12:07 AM
@Bob: ordered this enclosure, which should support TRIM:
My old 850 PRO has been sitting in a generic enclosure without TRIM support. Time to put it in something better.
USB 3.1 Gen 2.
(though the only systems in this house that support the faster USB standard are Astaroth and my father's desktop)
USB 3.1 Micro-B connector, but that's not an issue for me.
> 1 - 7mm - 9.5mm SSD spacer
Great. I don't have to stuff the enclosure with paper to fill the gap.
ASMedia ASM1351 controller, the same as the one in my mSATA enclosure for the swap SSD used on Bifrons, and known to support TRIM. Fantastic.

I hate GDPR dialogs.
Sep 22 at 14:25, by bwDraco
Seriously... GDPR sucks.
(see context)

@bwDraco ... isn't gdpr a good thing?

It's too burdensome for small businesses and many end users.

> It contains a citizen-suit provision, which will result in lawyers actively seeking out businesses and suing those that are noncompliant for fun and profit.
While privacy is important, GDPR goes too far and is a huge burden especially on small businesses.

That's exactly why.

@bwDraco it's really not that hard to be GDPR compliant. Most of it is just... Don't collect a stupid amount of data which has nothing to do with the business, and tell us what you do collect and let us see what info you have on us

1:47 AM
How does a random lawyer profit from suing a non-compliant business?
Don't they need standing to sue
?

And I don't see how it's burdensome on end users at all.

And here I am, complaining about the GDPR prompt in Candy Crush Saga.
:P

We're living in a scary time. I'd much, much rather be inconvenienced a little rather than have all these companies collecting all my data
Data, which mind you, they have absolutely no reason to be collecting in the first place and
Any website which has to block you off due to GDPR is a website you should be running the hell away from in any case
Why the hell does a local news website need to know so much about me? Why does a video game?
Hell, companies like Google can just ask you once what you're into and serve relevant ads, rather than track you every. damn. where.

People get shown irrelevant ads, complain about irrelevance
People get shown relevant ads, complain about too much tracking
People get shown no ads, complain that they have to pay to get content

GDPR takes steps to protect our privacy, and it's miraculous that they managed to pass it in the first place in today's age.
@bertieb just ask what I'm into. Give me an option to tell you if an ad is irrelevant, and then don't show it anymore. Let me tell you what sort of ads I want.
But don't store data on every website which I visit

1:54 AM
@rahuldottech You have to save that information somewhere

@bertieb what I'm into? Sure, save that. But let me tell you.
Don't track me across the web is all I'm saying

And privacy-conscious people generally don't volunteer info to megacorps

So then they can give false information
My point exactly

Which is pretty pointless for everyone inolved

@bertieb even now you can opt out of targeted ads

1:55 AM
I think the argument from El Goog goes "we can figure out what you want from your browsing habits better than you can yourself"

Which is what everyone seems to have a problem with
So stop.

HAMMERTIME!

if someone's in the market for, I dunno, a drill; they're not going to log into a google ad preferences page to indicate an interest in drills
But if someone is searching "how to put up shelves" "how to make a pilot hole" "masonry bits" (etc) it would be reasonable to show them drill-related ads
There are a lot of holes in the assumption, but it's a very basic example
@rahuldottech People also put minutia of their lives on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter; wherever
So it's a complex relationship
I'm on the privacy side of things, FWIW

@rahuldottech Ad networks already allow you to tell them an ad is irrelevant to you. Google certainly does.

Just, mining data makes a lot of businesses (and their employees, execs, and shareholders) a whole ton of money
And people like to reap the benefits of that, in the form of good search, free email, YT (!), the list goes way on
I'm not sure how you divorce the two
I shudder to think what a service like YT would actually cost...

2:05 AM
Heck or even SE

@MichaelFrank I know it does. It also tracks me. It should do away with that bit.
@bertieb no. It's not reasonable. That's literally what everyone has a problem with.
You show me ads on building supplies if I tell you to.

@JourneymanGeek Right?

Or if I click on ads related to something once, you can learn to show me more ads of that thing
I'm not asking you to not show me ads related to stuff I like. I'm asking you to stop tracking me.

@rahuldottech Then you run into the "toilet seat collection" issue

@bertieb I don't know what that is. Elaborate?

