14:00
that says its full
hm
try ncdu on the mount point?
(or du -ah)
see where the space has actually gone
wow
bangs my head into the wall
enlightenment headbanging I hope?
I have been trying to install a CS:GO server. I don't know what happened but it looks like that the CS:GO have been installed into two separate folders, completing the entire 12G.
I don't know what happened during installation but it's not suppost to take 12G
I'll have to investigate further
14:07
Actually, I had no idea what I was doing either ;)
ahahaahahhahaha
Just went through logical troubleshooting steps.
Side question: What does it take to be a good sys admin?
I'm into Computer Engineering but I have always had a taste to sys admin, networking and such areas...
I have a few services up and running but sometimes I get stuck and I start to think "dude... You really suck at this"
lol
Its just a set of skills and intellectual curiocity I guess
I'd be a terrible programmer
Exactly what I think about myself.
I wouldnt think I would be a "good programmer"
I have tried and it's not my beach
14:17
I want to be a sysadmin, kinda hard getting hired as one though ;)
but essentially, its just a set of skills
My background's in cyberforensics
What would you be hired as then=?
Donno. Been applying for jobs for ages ;p
wow
Out of curiosity, where do you live?
Here in Portugal it's not that hard beeing hired as sys admin
Singapore
lots of jobs for programmers
desktop support should be my jazz but most of my applications seem to be eaten by grue.
Singapore is known as an exporter of "cheap labour" right?
14:21
lol
no, that's india
we import cheap labour
ahahahhahahaha
cyberforensics? Have you worked on something in that area?
I have a degree in it
Ohh... I didn't know there was degree in cyberforensics
@JoaoTorres there can be degrees in almost anything
14:29
well that and information security management
I thought it was only cybersecurity degree and cyberforensics would be a discipline in it
ISO27001?
ewwwww
crosses fingers
I hope this works
else I have to resort to the crazy fixes
or rebuilding
@JourneymanGeek I'd suggest they see your degree and think you're too highly qualified
which will be a pain
@djsmiley2k alas. I couldn't get a job before cause no one would consider you without a degree.
14:30
See I'm a compsci guy,
i live compsci
@djsmiley2k I have the same opinion. They wouldn't want to hire a guy and has to pay 1000+
i work compsci
well, weird mix of sysadmin + desktop support + 1/2/3rd line helpdesk
1000+? That's janitor salaries here ;p
@djsmiley2k that's basically my last proper job
loved it
yah
something new every day
:D
blah, ubuntu
14:32
u broke it?
and that's why i don't use ubuntu generally xD
@djsmiley2k I can't upgrade
I guess my job questing as generally been quite lucky
welp, use the ubuntu fix 'format, reinstall!'
it's either that or use sudo
there's a bunch of odd tweaks here outside my usual stuff
used sudo
14:33
ah aurgh7
basically do-release-upgrade is barfing on something
trying to fix a systme you can't just blow up :(
any log output?
I found a nice bug in the ubuntu net installer the other day
it'll warn you it a unclean install target (fine, go ahead)
oh there's files already here -barf
... I'm like.... but I just clicked the button to accept the fact there's already files there arrrugh!
(I actually hit enter as it's the ncurses installer not gui but don't tell them that!)
@djsmiley2k its quite literally a known bug they haven't fixed
... wait a sec
which, yours or the one i encountered?
@djsmiley2k I coulda sworn this was a systemd box
14:37
that thing, irugh
I've still not had time enough to sit down and figure out all the things I need to know about it
I've been used to openrc and upstart and the rest for so long, it's completely... wrong feeling
Soooooooooo what does cyber forensics cover?
thing is I don't have a clue what's running some of my boot time things then ._.
I'd of loved to do something like that at uni, alas my choices were far more limited
@djsmiley2k 2 modules of forensics - desktop and database with a touch of sluthing
14:39
computing, comp sci, network computing, programming or business computing
oh and computer engineering
Some modules on things like system design and analysis, a few on ISM
I have a second major in management, which was a mistake
I wanted to do networks but it demanded I pass the 2nd yr math module which I just couldn't get on with
I liked automations, but nothing else made sense
rajikas theroum and such
coding bores me to death
I love working on servers and making things run, well, when I'm not depressed and sulky ;)
Nod
I love replacing things with little scripts to make them better, faster, easier
you know, the things computers were designed to do!
but yeah, this needs a rebuild ;)
which is going to get complicated.
I have 2 databases (mysql and postgres) and a web server mainly on this
14:42
grab the configs and blow the thing away
oh and maybe make a note of the versions ://
Wanna hire a sysadmin to do it for you? :D
lol
I can do it
Oh, and the network config on this is messy and semi documented on SU :)
anyway, this is supported to 2019
so no real rush
and yanno
I was going to fix something else.
500 reviews done \o/
(first post reviews)
now I still need to fix up my at home instance of KVM so it can talk to the server (and maybe install that webui @bob linked to try), fix the matrix install, work out how to do backups, and plan for a reinstall.

