12:47 AM
(somebody should pin the above link; @JourneymanGeek you around?)

Will shortly. Currently on walkies

> Due to a history of malpractice, Firefox 64 will not trust TLS certificates issued by Symantec (including under their GeoTrust, RapidSSL, and Thawte brands). Microsoft, Google, and Apple are implementing similar measures for their respective browsers.
wow, Thawte got distrusted - they've always been one of the big ones that were trustworthy (and expensive)

Iirc geotrust is big and old too

Bob
1:11 AM
@HornOKPlease Yea, when they said everything Symantec, they meant everything Symantec.

Everything symantec touches seems to turn to gold <deleted>

Bob
@HornOKPlease Basically the entire Verisign collection went to Symantec in 2010...
RSA => Verisign => Symantec => dead => DigiCert
Anyone want a zombie RSA cert?

my main domain chains up to GlobalSign :)

I have Comodo PositiveSSL.

I just use LE :p
ugh.
Trying to play sunset overdrive. Its got a particularly annoying jumping puzzle I need to progress involving needing to jump on 10 platforms and performing a jump attack on the last. I hate jumping puzzles.
Did the 10 and was about to do the jump attack and...
"GEEEEK?"
I think I'll pick it up later.

Bob
2:10 AM
@JourneymanGeek jq!

right done

@bwDraco Another GPU chipshot in case you're interested (a rumor, at least)

@Bob jq?

Not much information. Might be a 12nm chip.
IMO not a very meaningful rumor.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek jumpquests, at least that's what we called them in ms :P

2:18 AM
ahh
@Bob tbh its not as annoying as most
other than AHHHHHHH DAMN IT ALMOST GOT IT AHHHHHHH
(and it was my dad asking me about some $mostly_pointless_thing_no_one_cares_about....)
basically some site had a half-donkeyed tool for preventing people from downloading PDFs....
and you can just find the PDF location in the page source and download it there.

2:44 AM
...welp. Downloading an ISO for Windows 10 version 1809 〜October 2018 Update〜 via the media creation tool.
Not actually using it for installation or upgrade, but keeping it on hand just in case.

@bwDraco I usually use edge to "fake" being on an ISO device for that ;p

(wrote it the way subtitles are written in Japanese)
> Windows 10 version 1809 〜October 2018 Update〜
Threw out my old 1709 disc.
Still keeping my 1803 disc because Astaroth has yet to be upgraded (it's set to defer feature updates for 30 days—a perk of Windows 10 Pro)
Almost done verifying the new 1809 disc.
...aaaand done.
(if anyone asks: yes, I do burn Windows installation DVDs)

3:27 AM
Apple asked me to come into their store to 'demonstrate' the problem with my Vega 20 MBP's battery slowly draining when the GPU is fully utilized. I'm going to have ESO, ARK, and Unigine Valley on hand to demonstrate the problem.

@HornOKPlease Larger AC adapter? What did it ship with?

Basically, the Vega 20 + the Core i9 combined draw enough power that the 87W charger can't keep up, so the battery discharges at about the rate you'd expect while watching a video, even though the adapter is supplying 87W to the computer.
@bwDraco somebody on Reddit bought a 100W USD-PD adapter and the Mac only draws 87W
it seems to be limited on the Mac side to 87W

@HornOKPlease Is 13W more enough?
I suppose they could update the EC (err, SMC in Mac parlance) to support 100W input if needed...

@bwDraco maybe not, I'm not sure what the TDP of a Vega M 20 + i9-8950HK + Apple's display panel + the motherboard and cooling + TouchBar is :P
(this is with zero attached USB devices but WiFi and Bluetooth on and in-use)

(because Stolas, like many modern laptops, does have an EC which performs the same functions)

3:30 AM
to their credit, the machine performs pretty well, and the thermals are a bit less hideous than dGPU MBPs in recent memory
but I think this is a fatal flaw with USB-PD (the initial revision) in general
100W isn't quite enough for serious dGPUs that match or beat the mobile GTX 1060, especially when you have a whole system to run on that 100W, not just the GPU

Actually, I've written about this nearly three years ago:
Feb 11 '16 at 20:01, by bwDraco
I know that over USB Type-C cabling, one can carry up to 100 W (5A @ 20V), but that's not enough for some devices.
Feb 11 '16 at 20:02, by bwDraco
I suppose they'll probably mandate the use of a certain type of active cable for safety as 240 W is no laughing matter...

