@tereško oddly I am completely disinterested in automatically syncing my bookmarks between.... 3 or 4 different PCs I use
ESPECIALLY the office one

Bob
12:48 AM
@JourneymanGeek kvm in online.net is useless. worse than useless.

1:05 AM
:(
yeah, I'm getting the impression their bare metal offerings are kinda at the VPS level of customisability :(

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I'm taking the next tier up, too

lol mine dosen't even do a KVM, and apparently since there's no display, you can't run windows natively on em.
and ugh. I need to try to get at least one domain/vhost up this week so I can start migrating stuff ._.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek lol. if it's nginx I can help :P

1:32 AM
@Bob the point is me doing it lol

1:45 AM
hello
school again today

and its mostly being to lazy knackered.
I already have a test subdomain to do this on

2:13 AM
YAYAYAYAYAYYAYAYAYYY!

Arch dosen't have an installer either ;p

Q: When writing an ios app when do you have to reference others work?

JoshLorI am creating an ios app and have been using a lot of different libraries and SDK's eg.PayPal and Firebase. Wheat is the general consensus on crediting these groups. For instance, PayPal says this: Copyright (c) 2014-2016 PayPal Holdings, Inc. All rights reserved. Redistribution and u...

^^ out of scope
" I couldn’t recall anyone doing anything like this on a company level, especially in the world of browsers. So I thought we should give it a go." - Minecraft developers literally did this for a charity game they wrote
It was absolutely horrible but, lol, it was for charity and was written in like 12 hours.
I am not looking forward to my trip this month......Have to fit 3 weeks of stuff in a single bag because my employer will only pay for one bag.

0_0
how big a bag?

1 hour later…
4:29 AM
more then 55lbs and its overweight
going to have to do laundry
Going to use vacuum bags (less the vacuum) in attempt to stuff as much as possible

5:14 AM
Hello, guys.

user226528
Remember the question that I had posted on ServerFault and was initially scorned by the elite there? Some newcomer finally answered it! God bless PowerShell.

user226528
It is always PowerShell that comes to rescue.

user226528
Of course, to be fair, PowerShell is the only serious attempt on Microsoft's part in scripting. What we had before it was that dumbass WSH that was tied to COM.

Bob
5:38 AM
@JourneymanGeek found out the old Java KVM option is still available. So that's good.
Now if only it were documented in the wiki... or mentioned by support staff... or ...

6:06 AM
sigh my quest for a laptop is going badly
How long do dell laptops last? Are they sturdy enough to be working 24/7 with
All the premium/work machines are above the budget

Bob
@HackToHell flip a coin
they last as long as the warranty
(really, that applies for anything you buy - you can only safely bet on the warranty)

extended 3 year warranty ftw then
Damn, HP has a 25% failure rate
But not sure about the authenticity of the study
looks like I have to call Dell up to extend warranty

6:21 AM
Hmm... looks like I have to figure out how to flash dd-wrt and set up a wireless bridge tomorrow... that outta be fun!

Bob
@HackToHell I'm not necessarily saying you should
much of the time you end up paying extra for nothing
it's a game of chances

@Ramhound Minecraft Browser? :p

@Bob oh, hopefully it fails in a year if it does

6:39 AM
@MichaelFrank openwrt may be a better bet I am told

6:55 AM
@JourneymanGeek oh really? I'll take a look...
My power line isn't running fast enough for my home server operations , so I'm looking to bridge over wifi instead...

@HackToHell doesn't surprise me for consumer laptops, the cooling and general quality is horrible.

@satibel I ordered this, cause this has two fans :D compuindia.com/laptops-ultrabooks/inspiron-laptops/…
And hopefully better cooling

damn, 1 255€, that's expensive.
that's better^:p

7:11 AM
that's insane!
So many heatpipes
What laptop is that

@HackToHell clevo W110ER (an 11" laptop with a discreet GPU)
I have one, though I need to redo the whole case, I'm waiting to have finished my current job, and build my cnc to mill an aluminum/copper chassis.

wow there is a Copper Man in this laptop.

@Tiina hi tina, are you tiny?

