All life's important questions
I think you were looking at these? :p
Big price drop thought hardly pocket change

@JourneymanGeek interested
however I bought an OVH MG-512 at 50% off

12:48 AM
:p I know. I also think impractical, thought cool as heck

12:58 AM
Perhaps, as funds increase, I might get a dedicated server at some point...
(for the time being, most of the stuff I do is local and does not require a server; the few that do are on small VPSes)

Bob
1:26 AM
@HornOKPlease O_O
YOU BOUGHT ONE?!

Wait. Bought ?

Bob
2:10 AM
@JourneymanGeek The basic screen is pretty readable in office lighting
and saves a lot of power
actively fiddling with the watch uses a lot of power

Bob
it switches alright to the smart screen when I move my hand
but I'm trying to figure out the correct gesture
with the pebble it was a shake to trigger backlighting
seems to work here as well
a tap always works

> To record their bowel habits before ingestion, they created the Stool Hardness and Transit (SHAT) score. And afterward, they recorded the length of time it took them to pass their stool via their self-made Found and Retrieved Time (FART) score.
naice, lmao
@JourneymanGeek I have questions
Non-x86 means...
No i386 or amd64 OS, right?
So you'd have to use... some fairly obsolete linux distro?

@rahuldottech in this case it's POWER9, which is supported by both RHEL and Ubuntu
And presumably any source-based distro that supports cross-compiling the installer would also be usable

3:34 AM
@ToxicFrog Ah
Only server editions though, from what I can see
Hm, Wikipedia's article on Ubuntu only mentions POWER8, not POWER9

IBM (who make the POWER9) claim Ubuntu 18.04 supports it
Wikipedia claims RHEL, SUSE, Debian, and CentOS.

openSUSE has Power Architecture support.

@rahuldottech actually there's a ton of non x86 arches.
Just that these days most are SOC style

@ToxicFrog cool, thanks
@JourneymanGeek ah

Mips for example. And there's actually a ton of older consoles that were power based
Oh and sparc

3:51 AM
ARM, of course.

@Ramhound Are you sure that Windows 7 has built-in support for USB 3? I was always under the impression that it doesn't, for some reason
> Windows 7 does not have built-in USB 3.0 support but after you install official drivers from manufacturer's site they work fine.

4:12 AM
> In Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012, we added support for USB 3.0.

Bob
4:23 AM
@rahuldottech It does not.

4:37 AM
@ToxicFrog that said I've never heard of arm workstation boards either

Q: Can't install Windows 98 SE in virtualbox - SUWIN caused a General Protection Fault in module <unknown>

DiogoSaraivaI get this error when installing Windows 98 Second Edition on virtualbox. my host is Mac OsX. the guest settings are the following: Base memory: 64 MB Boot Order: Floppy, Optical, Hard Disk Acceleration: VT-x/AMD-V, Nested Paging Video Memory: 10 MB Why I am getting that error and how can I...

The Windows 7 ISO does not but once installed through an update my understanding is that there is a default generic USB 3 driver that exists

Windows 7 does not ship with xHCI drivers.
That's why there's no USB 3.x support.

Even though Windows Update? Can you tell I have not used Windows 7 for a decade?

Because the xHCI standard wasn't finalized when Windows 7 reached RTM.

Yes, But it was when Sp1 was released

5:21 AM
Since I am way to tired to worry about the answer tonight I went ahead and adjusted it.
Dont care about the answer honestly since it likely will be torn apart by the question author anyways
no matter what effort I might have put into it

Bob
@Ramhound I don't believe a MS driver ever existed.
I used the Renesas one right through 2016.

(as it appears on Stolas, running Windows 10 version 1809)

Q: Webpages with certain types of ads cause Firefox to hang for several seconds, only on an HP ENVY x360 13 (2018, Ryzen 7)

bwDracoWhen I load certain webpages containing certain types of ads in Firefox, including https://www.wccftech.com/ and https://www.techspot.com/, the browser may hang at the UI level (I cannot select other tabs or open Firefox menus) for about five seconds at a time at a time while the page loads. This...

It took me this long to figure it out. It is apparently specific to this device, and involves the HTML5 sensor APIs.

@MichaelFrank and eventually we probe Uranus....

An absolutely infuriating bug, and one that took me several months to make sense out of.

