4:00 PM
it was a little childish but not really inappropriate

It was a silly and a bit immature, yes, but not offensive.

I have to say I agree. Please don't use chat flags for such minor stuff. If it really bothered you, at least ask the person who posted the message you object to to delete before flagging and bringing in the mod rain.
4

I dunno. I kinda wish chat flags provided context to reviewers.
I'm going to ask on Meta.

dude, let it go

@bwDraco We all do. But this flag was actually validated. I don't know how context would have helped.

4:03 PM
@djsmiley2k That's why Bob said biggest magic rock. It's the biggest confirmed magic rock we know of
Bob wouldn't say something like that unless it was scientifically accurate.

@djsmiley2k, sorry about that. I honestly did feel offended by that comment, but the flag probably wasn't warranted.

Q: When reviewing chat flags, please show two lines of context and underline the message timestamp

badpNot all communities and rooms are created equal. Some have higher standards than others. Thus, what can be considered offensive in one room may be very well acceptable in another. What makes them different? Context. Here's an example: Oh wow, Lara Croft got raped? I wish I was there too...

Bounty time?

Couldn't hurt
Also, man, I go to write one e-mail and flags happen
:/

It makes flags disproportionately powerful and prone to abuse.

ty who ever removed that
@bwDraco erm. Some things I've said before I can agree with being offensive, especially in certain situations, but that above?... really?!

@djsmiley2k Sorry about that. Somebody seemed to think what you posted was offensive and the system automatically suspended you.

4:08 PM
I mean, check the guide lines on flagging.
@terdon No worries, it was automatic? That's a bit... broken?

@djsmiley2k We're talking about the guy who goes out of his way to find just about everything offensive, c'mon.

That's one of the reasons why people should only flag things as offensive when they're actually offensive and not everyday words that politely describe parts of a human body.

When a flag is validated, the message is deleted by Feeds and the poster is given a 30 minute suspension
The question is why someone validated the flag

@djsmiley2k Very. We make the, often mistaken, assumption that people will only flag things that deserve to be flagged.

It was me, but I think the chat flag system is bad.
It's very prone to abuse because it fails to provide context.

4:10 PM
Wasn't just you though; it takes multiple flaggers (unless a mod red-flags it to begin with) to cause the removal/suspension

@Burgi Not necessarily

@bwDraco Agree on this.
@BenN :O

@terdon MAMMALS! DON'T BE SPECIEST!

Two people hate me or mammals!

@BenN AFAIK only one flag is required

4:11 PM
@terdon Nod, I didn't say b.....

@terdon Wait, he got suspended based on the flag? WTF!

@NotDog If the flagger is a mod, yes, but usually it's multiple

Unless a flag isn't actually brought to anyone's attention unless it's multi-flagged? But a single validation is all that's required no?

A single validation by a mod will

Ah

4:11 PM
/me looks at @DavidPostill :D

@ThatREDACTEDGuy Happens to me all the time

@ThatREDACTEDGuy Chat suspended and only for 30 minutes, but yes.

When a flag is validated, the message is deleted by Feeds and the poster is given a 30 minute suspension
Hadn't read that. Should need confirmation from multiple users...

I got flagged and auto-suspended for calling a supermarket retarded

Also, I just realized I'm switching between multiple meanings of "validated", sorry

4:12 PM
man, JMG is gonna be pissed that this happened again when he is asleep

It takes multiple validations by 10K+ users, or one by a mod, to clear a flag and cause the suspension/removal

@djsmiley2k reasts? Like the chicken breasts you get at KFC?

I just wish the flag system was better. I meant no ill will, but it's just so vulnerable to abuse.
It gives disproportionate power to the flagger.

Unless something is pretty clearly offensive, I'd suggest just gently saying "hey, that's not really appropriate"

Yeah. We all wish it were better. it's hard to get right though.
The general idea is to err on the side of caution since sometimes what is posted is really, truly and unambiguously offensive.
But yes, as BenN said, flags are not supposed to act as replacements of normal human interaction. When someone annoys you, you ask them to stop. You don't call the cops. Or, at least, I hope you don't.
Let's try asking first and flagging second, that's all.

