That's just wierd
and I don't see anything like that with mod-vision (tm)

@JourneymanGeek How did you figure out his registered account?

@DavidPostill ip cross reference, then checked registered emails...

Creepy.

User has a problem. Problem is wierd. Possible major bug causing a data leak.
Mods also happen to triage these things
Also us reading PII is logged and being a creepy shit is totally grounds for de-modding.

I had to look up what "vitiate" meant ;)

Heh... I was going through my LastPass vault lastnight, cleaning up old passwords and sites I no longer use. Clicked on one site to change the password and it was no longer the gaming site I remember, but full on porn.

Or you just misremembered

No, it was definitely a gaming site.

Uhuh. Very likely.

But yea... Whoops.
Sorry.

lmao no biggy
Could have been worse.. i once convinced someone at work who loved pen's to check out pen island.com to get some huge deals
i almost got beat up that day for it.
someone actually recently registered penisland.net and made it a legit pen site.

Can a moderator talk to Spencer4134 on what it means to properly cite material from an external link?

hm. That should be me. Got a link?

he is in that room currently
I tried.
Whatever I am attempting to communicate is not getting through.
I pointed out that many of his answers seem to be copies directly from a link, and while he provides the link, what is his original words and what is the cited material is not disguisable
he requested an explicated solution which confuses me because from my point of view, I already provided that :$

1:06 AM
@Ramhound Since JMG is giving that guy the copyright talk.. The image you used here is watermarked. I'm sure TenForums would prefer you don't take their content.

Its not hosted by them, I provided citation, but I can be more explicitly clear with regards to that if you think that helps

I rather do my own stunts do my own screenshots

You know how many times I have provided their screenshots in answers :$

@Ramhound So if I make a copy of the Mona Lisa, but don't keep it in the Louvre. I can claim it's not a copy?
@Ramhound I'm just saying, it's all copy and pasting. Words or images. It's no different.

@MichaelFrank I try to attribute there

1:09 AM
In that example, how is the copy made precisely, if its my original work then it truly isn't a copy. Its only a problem if I claim it is the Mona Lisa.

but its so easy to paste a random google images picture and forget about it

Besides I don't claim that screenshot is my own
Anyways I fixed it
In other cases that won't be so easy, will consider it, in the future

It looks cleaner as well. Plus it doesn't make it look like we don't just Google all our answers and paste the first result. ;)

@MichaelFrank But we do

But that's literally what happens sometimes ;$

1:18 AM
Yesss... I know, that's what the winky face is for.

Which is annoying, which is why its frustrating, when people are like "why so critical" and I am like "really I copied and pasted your title of your question and literally clicked on he first result and your wondering why I am ...."
which is happened to that that question you linked to :$
But hey if they want to give me hundreds of reputation points for quoting a Wikipedia article I will accept it :$
I am still stunned by that one :$

Completely unrelated but...

Welp, from CrystalDiskInfo's monitoring, my machine seems to be writing 20 GB a day to the SSD if the system is left running overnight. That's awfully high; not sure why.
(Not a serious issue as this SSD 850 PRO is rated for 80+ GB a day over ten years, but that's an oddly high I/O rate.)

heh
Its 9.50. My computer has not crashed yet....
So. If I leave my fastrack unplugged while I backup, all is fine

@PatoSáinz #hastagabuse

@PatoSáinz Nothing to do with that. Seems to be some service as svchost.exe seems to be responsible for an inordinate amount of I/O.
Okay. Why is SuperFetch enabled?
(I disabled that a while back.)
It remains to be seen if the problem is brought under control.

2:20 AM
Okay. I've determined the cause of the issue. File History is to blame.
It's rewriting the catalog files Catalog1.edb and Catalog2.edb, in their entirety, every time there is new data to be backed up.
The sad part is that Windows does not allow the .edb files to be compressed; if I try to compress them, File History decompresses it.
Okay. Can I safely use an NTFS junction point to redirect the File History cache at C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\FileHistory\Configuration to another location?
...or am I going to cause the File History service to fail?
Okay, redirected the Configuration folder to another disk. Seems to not disturb the File History service.