7:08 AM
@JourneymanGeek Hey. Tamlyn Tomita, who played Ivanova’s role in the Babylon 5 pilot, is now playing a recurring character in Man in the High Castle
Thought you’d find that interesting as a fellow B5 aficionado
Man in the High Castle is a great scifi series imo

@HornOKPlease ^^
Always amusing to see actors from one series in another
Also it's been 20 years since the last proper b5 episode first aired 00

7:47 AM
@JourneymanGeek *

*?
..... Oh....
I wish I hadn't seen that ;p

So... how many of you have dealt with problems in user-mode software due to some obscure feature related to a specific system's hardware or drivers?
This Firefox sensor API hang made very little sense until I paid close attention to the JS console.

When I tried to play Skyrim on my not-good-enough PC, the cart at the start sorta just flew away...
then the game crashed.

Oo
Fus roh doooooooom?

8:33 AM
oooooooo

9:13 AM
morning
@MichaelFrank that sounds normal for bethesda

@Burgi Certainly in recently released games.

i've heard fallout 76 is awful
@HornOKPlease the book is awful
i'm not on a downer today but i have hurt my shoulder

Oh. Relaxed
Tomorrow will be a loooooooog day though

10:18 AM
You're doing miltiary stuff, right?
Or did I imagine that >_<

10:34 AM
@ThatBrazilianGuy stuff round here is getting a lil' scary
16 yr old stabbed due to being in the wrong postcode (ok, it's a crappy area but still... :/ )
Amazon driver ends up in coma from Van Jacking

10:55 AM
@djsmiley2k Its classified...

k :)

@JourneymanGeek Classified as military stuff? :P

He can just say I imagined it.
:d

@MichaelFrank I could tell you but then I'd have to kill you
On the bright side
I got comms cord and I have a replacement swiss knife in case I manage to break my old one.

@JourneymanGeek lmao

11:09 AM
now I need a white paint marker and a magnet.... or two...

@djsmiley2k i like how his sister has the same name has he did

11:27 AM
the lolly sticks for dib dabs are rubbish these days

11:41 AM
SPEAK ENGLISH MAN!

the sticks they use for the lollipops in sherbet dib-dabs are rubbish and go bendy immediately

@Burgi are they made of paper?

possibly
it might be compressed paper or something

@Burgi yeah.....
When I first saw it on facebook (few days ago before the news was on all the sites) I was like... wait, wut
@Burgi using paper would work nicely, if they sugar water saturated it
so it'd go hard, and strong and long
(THATS WHAT SHE SAID).

@Burgi its more "environmentally friendly"
plastic straws are apparently bad for the environment

11:56 AM
/me nods
sarcastically.
Tho, as a kid, I don't think dibdabs had plastic straws
!! s/straws/sticks/

@djsmiley2k That didn't make much sense. Use the !!/help command to learn more.
@djsmiley2k Tho, as a kid, I don't think dibdabs had plastic sticks (source)

12:17 PM
Sigh
I do hope that the ICO actually uses the new fines enabled by GDPR
as Uber got fined for a leak that happened prior to that
57m people, fined £347k for a grand total of 0.6p per person.

the ICO were the first people in europe to level a GDPR fine against someone
iirc it was like a week after the go live date

hi
can anyone help me with an Ubuntu problem?

have you tried asking on askubuntu?

12:34 PM
meh ubuntu D:
I'm not even sure if they use pulse anymore, or something else entirely
Also holy crap, risc motherboards less than a grand

they use pulseaudio still
@djsmiley2k power!
actually slightly cooler.

Power9, to be exact

also a quarter the price of the first gen models, and I think they use commodity ECC ddr3

@djsmiley2k O.o

so might take the regular sort.

12:42 PM
will it run crisis?
@ThatBrazilianGuy Indeed.

probably not unless they port it

Not featured: the random stories on facebook which are likely true, and also scary.

Let's all buy an island and found the great country of Stackia

Bob
@djsmiley2k It probably runs DOOM

Collaborative, wiki-style democracy!

Bob
12:45 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy No swearing!
CoC!
@ThatBrazilianGuy All new laws implemented in 6-to-8 weeks!

@Bob everything runs doom

your watch probably runs doom

@Bob Island? Country? Great? Buy?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ...It does

@Bob All requests ignored while we get MOAR FUNDING
And start scandals over tweets
In other words, nothing changes.