Bob
7:27 AM
@satibel I want a discreet GPU; mine is too noisy

@Bob nice one, though I typo-ed discrete.

7:40 AM
hey

user226528
^ Hi

hey ho

user226528
Hmm... This is interesting: It appears that "gratuity" in the context of U.S. military is a bribe, while in the context of U.K. armed forces, is a legitimate bonus.

user226528
Although a dictionary check says it is not necessarily like this everywhere.

@Bob ._.

7:46 AM
morning

user226528
^ Hi. :)

\o @Fleet

I was 6 minutes late to school, so they didn't let me enter -_-

:/
dang
this might be the hottest board I've dealt with
(my esp32 arrived)
(it's literally hot)
(like 70C-hot, not avery-hot)

Bob
8:08 AM
@Rahul2001 ...dodgy school

look at me doing answers!!! superuser.com/a/1225498/393570

@Rahul2001 school is like prison. you need to revolt!

8:21 AM

8:48 AM
LMAO

@satibel no I m not

Bob
@JourneymanGeek all migrated :P

9:04 AM
Is 1.2GHz Dual Core on MacBook same as 1.2GHz on a PC?
By today's standards, 1.2GHz Dual Core won't be enough for PC.

@Bob lol.you don't work at clown college.....

So I assume MacBook is of different architecture and Mac OS is faster.

yawn

I'm prefixing certain mailbox names with 🛑 now, to signal that they are deprecated and it works like a charm. They all get sorted together and everything
What a time to be alive!

you're prefixing them with some brand new unicode?
why not just prefix with OLD- or DEAD- or whatever

9:11 AM
Hell yeah

Z-Dead- if you want them at the end of whatever list

Because it's 2017 and that's how we roll

suddenly things become more clear

It'll both confuse and annoy

lol
but isn't it you that has to fix it then?
like, does outlook even let you add those mailboxes, if needed to?

9:14 AM
That's actually something I'm trying to learn by doing this
There is a lot of cleanup right now and this is a nice way to group items, especially since emoji are rendered in color

nod

And @WilliamHilsum is now our O365 cloud service partner!

@Boris_yo if it's recent, it's intel/x64 based. 2x1.2GHZ is enough for a good os like bsd or linux to be fluid, don't expect wonders though.

@satibel Is it enough for graphic editing programs?

@Boris_yo yes, if you don't care about render times/ work on low res.

9:24 AM
@satibel And is 8GB RAM enough with 128GB SSD?

what's the price?
@Boris_yo that is enough, though you might want an external hard drive if you have a lot of work.

MacBook 12" $1198

Bob
@Boris_yo "1.2GHz Dual Core" is meaningless

With 256GB SSD though...

Bob
I have a Core-M Windows tablet that runs at a nominal 0.9 GHz with "boost to 2.20 GHz". Guess what? It runs fine. Very smooth.
I have an Avoton server CPU that runs at a nominal 2.40 GHz. It lags.

9:27 AM
Imo, get an alternative, if you're not locked to macOS.

Bob
I have a Z3735 tablet at nominal ~1.3 GHz, boost to ~1.8. It's a bit laggy. But, hey, the nominal is higher than the Core-M!
I have a Z2760 at nominal 1.80 GHz. It's very laggy.

@OliverSalzburg o0

@Bob mine isn't, for reasons

Bob
There's such a huge range that the clock speed and core count alone is useless

@JourneymanGeek We're connected on Facebook and he caught me venting about O365 vows

9:29 AM
@Bob I guess without experiencing it first, technical specs mean nothing...

Bob
@Boris_yo Technical specs can be useful, if you have enough detail.

Unlike 90s where you were firm that Pentium 233MHz is faster than Pentium 133MHz

Bob
At a minimum, you need the generation and class. Preferably the specific architecture.

Bob
@satibel That wouldn't help, either. The OS has nothing to do with it; it's too slow to smoothly render modern webpages.

9:32 AM
@Bob well, mine does, though the 2GB ram makes it so I can't open more that 4-8 tabs.

