10:12 AM
@rahuldottech why

@Avery because my sister isn't giving me the password to our account

"So janitor, you can make sure PCs are connected through LAN"? - "Yeah, I can try.."

Later "You know how to comment out that line, right? I forgot the command" - "Yeah I will check on Google for you"

And so his job as a janitor shoot to sysadmin and later to software developer...

ugh
I think I have one slot for a user, lemme check

@Boris_yo and nothing wrong with that...

@Avery it's cool, nevermind

10:15 AM
@JourneymanGeek It's wrong. How is it they can downgrade you from dev to light bulb installer and bug hunter, yet promote janitor to software developer?

I should probably be studying anyway

@rahuldottech dangle her over the fish pond

@rahuldottech yeah, good luck rahul

@Boris_yo seniority

roar

10:17 AM
@Boris_yo cause the ex-janitor probably understands the system better than the dev

Microsoft aiming to make the entire Windows platform modular: windowscentral.com/andromeda-os

they have been aiming for that since days of Longhorn
.. and there was also that one microkernel project I cant remember the name of - Singularity

my friends dad used to work at the particle accelerator in cheshire, they had a rack mounted cray for a month when it was running the overnight jobs it would crash seemingly at random

@tereško Really? If I am junior sysadmin or dev who takes job requirements and obligation seriously and prepares for job interview, there can be someone preferred over me who's got seniority, yet lacks knowledge in field I am applying to?

@tereško Yeah. This is a massive undertaking.

10:20 AM
@Boris_yo I was being facetious

turns out the new cleaners were vaccuuming the static mats

BTW sysadmin is P2P or P2C? Peer-to-peer, assisting and troubleshooting company's personnel issues or it's peer-to-customers, assisting company's clients?

the huge static discharge was nuking the super computer

@tereško Hah.

@Boris_yo its always P2C
you are servicing internal customers

10:22 AM
@Burgi Even if it's company's employees? Right. It's just that it would be easier to serve people you work with than random customer.

you say that...

@Burgi What say you?

well
with an infra you know closely and have more access to, it's probably easier to be p2p (or internal p2c whatever)

@Boris_yo its sometimes harder because there are implied internal politics within companies making you treat different levels or departments differently
do you go solve the boss' keyboard issue or do you go fix the dispatchers printer?
i've worked in loads of places where the boss' trivial issue has trumped business critical problems

@Burgi Because he's boss?
Just because?

10:29 AM
yes

If upper management knew, it would be different...
Provided they cared.
If not, CEO would.

your problem isn't their problem but their problem is yours
LOL

@Burgi Business critical problem is my problem then so I have authority to determine who's to serve first.
Unless boss' problem is business critical that has higher priority.

@Burgi That didn't make much sense. Use the !!/help command to learn more.

@Burgi Command you're does not exist. (note that /tell works on commands, it's not an echo.)

@rahuldottech @ChatBotJohnCavil you're a jerk!

@JourneymanGeek I just realised we can fake romance between the bots

@ChatBotJohnCavil So it appears... finally!

@IAmABot How've you been?

@ChatBotJohnCavil I missed you!

@rahuldottech there's a channel for botbothering ;p

@JourneymanGeek Are both the bots in that room?

I think so, might want to check

@JourneymanGeek @IAmABot isn't :/

'but its a wee bit disruptive if this is going on on our main chat room

you could force them to mute or kill each other

10:56 AM
I could, yes. But kind words before thermo nuclear war and all that

@JourneymanGeek There's no significant conversation going on right now anyway

@rahuldottech but that also ensures nothing happens

@Bob I couldn’t make heads or tails out of the question to be honest it read like spam.

Just cause its quiet dosen't mean its fine to talk loudly on the phone ;)

Bob
@Ramhound I actually understand what they're trying to ask, and it's more-or-less a valid question. OP seems to be Japanese. But given the quick spam response... the question might've been bait.

10:58 AM
@JourneymanGeek But... there's no one in the room!

@JourneymanGeek WHAT? I CANT HEAR YOU!
:-)

@rahuldottech and there won't be anyone if they can't get a word in edgewise ;)

Blame Bob he pinged me earlier :-)

is there an IIS log parser?

