3:20 PM
I am about to use MSDOS again. I found my boot floppies for the portable IBM XT. Yay!

Bob
...do you still have an XT? :P

Yes
512 MB RAM (which takes about a minute to check)
two 360k drives
build in CRT
It is a portable with a solid steel bar to lift it.
4.77MHz XT next to a modern Skylake i5 K :)

@Hennes t3h powah!
actually 512MB of RAM sounds like a lot for the era...

KiB. drat
A mere .5MB already takes a minute for that thing to check :)

3:35 PM
Hard disks of the tine didn't even had that much capacity.

Bob
Edge needs to go die in a fire.
6

Standard hard drive (Seagate ST-412) had 10 MB capacity.
lol @ "go die in a fire" (again)
@Bob Webdev?

Bob
@bwDraco No. Just trying to download the bloody insider preview ISO.
For devs, Edge is somewhat better than IE.
The devtools are still only a mildly polished turd, unfortunately.
Apparently Edge can't handle a file download.
(This is an Azure VM, so single-core.)
Also, Edge downloads don't seem to report current speed...

At least you can draw pretty sketches onto the page while you're waiting for your download to complete

Bob
It is perfectly good for downloading Firefox, though!

3:43 PM
@Bob That is due to quality checks. Which is done by this thurd grader:

Bob
@OliverSalzburg I tried half a dozen times. 0%, 0%, 2%, 0%, 11%, 0%...
And the thing locks up so you can't pause the download, and canceling doesn't delete the partial. And can't close Edge. And I can't manually delete the partial until I end the content process.
This all on the previous (TH2) "stable" Enterprise build...
*facepalm*
/rant

32.1 MB/s JESUS

Bob
@varfirstName Azure.

It's a VM

oh. poo.

Bob
3:47 PM
I think it peaked at 48 MB/s. Then dropped to 11 at the end.

I wonder if the download speed is restricted by the disk speed there

Bob
Not only is it sitting on a giant pipe, it might well be in the same DC as the Microsoft server it's downloading from.

Sounds like it

Bob
Maybe even on the same host! :P

3:48 PM
Oh I guarantee it..

Probably network interface contention.

@bob tracert !

I need a credit card..

yup.

I'm a minor, but old enough to have a bank account

3:50 PM
@Bob: so why do you have an Azure server?

With my bank, they don't let me have a checking account at all, don't let me have a debit card, nor a credit card.

Bob

I can only take out money 6 times without fees

Bob
@bwDraco For fun and profit.
(Because my VS subscription gives me 50 USD/month and the ability to run Windows client versions on there for dev/test purposes... so I might as well use it.)
@varfirstName Get a new bank.

I'm at TD now. Thinking of going to PNC
@Bob is there a problem with that image?

Bob
3:52 PM
Yes, actually -_-

@varfirstName the arrows show that

Bob
Ok. Enterprise installer won't upgrade on Enterprise N.
Standard installer only has Pro and Home.
I can grab 1607 off MSDN, but that's not insiders...

@Bob Are you able to go to Settings and join insiders build?

Bob
@varfirstName Builds never show up there. I had trouble with that last month on a different VM.
Eventually went the MSDN route to get it to 1607 but I want a preview one now.

@Bob were you on the fast ring?

Bob
3:54 PM
Ya.
I can't even get 1607. This one is currently on 1511 (new VM).

Why can't you get 1607?

Bob
Probably because Enterprise. Or because it's in an Azure VM.

I've got Enterprise
It's not that
Enterprise N might not be able to

Bob
@varfirstName Entirely possible!
Considering I can't seem to find an Enterprise N preview build...

Have you considered posting on StackExchange- oh. oh wait..

3:57 PM
@varfirstName just seeing your message in the chat from yesterday I think. It's not a problem, I don't try to be greedy with rep. I do have a full time job and also 3 kids and a wife so I've not been on SuperUser anything hard core -- just as I can. There have been times I've went without a little sleep here and there when I get on an addictive kick and just cannot stop it.

Bob
lol

Bob

Q: Windows 10 Insider Preview Build has never updated

Alex ChanceDisclaimer: I know there are similar questions to this, but I have yet to find a solution/answer. I have a Windows 10 VM that I set up in Azure exactly 1 week ago. I am using my MSDN account since I get free money to spend in Azure (Yay me!). I signed up for Windows Insider preview on the same ...

