I like that urban myth :/

> To put all this in perspective, sunlight (which is a higher frequency, and therefore more energetic) is about 1000 W per square metre when it hits the ground, half of which is visible light or higher.
That's a lot o0

Bob
@HackToHell ...didn't I write that? O_O

At least I can now put to rest that it was not soup ?? And it could still be somewhat accurate to say "chocolate" bar if the " peanut cluster bar" was still chockolate coated.

@Bob You did ? :D
> It has been estimated that you get a bigger dose of microwaves from one 20-minute phone call than from a year's Wi-Fi.

Bob
And, yea, that giant fusion reactor many times bigger than this planet puts out a lot of energy. Someone calculated that if sound travelled through space/vacuums (presumably ~the rate it does through 1atm air), it would be 100 dB at the surface of the earth.

1:04 PM
Perhaps I should add that
1000W is a huuuge amount of power
If only we could capture it :C

Bob
> If the extraterrestrial solar radiation is 1367 watts per square meter (the value when the Earth–Sun distance is 1 astronomical unit), then the direct sunlight at Earth's surface when the Sun is at the zenith is about 1050 W/m2, but the total amount (direct and indirect from the atmosphere) hitting the ground is around 1120 W/m2.[3] In terms of energy, sunlight at Earth's surface is around 52 to 55 percent infrared (above 700 nm), 42 to 43 percent visible (400 to 700 nm), and 3 to 5 percent ultraviolet (below 400 nm).[4] At the top of the atmosphere, sunlight is about 30% more intense, h
@HackToHell I did not write that
Where'd you get the earlier quote from?

@Bob Just read that piece
2 mins ago, by HackToHell
From http://www.theguardian.com/technology/askjack/2012/sep/27/wi-fi-health-risks

Bob
Pretty sure I wrote it in an SU answer that may or may not have found its way to HowToGeek.
@HackToHell That one doesn't mention that specific quote.

@HackToHell that figure sounds about right. here i figured loosly that the sun that roars into a big window , even with dual pane and some IR deflection, heats the house similar to a 500W space heater or incan light.

hm. Any of you guys got a kindle?

1:07 PM
With multiple windows , and on days when the sun is blazing into them, it takes 2X that ammount of power from the Air Conditioner to get it the freak back out of the house :-)

Bob
@Psycogeek Sounds about right. About 500 W infrared. Though not all would be absorbed, so it'd be a bit below that.
@JourneymanGeek Surprisingly? Yes!
Picked one up about a month ago :P
Haven't used it much though :(

@Bob: regular or paperwhite?

Bob
Paperwhite

How is it to read on?

Bob
Hmm... that's preeeeetty subjective...

1:08 PM
lol

Bob
Personally, I don't mind reading on my phone at all.

@Bob It does !

Bob
wait, do they even sell non-paperwhite anymore?
@HackToHell whatwhere

@Bob My eyes hurt after long reading periods

1:09 PM
@Bob Use the search ;p

there's a 79 dollar non paperwhite model

Bob
@HackToHell What do you think I tried first?

We are talking about this right

oh, and adfree or with the ads?

@JourneymanGeek Adfree
Hm..
Honestly, I mostly read webpages.

ahh. Trying to decide if I should save the 20 quid or not ;p

Bob
Kindle's not great for that.
e-ink is not great for that

Oh. I have a decent collection of ebooks.

Bob
1:11 PM
scrolling is a pain

@Bob yep, you wrote it

A: Paranoid Parent: "WiFi safe for baby?"

BobPerfectly safe. The term "radiation" is often used to scare people. Let's get it straight. There's two factors - frequency and intensity. Frequency has a far larger effect on how damaging radiation is. WiFi and other radio communications use a very low frequency - far below visible light. R...

I'm basically looking for a surrogate for a proper book

Bob
I suspect the Kobo would be a better choice - wider format support too
@JourneymanGeek Yea, I converted a couple of the tings I read to proper ebooks.

Most of them are cross format. I buy em off baen ;p

Kindle is just too expensive

Bob
1:11 PM
Hm. The screen looks pretty nice.

Yeah, that's the main thing for me

Bob
Probably better than a phone screen, but again I don't mind a phone screen anyway...
You're better off looking at one in-store :P
I find the page-turning to be a bit annoying though

Can you make it white on black?

Bob
more used to something scrollable

safe for a baby , sure just dont put the router in the crib

1:13 PM
Nah, only the babyfoon

Bob
@JourneymanGeek even adfree does a lot of kindle store promotional stuff :\

ahh
then worth saving the 20 quid? ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek has font size, font face, line spacing and margins
...I don't see a night mode
> e-ink devices (including Paperwhite) however, do not
welp.

hmm
no, and the reasoning seems sound.
font face is essential/expected

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ya, apparently it's not really all that useful on e-ink
@JourneymanGeek Baskerville, Caeciia, Caecilia Condensed, Futura, Helvetica, Palatino
Carcilia is default

1:18 PM
I need a good sans one basically

Bob
I still think I should've gotten a Kobo
@JourneymanGeek They all have serifs o.O
Well, Helvetica isn't really
still has a bit though

caeciia looks ok
hm. no

Bob

7 inch display ?

Bob
photo of a screen doesn't look that great :P

1:24 PM
6
futura seems good
looks sharp even from that ;p

tanks for the picture

The water in the pool is actually sloshed out :O

hm. And the 20 quid a month, all you can read thing seems handy.

posted on April 27, 2015

Did it work? no. And How.

