Flexible flat cable, or FFC, refers to any variety of electrical cable that is both flat and flexible. A flexible flat cable is a type of flexible electronics. However, the term FFC usually refers to the extremely thin flat cable often found in high-density electronic applications like laptops and cell phones. == Overview == Sometimes the term FPC (flexible printed circuit) is even—somewhat inaccurately—used for any type of FFC, however this is more accurately used to describe circuits that incorporate components and are built onto a flexible material. FFCs are usually straight connections without...

Some questions on SE just make you ask "But why?" This is one. — Criggie 4 hours ago

ugh
this is frustrating
I'm trying to install ubuntu to a VHD for my fancypants drive
and it ALWAYS installs the EFI bits to the main drive
and leaves a mess
and shockingly I don't have any modern systems I can afford to yank the drive out to futz around with this
it even creates an ESP. THEN USES THE ONE ON THE OTHER DISK

Bob
@JourneymanGeek mount the drive in a VM
or do the install manually
debootstrap + a couple grub commands

tried the former. Dosen't work right
ehh.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek lol, want help with the debootstrap method? :P

I'm actually going to try fedora next
;p
I'm at work ..

:( I really need those new drives soon

I have a free day today. So I'm spending it on some quality internetting and some sweet, sweet coding
You know, stuff I usually don't do

there's this girl sitting at the local Starbucks with at least 6 cups of coffee o.O

either she has 5 friends, or really needs to keep from murdering someone

10:38 AM
Or maybe it's one of those coffees that is 95% milk

are you passing through the walls yet?

I actually stopped drinking coffee a while ago. So it's pretty intense

@Bob Good stuff

so, TIL there appears to be a bit of an in-joke with Len[n]a and published papers. And the fact that the original image came from a Playboy magazine (...guess what was cropped out?)

OL_o
that's a question for stack overflow @RogUE
surely o?

@djsmiley2k I know that, But I could not find a general chatroom of SO.

well what you'd likely want to do is ask the question on the main site
I think there is a chatroom for so, but chatrooms aren't really thei deal place for questions
the h bar is quite special in that reguard
anyo90ne know where my usb drive is? :*(

Bob
@djsmiley2k have you tried calling it? :D

2:21 PM
@djsmiley2k This seems to be a trivial question, that's why I haven't yet asked it there.

@Bob LOL
UI've confirmed it's not beside the blind cow, nor on my desk or by the tank.
I'm hoping the wife has it on her keys, I need to get myself one

Bob
@RogUE Well, you can start with Google and then explain why it isn't sufficient. e.g. one of the first results stackoverflow.com/questions/39727436/…

@djsmiley2k the blind cow...?

yus
I was waiting for someone to question that.

- I have incremental backup running 4 times per month, every Saturday.
- I have full incremental backup running 1 time on the 4th week after 4th incremental backup, on Saturday

Question:

Do I need that incremental backup on 4th week when I also run full backup?

S1 - ib, S2- ib, S3- ib, S4 - fb + ib right?
if something blows up on S4+1, what are your options.
Restore full backup, restore incremental.
is restoring icremental faster than full?

No...
It
Is slower.
Wait...
o.0

Do you need the 4th incremental to be able to go back to the 3rd?
The answer btw is yes, make it
because if you need to restore full backup from 2 months ago, and then 1 month ago as well, and you find the 1 month ago one broke some how, you're screwed
but you could restore 2 month old fb+ib1+ib2+ib3+ib4+ib1^1+ib2^1+ib3^1+ib4^1.
at least, that'd be my arguement

Bob
my computer is in flight mode. my desktop computer is in flight mode.

@djsmiley2k t2 tea? Come on, I only peer with tier 1 tea makers.

@djsmiley2k Been too busy playing ingress.

is it still active?

Lost my keys and stranded myself on a mountain. Crashed my bike. Ran out of fuel and stranded myself on a junction. Got stuck and stranded myself in a ditch. What's there to funny?

i could prob play without issue on thuis phone but got bored
thats allpretty funny
other than the bike crash
i started neew jorb
but STP still slightly confusing me

now a route would normally end up being syncroius
i cant sopell :/

Bob
@djsmiley2k lol, been past T2 (local shop) quite a few times. Tried it once at a cafe. Tasted ... just like Twinnings... except mouth-burningly hot cause apparently that cafe hadn't heard of reasonable temperatures.

lol
yeah
all I know is the staff are lovely when I used to speak to em
and the products seem quite.... expensive/specialised

Bob
@djsmiley2k they are. I just get black tea bags at the supermarket -_-

ah fair enough
when you said it was australian tea, I presumed you were some kind of coniseur

3:59 PM
would you say someone who uses a computer daily but isn't a "superuser" or "power user", is computer illiterate?

no
if they can turn it on, and use it to do what they need to do, then they are literate in computer usage
Why tho...

