Happy Easter to anyone who cares
Oh man so drunk

@bwDraco what happened to it?
00:44
@djsmiley2k its saturday
Mar 4 at 1:41, by bwDraco
Basically, machine has been giving me frequent BSODs, and the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth intermittently stop working, requiring a full power cycle to recover. These failures, as well as crash dump analyses, point to one thing: the wireless network adapter.
(was taking a shower, sorry)
apparently the Meltdown patch allowed arbitrary, unprivileged, kerrnel memory reads and writes on Windows. Awesome.
yup
twas rushed

lots of layout issues and false starts but finally got it going
the pathing is a bit weird
what is that?
oh for your 3d
02:57
@Bob Star Trek Armada 3 total conversion for Sins is out (final release unless there are showstoppers), I played it for about an hour in single player, seems pretty balanced and stable so far
not to say it won't crash if we do multi, but one of the devs does bi-weekly meetups on ICO where he plays games with the community and they've done STA3 before

anyone know anything about direct current?V
vs alternating?
@William you're going to need to be more specific
in what context? what are you trying to solve / learn / figure out?
I'm trying to wire a countdown timer to my headlights on my car. I guess I'm wondering can I just use an alternating count down timer in my car like I have in my house.
my headlights do not have a timer by default
if not can I maybe buy a timer that works off of direct current.
a countdown timer? like, have the lights turn off automatically after you turn off the vehicle?
yeah
Something like this wired into the headlighst amazon.com/gp/product/B00002NAPD/…
I should be able to use a meter to figure out which pin on this works amazon.com/PT-Auto-Warehouse-CBS-3080-Combination/dp/B00NWT122G/…
and wire it in
my car is doesn't have a timer cut off. no place that I called new how to fix it
well you need to know what's being supplied to the headlights to figure out what sort of timer you need, I guess - not sure if the headlights are supplied with AC or DC, as most cars these days have various electrical paths with both in them AFAIK
04:22
I'm fairly certain it is DC
the alternator on a conventional vehicle usually produces AC but that can get rectified to DC at some point
What if the battery feeds directly to the lights
right, if it's just the battery then it'd be DC
because I guarantee my lights stay on if turn off the car and remove the keys
it drains my battery :P
most electronics are designed to operate on DC, but if the timing functionality is coming from the sinusoidal oscillations of the AC wave, you can't use that, probably, because whatever AC gets generated in a car likely won't be consistent enough to be used for timing
04:24
I have AC timers in my house like this one amazon.com/gp/product/B00002NAPD/…
might not work great because the voltage is different though
can I use an AC timer on a DC current?
yeah, there was a problem in Britain recently where the EU/UK power grid was causing timers on tea kettles to be off by several seconds because of fluctuations in the frequency of AC electricity across the grid due to insufficient power availability in... somewhere... Kosovo? I forget
if the timer is using the AC oscillations as its timing source, DC definitely won't work unless you have a very accurate transformer that generates good quality sine waves from the DC, but that's inefficient
probably better is to have an internal timing source like a quartz crystal
are there any dumb like I liked above DC timers.
I'm sorry did this mean the AC timer will work on a DC current
> yeah
no, that "yeah" was just ... a conversational ... somethingorother
assuming the voltage is high enough
like an "um" :P
04:29
I would prefer to get a "dumb" timer that works off of direct current. Any ideas
this wasn't my original question obviously
if you know someone that will do that to my car awesome.
I would pay them.
That was my 1st solution but it requires schematics
and I can't voltimeter 10 different cables
also the dealership told me old cars allowed that while new ones might get screwed up from the onboard computer
hmmm it is similar. maybe I can find a Honda Element instructable. Off to do more research.
unless you have an EV, a really recent (2016+) or hybrid car, it should be similar
its funny the picture of the healight switch in the instructable is the same as the one in my car
yeah recent cars have auto lights as a feature. I don't :'(
Thank you!
If I had multiple cars I'm sure I could eventually get it right but a timer seems like the least intrusive method
05:04
@William I was under the impression everything in your car is 12 or 24v DC
more typically 12
before you do anything buy a multimeter.
and learn how to use it.
i have 1
do you know of any 12v or 25v dc timers?
you can totally multimeter 10 different cables
what's a timer here?
something that turns on things at specific times?
ah!
like a kitchen timer for an hou.r I was planning to just wire it into the ignition but I have determined that I may have to rewire the stock wiring extensively
Sounds like what you need is a relay
somebody did this on the honda element forms and basically you have to cut or strip at least one stock wire
I would prefer to just have a kitchen timer that cuts off after an hour that I set when I very rarely need my lights
05:08