3:54 AM
it's kind of funny; Apple MBPs usually are underpowered with their GPUs being too weak for intensive gaming and such, or run so hot that they get thermally throttled really bad
Now they have a good enough cooling solution, a more powerful GPU, but the system can't deliver enough power to keep it running at full blast!

yesterday, by bwDraco
...interesting. Under heavy load, and with high-power devices plugged into USB ports, the battery on my HP ENVY x360 can be drained slowly even when plugged in. I wonder if a larger AC adapter would help...
(stock AC adapter is 45W, which is barely adequate)

4:29 AM
Sadly, there is nothing in the USB Power Delivery spec which would permit a power source to output more than 100W, even in a separate mode. It would need to be a proprietary connector.

Yeah. I seriously need to learn to check my sources better.

@bwDraco in your defence, bloomburg is a great source for some things.
common sense though....

In the past, my tendency to post loads of rumors and other questionable content unchecked and without checking my sources had resulted in several instances of disruption. While sources are now checked more closely and rumors are marked as such when posted, this is not a fully solved problem and disruption due to misleading content is still possible under certain conditions.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek At this point bloomburg sits on my "do not trust" list somewhere between gawker and the verge

4:41 AM
@Bob they're probably reasonably useful for... actual finance use
which is precisely why they suck for tech

Bob
@JourneymanGeek If they publish shit like this (with no retraction or further information, mind), I won't trust them for that either.

@Bob well, I'm a fan of being skeptical of anything I see or read.

Bob
> Briefly stated, the Gell-Mann Amnesia effect is as follows. You open the newspaper to an article on some subject you know well. In Murray's case, physics. In mine, show business. You read the article and see the journalist has absolutely no understanding of either the facts or the issues. Often, the article is so wrong it actually presents the story backward—reversing cause and effect. I call these the "wet streets cause rain" stories. Paper's full of them. In any case, you read with exasperation or amusement the multiple errors in a story, and then turn the page to national or internatio

5:23 AM
@HornOKPlease I'm getting the weird idea that the MacBook Pro's VRM is not even equipped to handle more than 87W (hence the weird wattage value). reddit.com/r/macbookpro/comments/91256u/…

5:43 AM
@Bob which tech news sites do you trust then? Not The Register or Verge or Bloomberg...

@rahuldottech you don't trust any :p

Bob
@rahuldottech I mean, the three you listed are possibly the least reliable of the lot

@Bob not terribly surprised, their my account page here is also broken half the times I try to use it.

Bob
So I'm not sure what my distrust of them is supposed to imply

@Bob lol, which ones aren't? Ars, I suppose?
Huh. I thought Verge was cool?

Bob
5:48 AM
@rahuldottech Ars is usually reasonable. Anandtech is also decent. Funnily enough, the local SMH is alright but they source a lot of articles from Mashable anyway.

Also woop for screwy notifications

@JourneymanGeek except HowToGeek! /s
@Bob ah, okay then

Bob
@rahuldottech ...have you seen the crap Verge puts out?

@Bob the register is alright imo. Sometimes overly sarcastic but not usually technically wrong.

@Bob not really. Just a couple of their videos. Their Instagram videos feature this suuuuuper annoying woman tho who tries to break tech topics down but just ends up pissing me off

5:52 AM
Kinda wished I had a S9 now to try see if the "pre-5g" CA can be made to work.

Bob
@FMLCat True, I think my complaint at the time was the overly sensationalistic headlines and language.

@FMLCat oh god.
El reg's articles on my employer are horrifying

@Bob I'd be slightly skeptical of the company saying "our products are fine" even if an "outside" firm did the audit, but with companies like Apple and Amazon going "We found no evidence that their boards are wonky", plus Supermicro saying that, it's pretty clear the entire story is BS

Bob
@rahuldottech ...have you seen the "how to build a gaming pc" video?
That one was by a Verge editor IIRC

@Bob no, lol. Worth a watch for a laugh?

Bob
5:54 AM
@rahuldottech If you can find it
Oh here's a mirror

@JourneymanGeek wait what is your employer a big country? Or do you mean the military? ;P

@rahuldottech the company that has the contract with the government agency

@JourneymanGeek ah.
> New Verizon execs say old Verizon execs made a $5 billion mistake betting on AOL and Yahoo
Lmao who would've guessed

Bob
@HornOKPlease As has been pointed out so many times, the idea is ludicrous and reeks of technologically-challenged conspiracy theory. Because replacing an existing chip or even just the firmware is orders of magnitude easier to do and harder to detect than adding a, what was it, "rice-grain sized chip" to the board somewhere.

5:56 AM
@Bob yeah tbh that's what I meant. As usual you manage to word it better than me.

Bob
The burden of proof on this one is firmly in Bloomburg's court, IMO.

@Bob did... did he just put on a fake "anti-static" bracelet that was literally a rubber band? :D

@Bob yeah. I read the article and I just went... wot

Bob
@HornOKPlease Yuuuuuuuuuuuup.
There's so much wrong with it... like, he did literally everything wrong.