:/
@ThatBrazilianGuy I don't expect any new twitter related drama
And I think/hope they realised the community needs a boost.

1:01 PM
@JourneymanGeek I was referencing a certain democracy with Twitter dramas.

I know

ffs
the channel 4 ondemand player crashed and now i have to sit through another 5 minutes of bloody adverts

1:26 PM
@Burgi not by accident...
802.11ay (draft) 60 GHz ~ 40 Gbps
Isn't that going to be incredibly short range?

@djsmiley2k maybe, unless they do bouncy bouncy reflecty calculations like millimeter wave 5G is planning to do
"beamforming"

@djsmiley2k yup
though AY capable cards are cheap. Just that I've never seen antenna that do all 3 bands
or even just 60ghz

2:02 PM
have many poppy seeds would you have to eat to get stoned?

far too many

is this like getting chocolate poisoning and dying?

dying is easy

dying is convenient

Dying purely by eating too much chocolate, isn't.

2:16 PM
its finding a chocolate bar large enough to squash you that is the problem

@djsmiley2k It is, if you're @JourneymanGeek

@rahuldottech chocolate is toxic to humans

@rahuldottech unsure if because woof, or because anti-moomoo.

@djsmiley2k cuz woof

2:17 PM
ah ok

@Burgi A Healthy Toxic

weird how a small amount of ice cream can cause me problems
but I litterally eat tons of chocolate, never an issue

(Oh! Name of my new track! Out in five minutes!)

"out in five minutes" ?
that's a good name

@Burgi basically the stuff that makes you stoned is actually in the immature plant

2:18 PM
I have a castor oil plant in the front garden
it's now got seed pods. I'm semi tempted to harvest them and find out what I'd have to do...

@djsmiley2k not that weird, ice cream has loads of milk proteins and lactose in it, even milk chocolate has a lot less by weight.

@ToxicFrog hhhmm ok
:)

Like, I'm lactose intolerant, I can eat as much dark chocolate as I want and decent amounts of milk chocolate but a single ice cream cone without medication will have me praying for death

i can't eat icecream, it hurts my teeth

@djsmiley2k if you're going to make oil do not heat them

2:26 PM
@JourneymanGeek castor beans are used in ricsin production

wait. You're supposed to hot process them?
crap

WHOOOOOO! MORE UNIVERSAL TRACKING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2:41 PM
@JourneymanGeek :D
@ToxicFrog I'm not quite that intolerant, but a large bowl of icecream can leave me stuck in a toilet for a few hours.
@Burgi don't start about painful teeth plz :P
This is so weird,. how did my gum suddenly get better, seemingly overnight?!
I mean I did brush it really quite hard, because I thought there was more bone coming out
(there wasn't).
And it bled....
maybe I caused the healing process to restart or something.

Bob
3:05 PM
@rahuldottech more broken websites!
@ToxicFrog lactase! :D

we are still slowly rolling out v2
weirdly some customers aren't happy when they don't see the CAPTCHA
we trialled the invisible CAPTCHA

3:22 PM
I love how that absolutely doesn't tell you what customers will see/experience.

Bob
3:37 PM
Hm. Possibility of repcap overnight :)
naptime!
@Burgi Isn't v1 long disabled now?

they had something called invisible captcha

4:39 PM
both!

1 hour later…
@bwDraco I spent $200 more per SSD for TLC ones (860 EVO 4 TB)
same capacity though... wake me up when the "QVO" has an 8TB model :P

Agreed.
And I really hope 2-bit MLC doesn't disappear altogether.
(even if priced out of the reach of most consumers, there are still lots of enthusiasts who want MLC)

@bwDraco what's MLC?

2 days ago, by bwDraco
Then there's the type of NAND. There's SLC, MLC, TLC, and QLC (from better to worse in terms of endurance and performance). (SLC is no longer commercially available, and MLC is very expensive.) Planar NAND is simply a flat layer of memory cells, 3D NAND uses newer manufacturing technology to stack many layers of memory cells, one on top of another, allowing higher performance, endurance, and density.
10
A: Why do SSD sectors have limited write endurance?

bwDracoNearly all consumer SSDs use a memory technology called NAND flash memory. The write endurance limit is due to the way flash memory works. Put simply, flash memory operates by storing electrons inside an insulating barrier. Reading a flash memory cell involves checking its charge level, so to re...

