@bwDraco it's really not that hard to be GDPR compliant. Most of it is just... Don't collect a stupid amount of data which has nothing to do with the business, and tell us what you do collect and let us see what info you have on us
GDPR takes steps to protect our privacy, and it's miraculous that they managed to pass it in the first place in today's age.
@bertieb just ask what I'm into. Give me an option to tell you if an ad is irrelevant, and then don't show it anymore. Let me tell you what sort of ads I want.
But don't store data on every website which I visit
if someone's in the market for, I dunno, a drill; they're not going to log into a google ad preferences page to indicate an interest in drills
But if someone is searching "how to put up shelves" "how to make a pilot hole" "masonry bits" (etc) it would be reasonable to show them drill-related ads
There are a lot of holes in the assumption, but it's a very basic example

@bertieb think of it this way. First, you just ask me what I'm into. You show me ads about it. If I don't click on ads regarding something, just stop showing me ads about it. Show me ads about something else? If I'm responsive and how interest in something, show me ads on that topic
@JourneymanGeek that's because people don't know. They won't till one day they wake up, and realize what it's all come to. But it'll be too. goddamned. late. And no matter how much we try, people will not know, because of how much influence these companies have.
I see this happen all the time. I buy a product, and I get ads for the same product. Problem is that they can't quite tell if you've actually bought the product or not through the advertising system.
@ThatREDACTEDGuy The economy is crap and consumers aren't buying stuff, so companies are resorting to other ways to maintain a revenue stream and satisfy shareholders.

Case in point:
Democracy gets undermined and destroyed due to people spreading misinformation, which they are able to do because of free speech
I really don't feel like taking names, but look at a certain president who rose to power by undermining the press, lying, making false promises.
They were able to rise to power because everything they said was protected by democratic principles
And now, they're the one destroying democracy

I do believe that democracy is better than any other form of government we've ever had. But man, it's not good enough.
It's flawed and unstable.
One particularly bothering aspect is that those in power are supposed to be representing the people. But they don't have to be credible to us. They're elected on trust. That they'll do what they promised to. But if they don't, then... We're screwed. Who is going to govern the government?
A corporation comes along, hands them cash and boom! All principles go straight outta the door.
I've been thinking, and I can't figure it out. How do you protect democracy? From what I see, you can't. It's a vicious circle. Democracy will get destroyed. Then people will struggle and fight for centuries to establish it again. And then it'll just all get destroyed again.

I think it's actually legal to drive here (your BAC is below legal limit) after just one standard drink (and 1 hour?) - depending on how your body processes it of course