Bob
@Boris_yo Core-M.
5 mins ago, by Bob
I have a Core-M Windows tablet that runs at a nominal 0.9 GHz with "boost to 2.20 GHz". Guess what? It runs fine. Very smooth.
27 mins ago, by Boris_yo
By today's standards, 1.2GHz Dual Core won't be enough for PC.
Core-M is fine for a mobile device running Windows.
@satibel Lemme clarify, media-heavy webpages.

aka Ads? :p

@Bob And for MacBook running Mac OS?
"Dual-core Intel Core m3 or i5 processor"

What they mean by OR? They are not sure which they got?
M3 is not i5...

Bob
@Boris_yo Specs are generic and copied from Apple website. The actual product is labelled in the title.
@Boris_yo I don't use macOS.

Sounds they don't know what processor MacBook comes that they are selling...

9:37 AM
actually, it should be fine for photoshop, it's around the same perfs as a phenom 2 x4, which should handle single thread similarly to an x6, which was good enough for me.

I have 8GB on DELL, W7 and my page file spikes... All the burden is on SSD...
But if Mac OS has better memory management and apps take less then why not...
1432MB free ... BUT opening Paint.NET with high-res image will bring it down to ~500 and that's with no layers and no additional image tabs. Opening InkScape will waste it.
Yeah, I am concerned about RAM. Not sure 8GB will be enough for this on MacBook. Maybe I should upgrade RAM on W7 to 16GB.
I also heard MacBooks with touch pad are buggy and have QC issues...

@Boris_yo I hate those touchpads, personnally and WHY THE HELL DOES EVERY MANUFACTURER COPIES IT?

@satibel Touchpads in general?

@Boris_yo touchpads with no buttons.

I don't use mine...

9:47 AM
@Boris_yo I like those.

@satibel Do you prefer with buttons?
Dafuq... How come my upload speed is ~200Kbps when on ISP connection but when I am on HMA VPN upload is ~700Kbps?

I hate those
the red part isn't even where you have to click.

ISP's package is 20/4 Mbps, yet yesterday I uploaded photos to Dropbox and Box.net with 1.4 MBps speed.

I mean, right click is with 2 fingers

@satibel Oh, touch functionality, both clicks and scrolls? I prefer with buttons too.

9:50 AM
also, you can't click and hold with two fingers, you need to double tap.

Without them you have to search for areas that perform certain functionality.
@satibel This laptop looks nice though...

I prefer that.

@satibel Buttons above touchpad? Nice.

I WANT THINKPAD

above or below, but the 3 button touchpad+trackpoint is good.
though, those are real clicks.

10:00 AM
hm
yoda?
2

@satibel Where is that from?

@JourneymanGeek the lenovo version

0_0
that's... interesting

@OliverSalzburg lenovo thinkpad mechanical keyboard with trackpoint

10:02 AM

@OliverSalzburg its a thinkpad branded tex yoda

Bob
mouse surgery
I'm swapping the wheel

Ah, that's what @satibel just posted

Bob
which means taking EVERY other thing apart
I have 14 tiny screws on my desk
20 including the bottom cover screws
taken 10 buttons off so far
two circuit boards
two ribbon cables, two sliding switches
and a partridge in a pear tree

10:09 AM

10:33 AM
And now I'm going to install a DC in a remote location and try to connect it with our on-prem AD

AGH
TFW you want to work but a group of friends give a recommendation [sense8- it's on netflix] and everything you did in last 12 hours or so is watching it.

That's why people like us need multiple screens

I do have 2 screens

So you can work while watching

see

10:38 AM
Sounds like you're set!

that makes sense

@satibel Oof... that's $400NZD D:

@Avery seems interesting, adding it to my "to watch" list.

Sense8? It was really weird from memory.

It is.

10:43 AM
Did any of you play with Windows Server Nano?
I think I'll give it a go

@OliverSalzburg is it on msdn?
nope

@Avery Apparently only available on AWS and Azure

oh

Windows Server 2016 is a server operating system developed by Microsoft as part of the Windows NT family of operating systems, developed concurrently with Windows 10. The first early preview version (Technical Preview) became available on October 1, 2014 together with the first technical preview of System Center. Windows Server 2016 was released on September 26, 2016 at Microsoft's Ignite conference and became generally available on October 12, 2016. == Features == Windows Server 2016 has a variety of new features, including Active Directory Federation Services: It is possible to configure AD FS...

