously ;p

12:09 PM
well... how do I stay out of an April Fools discussion without creating disruption?

Well by being aware its a discussion. Or staying out of it
But saying that you're staying out of it, and no more kinda..
gives it actual weight ;p
ignoring it silently is fine, most people here seem to be doing it.

(I am also in the 'grumpy April Fool's folk' camp, if it helps)

which is fine.

While we're on the topic of April Fools... The holiday has evolved in recent years in such a way that's become a highly divisive matter.
Do we (or as some might say, should we) really need to make pranks realistic?

@bwDraco well, a lot of humour is more effective when people relate to it

12:15 PM
"Should we" because those who care about the tradition will make it as realistic as possible to troll people.

"Care"

I don't see April Fools as an excuse to troll people, but some people find it to be a good idea or even necessary. Because tradition.

So... you hate the duck?

Not the duck. But some people consider trollish pranks to be strongly preferable over simple, lighthearted humor.
The duck fits into the theme of Stack Overflow and I don't object to it.
But when pranks and jokes seriously troll people, that's crossing the line for me.

@bwDraco Where is your evidence for it being divisive? It appears to be only you who is upset ... ;)

12:20 PM
April Fools' Day has historically been a contentious day on Wikipedia, and the limits on how editors may play jokes and pranks on other users and the encyclopedia have been disputed for some time. While there is no consensus on a complete April Fools' Day joke ban, editors are advised to use common sense. To help settle the debate on what is and is not allowed on April Fools' Day, several rules have since been established based on this request for comment in 2013 and this request for comment in 2016 for users who choose to play jokes on April Fools'. == The rules == Wikipedia policies an...
This went up to ArbCom.

@bwDraco jokes at any time can be mean spirited
or harmless

(for those not familiar with this, the Arbitration Committee is a body of elected Wikipedia editors responsible for making binding decisions on highly contentious topics which could not be resolved by community discussion or administrator actrion)

The words storm and teacup spring to mind

lol
Why not say it straight?
> You're creating a storm in a teacup.
...and that would sound too heavy-handed, possibly even give the appearance of a mod action.

@bwDraco we're making a fairly large mound out of a fairly small mound...
Much Ado about Nothing?

12:26 PM
@bwDraco Exactly. I was trying to be nice. Now what I suggest is you take the teacup and have an nice cup of tea, or a nice cup of your new coffee. While doing that take a break and relax. None of the April's fools jokes are harming you so just let it go ...

*drops the gavel*
> Dismissed!

And go play wack-a-mole :)

maybe the mike.
(poor mike.)

12:27 PM
:P
So... I wanted to go out and take some pictures.

@bwDraco There you go then. Go out and take a break from worrying about useless pranks.

For whatever reason, my new Lumix FZ1000 has trouble focusing accurately past about 200mm (equiv. 135). The problem might be tied to the AF algorithms used for multi-area AF, since it appears to clear up if I use the single-area or pinpoint modes.
Any ideas? Is this a common issue with the FZ1000?

err
maybe photography?
You'd need someone with the same camera to really tell

well... Adobe DNG Converter is faster than ever! It looks like it now processes multiple files in parallel, taking full advantage of my 8C/16T processor.
In other news...
I'm getting sick and tired of calls and voicemails purporting to be from the Consulate General of China saying that I have something to claim from them (via Google Translate). This is a known scam.
I'm not a Chinese national, for crying out loud!
Also, they have spoofed local NYC numbers in their caller ID, including several numbers that point to the consulate.

Should I file a police report?

Journeyman Duck? Are you planning to keep this? Because it is cool.

I am completely unaware of my avatar being a yellow hog.
@FleetCommand for 6-8 periods of time.

user226528
"Periods of time"?

Hours, minutes, seconds, pants...

Sounds like British English to me.

2:47 PM
How crazy is it that september isn't the 7th month, october isn't the 8th, november isn't the 9th, and december isn't the 10th!?

@JourneymanDuck What happened to you? A profile makeover?

@Boris_yo HE JUST LIKES DUCKS, OKAY!?

Didn't know that he does.

user226528
@rahuldottech I've often wondered but never cared to check. Probably a calendar change akin to that cursed daylight saving phenomenon.

> Why is September the ninth month when it means 7, and likewise for October, November, December...?
-- Jessie Churchill, San Francisco, USA

Septemeber is the ninth month for us, but the Romans had only ten months in their calendar, so the number-names worked out right for them.
-- Amanda , Norman, OK, USA

It's one of the things "the Romans did for us" - slotting in two months - July named after Julius Caesar and August named after Augustus Caesar. This nudged the later months along by two and so September became the ninth instead of the seventh month etc.
@FleetCommand
Goddarn. She just cancelled. That was the one thing I had to look forward to.

2:51 PM
@Boris_yo quack.

Annnnnnnnnnd we're home

2.1 just ran up and handed me his trousers o_O

Cloudflare says that it's the world's fastest DNS service out there by a long shot.

3:03 PM
I wonder why they doing it
/me tries to follow the money

It's run in partnership with APNIC, which owns that IP address (along with the rest of 1.0.0.0/8).

@djsmiley2k they run (authoritatitive) DNS servers as their core business and its relatively cheap advertising

Cloudflare is best known for their CDN and DDOS protection services.
Hmm...
It wasn't Cloudflare which mitigated that 1.7 Tbps Memcached attack (that was Arbor Networks), but they certainly have the capacity to do it.

Cloudflare had the 600Gbps attack iirc
the ones which that guy wrote about ;D
/me has a blank brain after driving for 3+ hours

DNS lookups seem to have dramatically sped up.
Though I wouldn't be able to tell for sure without some means of formal testing.

@rahuldottech Nice prank...

This month, April Fools and Easter ended up on the same day. If you celebrate Easter, then happy Easter! And if you celebrate April Fools, that's weird, it's not a holiday.

> APNIC's research group held the IP addresses 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1. While the addresses were valid, so many people had entered them into various random systems that they were continuously overwhelmed by a flood of garbage traffic. APNIC wanted to study this garbage traffic but any time they'd tried to announce the IPs, the flood would overwhelm any conventional network.

We talked to the APNIC team about how we wanted to create a privacy-first, extremely fast DNS system. They thought it was a laudable goal. We offered Cloudflare's network to receive and study the garbage traffic in exchange