2:10 AM
@rahuldottech Amazon
2 ticks

@bertieb you don't have to be stupid
You, as in the ad delivery platform
Not you, specifically ;p

If I click on an ad for a toilet seat, it doesn't mean that I need to continue buying them.

@bertieb think of it this way. First, you just ask me what I'm into. You show me ads about it. If I don't click on ads regarding something, just stop showing me ads about it. Show me ads about something else? If I'm responsive and how interest in something, show me ads on that topic

2:12 AM
That's still tracking you.

The Toilet Collection Problem exists only because Amazon is stupid

They still need to track what ads you clicked on.
It's alllll tracking.

Ya. AliExpress does that. Occasionally links stuff that's mysterious... Like an rj9 to 3.5mm male adapter...

@MichaelFrank sure, do that. Figure out what I like. But don't track what websites I visit

@rahuldottech I wish more people did think like this, but I have very found few privacy-oriented folks in the wild

2:13 AM
@JourneymanGeek I'm still trying to figure out why AliExpress started suggesting "not-for-sex toys" to me... o.O

@bertieb people don't know about this stuff

We are a... pretty niche selection of people here in RA (in more ways than one :P)

@MichaelFrank really should go back to just showing those sex toys you keep buying, right? ;P

Most people will happily trade convenience for privacy

@rahuldottech I've tried in the past to proselytise
^^ is the response I tend to get
@JourneymanGeek Yup

2:15 AM
But yanno? Google knows where I am

Or trade privacy for security

They know which shops I've been to

@JourneymanGeek that's because people don't know. They won't till one day they wake up, and realize what it's all come to. But it'll be too. goddamned. late. And no matter how much we try, people will not know, because of how much influence these companies have.
@JourneymanGeek but! they! shouldn't!
It's messed up, man.

People do know, they just don't care
People know they should exercise more, eat less crap, watch less TV, spend more quality time people people they care about

@bertieb because they don't know the consequences. They just know that they're tracked.

2:16 AM
What are the consequences?
Of any of those?

Relevant ads are the consequence.

@rahuldottech they care about the aggregate

"At some point in the future, something bad might happen", generally-speaking

Something most certainly will

Jan 20 '17 at 4:52, by bwDraco
I see this happen all the time. I buy a product, and I get ads for the same product. Problem is that they can't quite tell if you've actually bought the product or not through the advertising system.

2:17 AM
It messed with my head, man

Humans are pretty bad at long-term decision making

@bwDraco they're stupid. When they see you not clicking, they should just stop.

HAMMERTIME!

Wtf is with @ChatBotJohnCavil lately

The problem is, the general consumer base is no longer willing to pay for every single service. The middle class is squeezed more than ever.

2:18 AM
@rahuldottech I guess the question is ... How far are you willing to go?

@rahuldottech If you say stop at the end of a sentence, he does that. Stop.

HAMMERTIME!

@rahuldottech Maybe they should track more to see if the product has been bought :P
Halt!

HAMMERZEIT!

I'll tell you what's scary.

2:19 AM
Getting older?

How much influence these online corporations have

Well, that too

You have the skills. Are you going to... Idk, run replicant and run all alternative applications?

Jul 26 '17 at 13:08, by bwDraco
@ThatREDACTEDGuy The economy is crap and consumers aren't buying stuff, so companies are resorting to other ways to maintain a revenue stream and satisfy shareholders.

2:19 AM
I'm not.

@JourneymanGeek I did that for a while (running my own services); it gets old fast
And outdated fast
And vulnerable fast
And downtime fast
And a full time job fast

And then you need to contact your aunt and they only use Snapchat and... then you're back on the grid.

Yea

@bertieb precisely
Or maybe generate a load of noise...

It did!
Computer fans are loud, man

2:25 AM
But that gets you the weird ads

So. What we learnt today, kids, is that there's no way out, we're doomed, the end is coming fast, Merry Christmas.