4:16 PM
I really like the idea of only showing normal flags to 10K's in the room (if available) for a while, and only putting them out onto the network if they don't get handled, or if multiple flags are cast within some window in the same room

Aye, there's a meta proposal along those lines.

Concerning context, I think it's implied you can visit the chatroom to gather context before accepting the flag. At least I try to always do this.

Look, I'm really sorry about this. What seems offensive to one person may not be to others.
The way it pops up makes it seem urgent, which causes people to not want to look at the context.

##flagged

@bwDraco Hey, don't worry, you were trying to do what's best.

4:17 PM

And there are varying degrees of offensiveness that aren't captured by the one flag option (unless you want to poke all the mods with a custom flag, which you shouldn't unless something mod-requiring is going on)

Yes, balancing the response to flags can be tricky. Managing a community is difficult.

@bwDraco Out of curiosity though, what difference do you think that context would have made? If anything, the context made it less offensive, not more.

That's the point. It's subjective. I may have thought it was offensive, but others may not.

@BenN Worse yet, there are varying degrees of offensiveness from person to person for the same words.

4:19 PM
Given context, reviewers are less likely to just blindly confirm the flag.

Here's that MSE I was thinking of
156
Q: Add escalation system to chat flags

Mad ScientistThe offensive/spam flags in chat are shown to every moderator from a parent site (on chat.stackexchange.com that is every SE 2.0 moderator, more than 200 right now) and 10k chat users as well. This is potentially far more users than a flag on an SE site itself is shown to. I don't think it is n...

@NotDog :O

But we all should strive a balancing, or else in worst case scenarios it becomes either a toxic environment or a zero policy intolerant ironclad place. No one wants neither.

4:31 PM
@Burgi They can if they identify as such! Don't be such a taxonomist!

But yeah you're right it's mammal specific

@ThatREDACTEDGuy isn't that someone who stuffs dead animals for a living?

@Burgi That's a taxidermist

ah ok

##wiki taxidermy

4:33 PM
@Burgi No, that's a taxidermist, you're thinking of someone who drives a cab for a living

Taxidermy is the preserving of an animal's body via stuffing or mounting for the purpose of display or study. Animals are often, but not always, portrayed in a life-like state. The word taxidermy refers to the process of preserving the animal, but the word is also used to describe the end product, which are often called "mounts". The word taxidermy is derived from the Greek words "taxis" and "derma". Taxis means to "to move", and "derma" means "skin" (the dermis). The word taxidermy translates to "arrangement of skin". Taxidermy is practiced primarily on vertebrates (mammals, birds, fish, reptiles...
Taxonomy may refer to == Science == Taxonomy (biology), a branch of science that encompasses the description, identification, nomenclature, and classification of organisms Alpha taxonomy, the description and basic classification of new species, subspecies, and other taxa Linnaean taxonomy meaning either of: the original classification scheme of Carl Linnæus rank-based scientific classification as opposed to clade-based classification Evolutionary taxonomy, traditional post-Darwinian hierarchical biological classification Numerical taxonomy, a taxonomic method employing numeric algorithms Phenetics...
@ThatREDACTEDGuy No you're thinking of taximetercabrioletonomy

@Burgi You haven't truly worked with CMS's until you learn to hate taxonomies with a passion.

I hate everything with a fish.

omfg....
so i got a parking fine the other day saying that i hadn't paid the parking fee while I was in work. i pay on an app and they deduct the money from my bank account, i logged in to find the receipt. there wasn't one. so i checked my bank statement and the money has gone out as normal
now both the owners of the carpark and the app people are saying that i haven't paid but money is missing from my bank account with their fingerprints all over it

Yay, govmnt
Or private?

its made me so angry

Sue sue sue them all \o/

in the UK, parking is covered under civil law so its private
i am NOT going mad! its there in my bank statement!