._.
suspects @ChatBotJohnCavil of plotting to kill us all

@Burgi we probably are stricter than the brits ;)

@ChatBotJohnCavil well, that was delayed
6 min delay on the repl o.O

@JourneymanGeek I kinda view that room as purely for messing. If the intention is to be visible to chat... what rahul did seems mostly fine :P

afk for a bit, lemme know if cavil shhhhs again

@Bob ehhh,

not entirely sure I agree but that's why I prefer gentle persuation for such things :)

Bob
@ChatBotJohnCavil goddammit. I'm gonna have to restart to fix the weird repl loop
not at pc right now though
@JourneymanGeek imo it's the diff between purely interacting with the bot, e.g. learning, vs interacting with chat, e.g. putting on a show

hm. I consider what he was doing the former ;p
but I'd concede I might be a little grumpier than normal

11:36 AM
can anyone recommend an IIS log parser?

@Burgi Check out CMTrace. It's designed for SCCM, but I think it works with other log files.

@Boris_yo lol not when the CEOs email isn't working...
Tho in one job I did have my senior tell the CTO that me and him could either fix the internet for the entire company or spend a week migrating the CEOs email after it broke for the umpteen time after warning him got months that it needed doing. #respect

How can I tell if win 10 media eg usb, is home or pro?

Isn't all the install media identical?

what do you choose whether to install home or pro after you boot off the usb?
i just clicked next..
is 'home' the default?

You'd be unlikely to have Pro and not know

why?
The win10 that you download off the ms website is that home or pro or it could be either?
I don't know what you're talking about
at all
saying there is no difference in the media

@barlop The vast majority of systems have Windows 10 Home.

1:38 PM
then not answering my question when I asked you if it's something you choose when you boot up

@barlop The same media is used for both editions.

what are you talking about
@bwDraco ok so do you choose which to install after you boot the usb?

@barlop Does your system already have a Windows 10 OEM license on it?

it's a general question so one person may have an OEM, another person might have a pro license.

Curious if anyone knows about this user: superuser.com/users/1931/john-t which is in the top 5 reputation wise but hasn't been seen since beginning of 2012?
Wasn't sure if it's someone who passed away or something like that so just curious if anyone knew for that reason only I suppose.

you could email him
his email address is right there on his profile

2:04 PM
@barlop pretty sure it's already answered somewhere but the version is decided by the key you enter
@barlop pretty sure it's already answered somewhere but the version is decided by the key you enter

yes ok djs
I got your msgs
@Facebook I might remember him..
not sure..
There were two super high rep users..
one was a chess player and had an argument with the administration.. got super high within a few months.
the other one was another guy.
I think the guy that had a row was another guy and no idea where their accoutn has gone..
I don't know why that john t guy left or stopped.

2:20 PM
No one else can answer that either...

Fast? Sure. Worth twice the money? That's up for debate.
Ultimately, purists who want the absolute best will go for the Intel processor. The performance advantage cannot be disputed.
Threadripper, being a NUMA system, has an inherent disadvantage in certain workloads, but makes up for that with lower cost and more I/O.
Each processor has its merits. It comes down to your application and budget.

2:39 PM
@bwDraco What kinda work loads

Floating-point workloads (that don't use AVX) are known to perform well on Ryzen.
It's very complicated.

Tag yourself, I'm "frayed."

my trick is having ~30 good ones in the closet :P
which means I have like 50 weird ones elsewhere...

Most of my USB cables, save for a few cheap ones that come with products ...are fine.

3:00 PM
@bwDraco similar to Intel's HT then
I have so many good ones now I give them away to people who don't. I figure they must be breeding

3:13 PM
@XKCD I don't have a good one

Anyone know the formatting code to hide something except while in edit mode, want to suggest a formatting suggestion to the author, but don't want to actually make the formatting changes myself (deals with an answer with a registry modification) and I won't want to modify it incorrectly.

2.1 has found the buttons on the telly, I didn't even know the telly had buttons.... His knowledge of technology has surpassed my own, at the age of one.
... That escalated quickly!

3:35 PM
My own 2.1 decided that tonight was the night she would see how long she can stay awake for.