Q: Why don't some modern cars automatically turn off headlights when stopped?

Dan DascalescuI forgot the lights on overnight on a 2016 Volkswagen Jetta and 16 hours later when I came back to the car the lights were still on but the car wouldn't start. Can't the car check the battery level and automatically turn off lights if it had been stopped for a long while so as to prevent the bat...

Yeah I'm the idiot in that Q&A :P
@William "delay timer relay" looks like a good google search
but you also should consider the current that goes through the headlights
oh
I may be misunderstanding instead of messing with the ignition(and touching factory stock wires) at all I want is a kitchen timer
Do you have a service manual?
05:11
not a kitchen timer.
Go find/buy one.
Basically you need to work out if the vehicle is on, and based off that switch off the power to the headlights.
If I have a timer that caps out at 1 hour then I don't need to wire it into the ignition.
I drive to and from school everyday and never at night
How do you know when the hour starts and ends?
"never at night" why not just turn the lights off then? ;p
rain
05:13
no no
I mean, why not only...
so you basically want to switch on the lights, and turn them off after an hour unless its reset?
exactly
no touching stock wires.
You'd need to get wires in somewhere
I called 6 places including official honda dealerships and most said because of they way the Honda Element is made it isn't exactly easy and refused to do it
1 place said it can't be done :P
05:17
ya, definately want to grab a service manual
or a heynes guide equivilent
(or a good, slightly crazy old school mechanic ;p)
I desperately need all of those
cough
Pretty sure you can buy/copyright-infringe those trivially.
well its hard to pirate a mechanic...
^ lol.
how do you reset it
05:22
you use a momentary switch I suspect.
but with these things, read/understand the manual
honestly I would be fine just wiring the ignition straight to the lights with a regular realy
I don't care about the timer part
unless I am skipping the ignition all together and the a relay is not needed
well the relay is simple
turning it off after an hour is the tricky bit
honest question why can't I just use an AC like kitchen timer?
cause voltage/current/design....
assuming the voltage is the same though
wouldn't it just be constant and work
05:26
Well if its so simple, and the kitchen timer is cheap, why not buy/test it?
you can pretty trivially even bench test it with a 12 v wallwart
I think I can figure everything out with out manual except for the fuse relay box
its funny I wouldn't have bought this car just for this reason
I like things that are "idiot" proof

ah lol
oops
ugh
(I actually watched that launch as far as they'd show it, and this seems like one of those slightly petty bureaucratic moves...)
and this could mean no more live launch videos (or hopefully they can get the right licence)

@RogUE Depends on your definition of "what happened"
Explain, in your definition of 'what happened'..
I think the Duck is slowly taking over the chat, slowly.

Back on the job today. I'm currently between games at a softball doubleheader event, and used the FZ1000 for a bit alongside my Pentax K-3 II and D FA* 70-200mm f/2.8 lens. The Lumix just wowed me, almost matching the DSLR in image quality while shooting considerably faster.
It's not a substitute for the big gun with moving targets or indoor events, but 12 fps continuous shooting is no joke.
Can't wait to try out high-speed video...
18:49
@bertieb yes

Hahahahaha. From today's spam:
> What is a marketing qualified lead?
A marketing qualified lead (MQL) is a prospect who is more likely to become a customer because he or she has already been primed through various methods. Warming up this person to your brand, developing trust and positioning him or her to accept your solution is often accomplished through the content you offer.
Spamming me is not priming me :)