GF argument

Is someone who drives a car, but has no clue how combustion engines work, or know how to change a tyre not a driver?

she claims to be computer illiterate

Did you laugh at her?

4:02 PM
no

Bob
@djsmiley2k nah. was just the cheapest one and had a huge "grown in Australia" label on it

shame.

Bob
usually Lipton or Twinnings for me. nice and simple :P

@Bob Ah, then the wonkyness is kind of explained? :D

Bob
@djsmiley2k well, not quite the cheapest. it was equal cheapest with the store brand one... :P
store brand was from Sri Lanka?

4:04 PM
@djsmiley2k i want sexeh times tonight, laughing at her is not conducive to ensuring that happens

@Burgi pffft
you'd be supprised

Bob
@Burgi depends how they use it

@Bob See, I've heard of tea from there...

Bob
I know far too many people who use a computer daily and still have no idea how to do anything outside of their normal routine

The question is, was the price inflated, due to the fact 'From Aus!!!'

Bob
4:04 PM
heck. I can count quite a few programmers among them

@Bob do you concider them illiterate?

Bob
@djsmiley2k no, it was cheap -_-

HAahah yes, I've known programmers who don't have a clue
@Bob but would it of been cheaper, if nto for the label...
i.e. it's the cheapest of cheap. :L/

Bob
@djsmiley2k when they don't know the difference between IE and Chrome? when they can't/won't read the text of an error message?

yup

Bob
4:05 PM
I count them as willfully illiterate
like, they actively try not to understand anything

which is fine if they let me do what I need to do, instead of trying to fix it themselves, and then going 'I don't know what I'm doing so it's not my fault I broke it even worse!'
yup

Bob
@djsmiley2k nah, already incredibly cheap :S

unfunctional people, basically
wtf
2.1 has some how climbed onto of a box and now is bouncing up and down on it.

Bob
@djsmiley2k I dunno, people who accidentally mess things up while trying to understand - sure, that's annoying, but I can give them points for actually trying

he's getting dangerous.
@Bob it's very.... situational

Bob
4:07 PM
far too many people forget how to read when faced with a computer

but I know the kind of people you mean

Bob
literally illiterate

yup

Bob
message says to do X. better call support to ask them what to do!
support says "do X"
...

See my Mum for example, she just can't get the link in her mind, of moving a mouse, and having it move on screen.

Bob
4:08 PM
@djsmiley2k and I assume she drives?
move the steering wheel and the car turns! wow!

she used to, years ago
@Bob ah but that's on the same axis
turn the wheel left, it goes left

Bob
@djsmiley2k no it's not

She's perfectly fine these days using a tablet

Bob
unless your car rolls over when you turn the wheel

@Bob .... it tries to
but fortunately it doesn't do so
same way bikes try to fall over once you turn.
@Bob on a horiztal plane, which way do you move a mouse, to make it go 'up' on screen
because you sure as hell don't lift it off the mouse pad.
She just couldn't understand that.
or rather, you turn a bike by trying to fall over.
Anyway, my point is, I can 'understand' that, but some people just.... urgh

4:28 PM
is it alright if i share a game a friend of friend has made for his MSc? he needs feedback for his report

Bob
@Burgi go ahead

annoyingly its on google drive rather than github or somewhere sensible
Please can some people play and test this game

Bob
@Burgi so... a bit more detail on what it actually is? :P
though I'm gonna hop into bed sooooo not gonna test it at 2:30 AM :P

its a walking sim i think
i dunno

4:52 PM
omfg my joints hurt today :(

5:14 PM
@Burgi testing

now i'm getting t2 adverts on facebook lul
and this kids, is why advertising bsased on what people may of done online is so flawed

Does anyone here know how software-based printer drivers work (such as print to PDF), and how I can make one?

you take the postscript, or whatever the print spooler puts out, and convert it into some form of file format?

