@Bob I am not experiencing emotions of jealousy for you. Best of luck ;)

it removed the user name and rep so much that the little author box was suspiciously empty

@Burgi review tests are a bit lame

Bob
@Jonno Heh, I eventually put it aside and went home. Tomorrow is gonna be fun.

Q: Wireless Adapter Turning Off Second Monitor

ReallyGoodPieI am having issues with my wireless adapter and my second monitor. When I enable the wireless adapter, my second monitor decides to turn off (no display, it is still powered) or just flicker on and off. I thought it might have been a power supply issue but I have just gone from a 450W PSU to 600W...

that's odd

Bob
Oh wow. The response here worked.
I think that's the first time I found a forum post that actually worked straight off.
Or at least the first time this year.
Also, that was weird. I haven't used this laptop in about a year but I swear the whole PC Settings thing was working before.
> Insert Media
> Some files are missing. Your Windows installation or recovery media will provide those files.
fml.

I had a pretty neat experience the other day
You know when you transfer a Windows key several times, it refuses to unlock unless you go through that horrible phone activation? (other options are not available in Germany)

Bob
ya

In Windows 10, you can simply click "Contact support" and someone from the MS support staff will remote into your system with 123rescue and do the painful work for you

Bob
O_O

9:10 AM
Well, you can probably do it on other versions as well, but I just saw the link and went the naive route
Was pretty cool
I had Home on my new laptop and wanted to convert to Pro, but it refused my key
So he pasted some other key into the box, which worked. After the conversion to Pro, he changed the key to my original one

Bob
@OliverSalzburg Well, at least you found someone at MS with a clue of what they're doing.

cool, that beats trying to get my dog to type in those blasted numbers correctally.

Bob
I'm still waiting on a response from email support. I've given up on phone and chat.

youtu.be/8ucCxtgN6sc?t=213 entertainment company shows younger people what win95 was like, if your computer sucked completely and was disconnected from the web, and no software was installed, and your dumb enough to use a FreeAOL disk?

Ofcourse you used OAL disks. What else would you put your coffee mug on ?

it was bad, but what they are doing here , due to the lack of a time machine, is making it way worse.

Q: Windows 10 RTM OSVersion not returning what I expect

user3477026When call Windows 10 version with: Environment.OSVersion.ToString() Return this Windows 8 and 8.1 version return 6.2 not 6.3 WTF??! Im using Windows 10 RTM (upgrade from Insider with windows update) VS 2015 RC and .Net 4.6 Now i need to get the correct version of windows, any solution?

> Applications not manifested for Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 Insider Preview will return the Windows 8 OS version value (6.2).

Aha...
Thank you :)

thats what it says here too johnkoerner.com/csharp/…

Bob
> In Windows 8.1 and Windows 10, the GetVersion and GetVersionEx functions have been deprecated. In Windows 10, the VerifyVersionInfo function has also been deprecated. While you can still call the deprecated functions, if your application does not specifically target Windows 8.1 or Windows 10, you will get Windows 8 version (6.2.0.0).

A: How to convert Word document to PDF with copy protection

Mister Mo@ jofel. Thank you very much for your answer. I tried to use the link you provided but it didn't work. I think you meant pdf-no-copy.com it says in the site that it is a tool to prevent the copy and paste function in your pdf files by adding DRM restrictions. Thanks James

@DavidPostill gone. I guess the spammers are learning (the wrong thing)

How...?
Thats like... 10 people going to see it or something? o.0

0_0
most of whom probably figured they wanted an empty cinema to do things other than watch a movie in? ;p

revenue - overheads = profit?

10:30 AM
Sounds like it... Actually that sounds like good value when you put it that way.

> The actor at least has company here; Richard Gere's The Benefactor, released at the same time, made an even slighter £25 in box office takings
@DavidPostill movie company economics is complex
they can make a loss even when they profit
Hell, I'm looking for a job cause of that craziness.

If 1 person goes to see a movie in a cinema that's a huge loss (electrics, staff wages, ...)

