@cybermonkey done!

@allquixotic ta :-)

the system should be fixed so this doesn't happen.. Somebody made a good edit to an answer just removing a stupid line.. and this stupid question got into the list of unanswered questions, even though it's a stupid question and it's from 2013 superuser.com/questions/611069/…

7:35 PM
My website is going down as Linode just launched KVM hosts
Site is up.

is @Bob in the room?

Thank you so much for telling me that dragonlord

Huh?

because I was discussing some options for my next storage upgrade
last night, with him and @DragonLord

oh right you were continuing a discussion from last night, ok

7:43 PM
I'm currently basically hesitating between getting a 1 TB SSD; or a smaller SSD that I configure (partially?) as a cache and then supplement with 2x2TB platters
or does someone else have a moment to discuss that?
Recap: I'm a gamer, my original plan was a 1 TB SSD and keep my current 1 TB HDD; then I thought to get a 500 GB SSD and 2X2TB in HDD
and then I got into a discussion on SSD caches with @DragonLord and @Bob
which I had to interrupt because it was getting late

@NateKerkhofs What do you need help with?

well, I basically want to keep discussing the options for the storage solution I'm planning
I'm still torn between either getting the 1 TB SSD and keep my old drive as a data drive, or getting a 64-128 GB SSD, 4 TB in HDD and use the SSD as a cache for the 4 TB

A couple of fellow users here use Romex PrimoCache and have had great results.
It's $30 for a perpetual license, one PC.
I've never used this before, but you'll probably benefit most this way.
Smart Response Technology is free with any decent Intel-based motherboard and probably more efficient as it relies on the Intel chipset, but can't cache as much data as it's capped to 64 GB.

It probably depends on whether I go for a 64 or a 128 GB SSD
and that in turn depends on how well a cache works for games and some light software development

Bob
@NateKerkhofs I think we went through everything already.
You just need to decide now.
Each has pros and cons.
The terabyte SSD might be best for you if you can afford it, but you still need to figure out how your backups will work - SSDs can and do fail.

8:01 PM
Yeah, I'm not really that good when it comes to backups. I'm of the mindset that, with current internet speeds, it's easier to just reinstall from scratch and have the really important stuff on dropbox
or on github for code

dropbox is only free for 2GB right? do you have <= 2GB?

I actually have access to 6 GB through different promotions, for free
I had 2 GB to start with, unlocked another 1.2 GB just through the initial steps and referrals
then in 2013, I got a Galaxy S4, which gave me 50 GB for free
actually, 48 GB
that 48 GB will expire soon, but because I've been loyal during that period, I get another 3 GB for free

to get the referrals did you tell people you stood to gain from it?
or did you just tell them they should install dropbox and use your promo code when doing it for them?

8:20 PM
@barlop I referred the people that needed access to my thesis, which I saved on dropbox
my promotor and my proofreader
and even that was only like 200 MB
I earned 250 MB from getting started, 500 from a referral, and another 500 from the Caroussel promotion

8:40 PM
My Nexus 9 gets very H-O-T near the top right corner when under load for more than a few seconds.
Almost hot enough to burn to the touch.
That Tegra K1 is insanely power-hungry
At the 1.5-amp maximum charge rate allowed by the tablet, it can't charge quickly enough to keep up with the SoC's power draw
Since mine is rooted, I am able to cap the clock speed well below the nominal 2.3 GHz to keep things under control, though, but it isn't ideal when full performance is needed.

1 hour later…
10:11 PM
there was once an ibm laptop that ran really quiet and had a metallic bottom, it would get so hot.. there was a story of a guy burning his nuts from it
just a forum post, not like a hospital case

10:29 PM
It would be interesting if Sony Z5 was released with tegra chip
not sure whether it would make sense, but interesting nevertheless
