@Bob so its on 4gb?

Bob
2:01 PM
@Burgi ...this gets weirder, cause JSON is utf-8 by default :P

This is a windows laptop with edge,mozilla isntalled with latest flash player.Im trying to login to the site but i don't get the sign in option iteslf.support.mozilla.org/t5/Fix-problems-with-websites/… support.mozilla.org/t5/Procedures-to-diagnose-and-fix/…
tried the solution on these two sites and after disabling hardware acceleration it loaded with login option but once i refresh the page again the login option disappears

Bob
maybe just saving as the wrong encoding
@JourneymanGeek single 2 GB stick, one empty slot

ah
so could go up to 4 is he can scrounge another stick

Bob
@JourneymanGeek pretty sure that's cause 2011 :P

that's actuallly pretty good

Bob
2:02 PM
@JourneymanGeek yea, I linked him a $9 stick on ebay

chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/35922431#35922431 is this a good question or the answer will be given by someone here itself

@Bob its a crazy webapp that is bolted on to wordpress

Bob
I'm a tad worried about weird single/double-sided issues

that's not a question, that's a image.

@Bob SSD would be nice

Bob
2:03 PM
@Burgi keep in mind there's a diff between the encoding it's saved as and the encoding it identifies as. if either is wrong, you'll get wonky results

especially if you can find something suitably cheap and only slightly dodgy

'Please wait while drivers install'
ok so that bit seems to work XD

Bob
@JourneymanGeek yea, suggested that to him before

@Bob I actually consider it the single best upgrade one can make to a system of that era
(of course with a more modern OS than XP or vista)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek he's asking about a GPU now -_-

2:07 PM
@Bob not really worth it IMO

Bob
I know :P
told him if he has trouble watching videos then grab a GT 710/720

Bob
will probably go to his mum anyway

My dad runs something worse and does... most things
Granted he kept threatening to defenestrate toe system for years

Bob
@JourneymanGeek this is what passes for a cheap SSD warehouse1.com.au/epages/shop.sf/en_AU/?ObjectPath=/Shops/…

2:12 PM
@Bob loading loading loading loading....

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ebay.com.au/itm/… :P

blinks
That is beyond dodgy

Bob
lol
I almost want one just to see what happens
but knowing my luck it'd probably fry the SATA controller
@JourneymanGeek link to the one you got?

No longer in stock tho

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ebay.com.au/itm/…

2:20 PM
@Bob my dad's been running the 120gb model with no real issues

Bob
@JourneymanGeek how would you rate their performance? :P
seq transfer, random..?

@Bob I think I posted graphs here before

Bob
@JourneymanGeek 120 costs a lot more, and isn't really needed here
might get him to install chromeos

Aliexpress has a kingdian S200/60gb for about 30USD with free shipping
and they have benchmarks there

Bob
@JourneymanGeek eh, 41 AUD on the ebay link, close enough
wait. S200? S180? bleh.
idk

2:26 PM
@Bob newer models than mine
still the main consideration here is relative cheapness ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek cheapness... if it wasn't a pricing error, I might've just gotten a couple of 1 TB SSDs for $210 ea

lol
yeah

Bob
let's see if that's real or not. eh, worst case a refund.

@Bob price sounds logical

Bob
@JourneymanGeek 210 AUD? ozbargain.com.au/node/296253

2:37 PM
and meh, I think those SSDs have done what I needed them to do.

Bob
I got one of each. Cause when I went back for a second, the Extreme Pro was sold out :(

@Bob 41 dollars for the chineseium ones

Bob
But yea that'll let me expand my VM storage a fair bit.
@JourneymanGeek Oh, I mean the 1 TB ones. It sounds too low.
But we'll see :P

eheheh

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I almost want to grab one to set up windows2go on it :P

2:38 PM
I might do a few peoperly dodgy aliexpress orders once I have a job again ;p
@Bob yeah, they do sound rediculously cheap

Bob
@JourneymanGeek worst that can happen is I get refunded :P

looks like draco repcapped yesterday cause of the ryzen question \o/
@Bob true

2:57 PM
Ryzen question?