Create a PDF, get an official statement from the bank, whatever
Then sue both parking and app company

5:52 PM
already got the PDF

Here if you can proof you've been unfairly charged for something, the law says you're entitled to get twice the value

not sure thats a thing here
i'm going to eat and try to calm down

@Burgi As far as you know. That's like saying everybody in this room has two legs. Any amputees could get very upset.

@Burgi the money may go from your account

are you Scaramanga?

5:56 PM
I'm just a guy with weird stretchy skin

@Burgi Will you do the fandanga?

Francisco Scaramanga is a fictional character and the main antagonist in the James Bond novel and film versions of The Man with the Golden Gun. Scaramanga's signature weapon is a golden gun. In the novel, the character is nicknamed "Pistols" Scaramanga and is also called "Paco" (a Spanish diminutive of Francisco). In the film, the character was played by Christopher Lee (the real-life step-cousin of James Bond creator Ian Fleming). == Novel biography == Francisco Scaramanga, of Catalan origin, became a trick shot and performed in acts in a circus owned by his father Enrico while a youngster. Chandler Muriel Bing is a fictional character from the NBC sitcom Friends, portrayed by Matthew Perry. == Appearances == Chandler Muriel Bing was born on April 8, 1968, to an erotic novelist mother and a gay father who later became the star of a Las Vegas drag show. He is of Scottish and Swedish ancestry. He is an only child and is apparently from an affluent family, as he mentions his family hired servants such as a pool boy and a house boy (both of whom he suspects slept with his father). Chandler's parents announced their divorce to him over Thanksgiving dinner when he was nine years old, an...

OH LOOK THERE GOES A HOT LADY, HE DIDN'T WHISTLE! GAAAAAAAY!

@BenN The flag was validated twice and rejected once.

@DavidPostill can you pull stats on how many times peoples accepted flags, have then been overturned?
might be interesting

@djsmiley2k he can't.

@DavidPostill Two votes is enough?
That's a problem.

6:27 PM
If one is a mod

@bwDraco ....
i'm not sure it IS a problem
as long as the flagging is valid.
The problem is dealing with invalid flags.

Usually "yes" - "no" = 3 is the rule

As I've said before, the flag system gives way too much power to the person flagging the message.

yup

Yes, I made a mistake, but I've dealt with egregious abuse in the Mathematics room that wound up getting escalated to Shog9.

@Avery @bwDraco well, I looked. Turns out @TheGreatDuck and @Dodsy have been trading flags here for a couple of days. Latest volley was courtesy of Dodsy, but TheGreatDuck still leads by a fair margin for raw numbers pointless flags.
good ol' days.

@bwDraco I could not have said it better :D
3 months? I don't understand why people don't act faster on stuff like this. If I got a report like that, I'd crap my pants
...and then I'd hopefully fix the issue

@bwDraco Well that wasn't very smart on their part

wow
they concider 2016 to be the biggest myspace failure
they don't remember hte good old days of profile take overs and all that crap

I don't know. I pop in here every now and then. It's always boring computer-related crap. Finally, there something juicy, discussion of nipples, and I missed it. Even @ThatREDACTEDGuy didn't have the courtesy to post photos of the breast feeding as a benchmark so we could all decide whether to consider it offensive.

hmmm
I wonder if I can pull the radio code from my wifes car
before we pull the radio out
@fixer1234 lol

@bwDraco, you've produced some good canonical questions. Do you have any thoughts on the best solution for meta.superuser.com/questions/12521/…. (I mentioned you in a comment.)

ahhhhhhhhhhhh x->y problems
'I'm not using powershell because it runs workflows that don't have a command I need' --- proceeds not to mention said command.
@fixer1234 I think your idea of a single answer posted now, to answer them all, is the best one
each existing one will always have fobles of 'that isn't what was asked' about it.
Whereas something written directly for this will be right, first time.