Anonymous
@bwDraco there's no reason for it to fail... it's transparent

The issue is that the catalog EDB files have grown very large and it's rewriting nearly 100 MB every time the File History is updated.
...which means an absurd amount of I/O is being performed on the system SSD.
I've redirected the configuration (but not the offline cache) to the machine's secondary SSD.
This means that another SSD will take the hit, but it's much less of an issue at this point.
That drive is much smaller (64 GB mSATA) but gets little use otherwise.
It has about 1.5 TBW on it, so I'm not really worried about it
Nov 1 '14 at 5:23, by DragonLord
@JourneymanGeek I have a cheap 64GB Plextor M5M SSD in my laptop and it is being used as a cache and high-speed scratch space. Somebody managed to wear one out after writing about 250 TB to it

2:42 AM
@bwDraco this is fairly low use tho

> not from normal use, but at work, I've run extended endurance tests on many models of SSD. Just today I killed a Plextor M5M 64GB drive. had about 250TB of writes on it, then I ran my daily power cycle and it kicked the bucket
Given that this laptop still has one open mSATA slot, I could conceivably just install a Samsung SSD 850 EVO alongside the existing SSD and move all data to it. (It's TLC, but 3D V-NAND technology greatly increases endurance so that it's more like planar MLC NAND.)

"Extended endurance tests"
This is the PC equivilent of a little ol lady weekend car ;p
Still need to talk my dad into it

@allquixotic: Hey, Das Keyboard has a new line of gaming keyboards: divisionzerogaming.com
In any case, drives are overprovisioned to extend endurance.

2:58 AM
heh. Am I a hipster for using mechanical keyboards before they were cool? ;p

That 64 GB M5M only has 48 GiB formated (19.3% overprovisioning).
@JourneymanGeek That Roccat keyboard can't come out soon enough :(
(It's a preorder)
I also have intermittent key bounce in the UIOP keys on this Isku.
I'll hold onto it as a spare but it's probably not going to last more than 6-12 months at the rate I'm wearing it down.

@bwDraco that's a funny thing
You've had decent luck with roccats
I've had shit luck with them (Love their design tho)
Razer has a bad rep for reliability but most of my stuff from them lasts

It's been extensively used. It's not surprising that a membrane keyboard would wear out this quickly under heavy use.

3:15 AM
@bwDraco cool!

@allquixotic So is it typical for a membrane keyboard to fail after less than two years of (heavy) use?

@bwDraco typically my cheap ones lasted 5 or more years

@JourneymanGeek under how much use and were there any anomalies (soft key feel, key bouncing, unusual keystroke acoustics, etc.) before failure?

@bwDraco I had a ThinkPad USB Keyboard with TrackPoint (original model, not the Compact one) fail after 2.5-3 years of heavy use

3:40 AM
@bwDraco typically? I threw them out cause they were complete shit, and I ended up getting a nicer keyboard...
I think I had a total shit one survive 8 years of constant office use

Updated Firefox.
Please be advised: The Tab Groups feature is deprecated and will be removed in Firefox 45 (to be released in six weeks): support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/tab-groups-removal (@Bob)
A functionally identical add-on, based on the existing Firefox code for Tab Groups, is available if you rely on this feature.

Mozilla is cash-strapped which means that commercial partnerships with other services is one of the few remaining ways they can stay competitive.
A focus on high-quality core product; extra features may be cut or moved to add-ons.
Again, Mozilla is struggling to stay afloat.

I fear Mozilla may meet an untimely end at some point within the next few years...
Chrome is the industry standard these days and competing with Google is not easy.

Well, Mozilla isn't cash-strapped but their flagship product is losing market share fast which could mean "game over" in 3-5 years unless they do something about it.

@bwDraco ...except that (1) a lot of their libraries depend on (closed) DirectX and thus won't run on open platforms; (2) they still haven't announced any plans for opening up the source on any of their proprietary graphics drivers on any platform, preferring to leave them closed; and (3) they continue to push "standards" like OpenGL and Vulkan with proprietary, patent-encumbered extensions that have to be licensed and proprietary to implement.
The "openness" is little more than skin-deep. When you get down to it, GPUOpen is really GPUClosed, because they're too chicken to go whole-hog. If they're not fully invested in the open source philosophy, why do it? They make all these arguments for why open source higher level libraries are good for developers, then ignore the fact that those very arguments undermine their myriad closed source efforts that will not be opened up.

Well, AMD is just getting started.
Even if it is half-hearted, it is still better than the entirely closed NVIDIA solution.

It's all a matter of degree, but a partially open ecosystem is better than a mostly closed ecosystem.

5:39 AM
AMD's in a wierd place. They can't be allowed to fail. That said, they're kinda crunched between two giants in terms of GPUs

Bob
A slightly open ecosystem claiming to be fully open can be worse than a blatantly closed one.

and not quite sure what path to take in CPUs

Bob
Going beyond "open = good, closed = bad" (which is an ideological issue), claiming to be more than you are is not good.

We'll see how developers react. It's too early to draw any conclusions on the effective openness of the platform.