5:30 PM
@Burgi Spelling error in "ancestors", second subtitle when you start the game
Not sure if this is my type, but I'll take another look at it later
@djsmiley2k Uhhh
I basically need the text of the document
To feed to a braille printer I'm working on
(cc @BenN, any idea how I can go about this?)

@allquixotic, any idea why this item is listed as export-controlled? https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1336260-REG/nitecore_p10gt_led_flashlight‌.html
Did some even deeper digging...
The light may fall under ECCN 0A647.y.5 (PDF page 8):
> y.5. Power controlled searchlights and control units therefor, "specially designed" for military use, and "equipment" mounting such units.
Page 7 states that export control reason AT (anti-terrorism) applies to 0A647.y.

@Rahul2001 I don't know much about that, sorry. What exactly are you trying to transform?

This chart outlines what countries are restricted for export, based on the various reasons for export control. Only the AT1 column applies here.
If there's an X, a license is required.
All told, the flashlight cannot be exported to denied entities or to embargoed countries like North Korea and Syria. It also cannot be exported to Sudan.
If it does not fall under this ECCN, then it's probably EAR99, which carries essentially the same exporting restrictions.
So... it does not look like an ordinary person not going to some hostile nation or selling the light to a hostile entity will need to worry about the export controls on this flashlight.
(relevant because I just acquired an SRT7GT, which is also listed as export-controlled by B&H)

Funny how small components like that are restricted yet we have no problems selling bad regimes hundreds of powerful modern military vehicles and weapons systems that they then turn around and use on us 10 years later
Most of the weapons fired at our troops in the Middle East were manufactured by the US or our allies
They don’t have the local infrastructure to make them so they buy them - and the arms and armaments that aren’t western are Soviet surplus.

The wording "'specially designed' for military use" probably holds true because the flashlight is marketed for military and law enforcement applications.
The reason I bought this was to replace a busted SRT7 - it was smashed in an altercation (fortunately, nobody was hurt):

It still turns on. The battery was also unscathed.
Most flashlights are not built to withstand this kind of abuse. At least those not designed for law enforcement or other mission-critical applications.

6:01 PM
@BenN What I'm trying to do is basically get all the text of a document
Then feed it into an exe, which converts it into signals and gives them to a microcontroller, which in turn controls a few motors which print braille

@djsmiley2k STP is hilariously easy

yus
i just need to re-swot up

@bwDraco Altercation? O.o

google for $documentType2txt ?
feels like you're over thinking the whole thing
obviously, making a printer device would be nice, but it doesn't sound needed so far.

@djsmiley2k Nup
Need the kid to be able to just CTRL+P and select the printer and it should get printed
A visually impaired kid recently joined our class

6:08 PM
Did you catch that?

And he doesn't even have textbooks in braille
And since my school is getting a 3D printer...
I can print parts out
Might as well work on a decent and useful device.

I love what your going for
but that's a huge jump from 'I haven othing right now'
1. proof of concept
what format do the documents start in?
if we're litterally talking everything under the sun then you need to look at programming a printer driver.

@djsmiley2k Docx, PDF
I have a design and layout for the hardware
Programming almost done
Need funds for hardware

I think ghostscript would help
but I'm not 100%, as not a programmer
what format does your exe want it in?
because 'text' means nothing
utf-8, utf-16? ascii encoded?, binary? nonbinary?, any locale support?, etc

@djsmiley2k Right now I only have support for printable chars. ASCII.

yep

k
(I don't know if non-printables even exist in a braille world, but the questions matter)
I think you need to start there...
but again, no real clue unfortunately
In linux, would be easier :/
write to /dev/lp0 XD

cool
my fingers aren't sensitive enough I don't think.

@Rahul2001 my resistors arrived but I was sleeping when they arrived so will have to pick them up on monday >_>

6:18 PM
There was a girl in my primary school who was completely blind

@Avery ow

she had a carer, and a braille machine
I remember one day we were talking about how words can evoke thoughts
and we ended up asking her what 'red' was to her
the answers of 'fire' 'hot' and stuff were weird coming from someone who should have no notion of what a colour .... is
@Burgi that u in colour is for you :P
welp 2.1 seems to have gone to sleep, awesome

@Rahul2001 According to this SO answer, Ghostscript can get the text out of a PDF
There might be a similar thing for DOCX, but if you're on Windows you can automate Word from COM to read such documents, and worst case you can parse the XML

@BenN huh, cool, thanks!
@BenN hm

@Rahul2001 Does robobraille.org help you?