@DavidPostill Not sure, they've kinda worded it as gross, but even as net it'd be more surprising that it didn't just make a loss
But I guess that's more plausable

(also, amusingly, I went and looked up a recruiter who'd contacted me on linkedin last year. Turns out the company did massive layoffs too :( )

It only cost UKP 4.95 to watch a movie in my local cinema. UK minimum wage is UKP 7 ish per hour.

10:33 AM
and didn't really pay any severance or anything, the wankers.
@DavidPostill and most of that staff would be there anyway. Granted I suppose you'd need to pay a projectionist, if that stuff wasn't totally automated

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, so you have to pay the staff anyway.
Then they also don't make any money on the popcorn sales ;)

Or the overpriced drinks ...

@DavidPostill Was going to say - one trip to the concession stand and you're looking at an overall profit for the day ;)

Principal Areas of Expenditure

Staff costs: manager, deputy/relief manager, projection staff, box office and ushering staff, cleaners, etc.
Marketing and publicity
Premises costs: rates, insurance, maintenance, heat and light, cleaning, security
Office costs and licences (Performing Rights Society, etc.)
Programme enhancement/education costs (may be supported by public funding)
Finance costs, interest, audit fees

10:37 AM
@Jonno does this mean i can pay Keanu Reeves to mow my lawn?

What with that and online streaming/piracy, it almost justifies the mortgage you need to take out for a pack of M&Ms
almost

Total annual net income £412,600 (i.e. net of direct costs: gross profit) based on 80,000 admissions as in example above
Wages £192,000 (8 ft equivalents @ £24,000 pa average)
National insurance @10.45% £20,064
Rent £70,000

Heat and Light £12,000
Insurance £8,000
Repairs and renewals £20,000
Audit/accountancy £4,000
Telephone £2,000
IT £20,000
Printing and stationery £4,000
Depreciation £6,000

Total Overheads £386,064
Net Profit (before tax) £26,536

@Psycogeek As long as you've got a cool £89 you can have him for the whole weekend I'd say

That's a lot of bums on seats to make a small profit

That's actually a crazy small profit margin for that amount of work..

10:39 AM
I may or may not pop by the 7-11 next to my local cinema and smuggle in snacks.

cinema tickets cost way more than a fiver here

14 dollars here I think
less on weekends

Probably why most cinemas in the UK have closed :/

tho I tend to end up in the imax

£8-£10 normally

10:40 AM
@DavidPostill I think the only real way to run a cinema now is to make it an experience again

For me to bother going to the cinema to watch something I'd really want to watch it. Deadpool is about the only movie I've actually wanted to go out and see in a very long time.

My local:
Ticket Prices

Adults: £4.90

Children: £3.90
Balcony

Adults: £5.90

Children: £4.90
Plaza Wednesdays

For selected Wednesdays our tickets are just £2.60.

when i went to see star wars, it was non-imax opening week
£12 per ticket and then £10 for a drink and a huge bag of popcorn

My local... Granted I'm living in a place where average staff wages are $100 USD a month.. Is $3 for 2D or $5 for 3D
At home we'd only ever go on a 2 for 1 special day.
Otherwise we'd be haemorrhaging money left right and centre.

I watched star wars in imax

10:42 AM
I've just realised that my local cinema is run by volunteers - hence the low prices ...

ah

I guess that's one way to do it..?
Don't pay anyone

we tend to go to the odeon or amc in the city centre

I need to watch deadpool if its still running ._.

We are an independent, volunteer-run cinema in Waterloo, Sefton. ... The Plaza Community Cinema is a unique community resource that offers dynamic film based education programmes to schools, the voluntary sector and the general public. We are a community cinema run by volunteers.

10:43 AM
@DavidPostill Is there a charity or organisation they're doing it for? Volunteering for a cinema doesn't sound particularly rewarding..
Oh
That answers that one

sounds like fun actually

@JourneymanGeek For the first few times I'm sure

It is, as far as we are aware, one of the few charities in the UK to provide essential community facilities and encourage social inclusion through a cinema.

@JourneymanGeek Especially if you can hook up a PS4 or something to the projection whilst it's out of use

They are their own charity.

Bob
10:48 AM
@JourneymanGeek Hollywood accounting?

movie theatres here "got what they deserved" when they took a real theatre and real screens and traded it up for a "6pack" theatre with screen no bigger than a home projection, and sound that might have been pro created, that still sucked.