6:04 AM
well, I really hope that initiative works out
I would love native FreeBSD drivers for AMD

@tereško that might be easier than you think
IIRC sony runs a freebsd versionon the PS4

true
but without community doing the work, AMD just cannot afford to maintain another set of drivers
and PS4 is something of a special case, since they had to write a driver only for a single GPU on a precisely known HW

welp. Machine turned off and back on without warning. Might be a thermal event.
(I was doing CPU-intensive photo editing and the fan was not running at 100%, just spinning up and down.)

if they really opensource all of the GPU-related software (under sensible license like MIT or BSD) then FreeBSD foundation could "adopt" it as an official supported

I do have an HWMonitor PRO license so I'll use it to understand what's going on.

Q: Prevent IP address conflicts on a heterogeneous network consisting of PCs and embedded systems in a retail environment

KattIn our LAN environment (wired and wireless), IP Address conflict almost always gets our systems down. ...hence I edited "retail environment" into the title.

I think it's actually 3/5th.

60 cm to 100 cm.

" The 16-year-old cat survived a breathtaking 20-story plunge from an Upper West Side apartment window with barely a scratch.

“He didn’t even chip a tooth or break a bone,” his thankful owner, Barry Myers, 44, said yesterday of his amazing kitty’s crash landing onto the pavement.

“I usually call him ‘G,’ but he’s Super G. He is Miracle G now,” he said of his best buddy.

Richard Fried, Gloucester’s vet agreed, saying, “He’s lucky to be alive. Most cats would die outright, or suffer serious injuries. He made a miraculous recovery.” "

@jokerdino Wierdly enough?

If you are hight enough then extra height does not add more speed

I heard it's good for the knees. ;)

Not sure what terminal velocity is for a cat, but for humans ist was something in the neighbourhood is 270kmph

12:38 PM
(I've started morning walk-jog-runs to try to loose weight. if It rains, I take the stairs home)

It's bad for the knees coming down again.

At which point air friction and gravity are in balance

@DavidPostill going down is easy tho

But still bad for the knees

That's why I recommend rolling down.

12:39 PM
going up, I might try once a week
Still trying to actually get into a schedule

@Hennes "an average-sized cat with its limbs extended achieves a terminal velocity of about 60mph (97km/h), while an average-sized man reaches a terminal velocity of about 120mph (193km/h), according to the 1987 study by veterinarians Wayne Whitney and Cheryl Mehlhaff."
In a 1987 study of 132 cats brought to a New York City emergency veterinary clinic after falls from high-rise buildings, 90% of treated cats survived and only 37% needed emergency treatment to keep them alive. One that fell 32 stories onto concrete suffered only a chipped tooth and a collapsed lung and was released after 48 hours.

From the moment they're in the air to the instant after they hit the ground, cats' bodies are built to survive high falls, scientists say.

They have a relatively large surface area in proportion to their weight, thus reducing the force at which they hit the pave

Also, cats have a lot of practice, falling from heaven and all that.

35
Q: Can cats survive a fall from any height?

user2869So here's the premise. A cat reaches its terminal velocity after around 10meters of free fall. A cat can survive a landing from a speed equal to its terminal velocity. Therefore a cat can survive a fall from any height. This seems actually quite feasible and would be tremendous if it holds so...

XP PC stuck in boot loop. I disable "reboot upon error" or whatever and google the bluescreen code. NTFS-something-related. I backup all files on an external HDD, erase the primary partition, create a new primary partition, copy back all files.
Then I think "ok, next step is reinstalling the boot loader, how do I do that without having to reinstall XP, where the hell do I get an original XP disc and / or a non-sketchy XP iso"
So while I ponder on this, I casually turn on the PC and... XP boots and loads. O_o"
I know the only question should be: "how do I nuke it from orbit".
But then it brings another, slightly more difficult question: "how do I change the OS of a 90-old-lady's PC who gets nervous when the icons change from tile to list".

I was considering installing a lightweith LTS distro, "transplanting" this XP install into a VM, and having it auto-starting in full screen.
Not sure if it is a good idea (in this specific situation) or something stupid and dangerous
Does not look like WinXP exactly like my granma's XP

@ThatBrazilianGuy Just above that image it says "every feature can be turned on or off"

And "How do I install just Classic Start Menu or just Classic Explorer?
After you agree to the license terms the installer will ask which features you want to be installed. By default all components are checked. Uncheck the ones you don't want."
You can just install the start menu if that's all you want

@DavidPostill Not features, I mean it isn't a pixel-by-pixel replica of XP. Old lady will get confused, trust me.

I love the class start menu but use xyplorer.com instead of explorer.

To the community: I tend to lose my temper easily and to allow myself to act on emotion. The right thing to do in situations like this is to cool down first and to not act until that's happened. As a result of my failure to do so, I have made several erroneous decisions while reviewing and moderating content on this site and set a poor example for the community to follow. I hereby apologize for doing so, and will take steps to ensure that I moderate calmly and patiently at all times.