5:59 PM
@bwDraco ooh I'll read in a bit

@rahuldottech I've written a lot on SSDs. You might want to see all my answers: superuser.com/search?q=user%3A73918+is%3Aa+[ssd]

6:19 PM
@Bob @bwDraco: Practical test with stock clocks, GTX 2080 Ti (3x internal fan, no impeller), 8700K, Adaptec 81605ZQ RAID: GPU core temp between 70-77C, 45-55% GPU utilization, actual power draw around 120W (46% of TDP), 95-100 FPS solid in ESO at 3440x1440@100Hz; max settings with AA and HBAO. RAID card stabilized at 70C. Added a single-slot PCIe impeller directly beneath the RAID card's heatsink and filled in an empty 80mm case fan slot with a Noctua.

Wow.

I think it must be on a slightly improved fab process compared to the 1080, because 120W of power would not give me anywhere near this level of frame stability in ESO with my 1080
and GPU utilization would be 80% or higher consistently

It is an enhanced process. They're using a customized TSMC 12nm process. The 10 series cards used 16nm.

ahhhh

Again... I'm not quite ready to upgrade.

6:22 PM
I hope my added cooling is enough for the extra heat if it ends up consuming as much power as it can consume at the high end at max TDP. I'm almost afraid of frying my RAID card if I ran it up to 250W with a benchmark or stress test

There's half a node's worth of process improvement there but I'm lacking the funding to make this upgrade and it's not exactly a massive improvement from a GTX 1080 Ti for $1000+.

yeah it's pretty minor to upgrade from the 1080 Ti
from the 1080, videocardbenchmark told me it was a ~33% perf boost

(RTX 2080 Ti is ~30-35% faster than the GTX 1080 Ti)

though I'm getting even better than that, oddly
and it's still running on 8x Gen3 :P

Now, you have some rather unusual storage requirements as well, but I'm running a more conventional high-capacity setup.
(2.5 TB in three drives, including 1 TB of NVMe flash for boot and applications)

6:25 PM
I recently cut out a terabyte of downloaded games that I never play, figuring, gigabit fiber - if I want a game that isn't installed, I download it
although Steam only delivers about 150 Mbps most times because their CDN is not all that good
or throttled

I get sustained 240 Mbps during Steam downloads, as fast as my Internet connection allows.
(200/10 HFC cable Internet)

I'm going to try Unigine Superposition - I'm terrified, but it'll at least inform me whether I need to work on cooling more

You can always try a different server.

I have

I might actually run FurMark, with extreme burn mode and Post FX enabled. This will cause the card to run up to its power limit.
You can probably increase the limit beyond the card's nominal spec, up to a particular hard limit (my card has a nominal 280W TBP but can go up to 330W; it's very rare for the card to actually hit this limit except under extreme stress testing)
(TBP = total board power, including memory and other parts)

6:34 PM
cries in generation n-4
Or whatever it is I have

Holy crap! Superposition benchmark: GPU utilization 98-99%, 3440x1440 fullscreen borderless, all effects enabled, shaders and textures up to "High", min FPS 47, average 63, max 79, GPU temp slowly built up to 88C :S

(and will even go up to 358W on the OC BIOS, which I don't normally use)

I don't think I have enough cooling to consistently run a 2080 Ti at max utilization :(

Ow.

fortunately, the hot GPU exhaust barely affected the core temp of the RAID-on-Chip processor
it went from 71 to 72, and it's rated up to 100C

6:37 PM
My system can handle a graphics card pumping 350+ W into the case, but barely.

this GPU is inefficient at idle :P 64W consumed to render Firefox

At the GPU, per GPU-Z?
I get closer to 15-20W at idle.

yeah, per GPU-Z

Do the fans completely spin down at low temps?

something is using between 1 and 5% of GPU utilization but I assume that's DWM
oh hell no; the "low" temp is 62 C / 60% fan speed
probably need another egress fan on the top of the case, I think I have room for another 120mm

6:39 PM
Ow. That's definitely not ideal.

the impeller design works so much better for my case

My card's fans completely stop and the GPU stays under 50 °C under most non-gaming conditions.

yeah well I have a squishy MicroATX case :P

Heh.
But 60W at idle is really bad. Turing, as powerful as it is, definitely seems half-baked.