Bob
Hm.
!!wiki hollywood accounting

Hollywood accounting (also known as Hollywood bookkeeping) refers to the opaque or creative accounting methods used by the film, video, and television industry to budget and record profits for film projects. Expenditures can be inflated to reduce or eliminate the reported profit of the project, thereby reducing the amount which the corporation must pay in royalties or other profit-sharing agreements, as these are based on the net profit. Hollywood accounting gets its name from its prevalence in the entertainment industry—that is, in the movie studios of Hollywood at a time when most studios were...

Bob
There we go.

sure the 6pack idea was going to make them big money, and did, but in the long run, it wasnt a theatre anymore, i quit visiting as much.

10:50 AM
@Bob yes
@Jonno my old workplace had a small cinema set up like that
alas, no one used it for gaming

to add to how bad the 6pack theatres were, they couldnt even sound isolate them proper, and you get to hear rumblings and screams and gunshots and all, , , for the movie you arent even watching. Heck I can do that Here

Bob
@allquixotic Huh, OVH is pretty proactive about offering compensation for busted SLAs

Is it just me or is printing in Chrome incredibly fucked?
I have a large table on a website, I want to print it, the result is a huge magnification of the upper-left corner of the table on a single sheet of paper

is this after applying the "fit to page" settings? did you preview (everything)?

10:58 AM
@Psycogeek Where is that setting?
The preview already looks fucked

fit to page is usually parts of the printer driver, you should be able to somewhat access in any program worth using

@Psycogeek So, there "should" be a setting there and if it's not, I should use a different program?
Thanks!

my boss just asked what rickrolling is....
perfect opportunity or....

@OliverSalzburg yea both actually, the program itself feeding data to a printer driver, often has a way to adjust, and the "preferances" for the actual printer driver. it usually drives me up the wall that i have to adjust 50 things. not that i really want a See-It-Print-it quick GUI.
Page Setup ?

11:04 AM
@Psycogeek I know how to read a print dialog
If you want to actually help, open Chrome and check which options are available

chrome, uhh no, all the people complaining about it, plus it looks lamo from the start, and it abuses memory (while making good use of it) so far ,, wouldnt touch it.
out of desperation, the sceen snipping tool, But WAIT, MS didnt put a print dialog In the snipping tool. But they could re-arrange the whole OS with junk. So drop that snip into photoshop and finnaly . . . Big magnified image in the corner , , ok adjust the DPI
the real question is Who Tests this stuff, and what group of people thought that was a good way to do it? same ones saying XP sucks :-)
not to worry, we will bring in a "focus group" for an hour, so they can tell us what a wonderfull job we did. Billy get $50 and go fetch us 10 homeless people, we need to test this thouroughly.

Bob
11:22 AM
@OliverSalzburg You tried using native print?
Maybe it's just the print CSS that's fucked.

@Bob Well, I managed to work around the issue with custom print CSS

Bob
No one ever tests the print CSS
Mainly cause it's a pain in the arse
Both to write and to test
We're still undecided if we want to go the print CSS route or just export to a server-side PDF generator :P

@Bob you mean the print button on a web page? who is going to push those in todays age?

All the secretaries, so that their pointy haired boss can read the webpage content.

[PRINT] thank you for opt-ing into our mailing list, please download our printing package (virus) , and while your waiting for the print , take a look at these fine web pages from our affiliate advertisers (opening in 10 windows).

Weee. my Core i5-6600K - Boxed is at the local postoffice

Any nagios gurus around by any chance? :D

Bob
@Psycogeek print CSS applies no matter how you print. The browser activates CSS with media print when you print
This is independent of any print button on page

300GB HDD
Sadly not compatible with SATA, only with USB

this print preview (both browsers) is common MS print thing it looks like, has "shrink to fit" (not fit to page) in 2 places

12:00 PM
in the printers own, okidata only has "scale" option. Brother provides both scale and fit to papersize . Epson has Reduce/enlarge option.
And SU would like to see answers that would work for everyone :-) there is fully 3 layers of things that can change (printing frames or not) and 2 of them can "conflict" besides.
Ok finnaly, SuperHigh res pictures dont work with the fit stuff in the preview. they have to be scaled instead.
I thought I had seen that occur before, but i just used PrintScreen and NewClipboard in photoshop.