7:19 PM
@fixer1234 Kinda busy right now, but I'll look into it when I get home.
Perhaps a single question addressing both problems would alleviate the confusion
Perhaps a single question addressing both problems would alleviate the confusion? What we need is one answer that covers both topics.
I'm inclined to say we should write a new answer to one of the existing questions and merge the two generic questions together.

@bwDraco, and a question that covers both.

@djsmiley2k where is said money then?

@Burgi tick tick tick
Who makes money, from money?

A part of me wants to start fresh with a new question, but that would result in duplication of effort and a loss lack of prior post history.

the royal mint?

7:23 PM
Never think it's weird, a shop can bill you and they get authorized instantly, but only notice it gone from your account 3 days later?

@bwDraco, I didn't spot an existing question that would be a good landing point for the entire subject.

why the hell are we still talking about the chat flags?

@Burgi We're not.
I can't look into this in depth right now as I'm presently on the field but I'll take a closer look when I get a chance.

my neighbours are being loud and they woke me from a nap hence the slight grumpiness
on the field?
not in a field?

@Burgi, "on the field" would be a farmer deciding to lay down on the job and take a nap. "In the field" is someone working at a location away from the office.
A farmer is someone outstanding in his field.

7:28 PM
@Burgi flag em

@fixer1234 this sounds like logic. something from which i'm eschewing right now!
@djsmiley2k normally the transactions don't show up if they are pending though

@Burgi, logic? I try not to touch the stuff, I'm trying to cut down.
@Burgi, can you give us a clue as to that image?

2 hours ago, by Burgi
so i got a parking fine the other day saying that i hadn't paid the parking fee while I was in work. i pay on an app and they deduct the money from my bank account, i logged in to find the receipt. there wasn't one. so i checked my bank statement and the money has gone out as normal

@Burgi, take that to the people who levied the fine and tell them to shove it up their...uh, oh. Better be careful. This could get flagged.

@fixer1234 up their flag pole? ;)
basically there is a fault in the app that has allowed the transaction to go through but not leave a record at either the carpark owners or the app developers but has left me £2.40 out of pocket and with a £100 fine...

7:43 PM
@Burgi, usually in those screw-ups, just providing the evidence is enough to clear it up. The carpark can check their books and see if they have an unexplained payment, or the bank can determine that the system might have sent it to the wrong place. If it was the bank's fault, they will usually straighten it out with the people who were supposed to be paid.

i've sent an copy to the carpark people but i want the app developers to admit fault as it is their app that processed the payment
i feel like i'm fighting pointless bureaucracy at the moment. every service i deal with is not sending me the correct information

@Burgi, is the app a third party service that is an intermediary between your bank and the people who get paid, or is it a service of the bank?

its a 3rd party

Most businesses will waive the fine if you show that you tried to pay it on time and it was someone else's mistake. They might even have been paid, but the payment lacked your information so they couldn't credit it to you.

@fixer1234 these guys: paybyphone.co.uk

7:55 PM
@bwDraco In this case yes. I guess 2 yes and 1 no (a majority) was sufficient. There was no mod flag.

@Burgi, I'm guessing paybyphone's TOS say they aren't responsible for their own mess-ups, they just provide a service that has no guarantees. £2.40 isn't a big incentive for them to deal with, and they probably don't care about your fine. Hopefully, they'll just straighten it out, but your best leverage is their reputation. If they don't fix it, bringing public attention is a much bigger incentive.

brilliant... i have dual fuel with my energy supplier but you can't pay both bills at the same time, you have to make two separate transactions...
@fixer1234 yeah, its just got me angry is all
i'll have a beer and forget about it until tomorrow when their next terrible email comes in

As for somebody flagging the word "nipple" that is ridiculous, given there are at least 11 meanings for this word. If I had seen the flag (I was having a snooze) I would have rejected it.