> Windows Server 2016 offers a new installation option: Nano Server. Nano Server is a remotely administered server operating system optimized for private clouds and datacenters. It is similar to Windows Server in Server Core mode, but significantly smaller, has no local logon capability, and only supports 64-bit applications, tools, and agents. It takes up far less disk space, sets up significantly faster, and requires far fewer updates and restarts than Windows Server. When it does restart, it restarts much faster. The Nano Server installation option is available for Standard and Datacente

10:45 AM
The 2016 I installed the other day, I installed with Desktop Experience. But working with RSAT remotely is working so great, I think I'll go headless with the next install

They're killing off Nano, aren't they?

sounds so
microsoft kills anything that's great

@MichaelFrank Seems like they just introduced it

@OliverSalzburg About a year or so ago...

maybe the uptake and interest was not enough

10:49 AM
Oh, I think they're repurposing the way it works...

I didn't see any mention of a cancellation anywhere but this room so far :P

HA! our rival agency has said its impossible to have an interactive map on the customers site....
2 seconds of googling has proved them wrong

> Microsoft is removing all physical features from Nano Server. That means that drivers will be removed. Hyper-V will be removed. SOFS will be removed. Failover Clustering will be removed. In short, you will not be able to install Nano Server on a physical virtual machine. In fact, you will not be able to install Nano Server into a VHD either. There will be no virtual machine support.
So they're effectively killing it off for it's original intended purpose, and pivoting it towards containers

@MichaelFrank Okay. Seems to me like that was the whole point of Nano
If I wanted that stuff, I'd not install Nano
But, then again, it's all new to me :D

seems good, you can have a core install running docker, and then each container for a special purpose. (one nano for dns, one nano for file server, one nano for ad etc...)

Bob
10:57 AM
fixed! brand new wheel :)
@OliverSalzburg what was wrong with yours again?

Ha, this is such a fun idea for a mobile game!

@MichaelFrank that sounds like it makes the whole thing too easy

@Burgi Until you get stuck with 16 pawns and the opponent has 4 queens.

@MichaelFrank worse, only kings.

balance issues

11:05 AM
@Burgi The title is called "Really Bad Chess"... Of course there will be balance issues.

good point

@Burgi balancing it by giving a weight to each piece, and making each player have the same score (maybe with a bonus for black.)

@Bob The clicky-click of the wheel. So no more tab closing for me

Bob
@OliverSalzburg so the actual button on the control board?
damn
I have a whole shell sans wheel spare now I thought might help you :P

@Bob No idea. It didn't work, so I used the spare one

Bob
11:09 AM
@OliverSalzburg lol. spare g602?

Yeah
I usually keep spares of my mouse/keyboard

Bob
I still have my spare :P
@OliverSalzburg hi! :P
well, no keyboard spare
but got two of the mouse at the time... hey, it was half price
@OliverSalzburg have you opened it up?
oh, if you do - don't disconnect the flat cable

@Bob Nope

Bob
it's got the dodgiest flat cable connector I've ever seen

But I still have it

Bob
11:10 AM
huge pain to get it back in (there's a tiny padding piece of plastic under the locking clip)

I could really replace my combo here at work now that I look at it

Bob
@OliverSalzburg take a look sometime, maybe the wheel's just misaligned on the button or there's something next to it blocking it?
actually I think these buttons tend to be fairly standard ones and not so hard to find in hobby stores

@Bob Well, I would still have to clean the whole thing and I don't want to invest that time
The whole mouse was overdue for replacement

Bob
@OliverSalzburg I just spent an hour cleaning/fixing mine :P
and that includes taking apart two mice
eh, was kinda fun

The sign of needing a replacement keyboard: blank keys

Bob
11:15 AM
lol
my keyboard uses clear (translucent?) plastic inserts for the labels (cause led)... those aren't gonna wear off

@Bob From a cost perspective, it would be cheaper for me if I just bought a new one

@OliverSalzburg double shot abs ftw.