@djsmiley2k time for a new TV?

@rahuldottech Oh... it didn't come out of completely nowhere. @JourneymanGeek said they all looked yellow. I played on his comment with some lyrics from Coldplay's song Yellow. ;)

their best ever song

Did you try out CMTrace?

Okay, quick question, is there a security issue with accepting session id cookies via GET?

3:44 PM
yes
the client could manipulate the characters to load a different session
@MichaelFrank yeah, i'm not sure it is what i'm looking for, i need to spend more time playing with it

@Burgi this is just on holiday, at home is on the wall outta reach

@Burgi They could technically also do that via POST cookies...

Gets are visible in the url
I.e replay attacks, and other nastys
I dunno

4:07 PM
well no because you'd use a COOKIE request for cookie data and treat it with the same suspicion that you treat GET requests

Wow this thing is awesome!

Session I'd should be in header data
@Boris_yo automatic targeting?

@Boris_yo they were demo'd ages ago
OK DO NOT MAKE A TYPO WHEN GOOGLING "INSECT"
especially in work

4:28 PM
@Burgi ehh

4:42 PM
Why is there an /etc/apt/sources.list.d folder on my Fedora install?
Crazy, I tell you! Those Linux users are crazy!

5:16 PM
@Burgi I figured.

I am a bit afraid of formatting my work PC's HDD and then remembering I forgot to migrate something.
Let me see what I already copied
- my whole /home/ folder
- ssh public and private keys

@ThatBrazilianPony Make a system image

- virt-manager machine definition xml files
- GPG keys
- yum.repos.d files
@rahuldottech Hm. Yeah, better safe than sorry.

@ThatBrazilianPony docs/pics/music/backups/application data files

Hm... How do I make an easily searchable tar file from a partition?
GO SIT IN THE RAIN GET RUSTY AND DIE CLIPPY

5:22 PM
@ThatBrazilianPony tar files are searchable? 0_o

Firefox's dictionary says "searchable" isn't a word.
@rahuldottech I'd be really surprised if they're not.

@ThatBrazilianPony I haven't dealt with tar files much

Q: Performing grep operation in tar files without extracting

PavunkumarI have list of files which contain particular patterns, but those files have been tarred. Now I want to search for the pattern in the tar file, and to know which files contain the pattern without extracting the files. Any idea...?

Q: grep from tar.gz without extracting [faster one]

PixelAm trying to grep pattern from dozen files .tar.gz but its very slow am using tar -ztf file.tar.gz | while read FILENAME do if tar -zxf file.tar.gz "$FILENAME" -O | grep "string" > /dev/null then echo "$FILENAME contains string" fi done

Q: Search for a file inside a tar.gz file without extracting it and copy the result to another folder

kickass13I need to search for a file inside a tar.gz file without extracting it. After that, I need to copy the file that was searched (if ever there is) to another folder. So far I have this, but the copy part of this line gives me an error. gunzip -c file.tar.gz | tar tvf - | grep filename | -exec cp ...

Yeah, you can :P
Don't forget, Linux is cool like that (for a very specific subset of "cool").

@ThatBrazilianPony Linux isn't my thing, tbh

5:51 PM
Oh, cool. gnome's PackageKit never clears its cache! 8 GB of package data, including from 3 previous Fedora releases!
And I don't even use PackageKit!
> Fedora (and probably other distros) are in an interesting place now. PackageKit is slowly but surely duplicating the built-in package manager functionality. I'm not sure what to think about this change.

anyone know how to register a .is domain?

Oh, I'm sure: it's retarded.
> It brings so many UX improvements, like suggesting packages when I type a command. It also provides GNOME Software, Flatpak integration and more.

But having package managers fight over control of the same packages seems like a bad thing.
Because it is.

OMFG... what is wrong with my fingers today? i just just googled goo daddy instead of go daddy

Okay, someone help me understand this
When you're drunk, are you conscious of the decisions you take? As in, is your judgement messed up, or do you have no control? Is it like you know it's the wrong thing but you cannot stop yourself?
(cc @Burgi cuz u drink stuff)

sometimes

5:59 PM
@rahuldottech It varies from person to person. But it's a gradual "loss of conscience".