Would be nicer if it actually worked on FF mobile
I assume there's more to it than the rear end of a cat?

it's a GIF

hello, if I wish to install this theme in ubuntu 14.04, do I have to change my desktop environment to gkt2.0 ? gnome-look.org/content/show.php?content=74813

Bob
Not on my phone it isn't :P

I have the default, lightdm

1:00 PM
Now Bob has ditched Debian and is on Ubuntu.

yep, couldn't handle it

@BobEbert OK, those look old.

had a hardware problem, but I fixed it. Now I don't want to go back to it

I doubt you could have that appearance on Unity
@BobEbert Try for any gtk3 themes.

Bob
@jokerdino I ditched Ubuntu ages ago and moved to Debian :P

Bob
@allquixotic Ok, watched the full gif.
...yup, it's still the rear end of a cat :P

@Bob This is about Bob-E.

Bob
@jokerdino I know, was a joke

@BobEbert are you using Unity or gnome-shell?
@Bob It's not funny for the several hundred people using it. :(
Fortunately, I use Fedora.

Bob
1:07 PM
@jokerdino ...weren't you the Ubuntu guy?

unity?

Let's keep this between us. Don't tell my other guys over there.

@BobEbert do you have launcher icons to the left?

yep
should be 3d, not 2d

1:08 PM
That's Unity interface.

2d*

You are looking at GNOME themes, which are meant for gnome-shell. Those look different from Unity.

I have all the default things :p
Which means they won't work? I mean it's just a theme, idk if it matters

@BobEbert sure, they will work..

@jokerdino in the download section, there are only download options for gnome, which one shall I use?

1:13 PM
@BobEbert I linked you to PPA version with instructions which will make the whole thing much easier.

I just learned the hard way that I should be designing winforms with my machine set at 96dpi to prevent things going horribly wrong :)
Yaaaay

Bob
@jokerdino nice ping
:P
@Jonno WPF? :P
I still need to learn WPF

@Bob I haven't actually looked at it properly

WinForms and hidpi hasn't really been a prob for me

I had a quick look once and thought it looked like so much more work for the same results

Q: problems starting django for the first time

mcgyver5New to Django I downloaded a django app (DefectDojo) and I'm following instructions (on windows) to start Django. So far, I've used pip to install Django and a host of other libraries. I understand I need to set the environment variable DJANGO_SETTINGS_MODULE to something.settings. For this app...

is this off-topic?

@Bob :P

Bob
@Jonno I was thinking about picking it up but then ended up working with web languages (HTML/CSS/JS)

Thanks Jokerino, worked perfectly

1:17 PM
@BobEbert glad it worked. Have fun with Ubuntu.
@Bob, Ubunterinos have their own chat -- chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/201/ask-ubuntu-general-room

@Bob Yeah that seems the best choice for wide level of support.

Will be reinstalling everything in a month when the new ubuntu comes out

You can upgrade it from 14.04. No need to reinstall.

Bob
@Jonno Eh I want my async/await and other various syntactic sugar :P
(which apparently ES7 is bringing but I'll get to use it in about 10 years when we stop supporting IE)
Also, dealing with prototypes is a pain in the arse but being able to monkey patch is fun. Until everything blows up and you have no idea where or why.

@Bob Never seen the term "monkey patch" before. Wiki'd it and found it's also called "duck punching"? Whaaaa..

Bob
1:22 PM
...never heard that one before o.O

!!wiki monkey patch

A monkey patch is a way for a program to extend or modify supporting system software locally (affecting only the running instance of the program). This process has also been termed duck punching, based on the term "duck typing". == Etymology == The term monkey patch seems to have come from an earlier term, guerrilla patch, which referred to changing code sneakily – and possibly incompatibly with other such patches – at runtime. The word guerrilla, homophonous with gorilla (or nearly so), became monkey, possibly to make the patch sound less intimidating. An alternative etymology is that it refers...