Now @DavidPostill is the man with what he's done around here with all his stats, etc. so I'll be voting for him when moderator election comes around -- he helped give me advice when I first started using SuperUser but there are certainly many great people on SuperUser for sure.

Bob
Maybe I'll just install Enterprise preview over the top and see what happens.

3:58 PM
Sounds like a plan, @Bob
@Bob do you have any MSDN support tickets?

Bob
@varfirstName I have two. Took me a month and about 20 phone calls to get them to activate the support contract -_-

Bob
Probably not gonna bother with that, though. Entirely too much trouble.

My company was told we had no support when we have over 1K employees with 2tickets per employee

Bob
ouch
Yea, I had a fun runaround.
I'm on their new Visual Studio "cloud" subscription. Annual subscription thing. Very clearly comes with support tickets, and instructions on activation on the dashboard.

4:00 PM
And that the sector for support policy wouldn't open till 8:30
it was 8:21 ffs

Bob
Australian support team thought they only supported MSDN, not VS subscriptions.
US MSDN team didn't support AU but at least knew what a VS sub was.
Twitter 'support' seems to have gone... somewhere.
Email to AU support was similarly useless.
Email to US support, with a rather long rant/complaint... seems to have gotten somewhere, I dunno. That was two weeks in, and I was sick of it.

@PIMP_JUICE_IT I can't believe you only started 10mo ago

Bob
Oh, and their tools didn't recognise my subscription ID and I was passed to their tech support to activate the contract, back to MSDN support to verify the subscription ID, etc.... one time I got passed around the world (AU => US => India? 13 transfers) and call quality dropped like a whale in freefall. Somehow was passed through Office365 support at some point.
/rant (again) :P

I am wondering if I should buy cheapo headphones

Bob
@HackToHell Depends what kind.
$, brand, purpose
e.g. the Xiaomi Pistons (full, not 'basic' versions) are good and cheap.
Beats is crap and expensive.

4:10 PM
@HackToHell i went to ASDA (wallmart) and got a £12 pair for work

Buy the Sennheiser Orpheus

I broke the SHE3590 I got, I just want one for light music and work calls
So want one with a mic

ah ok

I break these 12$ earphones too soon
So I'm thinking those 2 or 3$ ones :D
from china
@bob you get those right ?

I've got a really bulky / blocky headset

4:12 PM
Are they super bad or is it okay

$23
It's got a phenomenal mic tho
clearest i've ever heard on a <$30 headset
I've got a $30-40 standalone mic somewhere
but I need a mount for it

Bob
@HackToHell No. I use the Xiaomi Hybrid at the moment. Had the Piston 2 and 3 before. @JourneymanGeek is using 2 IIRC.
For comparison, it's similar to Sony earphones in the ~$30-$70 range.

There's a Mi Basic heaphones for 500 bucks
Not sure if that's good
can't find reviews

Bob
I've had the $2-$3 randos before... if you're really lucky you can find one that sounds alright, but they break quickly anyway. Most of the time, they just sound horribly muffled.

get a nice pair of klipsch headphones

they'll run you about $60

Bob
@HackToHell They're... somewhat acceptable. But not great. Can sound a bit hollow iirc.

@Bob Oh then a ~15$ one might be better

Bob
Actually I dunno what the Basic ones sound like... I tried the Piston 2 paperwhite so I assume the cheap version of others have similar-ish problems.

what currency is that?

4:16 PM
@varfirstName not in a position to buy for that much :D

Bob
@HackToHell My personal recommendation for the $5-$30 range? Xiaomi.
(that's AUD from me)

Oh I am talking in USD
OKay lemme get those then @bob

@HackToHell What currency is on that site?

INR

Bob
@varfirstName INR probably

4:17 PM
Indian Rupee
There's this weird heaphones

Try Piston IIIs, you won't be disappointed

But its outa by budget tho

Amazon has them for $25 a pop

Bob
@HackToHell btw, the "pro" ones on the in site seem to be the hybrids
@bwDraco I tried them. I was disappointed.

