Now, AMD has the advantage of SMT (the i5-7600K does not have Hyper-Threading) but that this is even possible is almost unthinkable.

Intel's latest mobile processors (8th gen, Kaby Lake Refresh) go up to 4C/8T so this will be an interesting one to look at.

...got a generic store-brand USB 3.0 media reader the other day to use on Astaroth. I'm quite surprised at how well it performs, delivering 87 MB/s read speeds while transferring files to the system's secondary (SATA) SSD. (128 GB SanDisk Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-I card)

I originally expected to pay closer to $30-50 for a good media reader—turns out high-speed SD card readers are quite a bit cheaper than that these days.

It has SD, microSD, and even CF slots.

That might be its rating but doesn't mean it can't sustain higher when given the cooling.

@Bob There does seem to be a cooling advantage for the Ryzen machine - I'm thinking it might be biased.

The chip does have cTDP in a 12.5 W to 25 W range.

Even if the chip is running at 25W, this is still very impressive (though the Intel Core i7-7700T scores a bit higher at 35W according to AnandTech)

I think the biggest and most critical aspect of this is that we finally have a mobile chip from AMD that has both fast CPU cores and a fast IGP.

(Intel processors with Iris graphics are almost as powerful from a graphical standpoint, but they're very expensive and aren't common)

Raven Ridge has 11 Vega NCUs on the die, of which 10 are enabled on the Ryzen 7 2700U.

Either way, you are looking at a chip that performs like one of those Iris Pro parts, if not better, yet probably is far cheaper.

Toshiba's BiCS3 FLASH (64-layer 3D TLC NAND) is quite a remarkable performer.

@Bob It's a hard call - most lower-grade TLC NAND SSDs cannot maintain this kind of speed, but the better drives are not much more these days.

Unfortunately, all SSDs are rather expensive due to the NAND shortage. Things have improved slightly in recent months but prices are still high.

I'd actually say that the SanDisk Ultra 3D (or the nearly identical WD Blue 3D NAND) is your best bet.

I actually ran into issues during Windows installation as a result because Windows treated the SATA SSD as the first drive in the machine. I wound up having to erase the Ultra 3D (using the secure erase function in the ASUS BIOS); physically disconnect the drive; reinstall Windows on the 960 PRO; and reattach, partition, and format the Ultra 3D again.

@Bob I could not distinguish between the two disks. They had nearly identical capacities and the installer only gave "Disk 0" and "Disk 1".

Also, lesson learned: Do not partition more than one drive when installing Windows. The installer might place the bootloader on one drive and the system on the other drive, because when you create a partition, the installer assumes that the drive you've selected is the drive you're going to install Windows on.

One of those things that just amazes me about this desktop is how responsive it is. Apps launch quickly. Web pages load in a split second. Everything just feels faster.

My instinct tells me it's the NVMe SSD that's the biggest factor, though I also suppose that the Ryzen processor (which has a Speed Shift-like feature IIRC) is also part of the reason.

Photo editing is also sooooo much faster on Astaroth. I no longer have to wait a whole second for the image preview to update every time I make a change. This means I can be more productive than before.

@bwDraco confirmation bias is going to have an effect here as well.

It's probably having a newer processor than anything AMD specific. That and you've not got a ton of crap programs bogging the system down.

I want my new phone to be faster than my old one, and it is, but the tests are biased. I'm using the built in WebShit-based browser rather than Firefox so of course that's faster because Firefox runs like a three legged dog on Android.

It's easy to see improvements when you aren't completely fair about the testing.