@JourneymanGeek Hi. Can the OP of a question that was put on hold still mark one of its entries as an answer?
yeah, they can accept one of the answers.
@FleetCommand I don't remember ;p

We have an off-topic questions here:

Q: How powershell commands were named cmdlets (command lets)

RBTI was trying to figure out the nomenclature of calling commands in powershell as command-let (cmdlet). Why they are simply not called commands instead. I could only guess from this wikipedia page that this might be somehow an abbreviation of command line interface to interact with commands writte...

user226528
Still, does anyone know the answer?
@FleetCommand It's answered in the comment above yours. I'd argue that it's not off topic as there is an explicit answer in the MS docs.
user226528
@DavidPostill You won't survive a day in Wikipedia. It is easy to trick you with a link.
user226528
@DavidPostill Still... off-topic.
15:45
@FleetCommand ?
What part of "A cmdlet is a lightweight command that is used in the Windows PowerShell environment." - the definition by MS who invented PowerShell, does not answer the question? It clearly says they are named that way because MS decided to name them that way.
user226528
@DavidPostill Yes. It does say that. And that's not the question.
@FleetCommand Which part of superuser.com/help/on-topic says that it is not on topic?
@FleetCommand Replace How with Why in it answers the question.
user226528
@DavidPostill Press CTRL+F in your web browser and look for the word "Etymology" in that page? Do you find it? No. Off-topic!
user226528
@DavidPostill That's altering the question. It is like moving a goal post.
@FleetCommand "Why they are simply not called commands"? Because MS said they are called CmdLets
@FleetCommand No is not. It's fixing the grammar. He said in the question body "Why they are simply not called commands"
user226528
15:54
@DavidPostill This kind of reply is called "evasive response" intended to elude answering the question. "Why are trees green?" "Because God created them that way". "Why is my brother's hair blond?" "Because he was born that way."
user226528
"Why is this username called 'DavidPostill'?" "Because he typed that word in his web browser upon sign up."
user226528
The problem with elusive answering is that the person who asks the question already assumes as much.
16:10
@BenN That's a bit too deep for me :)
@FleetCommand Because that is the name on my birth certificate :)
@DavidPostill No Space?
@jokerdino lol. I don't like spaces in usernames :)
WHAT. THE. FUCK.
Now is this real?
Real or April Fools?
This is sure to raise some questions...
I'm waiting for some real answers. Is this pointing to a real product on the horizon?
16:27
@djsmiley2k that's the best mix!
A product teaser on April Fools' Day is raising some serious question marks. The numbers look plausible, but I'm waffling between real and fake.
@Mokubai never! It's the fault of the medical professional in the first place.
Who created the slide deck?
Blah. Just another teaser.
@PowershellforLinux the best mix is what I've got right now - a supportive manager
the problem atm being that we have one client doing a huge migration
Probably fake. Whoever made this put a serious amount of effort into imitating AMD trade dress.
16:31
and it's just killing everything else, no time to think sometimes
This is why I hate April Fools. I know people will call me out for breaking a time-honored tradition, but it literally gets impossible to distinguish between truth and lies on April 1st. People have to make the pranks so realistic, it annoys me to no end.
I hate April Fools.
I'd much rather have business as usual rather than have my routine disrupted just to let people play pranks.
As would I, but alas, tradition
Well, people in the world of work might disagree, given the monotony of many jobs...
Not having a sense of humor is not healthy. And that's the truth.
@djsmiley2k and that too. I had one of those once
A little too supportive
-_- isp blocked pirateproxy.vip :O
/me laughs how futile all this is
they think they are gonna stop kodi? lololol
17:07
dum de dummm
man so many movies I've missed watching due to childrens
not that id haveseen them anyway, but i would of concidered some
I cut myself badly while cycling today. I'll probably be left with four small scars on my calf.
Ow
@djsmiley2k I want to go into computer forensics!
Or rather, digital forensics
18:36
then do so
stop writing badly hackable php first tho plzD:
@djsmiley2k That's just me learning :P

@NickAlexeev You have a question?
@allquixotic I'm just not a fan of April Fools' Day.
@allquixotic how is that not a site o_O

2 hours later…

If I have 3 monitors, do they all need to be digital output or analog? I've got one monitor that's connected to my R9 270x with VGA (Monitor) to DVI I (GPU), another DVI D (Dual) to HDMI, and finally an Apple Monitor DVI D (single) in a dual connector. The VGA one refuses to work - do I need something other than VGA?
22:06
@AndrewLi it's not the number of monitors; it's the VGA to DVI.
in order for a passive VGA to DVI conversion to work, your card has to have a decoder for the analog signal on the DVI port
nevermind
Well, everything was working fine with the VGA before I addrd the apple one
there's your answer -- if you want to get 3 monitors working with that card, you have to convert everything over to displayport
Oh DP
I believe DVI-D to displayport can be a passive conversion with a cable
VGA to displayport will need an active converter box
Okay. Thanks!
I'll just get a DP adapter
So I could replace the VGA to DVI I to HDMI to DP? It says DP doesn't count towards the 2 limit

@allquixotic hi! :P
@allquixotic kinda curious what time you ended up waking
@DavidPostill Should I migrate it to SuperUser? The question is in the context of PC repair.
@NickAlexeev I'm not sure. There might be someone on SU who could answer that. @JourneymanGeek what do you think?
Not really in our scope imo
@NickAlexeev So we have a No and a Not Sure ... I guess No wins :)
23:34
Also, if that worked, people would totally sell USB grounding cables.