48
Q: How can a processor be made faster with a "software" update?

Arthur P. R.The new AMD processors Ryzen are out on the market and unfortunately they seem to lack in gaming. Intel processors are obviously still faster for gaming. People of course weren't in favour of this and AMD made a statement saying that they're updating the firmware or software for speeding up Ryzen...

Ah that one

@JourneymanGeek yea well my forehead eyebrows would re-cap at least that many times :-)

@Psycogeek i'd vote to close as eyebrows aren't a valid answer to any technical question... ;)

I was following what he was saying about it, and Me i would rather wait till the dust settles, then get an analisis (the 6mo rule) but shorter preliminary analisis of what to watch-out for is helpful.
just needs balance

3:07 PM
i just got a recruitment email for a "Lamp Developer"

I got the dimentions on the hole (storage) available in my RV for my computer under the dinette (seats) - Length 21.8" , width 41.8" , height 11.5" , to get a case that is smaller

my first thought was "hasn't edison already developed the lamp..."

the haf amazon.com/gp/product/B00FFJ0H3Q/ref=ask_ql_qh_dp_hza is to tall to fit under there i think ?
@Burgi but edison didnt put bluetooth in it

heh

Troll answer? I'm, not sure I believe it superuser.com/a/1186232/337631

3:21 PM
@DavidPostill I imagine the cable is also gold plated ;)

Since when Chrome can view PDF files?
Can't find extension to disable this...

@DavidPostill I used this extension before.
@DavidPostill Is it capable of viewing PDFs online without requiring downloading them?

@Boris_yo Of course not. It needs to download the file to render it.
There has been a built in PDF viewer since 2011
> The recent releases of Google Chrome (6 and up) have PDF support built-in
Chrome is now v56 or something.

@DavidPostill Well, not extension I have been using. It does not download file for viewing. It may keep it in temporary cache file but after closing PDF it deletes cache file. I like it because of it's organization.

3:38 PM
@Boris_yo Where do you think the temp cache file comes from? Hint: it's downloaded from the internet.

@DavidPostill I know. The file gets deleted after viewing, helping my organization. This is not the case with Chrome's PDF viewer. That's what I am trying to say.
Can't disable.

@Boris_yo So file a bug report with the extension author. Or uninstall it. Or use a decent browser like Firefox :)

@DavidPostill This is Chrome's plugin you were talking about.

@DavidPostill is posible, HE 8T drive on a USB , lowered down into his well, with 4 repeaters ?? people have done crasier
but then he would be mentioning, having to build the cable, or buy actual good ones (they dont exist), and how he has to get power down there to hub or repeat it.

@Psycogeek why is the cable twice the length too?

3:52 PM
@djsmiley2k uhh would you believe balanced terminations?

@Boris_yo In Chrome, enter, "chrome:plugins" in the address bar, then click the Disable link under the "Chrome PDF Viewer" plugin entry.

@Boris_yo There is a bug. Read the full thread.

for a moment then i had 1337 rep

@djsmiley2k We can arrange for you to have it again :)

9 mins ago, by DavidPostill
@Boris_yo There is a bug. Read the full thread.

I can't reorder youtube vids by dragging them around the playlist anymore :(
maybe I never could, and I imagined it, i dunno :D

@djsmiley2k That's an imaginary bug then :)

4:14 PM
@DavidPostill Thanks. I placed check mark to have Chrome open PDF with default viewer and it worked.
@djsmiley2k Reminds me of that recent movie ... Mad Max

If anyone has an answer to that question superuser.com/questions/1186972/…
this is one of the reason I dread msoft

you need to assoicate mdb files with access
no different in all distros tbf

how @djsmiley2k?

in commandline?

in the same pc, with a different user

4:21 PM
TRWTF is Access

it is doing great
AllQuixotic
TRWTF
Access is not a db
it is this

Watching a user moving towards nuking all their data... :/
not you btw @AndyK
@AndyK click 'open file with this program'.... select access.... done
Thanks for the upvote.

Anyone else having trouble with the SE Android app?