In terms of what they have on you
@rahuldottech eh. There's always options

Yeah, but if it makes you feel any better, remember that the downfall of civilisation has been predicted to be "any day now" since about as long as we've had civilisation

@bertieb it's a loop, man.
Okay, here's a thought experiment thingy
Do you believe that democracy needs to incorporate some totalitarian policies to maintain itself?
Case in point:
Democracy gets undermined and destroyed due to people spreading misinformation, which they are able to do because of free speech
I really don't feel like taking names, but look at a certain president who rose to power by undermining the press, lying, making false promises.
They were able to rise to power because everything they said was protected by democratic principles
And now, they're the one destroying democracy
Spreading misinformation and undermining the basic pillars like the press and free speech, because of which they rose to power.
I do believe that democracy is better than any other form of government we've ever had. But man, it's not good enough.
It's flawed and unstable.
One particularly bothering aspect is that those in power are supposed to be representing the people. But they don't have to be credible to us. They're elected on trust. That they'll do what they promised to. But if they don't, then... We're screwed. Who is going to govern the government?
A corporation comes along, hands them cash and boom! All principles go straight outta the door.
I've been thinking, and I can't figure it out. How do you protect democracy? From what I see, you can't. It's a vicious circle. Democracy will get destroyed. Then people will struggle and fight for centuries to establish it again. And then it'll just all get destroyed again.

2:46 AM
@bertieb Clarify?

@bwDraco fans. Those things which create airflow?

What model fans?

It's a general statement, man.
I can't even afford branded fans

3:17 AM
Can we avoid this subject. Where one might think one side is destroying democracy others might think that side is protecting it.
That is an accurate statement for both sides. So let’s keep everyone happy and not talk about it

@Ramhound "He seems to be giving each side crap. I can appreciate that." twitter.com/SatoshiLite/status/981100312118288384

I am not reading it that way.
Calling out one side, and not the other, clearly not giving both sides grief

I was just talking to you Ramhound, I liked your comment, I did not read enough of the others. Busy room.

Ok, was confused by your statement no harm done

I'm reviewing close votes for the first time, do I leave something like this open? superuser.com/review/close/806743
IMO, it's not out of scope. It's someone asking what a feature or component of Windows does

It should stay open. It's a Windows software component, part of the Bluetooth stack.

@bwDraco Yep, that's what I did
hey @JourneymanGeek how da rifle shootin' goin'?

5:52 AM
No shooting :p

Actually we're not supposed to discuss what we do lol

@JourneymanGeek But you can tell us what you don't do
So all we have to do is ask you what you don't do, and the one you stay silent about...
;P

I totally did not fight a tiger unarmed

@Bob you'll get there again
... eventually
Very, very, very eventually
But yeah
> visited 855 days, 7 consecutive

Bob
6:12 AM
@rahuldottech not really

@Bob y not plz dont die

Bob
short of convincing a SE dev to edit the db (hmmmmm) there's no way to get the full streak back :(
there will always be that one break

@Bob do it!
@Bob yeah, but you can get a really big number again

Bob
@rahuldottech it's not the same :(

@Bob let's spam then admin then
Oh, also

6:14 AM
My missed day was my brother's wedding 🙄

@JourneymanGeek I may... uh, get drunk tonight (trying alcohol for the first time). Kick me out if I come online and say something stupid, although I don't think I will

Bob
lul
you'll vomit before you get truly drunk

v. v. v. probably
Ok, questions
How do you drink vodka?
Diluted? In what ratio?
> Choose a plain vodka to drink.
Throw your bottle of vodka in the freezer for a few hours.
Pour the vodka into a small glass.
Sip vodka, don't shoot it.
Eat appetizers between sips.
Hmmmm. No diluting in soda?

@rahuldottech I probably won't be available

@JourneymanGeek well, pin this:
@MODS: I WILL GET DRUNK TONIGHT BAN ME IF I SAY ANYTHING STUPID

Bob
6:23 AM
@rahuldottech ...why are you starting with vodka?
that sounds like a horrible idea
the traditional first alcohol is either wine or beer

@Bob Because I have some. What should I start with?

Bob
cider if you don't like the bitterness of beer
something with a low alcohol concentration

@Bob I... don't think you get cider here.

Bob
if you're doing vodka, you'd probably want it in a mixer

@Bob what's a mixer?

Bob
6:24 AM
straight vodka? you'll probably not even swallow it
like, I fully expect you to cough it straight back up

@Bob Yeah, not going to do it straight

Bob
high alcohol concentrations burn

@Bob Vodka+Sprite+Ice is ok?

Bob
eh
I wouldn't like it
but at the end of the day everyone's alcohol preference is personal taste

Okay, well. This is just me experimenting. Let's see.