Bob
4:18 PM
Compared to Piston 2, and Hybrid... Piston 3 was rather... flat.

$24 direct from Amazon (no fakes!).

@Bob Oh it's super expensive, perhaps when I get a full time job ^_^

I've had mine for more than a year and can't be happier.

Bob
@bwDraco Or, he could buy the Hybrids straight off the official Xiaomi site, for about the same price (once you factor in shipping).

4:19 PM
Shame they don't see the Pistons 2 anymore :(
It was in the perfect price range
And it's on everyone's wall of fame

Bob
@HackToHell Still available on iBuyGou, but it's pretty expensive now... about the same price as the current Hybrids/Pros.
I've never tried the Capsule ones...

@varfirstName Look at this guy's profile superuser.com/users/536125/jonno

I don't see how those Capsule ones stay on the ear
It looks ... weird
like them custom IEMs

Bob
Oh, Piston Air. That was the other name for them.

Oh wow, @PIMP_JUICE_IT
Holy crap
I got the Revival badge w/o even trying

4:42 PM
user image
2

Bob
Ok, installing Enterprise utterly failed.
I think it nuked Azure scripts. And RDP settings.

@CanadianLuke Did I upvote that? I think I did.

Maybe

This stack has a lot of users who are quick to downvote

@Bob whoops

5:14 PM
@varfirstName Well, don't ask horrible questions and it may fix itself :-P JK

I've never asked a single question
Hello, Leathe

@Rahul2001 are you about?
he's gone again....

@Burgi Back for a sec
my mom is telling me to go to sleep

5:29 PM
tell her you are asleep and her shouting is what is keeping you awake
i'm just doing my commit to the repo
its not very good
brb food

6:10 PM
Damn, GY!BE is so awesomely amazing!
I never get tired of this album:
@JourneymanGeek By "your roomie" you mean Ash, right?

I don't suppose anyone happens to be exceptionally well versed in IE's internet options? I've added a URL to the trusted sites list, and it's still getting blocked. My Google-fu is also failing me pretty hard.

@Sidney Just to get the obvious out of the way: It's getting blocked by IE and not at a proxy or something, right?

I'm fairly certain. IE is popping up a window telling me it explicitly blocked the content and to add it to the trusted sites list.

6:42 PM
@Hennes WENDY'S IS PEEEEEEEOPLE!!!

Come eat [at] wendies.

7:05 PM
@dog was it you that bluescreened win 10 with a usb device?

@djsmiley2k Apparently a Kindle Paperwhite will do it...

7:25 PM
@PIMP_JUICE_IT <blush> Thanks.

@djsmiley2k What's the count so far? I've heard it breaks webcams, killed by USB devices, and they've managed to kill remote management for domains...

8:20 PM
Well, if you invest your $xxx/user per month, then everything works!
.... Whoops, forgot the sarcasm tag

I truely do wonder, would that leaf blower be just a little bit quieter if i shove it up that jerkheads A--? like the muffler it should have had.

9:45 PM
@Mokubai It wrecked at least one Hyper-V guest for me

I couldn't make it shorter for workplace.SE, because it's too many details

@allquicatic one does not notice the presence of the "long term" benefits, in analisis texts. When analising such birds in hand vrses many birds in bush, be sure to add up all the paid leave, quickly aquired retire or medical benefits and any other guarenteed amenities that may not exist the same in fly by investament corporations.

10:28 PM
some crappy paying goverment jobs pay off better in the tenure areas, but is not noticed much until those services are more nessisary. Take military for example walking away in a mere 18-20 years with a continual (small) payment, that continues after the person is thereafter in private sector workplace.

10:44 PM
@allquicatic I addressed a little bit of it in a really winding and indecisive way

@BenN thank you :)

11:02 PM
@ThatBrazilianGato yes.

11:22 PM
@djsmiley2k my maudio fast track does that

Bob
11:45 PM
@allquicatic IMO, happiness trumps all. depends whether the pay delta is enough to outweigh the not-insignificant risk of a worse environment...
If you think you don't really want to leave, then doing so might not be the best idea.
Heh. Pretty much what @BenN said.
@Dog Turns out, it's really hard to get SC info on non-Samsung phones (e.g. Huawei)
And by hard I mean impossible, afaict
