Bob
02:00
@JourneymanGeek that too :P
@Bob also these use a standard cart, which is nice
@JourneymanGeek I've been using them for about 6-1/2 years. Had a Pilot Varsity disposable at the beginning, but got a Pelikan M200 shortly afterwards.
and has a nice heft
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek ya, I need to pick up some blue-black though :P
@bwDraco the varsities are to me the 'gateway' pen
02:00
Again, why not get a converter and fill from a bottle?
Bob
Bob
that's the one this comes with
and it looks nice
@bwDraco I have a bottle. We tend to pick up random pens for fun
Hmm.
I have a black al star as my nice pen, and a bottle of noodlers
Bob
Bob
@bwDraco because the carts are cheap, they're convenient, and they don't sell this ink in bottles
02:01
@Bob What???
> they don't sell this ink in bottles
Bob
Bob
I've got more bottles of ink than I know what to do with, but they're not the same ink obviously
I have two bottles of that Pilot Iroshizuku ink that I'm not using because my FP is rubbish.
Bob
Bob
@bwDraco it's daiso
they sell random crap
Bob
Bob
my local ones have been completely out of this particular pen and ink for weeks now
Bob
Bob
no idea when (or if) they'll restock
@MichaelFrank That's pricy stuff. I mainly use Pelikan Edelstein.
@Bob I swear that's part of the daiso business model
I have a cheaper (~US$70) Pilot Prera that gets Sheaffer Skrip ink.
I tend to pick up spares of stuff cause I don't know if it'll be available the next time I go there
Bob
Bob
02:03
anyway, I usually just use Quink cause it's easy to find at the local big store
@bwDraco we're talking about 2 dollar pens for the record
I know, I know.
so... actually in the same price range as a varsity
Bob
Bob
lessee
Parker/Quink Black, Lamy Blue, Noodler HoD & Bulletproof Black
not very fancy :P
gotta find some good blue-black sometime
My main pen would actually cost some US$444 (~S$600) from the dealer I got it at today.
02:06
tbh, my "have handy" pen's a g2 ._.
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek cheaper
vpen is like $8 here
or was it $6
I paid $299 (~S$400) when I got it several years back.
Yeah. Fountain pens can get really pricy.
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek heh. I went with the refillable hi-tecpoint => jetpens.com/…
02:07
@Bob I'm pretty sure it was under a fiver when I got it
and there's some things about the vpen/varisty that are nice.
@Bob We pay about US$20 for an assorted 7-pack.
Bob
Bob
@bwDraco those don't exist here
If you refill mod it, it will happily take any liquid ink and never clog.
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek ebay.com.au/itm/…
nice pocket pen
@Bob the g2 is reliable and never leaks ;p
02:08
!! caaaat
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek these take FP ink :P
and I never keep pens in my pocket ;p
!! caat
Bob
Bob
02:09
never had a leak from them either
@JourneymanGeek Not a huge fan of rollerballs.
Okay, I get it. Life goes on now!
(pocket? what pocket? I have keys, phone and wallet there am a dog.)
More progress on my crappy game
Turn down sound if you value your ears
Jan 26 '15 at 4:16, by DragonLord
I've had my M600 sit in storage for months at a time and it would start up right away, zero skipping
Still true. Also holds with my Pelikan Toledo M700.
So how much trouble (or lack thereof) have you had with your cheap pens? I know people like to get cheap stuff to play around with :)
02:13
I use a blue pen with a rubber tip so it works on stuff with touchscreens
wierdly none
@JourneymanGeek Yeah, Lamy AL-stars are always reliable.
Had a Pelikano (P460) that was nothing but trouble for me.
the older/shitty daiso FPs were actually platinum rivieres, which while cheap, weren't bad
the new ones are too new ;p
I quite literally have had one out of the pack for ... 30 seconds before I told bob
whoops, confused them with Sailor
@bwDraco their low end stuff has got good nibs
02:16
Platinum is one of the few that still make music nibs.
Bob
Bob
@bwDraco eh. some are crap, like the Riviere one from Daiso
the new Daiso one is excellent
not really fond of the slim metal, but it writes perfectly
10 cartridges at an RRP of 400 yen, lol
We routinely pay more than this for ten cartridges.
@bwDraco ^ that's got a picture of the riviere, another daiso model I've not seen in the wild and the daiso metal ones
@JourneymanGeek Happen to have an account there.
Not a fan of bottom-bin stuff.
Tried a few cheap Chinese pens (forgot what brand), didn't like the feel of them (although their nibs were otherwise surprisingly good).
Certainly no match for my M600, but better than my Pilot.
02:20
lol at 「より黒く」, "only black!"
@bwDraco I think you're missing the point ;p
They were too heavy for my taste.
...okay. They were Jinhao pens.
I just didn't like the feel of them.
Bob
Bob
eh, past a certain point you're just paying for the name
fountain pens aren't some amazingly complex magic
02:22
@oldmud0 Google Translate returns "more black". Incidentally, Pelikan makes an ink called 4001 Brilliant Black.
I don't use the 4001 inks any more.
@Bob they're basically slowly controlled leakage ? ;p
Bob
Bob
lol
hm, in transit from facility to facility for almost an hour
A factor against the Pilot Prera is that it has an F nib. Considering that Japanese nibs are generally one grade finer than Western nibs, it's really an EF and writes a bit like a nail.
Bob
Bob
probably from Sydney airport which is about a half hour drive from here...
heh, a nail describes one of mine pretty well
>_>
I actually like fine nibs
Bob
Bob
02:25
the pilot metropolitan iirc
That pen ran me US$60 (S$80) when I got it.
Bob
Bob
lamy safari was too broad at med
@Bob I suppose that's because you're used to Japanese nibs...
Bob
Bob
@bwDraco funnily enough? that safari was my first cartridge pen (after vpen)...
Writing sample?
Bob
Bob
02:26
posted them here a while back I think
cbf trying again now, and my handwriting is messy as all hell anyway
Bob
Bob
(and only gotten worse in the last year... not much writing these days)
Me too ._.
> I picked up one today and used it to practice grinding to XF. I'm contemplating on plugging the end and greasing the threads to turn it into an eyedropper when the cartridge runs out...
I know these are words... but it makes no sense to me.
Bob
Bob
lol
Bob
Bob
@MichaelFrank grinding the tip down to make it finer. eyedropper means refilled with an eyedropper... the entire pen body becomes the ink container
Doesn't really seem too broad to me.
Again, Japanese nibs are finer than Western nibs.
Bob
Bob
lots of extra ink pooling
and writing on lined paper... yea it's broad :P
That's more like flooding.
@MichaelFrank a lot of people just fill a body of a pen with ink, then grease the threads with lithuium grease so it dosen't leak
basically means you have a ton of ink, and its as simple a FP design as you can get
02:32
@JourneymanGeek Me? I prefer integrated piston fillers.
@bwDraco I prefer carts or converters
since I have a bunch of printer ink refilling stuff, refilling a old, washed out cartridge is trivial
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek and it squirts ink all over your pocket :P
@Bob and that.
Yea... that sounds terrifying.
> A 20 track VHS unit from a call center could record 16 parallel bits, plus a data clock and 3 error correction bits. Recording 16 bit data at 2kHz would give a capacity of about 345 GBytes per cassette.
Bob
Bob
02:39
> Arrived at Delivery Facility in SYDNEY - AUSTRALIA SYDNEY - AUSTRALIA 12:28
Wouldn't you love to have 345 gb per cassette?
Not at VHS speed.
Course not, it's not a regular VCR.
It's a recorder historically used in 911 call centers
With a heavily modded VCR, it could be possible.
@Bob ^^^
@oldmud0 You might as well use Ultrium...
@oldmud0 not really, a 4T disk is about the same size weighs a bit more and comes with it's own reader built in , and HDs have had a very good reliability. perfectally good usable ones are like $50usd , a great VHS tape cost about $8 you would need ~10 of them $80 and they dont have built in error correction.
if you put a HD on the dash of your car, it wouldnt melt in the sun either :-)
03:00
@Psycogeek You should be using flash memory for these types of applications.
what 4 TB hdd goes for $50 now??
@oldmud0 a used one.
maybe in 20 years 1 PB drives might be avail to consmr
along with 5 GHz processors
but even new they cost about 109$ this week.
Nothing beats LTO Ultrium for sheer reliability, though.