I'm telling my man-a to stop using access, from now
on
getting there, slowly

ah it could be flat files
even worse
or excel or osmething, eating them number formats, nom nom nom
7 hr wait time on reviews sigh
wish that timer worked :(

4:30 PM
THE SUN IT BLINDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

that's what's happening right now in the company I worked for

yeah wtf is with the weather
I had to go move my car, and it was like actually nice outside :O

see ya guys

4:43 PM
bai @AndyK

5:08 PM
beware of pasting zalgotext into the # prompt

o_O??
What is the # prompt?
we talking root? Be aware of pasting any text to the root prompt...

well most text you can read first

yus
however, zalgo is... well zalgo
if your prompt is converting it into something else, you've also got issues.

You can safely paste into the PowerShell prompt, though; Zalgo just becomes boxes and line returns are pasted as line returns but do not run the command

I'd believe you can safely paste zalgo into any prompt
after all, it's not anything but zalgo
it doesn't 'convert' into normal ascii just because you've pasted it

5:12 PM
Indeed

if your prompt does do crap like that, be very very afraid
that's the kind of thing that caused @burgi's dash/hypen error

@djsmiley2k lol

@DavidPostill I know it's not exactly the same, but still ;)

PowerShell automatically handles fancy dashes and smart quotes as normal dashes and normal quotes, respectively ;)

not displaying/hiding/changing how unicode characters are seen can onlycause pain.

5:20 PM
@djsmiley2k it wasn't an error, just a display bug
and the ONLY thing to go wrong in the entire deployment

Ah, glad to hear it mostly went smoothly

the marketing material hasn't gone out yet...

:D
my friend in london has finally decided to leave his role, which seems to run simularly to @Burgi (fire fighting everything, all hell)
maybe you can both do a job swap? :D
Also, when is an error not an error? When it's a display bug!
:)

Are you absolutely sure your shell won't hose you? echo 'e̮̠̣ͫ̿ͦ̄̿́c̟̼͕̗̞͍̤͓̀̃ͤ̾ͬ̋͊͟h̨̙̃ͯ̽̒̂ȍ̠͔̣̱͍̻̇ ̳̭̻̥̒̀͢r̴̡̛͎̝͔̮̼͖͉ͥ̋͒ͧ̎m̧̝̜̥̖̺̣̣ͣͮ͞ ̲̩̖̩̗͍̝̥ͩ͊ͫ̽-̘̩̬̹̜̝͚͍ͩ̑͌r̷̢̟̰͇͔̹̰̪̪͚̉ͫ͆̅͜f̹̬̗ͪ̎͢͢ ̼̠ͬ̐̂/̗̻͓̹̙̣̐̀̀̆ͧ̇͌̅͜'|tr -d '\200-\377'

if you care to write one that isn't rm -rf then i'll run it to test

5:25 PM
it's echo rm -rf /

Safe :)

smiley@server~$ echo 'e.........c................h.......o........ .......r...............m........... ............-...........r................f....... ...../...............'
:)

root@e4ade7343ed3:/# rm -rf /
rm: it is dangerous to operate recursively on '/'
rm: use --no-preserve-root to override this failsafe
... safe

:)
@CaffeineAddiction don't do /*

@CaffeineAddiction: Like I was going to post something actually dangerous.

5:28 PM
@Joshua why not ... i just ran it
its fine
its interesting if you run it w/ --no-preserve-root
it limits your commands available to:
root@e4ade7343ed3:/#
! cd egrep fi la readonly true
./ command elif for let return type
: compgen else function ll select typeset
[ complete enable getopts local set ulimit
[[ compopt esac grep logout shift umask
]] continue eval hash ls shopt unalias
alias coproc exec help mapfile source unset
which is odd ... because then ls doesnt work ... even though it says its an available command
... this feels a lot like trying to convince someone in wow that press [alt] + F4 enables godmode

5:50 PM
CMD> DELETE "internet.exe"
Y U NO WORK!!!!!!11111111111111111

6:08 PM
@Bob: my UK 4G sim card died so I won't be able to do any 4G testing in Aus till I get a local prepaid one :-(
And even then I would have to get 3 to compare all the networks instead of just roaming onto each

:(
no fun
Is the weather nice?
When you coming home?
meow?