Is anybody really offended by that

apparently so

8:02 PM
@Burgi, Your energy supplier can't divide up your payment for two services they provide? What third world country did you say you live in? There are computers that can do that for the last many decades.

@cazc_941 he is a dragon and lizards don't have them so...
@fixer1234 welcome to england
wtf...
the manhole cover has just collapsed in the carpark

@Burgi, is your energy supplier just a middle man for one of the fuels, providing the "convenience" of dealing with a single provider for all of your fuel needs? Hey, tell them that the only way your system is able to provide separate checks to them is if they provide you with separate bills.

a guy has driven over it and it has shattered

@Burgi, see? They couldn't maintain it because they never received your £2.40. It's your fault.

@fixer1234 this is the one in my apartment's carpark
apparently joiners fix manhole covers now...

8:22 PM
@Burgi Was he driving a tank or something? They shouldn't shatter under the normal weight of a car.

@DavidPostill a fiesta
you don't know when the manhole was installed

@Burgi I could understand if it was a cherry picker :)

the building is 20+ years old

Mar 25 at 22:32, by DavidPostill
we recently had a cherry picker stuck here when they were replacing the gutters. he drove over a manhole cover (which broke under the weight) and his front wheel sank into the hole and got struck. they had to jack up the truck first on it's stabilisers, then with another jack on bricks and let the tire down before they could get a steel plate under the wheel. was about 3 hours of amusement for the residents.

his girlfriend went and stood on it i had to shout out of the window for her to move

8:25 PM
That was a bit daft.

@DavidPostill, I'm glad you clarified the cherry picker comment. I thought maybe you were biased against farm workers and were making a snide comment about all of them being really fat.

fat and drunk on cider

@fixer1234 lol.

apparently i've used 8 cubic metres of water

8:40 PM
@Burgi Over what time period? That is only 40 bathfulls :)

since april
for a single person does that sound normal?

32000 cups of tea :)

@DavidPostill April, May, June, July...? 40 bathfulls?
factor in dishes, toilet, drinking water, you're probably showering every 3-4 days? :P
or bathing

@DavidPostill that sounds about right

It doesn't sound unreasonable:

We measure water in cubic metres (1 cubic metre = 220 gallons), but just how
far does a cubic metre go?
10 baths
2 hours running a hosepipe
4000 cups of tea
100 toilet flushes
30 showers
10 washing machine loads

8:43 PM
@Burgi, that would all be accounted for by 375 cups of coffee per day. If you're a programmer, that would be about right.

i don't drink coffee but i do drink tea

Well, then you don't qualify as a programmer.

I seem to have used 75M^3 of water during the last 12 months.
So 6.25 M^3 per month
That is 208 liter per day. Which seems absurb. Even with 50-100 ltr per day going to plants

@fixer1234 not even a british one?
@Hennes maybe you have a leak?

@Burgi That is below low for a 1 person household 8 m3 over 4 months is 24 cubic metres per year.

8:48 PM
i am at work 5 days a week

I wouldn't mind being at work 7 days a week, using bionic hands that never hurt or get tired to type, with people who take care of changing my clothes, washing my body, exercising my body for me, feed my body, etc. while I code

i'm just waiting for the scream or crash as some walks over the manhole cover
@allquixotic sounds grim

@Burgi, we just had a water bill that was double the normal amount. It turned out to all be from a toilet flapper that wasn't making a tight seal. If your bill is unusually high, check toilets by putting some food coloring in the tank and seeing if it leaks into the bowl. Even the "lifetime" flappers need to be replaced every so many years.

@DavidPostill or 1000l for normal people

@allquixotic, I used to be like that. Then I retired and discovered that work is over-rated.