Q: Can a water damaged motherboard or power supply ruin a functional CPU?

Frank FanelliI found half of a desktop on the side of the road the other day. It included a 430 watt power supply, DVD r/writer, ASRock B250M-HDV motherboard, Pentium g4560 CPU, as well as a case with both side panels missing. This open case left part of the motherboard exposed to the elements on both sides. ...

@rahuldottech on the contrary they probably did very well for themselves

Lol. Would answer this but its too late/early

Bob
It's almost an experiment in how many things you can do suboptimally or wrong and still end up with a working PC.
@FMLCat Isn't that an easy answer? "Yes." :P

I think he used too much thermal paste

6:06 AM
@Bob JayzTwoCents did that on youtube just a few days ago I think?

Sorry for the caps, too lazy to retype

DID HE FORGET FANS???
he has a 1080 and an 8700K and no case fans

@Bob it's more it depends. In terms of testing the mobo itself, since some have diagnostic displays, beepers, etc, and you can manually measure the output of the voltage regulators

Lmao
Okay, losing access to Internet for a while. Be back later

@rahuldottech I've actively tried and failed to do that around here. Even the underground clubs that used to be dead spots have coverage now thanks to L800 penetration

6:11 AM
@FMLCat well, my mom's taking the WiFi hotspot router thingy to her office so...
I don't have a Bhutan sim

Bob
6:23 AM
@HornOKPlease He put the PSU in backwards. He seems to have left out a screw on the CPU HSF.

1 hour later…
7:32 AM
yay, 2 unique hats
tho one is cheating.

8:22 AM
Morning all

8:58 AM
morning
the teams hat is broke

@Burgi Seems to be. Unless the script awarding it hasn't run yet. (@JourneymanGeek has got it).

maybe it only works if you are logged into teams?

@DavidPostill @Burgi I THINK there's a delay

which is a little unfair

I am logged into a team though - and logged into the teams page so not sure what's the trigger
I'll try with aibo, that acocunt has no modly powers ;)

9:13 AM
@DavidPostill are you going to try and win the game of hats again?

@Burgi If I have sufficient time I might try and stay on top of the Super User hat leaderboard ;)
I visited the mod team (logged in, of course) and upvoted a question and answer about an hour ago. Maybe voting is not the trigger

ooh secret hat
@DavidPostill can confirm that logging in is enough
I'm just not sure if its the main teams page is enough

All these hats
and all the ways to get them
something something something, Team Fortress 2

@bertieb just because you are already have a hat.... grumble grumble

@Burgi I was confused, but then realised you meant my avatar :P
Anyway, you seem to have a hat?

9:24 AM
yup

I have a hat on my hat.

Yo dawg!

(also, all MSE mods seem to have a mod hat on our avatars. Presumably so no one assumes we're employees ;p )

Ah, when it's actually relevant
@JourneymanGeek Does that mean all responses are made.... with the mod hat on? :P (fner fner)

9:27 AM
Don't blame me, blame the coffee I unusually had this morning

(actually One mod has a dog avatar, and mod hats on the many sites he mods. I just have this cause its adorbs. The other mod - someone edited a ex-winterbash hat into hers)

Dog avatars seem to be weirdly overrepresented among mods
...not a complaint, y'underdstand!

I can think of 3 or 4 off the top of my head, and I'm not at all well-acquainted with the denizens of TL :P

Undo, Niall, ChrisF come to mind.

9:30 AM
JoeTaxpayer also

I FOR ONE SUPPORT OUR CANINE OVERLORDS

@JourneymanGeek Which hat?

arf

@DavidPostill the retro one

@JourneymanGeek Maybe you all just did the trigger? It's an easy one to get.

9:33 AM
naw, don't have it
so presumably not yet

9:44 AM
Oh hello, 5.0
You've made big changes to your editor, you say
Won't that just be peachy

10:04 AM
Egggggghhhhhhh
Blocks
Wordpress
Why

i feel i did warn you about WP5

I think you mentioned it, yea
But I wasn't prepared for the straitjacket they wanted to cosily wrap around me
Oh m'gosh how do I do the things I want to do
And why is the editor a freakin' tiny column in the middle of the window?
Harrumph
and double harrumph
Weeeeelllll, at least they have a fancy-ass gif for the Generating preview... bi; that's surely a great addition!
(apologies to those who have to buy new sarcasm detectors now)

rollback?

Could do
quickly checks backups

or install the classic editor

10:09 AM
I'm loathe to run an older version of WP tho

there are no security updates in v5

I mean, it does have a stellar security record which has no previous exploits
Oh really?

its purely for gutenberg

Do they all get backported to previous version? (if/when added)

not sure
probably not
upgrade to WP5, install the classic editor plugin, pray

10:13 AM
> pray
Just a normal day in WP-land then, hey?