@TOWMN when is @Bob taking you for a saucer of milk/beer?

@djsmiley2k yes
@djsmiley2k dunno, I don't want to come home

@djsmiley2k don't tell him about the wall we are building to stop him from getting back in!

6:23 PM
;)
the great channel wall?

and the ultra amazing 6G phones the government gave us all for free

@Burgi he won't, cause they don't exist
Also screw walls, we have planes

Q: Choose WiFi channels with many weak or few strong competitors?

SlizzeredThis question is somewhat related to Is it better to choose a more-crowded WiFi channel or one with a strong competitor? and 2.4GHz WiFi channel selection when all the non-overlapping channels are crowded but these do omit certain aspects which I believe to be relevant for my scenario. Although ...

wow
that's a well written and interesting question

Whoops - accidently reviewed this as no action needed

A: Make Language change specific to window/app not whole system (Windows 8.1)

Peter GoedtkindtLanguages are such badly implemented on windows compared to macos, where (except for microsoft products), most programs come multilingual. The problem I have with windows is that I have installed US system, but a Swiss French keyboard configured. whenever I download/install software, it comes in ...

Flagged it now, but whoops XD

Yesterday we were amused to see this post on Reddit’s sysadmin forum: The post Does Anyone Actually Visit Stack Overflow’s Home Page? appeared first on Stack Overflow Blog.

@Blogbot StackOverflow has a Homepage?

8:27 PM
> We apologize for any inconvenience, but an unexpected error occurred while you were browsing our site. It’s not you, it’s us. This is our fault. Detailed information about this error has automatically been recorded and we have been notified.

...and I'm getting ready to take the test.

Sites are down

I will not be available for the next two hours.

@DavidPostill seeing the same here

> This site is currently in read-only mode; we'll return with full functionality soon. Follow @StackStatus or visit our status blog for more info.

8:28 PM
No repro.

> A new SQL cluster member took us hard down on an unexpected reboot - we're investigating.
Seems to be back

yup
that was fun.
(i wonder if nick queried the db too hard about visitors to the home page ;))
@bwDraco good luck with the test, whatever that is :o

8:48 PM
Ugh... that moment when you have to find a non-https website to browse to before the public wifi at your work will kick in the password gateway. :|

do you work with @null? :D

Perhaps?

:D
they have been asking about portal stuff and http vs https filtering lately

Oh right... yea.

9:35 PM
@MichaelFrank btw There is a site that is really good for that its called neverssl.com. They promise to stay http.
Ok got everything how I want it on my captive portal except one thing...when you search google on my AP and then click a search result that happens to be http it will send them to my login page like I want...however it doesn't load fully. I mean all the text is there but there are no images or css styling...anybody know why that would be? Or how to fix it?

@TOWMN they are super secret and you have to be here to get one! ;)

@NULL Well all the js is served via https. Load a google page and look at the network traffic.

Bob
@TOWMN :(

@bwDraco good luck! let us know how it went
@NULL i'm adding that one to my arsenal of useful sites.

9:50 PM
@DavidPostill But I am not using js I just have style.css and background.png and then my page. My nginx server is serving it when http is requested. It works fine when someone types an http site in the browser.

!!/help afk

@bwDraco afk: Set an afk message: /afk <message>. Invoke /afk again to return.

The first thing you should do is probably pull out your phone and ask people online for help :) — Ben Sutton 32 mins ago

Of course not.

1 hour later…
11:09 PM
I am not able to pass the technical test. At least some valuable experience was gained.
The test introduced me to Codility, though. I'll be using it to hone my skills.

did it give a result right away?
also you can't know everything, so don't stress too much about it
you never know, they might have a junior position that you meet the requirements of so don't give up hope just yet

11:36 PM
Completed one of three tasks with a passing score on that task, but was unable to finish the rest on time.
Had a partial solution on the second task that did not compile (could not work out the errors in time)
Could not start the third one at all.