@tereško I think Das Keyboard actually sucks :P

why?
not enough RGB?

11:17 AM
@OliverSalzburg dyson actually sucks

Because I use a Natural Ergonomic keyboard, so everything that is not that, sucks
When people have to use my workstations, they're always like "WTF, how can anyone work like this?" and it's the other way around for me
And no type of mechanical switch will have an impact on that

good for you

btw, at work, I have an international qwerty, and people are already wtf-ing.

i thought France used AWERTY layouts?

11:25 AM
That's probably why they're wtf'ing

@Burgi AZERTY.

even crazier

but for programming I prefer QWERTY.

i think before we leave the UK should get some law introduced to the EU parliament to make all European keyboards use mini bear traps instead of keys

/me sticks with US layout QWERTY

11:30 AM
@tereško that's almost the same as mine.

well, there are minor differences between DE, UK and US layouts for QWERTY keyboards
really annoying differences

We have one of these kicking around at work, still in the box.
Nobody wants to use it.

because they looks like some old medical device

@tereško de is qwertz IIRC.

Sometimes I can still surprise myself
I just created a shortcut on my desktop, which points to my home directory. I then renamed that shortcut to ~
When I enter ~ into the Explorer navbar now, it sends me to my home dir

11:35 AM
lol installed ESXi from a USB... at the end of the install it opened the DVD drive. Found my daughters Tom Kitten audio CD.

XD

> CAPACITY: 12.4 GHz
Yea... Okay computer. I'm sure you've got that right.

4x(4-1)
err

11:50 AM
If one website reports being hacked and to change password, does it make a safe practice of coming up with new password or I can still have variation of previous password?
Let's say on hacked website my password is "homeguy1". Would it still be safe if I vary it to this? "homeguy_11578"?

no

@tereško Arrgh!
Y?

hmmm

dictionary

dictionary attack on existing passwordss?
I guess it does happen

11:52 AM
you import the hacked passwords in the dictionary

They can figure it out from "homeguy1" to "homeguy_11578"?
Their dictionary bot guesses on existing password?
And tries random variations?

there is a more than one way to skin a cat

But what of website has login ban?
They use multiple IP bots?

what is "login ban" ?
also, if your password was "homeguy1" (or similar), then you deserve anything you get

Bottom line: Don't do it. Just use randomly generated passwords

12:02 PM
@tereško Login ban is when website bans IP due to continuous attempts to login with wrong credentials.
@OliverSalzburg You mean those ugly, lengthy passwords that don't make any sense?

I mean randomly generated passwords

my randomly generated password is best!: *
errr
:D

@Boris_yo the answer is maybe. It is less safe than a new one, but most of the guys who search for leaked passwords will only use a few variations such as caps and a few char inserts, as it is generally better to have a lot of passwords quickly than all passwords in a long time
@djsmiley2k my password for the admin account is "for the administrator account." because it asks to enter the password for the administrator account.

let me generate some random passwords for you:
12345678
12345678
12345678
12345678

@Avery yuck, 8 char passwords, those are so 2007.

12:16 PM
I use 64

@Avery I know :p

actually
as I said my password length, I downplayed the security

I should finish my login keyboard.

it's just that it'll still take years to crack

@Avery ah ah.

12:20 PM
I use 4096 bit keys atm.
where the option is given

@Avery which is complete and utter overkill if you use a sensible characterset

@Avery actually you lost about 1.6129032% of security, assuming only letters and numbers (62 characters.)

it's more than just letters and numbers.
@SEJPM I just use a and b
it's easier to remember that way

@Avery you find 64 single binary-assigned positions easy to remember?
uhmkay

I consider it as binary, then convert to decimal
and when I need to login, I remember that decimal

12:27 PM
@Avery that sounds like an absolute hassle
(if you aren't a god in converting bin-to-dec)

it's a fun mental challenge

relevant ^

Problem 1, I can't get the back off the new phoine

welp, netflix matches this to me 97%

Promoting a server to an RODC while it is connected via VPN → You're going to have a bad time
Let's try that again...

12:33 PM
@Avery seems fair :p

woo new phone charging

@Rahul2001 meh, i maintain worse code than that