Bob
@Jonno Basically JS has no real concept of private.
You can touch and override pretty much everything
Want to change what Foo.x() does? Foo.x = function() {console.log('weeee!');};

I have enough issues with strongly typed languages ;)

Bob
Of course, it gets more complex than that.
@Jonno lol
the flexibility to do anything you want is nice, but maintenance is obviously a nightmare

1:25 PM
#define TRUE FALSE - gl hf

mah work so funny

Bob
well, true and false are actual keywords

not sure why this isn't blocked.

Bob
but undefined = true is fun

Ew..

1:25 PM
@Burgi Look on-topic to me.

Bob
can't do that in ES5 strict mode though
and some people code so defensively they check typeof x === 'undefined' cause they don't trust the undefined variable

Seems fair with that in mind lol

Bob
@Jonno It's like a mix between C# reflections and extension methods :P
@Jonno Eh... there's a real good comment on SO about that
Huh, apparently modern browsers don't let you redefine it at all :P

cheers @DavidPostill

Bob
@allquixotic just got a month compensated by OVH o.O
that was for a 4.5h power outage
which should only technically be some 15-25% under their SLA, I thought
ah, not complaining about this one, though. took forever to fix ZFS after that outage :\

Q: Android tablet micro usb port = usb devices + connection to PC possible?

RomainI am developping an app on tablets that dialogs with usb devices. My tablet only has a micro USB port. I use that port to connect the usb devices. My question is : is it possible to have a cable that allow me to communicate with the usb devices on one branch and the other branch to connect the t...

Bob
@Burgi It is possible. Just with a hub, not a cable.

@Burgi I look at stuff like that and say "how could it" , it has communication protocals , acknolegements and flow control , well it could if it and the devices connecting were complex enough to cope with that.
so yea someone could possibly make something to work like that. ex look what they did with the more simple serial ports. it just isnt setup to work that way now. and they got HUBS so they dont ever need to?

@Bob but USB can't do gadget and device mode at once... No?

Bob
2:07 PM
@JourneymanGeek Hm. Point.

the particular cable linked, is a "doubble power" cable, use 2x (limited in power) ports.
in all probability one of the connections is not even wired for data.

I'm at the airport. Everyone is watching cricket :p

i heard that Afghanistan is doing really well
which surprised me

yep.

2:15 PM
i don't know why it surprised me

@JourneymanGeek Sounds familiar somehow :P

especially seeing that part of the world has the best cricketers

which part?

india, pakistan, et al

@Bob no free Wi-Fi. Teathered off my Indian phone :p

@Burgi Are you UK?

yeah

They are not at the level of beating established nations yet.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Wait aren't you some 12h early for the flight? o.O

But they beat up every other country still learning the sport.

Naw, flight here is at 9. Then next flight at 2am

2:25 PM
@jokerdino they beat scotland

Scotland is no good.

admittedly scotland isn't a huge cricket nation but....

England & Wales are good. That's about it.
E&W actually play as one entity.

thats because wales is just full of dragons

superuser.com/questions/960198/how-is-a-usb-y-cable-designed similar but different USB Y question answered fine
OTG is different, being a host usb, and the same port also being a device usb.
But you never get Both at the same time at the device either right? in phones.
the archos MID 5" media device, had both at the same time, and i had used both at the same time, but it had 2 seperated ports, one via a dock that card-edge connected.

The right time to think about this is before you hit the post button
So I looked into what happened yesterday and it seems that Meta post got past my normal content vetting process without a full check for ad-hominem attacks. In the future, there will be tighter checks to prevent something like this from slipping through, and such posts will be more carefully worded to target specific actions or patterns of actions rather than the person who took took those actions. Sorry for what happened yesterday.

4:11 PM
Availability on SU main is going to be very limited as I attempt to recover from this and other recent issues here. I'll also be very busy doing coursework. I'll try to remain on chat but may not respond to events on the main site and may respond slowly to chat pings.
9 hours ago, by bwDraco
I'll try to avoid posting answers, reviewing posts, or otherwise performing any moderation work to allow myself to clear my mind. I'll just take it easy and chat peacefully.
See ya in a bit. Got work to do.