Bob
6:26 AM
I'd suggest trying a decent beer before anything distilled, mixer or not

@Bob I tried a few sips. I hated it.

Bob
lol
try cider if you can

Also tried a sip of peach wine. Well, I tried to try a sip. The smell stopped me.

Mobile UI lok
Lol

6:37 AM
@rahuldottech if you really want to try a mixer, I suggest a light (watered down?) fruit juice. citrus (esp. lemon, pineapple) are nice
some people like it with soft drinks
sprite ... sounds nasty tbh

@Bob As in the juice you get in tetra-paks or like home-made?

Bob
@rahuldottech the former, kinda. but fresh tastes better

@Bob whoo okay, thanks!

Bob
kinda depends how strong you want the flavours to be, how pulpy...
start small!
and mixers are just a way to get drunk with something sweet :P not so much for tasting the alcohol
be careful. it can hit quite strongly after a bit.
measure out 1 standard drink, and leave at least 10 mins (maybe 30 is better) between drinks so you know how it feels as it hits
it's faster with an empty stomach and slower with food

@Bob cool
I have a 50ML bottle of Absolut

Bob
6:41 AM
uhhh

I was going get more, but...

Bob
% ABV?

Bob
ok, 50mL of 40% is a hair under 2 standard drinks
so you'd probably be fine with all of that in one go

@Bob Yeah, but there's two of us, me and a friend.

Bob
6:42 AM
yea if you split that evenly that's basically nothing :P

lol, okay then

Bob
I think it's actually legal to drive here (your BAC is below legal limit) after just one standard drink (and 1 hour?) - depending on how your body processes it of course
yea you'd probably not hit the 0.05 limit for driving in AU

2 hours later…
8:51 AM
yeah, but with no tolerance...
Also, be aware if you're sat there drinking for long periods
you may not realise how drunk you are, until to attempt to stand up

morning

@Bob Jeez... Going straight for the hard stuff ha

And it won't be good vodka either

@rahuldottech Yep... That's pretty much how to do it. Also, drink it out of a mug, or measuring cup... cause that's probably the only clean vessel in the house ha
That's how we did it anyway.
Russian Standard or not at all!

9:10 AM
Okay listen
I got a 650ml bottle
Of 5.5% beer
This is good enough for the first time, right?

@MichaelFrank pfft
I have a beaker

9:37 AM
Ok I also got vodka.

@rahuldottech go slowly with it

Bob
@djsmiley2k I find shaking my head now and then helps. When the room starts spinning... :P
@djsmiley2k tbh I think even with no tolerance you wouldn't really feel 1 std drink

lol

Bob
@rahuldottech ~3 std drinks. yea that'd get you feeling it
as @Burgi said, go slow :P

@rahuldottech also pour it out into a glass, hold the glass at an angle and don't fill the glass to the top

9:51 AM
@Burgi Okay
Thanks, ya'll
Let's see how this goes

10:23 AM
I've never drunk booze before.
That said, beer is really good for your hair

@JourneymanGeek how

@rahuldottech I'm an observant, orthodox bramin a dog

@JourneymanGeek ah.

Probably the wrong question
lots of people don't drink

10:38 AM
Yeah, sorry.

How I know beer's good for hair...
now that's a more interesting question

10:58 AM
beer is great at killing waterbourne diseases
basically the process of making it involves boiling and the weak (relatively) alcohol content help kill any remaining bactria

@JourneymanGeek beer shampoo is a thing here
I've used it a couple times at a friend's place. Smells bad.
@Burgi can you mix beer with juices to improve the taste?

Bob
...that's what cider is for
beer is so weak you can't really 'mix' it with anything

11:15 AM
@Bob lol, let's see. I don't know what the one I bought tastes like

11:30 AM
@rahuldottech no....

11:42 AM
I'm iffy about encouraging underaged drinking... ;p
but a good hangover....

I'm almost 18...
@JourneymanGeek lol

I've totally had a few days when I've had something like a hangover...

12:02 PM
i thought you were 18
drinking is always better with friends
and you WILL make yourself VERY ill at some point

12:46 PM
Would it be ok to ask on this site how to get Dropbox working on a computer with only a network drive?
I know it's not a supported configuration, but I really need it