8:58 PM
@fixer1234 not if the alternative is to live like a pauper; I'm really not interested in being poor, and deciding not to work won't be feasible until there's a universal basic income
I will have to work every day of the rest of my life (minus a little vacation) to avoid having assets repossessed, etc
but I'd rather do that than sit around going "oh, I can't afford a new graphics card, I can't afford a new washing machine, I can't afford that game"

Windows 10 questions: Can I use a DVD instead of a flash drive as a recovery disc?
Can I safely delete the Windows 10 ESD files in Disk Cleanup if I do so?

@allquixotic move to canada

@allquixotic, then it's great that you work at something you enjoy.

(Asking because I just bought an external DVD drive and I'm wondering if I can use it this way.)
On the upside, this means that Astaroth won't need a DVD drive.

@bwDraco, are you talking about using it as the location of the recovery code or as scratch/storage media?

9:06 PM
As a recovery drive for Windows 10 refresh/reset.
It's an LG (HLDS) USB 2.0 DVD writer, model GE24.
I have a large stack of blank DVDs and I want to put them to use.

it's GoT time! \o/

@fixer1234 I'm asking because Windows 10 asks for a flash drive rather than a DVD when creating recovery media.
The question is essentially, "can I still use a DVD to do this?"
I'm much more confident in DVDs than flash drives for archival storage.

ok now i'm poor again
i've paid all my utilities and council tax...

@bwDraco, I'm not familiar with whether recovery requires writing to anything besides the disk you're trying to recover, and if it does, whether it has the option to specify a location. I would think any drive would be fine if no writing is required, but its interesting that Windows doesn't offer the option.

Have you tried using a DVD?

9:17 PM
@bwDraco just burn the iso

@bwDraco, I only use Windows to print coupons for my wife because they only work in Windows. But I keep Win 7 for that. I've avoided Win 10.

win10 is nice
they are slowly working their way through the UI

windows needs more configuration options
no i3 support = bad OS

the BMW or the intel chip?

bmw
can't install it on my car

9:21 PM
lol

@Burgi, I don't like the concept of MS controlling everything; issues like installing updates at MS's convenience and rebooting while you're in the middle of stuff, or the telemetry and data mining.

@Avery, do you feel duty-bound to spread the word on open source?

oof
honestly I'd very likely be happy with windows if it wasn't for the ludicrous privacy and telemetry stuff

you get what you pay for with open source

I use the open-source solution when it makes sense to, and a lot of times, it does. However, I don't really feel Linux is ready for mainstream desktops.

9:25 PM
when did you last use it?

macOS and Win10 have the advantage that 99.9% of the time everything works out of the box without any faff

%0.1 of the times you're trying to set up a development environment

heh

go, python, node, pebble... absolutely painful.
weirdly, I've found out that it's much easier to install stuff on arch than on windows or on any other distro.
thanks to aur.

i got node working after the 3rd reinstall

9:26 PM
macos has brew that does pretty much same

i'd not ticked all the options
you've got to consider, would you be happy to leave your gran with a laptop running linux so she could do skype or pay her bills online or would you find a windows/apple offering easier to leave her with?

@Burgi, Linux needs some more polish to be more user friendly for non-techies, so the manual intervention can be a pain in the butt. But all in all, I like Linux better than even Win 7. I find that I hate going back to Windows when I need to. Linux is more fun to use, even though the UI on the main applications is often less refined that the MS counterparts.
@Burgi, in terms of what to leave with granny, Linux would require a lot more of your time helping with routine maintenance, so that gives you more opportunity to spend time with her.

lol, interesting way of looking at it :)
but you see my point though?

@Burgi, the mainstream distros have a lot of updating and other intervention. But for really modest requirements, something like Puppy can be fine. Once it's set up, there isn't much that needs to be done to it routinely.

i'll be honest i'd probably give my gran (if i had any left) a tablet of some description

9:42 PM
@Burgi, that's very thoughtful. Then the NSA could keeps tabs on her and make sure she's always fine.

lol
the only downside is the diminished motor control

Your granny is controlling motors?

you know what i mean

Oh, I thought she was working construction or something. BTW, can't easy access options be configured in Android?

idk, i've never used them