It's getting late here. Good night.
(Trying to get out of bed earlier.)
everyman-4
@bwDraco How's that working? I normally get out of bed around 6.45-7am
@MichaelFrank School's out and I don't currently have a job, so currently targeting 8 am.
I once tried 5 am. The result was very ugly.
Used to be a night owl, sleeping all the way to noon, but that's now really unlikely to happen again.

Speaking of VCRs, the last VCR in Japan will be produced by the end of July
not to worry, i got a whole truck full of them here, and they aint about to run off the shelves.
"Nobody buys VCRs anymore" even though there are 750k sales a year
Japan is rather outdated
From what I hear, many businesses still use fax
03:46
so, I presume allq knows about this arstechnica.com/information-technology/2016/07/…
@oldmud0 in USA a mail with your digital signature isn't legally binding, a fax on the other hand...
@Braiam it's come up a few times.

and for the first time in history a game came out that wants 18 terraflops of powerfull gpu, and looks pretty much the same as the games that came out in 2009 that ran on 2.4 terraflops.
What, did they finish Crysis 2?
the huge advantge being: the developers can just slop out some poorly optomised junk and everyone pays a bit extra for thier gpu and power bill each month. wel call that a win-win. games are releaced before they are even beta tested.

windows NT? Now that's a name I've not heard in a loooong time

@JourneymanGeek technically, 10 is still NT
"The system uses objects and handles to regulate access to system resources for two main reasons. First, the use of objects ensures that Microsoft can update system functionality, as long as the original object interface is maintained. When subsequent versions of the system are released, you can use the updated object with little or no additional work.

Secondly, the use of objects enables you to take advantage of Windows security. Each object has its own access-control list (ACL) that specifies the actions a process can perform on the object. The system examines an object's ACL each time a