10:28 AM
yup
welp
the PM is about to be fired

0_0
project manager or prime minister?

10:57 AM
prime minister

I'm not sure I like anyone as a replacement
Can we ask Canada if we can borrow Justin Trudeau for a wee while?
We promise to return him in decent condition
Michelle Obama has been in/touring the UK recently
Could ask her
Gary Linekar seems popular, and we know he's trustworthy enough to sell crisps

@bertieb he steals them!
i hate to say it but nicola sturegon is my preffered PM right now

D:

not sure how that would work though

Yea
What about Dara Ó Briain?
He's smart and quite funny

11:10 AM
not british
we need a government of national unity

Charlie Brooker?
Has the right amount of cynicism

he'd ban all mobile phones

I could live with that

charlie brooker it is....
what about lord sir sugar?
he is on the apprentice
and is a billionaire
apparently thats all the qualifications you need to be a world leader these days

lol I was thinking about him actually :P
and also "oh god please no"

11:27 AM
yay hat time

Juan M on December 12, 2018

The world is full of interesting yearly traditions.  Take for example the tomato and orange throwing events, the buffet for monkeys,  and the cheese rolling festivities.  With such examples of human creativity, we at Stack Overflow could not pass on this opportunity.  We have created and maintained our own yearly tradition – Winter Bash!

This year we are attempting to knit our users together in our love for hats for the 7th year in a row.  And this year, we’ve even added a way for you to get creative without wasting any real yarn.  Starting now (December 12, 2018) and going through …

Oh well
email sent
shrug

12:23 PM
@bertieb That's so weird. I use Tor and I never get that.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Guess I'll go over to Expert Sexchange Quora!

@bertieb stop routing thru china?
CHRISTMAS IS HERE! \o/

@djsmiley2k But, muh tea!
Welp, I can't review until it's sorted
Guess those Low Quality posts will have to fix themselves :P

I predict... a starwall explosion around new year :P

This question came from our site for professional and enthusiast programmers.
wtf so
this question is more terrrible and someone litterally doing a crap into the question window and posting it.

I would ask for a link
But I couldn't read it anyway >_<

@djsmiley2k That's been a hat for several years at least.
@djsmiley2k Link please

@DavidPostill hmm was in review queue
ah there's a history tab, is that new o_O

Q: Best way to organise one's sh/bash/python/etc. scripts

badpWhat is the best way to organise the sh/bash/python scripts you collect and write on your system?

I think I VTC'd that one

@bertieb It's closed so no worries. I would have closed as opinion based but that doesn't really matter.

12:51 PM
@DavidPostill Cheers, I can't check (due to rate limit ICYMI)

@bertieb find the mod who migrated it and take away their hats (source)

ffs outlok
2016 is shoddy.

@bertieb eh
its 08, things changed a lot since then

is there any software one could use to open mpp files
usually they require microsoft project but i don't have license

1:44 PM
@Aibobot Yea, I know; but it's OT these days, plus it's positively scored so will hang around

I mean for the beating the mod and stealing their hats ;p
@Mathematics might want to try softwarerecommendations.se with a little more details.

@Aibobot Ah ;-P
Well, better than beating them to a pulp I guess?

BUT HATS

@Aibobot thank you

2:06 PM
Man. I really wanna participate in winter bash. But... Exams
:'(
Next year

I mean I know I'm anti-apple in general
but they seem to be getting.... crap

2:23 PM
my friend who has used macs since 1992 is going to buy a PC
i think he will install Ubuntu but still...

@Burgi Nothing wrong with that

I mean I watch Louis Rossman and stuff
and some of the quality of the components is terrible.
@Burgi one of these perhaps?

2:42 PM
@djsmiley2k he wants a desktop for 3D rendering

ah, fair enough
@LawenceC
hmmm dart

3:08 PM

@Burgi heh, I wonder if they got those GPU accelerated yet
we used to just run a ton of (older) x86 blades

3:37 PM
interesting - so it's not the GPU per se, it's the turbo boost on the CPU... I wonder if there's a way to disable turbo boost on macOS

ffs
why the hell does gulp and node always fuck frack up when i am desperate for time

3:50 PM
Ah, a reply about the rate limit
Boils down to $generic_response
Glad I emailed
...not that I'm especially grumpy today or anything

Ok I can't participate in Winter Bash this year but I want at least one hat, which is the easiest to get?

@rahuldottech Can you get one by visiting the winter bash page?
(disclaimer: I know nothing about hats)
Oh
Post something around 0000 new years' (UTC)
In chat

No, but I just got "still fresh" on like six sites

And cough it might get starred
That gets a hat

3:55 PM