6:42 PM
Got a big fat full tower here.

does that top fan look like 120mm?
(I have two 80mm on the back above the PCIe slots)

@bwDraco I know, I've read a few :)

Okay so I'm going offline for a few days
##afk does this work

@rahuldottech Good luck.

6:44 PM
@bwDraco thanks
##afk too much studies to do :/

@HornOKPlease That looks like 120mm to me.

thought so
the spacing is weird though
I don't think I could fit 3 of them
could I fit another 80mm and a 120mm up top? :P

(on Astaroth: 2x140mm intakes, 1x140mm rear exhaust, 240mm CLLC configured as exhaust in the top)
I'm planning to replace the liquid cooler with a 280mm unit (H115i RGB Platinum) when I replace the processor with a third-gen Ryzen chip in 2019.
When the processor is replaced, the liquid cooler will go with it.

7:05 PM
@HornOKPlease: Black Box Data Reveals Pilots’ Struggle to Regain Control of Doomed Jet nyti.ms/2DNLLd6
(does anyone else here have a New York Times subscription?)

@bwDraco I did last year
@bwDraco :(
the scary part about that story for me is that I actually played through that exact "what if" scenario (of the computer going awry and trying to nose down) in my head when I heard of that "feature"
and the B787 has that too

7:20 PM
Ow.

7:32 PM
FFS misses is our babysitting for a friend and the kids won't go to sleep

8:28 PM
well one is asleep now at least.

8:52 PM
That StarTech USB 3.1 Gen 2 enclosure is awesome enough that I actually got a second one for my (currently unused) Samsung SSD 850 EVO. Just like the one used for the 850 PRO and connected to this laptop, it supports TRIM and pushed upwards of 550 MB/s sequential reads.
Oct 28 '17 at 6:48, by Bob
Also have... 250 GB Trion 100, 500 GB Trion 150, 120 GB older Intel. So, yea, plenty. But wanting to add a 1 TB with decent sustained sequential for videocaps :P
Oct 28 '17 at 6:50, by Bob
That's not including the pyramid of externals though :P
Oct 28 '17 at 6:50, by Bob
Literally. A pyramid. I ran out of desk space.

9:08 PM
Now I have two visually identical enclosures with different drives in them :\
The 850 EVO has been secure-erased (again) after testing and presently has no data on it.

Still not sleep
@bwDraco Sharpie, sticker?
#sendhelp

I don't want to ruin that beautiful brushed-aluminum finish :p

Pfffft. Stuff.

@djsmiley2k Give them a nice cup of warm milk.. with a valium crumbled into it? :P

Over come your desire for physical things

9:14 PM

@bertieb lol

I discovered a way to set the charging target voltage on my phone \o/
Sep 17 '17 at 18:40, by bwDraco
Set voltage from 3.6V to 4.5V (but don't overcharge!) in 20 mV increments by echoing the desired voltage in mV to /sys/class/power_supply/battery/voltage_max. Before proceeding, read out the default value from that file so you know what the stock max voltage is. Don't overcharge--you don't want your phone to go the way of the Galaxy Note7.

10:28 PM
definitely insufficient airflow - opened my case, pointed a fan at it and the temps don't hit 80

Unsurprising. On Astaroth, opening the chassis only drops temperatures a few degrees.
And under most workloads, the card won't exceed 75.
(though as presently configured, the intake fans get pretty loud when the room is hot and the system is under sustained load)
...as for that fall injury four days ago, it's healing as expected and should not interfere with my next driving lesson tomorrow morning.
Nov 24 at 7:09, by bwDraco
...welp. Slipped and fell (or should I say, slid) down a flight of stairs. I'm not seriously injured or anything, but briefly felt briefly dizzy, probably due to the repeated impacts.
I've been on painkillers (combination of paracetamol and ibuprofen the last few days) and dressing the abrasion wounds each day.
Just trying not to overwork my body as it heals.

11:39 PM
@bwDraco gaffer tape!
Or a postit

I actually do have a roll of gaffer tape on hand.
Or... since only one of the two units is in active use, there will be distinctive wear patterns.
Acetaminophen (paracetamol) has so many different names.