@Bob when Ubuntu 16.04 LTS releases on April 21, I think I'm going to mount my 500 GB of OVH backup storage and dump my ZFS tank on there, then reinstall the OS fresh as Ubuntu 16.04, then manually migrate over programs and containers.... probably the safest way to go
not sure what storage format makes the most sense for the ZFS image though. zfs send won't work when trying to just create a file, AFAIK, and dd would be horribly wasteful of space
I want something like a disk image that I can mount on a loopback device over FTP or SMB, but not a literal dd image

Not familiar with ZFS, sorry. I checked out the documentation and the best suggestion I could find was to create a tarball, but not much else.

I am opting for a new close reason on SU, to solution the problem of the wrong close choice being applied over and over again.
STUPID QUESTION: The question does not provide enough information, or you didnt do your homework, read the manuel , or search the web. Please refer to our Stupid Question help page, follow the required steps in the help page, then ask the question somewhere where they give a damn.

@Psycogeek That's what "unclear what you're asking" is for. We could expand that close reason to cover cases where there's inadequate research effort, but I can't really bring this up on Meta after what happened yesterday.

@bwDraco inadequite research is supposed to be a downvote, but thats ok they got that covered too, all over everything.
All i am saying, is they are really closing what they concider stupid questions.

If there's a genuine concern, you can always ask on Meta. I can't do this myself at this time, but you might have a good case for a "general reference" close reason.
See ya in a bit.

@bwDraco my meta doesnt go any better than your worst meta :-)

4:42 PM
You have the Strafe, right?

@bwDraco yes, really figured out how to configure it too , still some really lame ways to do thing. it has blues, and they are not loud to me at all, but the bottoming out , silicon o-rings fix that a lot, then it is way less clack and all tickety tick
JMG said i shouldnt be bottoming out, I can do that, but only much slower.
my final design, is to have it all color coded, then have explodotype , where the keys surrouding the typed key light up white. because having the typed key only "change color" does nothing, my finger is On it :-)
then to have the "lock" keys change color if they are on or off. instead of the stupid leds that are upper right, far from the actual key.

5:06 PM
they actually only had the strafe in Red and Brown in the store. Being used to buckling spring keys, the browns (even) were way to mushey and non feeling for me. I had to leave the store with nothing , so sad.

@Psycogeek nice

because of the white under the keys, i did blue (darker color) for the Func, that row gets looked right at
and i still dont like the white under there, it does make for more reflective light, but adds too much light noise, and i have no idea how it is going to be or look when a meal, and a few toenail clipping, and a candy bar, some soda, and dog hair is under there :-)

@bwDraco WSA ?? why no D man you going to be going in circles :-)

@Psycogeek That's with Control held down. It's to highlight keyboard shortcuts.

Steve WASniak would approve of WAS without a D

oh so this is not gaming profile?

I have separate gaming profiles.
In any case, I've got to get back to work. See ya in a bit.

notice like the razor the "Shifted" items are in the wrong place? They put the non shifted items in the light, so now i can type the wrong 'quotes' and hit the wrong {brackets] for a while.
it is 9nothing0 > i wont get used to< i assure you> I know exactally how it is suposed to work>

Well Sh*t (and other colourful expressions)
I thought boxed Iten CPU's came with their own cooler
Apparently this one does not.
So I got a motherboard, memory, a i5 6600K and no cooling

@Hennes all mine have, even the cheapo one, want some stock intel coolers

The cheap one had a cooler
Pentium 4400 (dual core skylake)

Skylake K's don't have a stock cooler

for $20 the old standby 212 cooler will blow the stock intel out of the water.

The expensive one (EUR 250 vs Eur 60) did not

5:49 PM
and if you dont need way better cooling, then at least you wont have fan RPMs, larger fan that parks at about 600-900 rpm even when working a core.

6:18 PM
welp. Just nabbed a deal on printer ink cartridges at Staples.

6:43 PM
Aye. 212X ordered
The low prifile zalman also looked quite nice. (And blew air to the board)
Frustrating to have a whole system in house, except cooling.

Yeah, it would be. I'm lucky to have decent local computer stores.

@JourneymanGeek We have a Micro Center that's only a short commute away, and plenty of office supply and electronics retailers nearby. Perks of living in a big city...
Too bad RadioShack has shut down...
...and I'm not running out of ink anytime soon.
Back to work.