Bob
That's Futura.
Shoddy photo though :(

1:28 PM
It'll do ;p

Bob
I can't really get much better lighting at this time, and the phone camera seems to hate low light

I'd actually consider getting my mom a regular version but she finds most technology scary

Bob
lol
take a look at the Kobo stuff, though
last time I checked, they were better than the Kindle

@Bob: no official local retailer tho

Bob
ah
not stocked in local chain pc stores?

1:32 PM
nope

@HackToHell ahh videos finnaly. I gaped at youtube yesterday to see what happened, and the reporting was slim at that time, and people stealing other peoples videos and reposting them (repeats) was par. Around here (california) in earthquake, they actually do not recommend going out of buildings. As the glass shatters from the skyscrappers and stuff flies off them (ornimental building decor). There it is like get the hell out .

Bob
wow
@JourneymanGeek you can always get the ad version and turn off ads

@Bob: yeah

Bob
I think the end price is the same

Bob
1:35 PM
Tapping to flip pages feels weird to me though

lol, that sounds fairly awesome to me

Bob
Continuous scrolling feels a bit smoother
I'd tap and have a bit of confusion when it changes
Also, I don't think there's any auto-flip/scroll like mobireader has, and at default font and screen size you end up having to tap a lot

(anyway, its just on the start of the 3 month rule ;p)
I'll likely increase font size

Bob
Makes that particular issue worse :P

dogs have bad vision I'm dylexic so bigger fonts are easier on me.

Bob
1:39 PM
@JourneymanGeek I mostly wanted to know how reading webpages on e-ink would feel
(Cause considering yotaphone)

@Bob: If I wanted to chat, there's always the stream
it sucks to read books on tho

Bob
Oh, not chat, to read a lot of html-formatted books

ahh
(ironically, I converted a load of mobi formatted books from the baen free library to epub)

Bob
They also offer epub but that's a bit annoying on a phone

epub + google books works ok

Bob
1:42 PM
I used to read mobi when I had an older phone with a shit browser
Webpages on e-ink isn't so bad, but the scrolling and browser itself on the kindle are annoying
So yota isn't ruled out yet

Bob
@JourneymanGeek the keyboard is actually surprisingly good :P

touch keyboard?
I generally tend to hate those

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ya, touch

What is the screen size of the Stream your using? and why does it suck to read books?

Bob
1:50 PM
but it works decently, considering it's e-ink
the touchscreen is surprisingly active, if not 100% responsive (e-ink doesn't update enough to get confirmation for all actions)

@Psycogeek: 10 inches
Its not size, its viewing angle.
10 inches
its a decent machine for chat (on the train) and if I need a real computer I can throw into a backpack

Bob
sigh
another oversensitive chat flagger is around

I keep missing those

Bob
@JourneymanGeek this was flagged

heh
that's just silly

Bob
1:52 PM
it's mildly off-colour (ha ha, pun not really intended), but flagging? blah. oversensitive.

and there were two oher flags

Bob
shows what's wrong with our society.
@JourneymanGeek I voted invalid on both. I don't think either passed.

lol, haiest zombie comments not allowed

heh I used to live in the UK, I heard a lot of ginger jokes. Not worth snapping it.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek the 10" tablet+keyboard was for that, but now I'm using a full fairly light 13" laptop I just tend to bring that now

Please don't mindlessly flag chat messages. Unless "zombies have red hair" is a new sex position that I don't know about, it isn't offensive.

1:53 PM
@Bob: I also wanted to be able to install my work VPN system on it
(which is delayed cause we're re-architecting it)

I have a quick question about partitions - If some one can give me a yes or no answer? I have 1 SSD, 128GB but it's been partitioned into 2 x 64GB. The OS is installed, as is software. Am I able (with software which I can Google for) 'migrate' 30GB from 1 hard drive to the other?

Quick answer: yes you can
That it is a SSD or not does not matter.
But there are plenty tools which can do that. The ancient one I used was partition magic, (back in w98, w2000 era)
I am sure there are better tools out right now, as well as some native support in some OS's
Which OS are you using? Solaris? FreeBSD? Windows? Linux ?

Well, I'm sure there are lots about, do you know though, for a simple migrate as I describe, if paid apps are worth the extra? I'm usually a supporter of software, paying the 'underdog' company where I can
but, if the moving of space (the migration) is trivial, then a free one is fine

if you are on windows, the try start, run, diskmgmt.msc
And look at shrink volume and extend volume

wow, that easy?
Cool, thank you

Always make a backup though. If power fails during resizing it might end up in a 'funny' state

2:36 PM
ah, I see. Yes, good thinking. Thank you again for your help :)

Q: How to turn Windows domain account to a local account

JohnEyeI asked the IT department in our company to remove me from our domain so that some restrictions aimed at all the users within the domain no longer apply to me. The problem is that when I restart my computer and try to log in, I cannot do so due to the fact that my user account is still somehow t...

@Bob What the...

Bob
@OliverSalzburg it just seems really weird
they'll happily let him use a local account?
but won't set it up for him?

Bob
2:49 PM
what kind of ghetto IT dept is he dealing with?!

I'm tempted to answer

And why would they have to "remove him from the domain"

"Ask your IT department"

Just create a new local account for testing

Bob
@OliverSalzburg well, I suspect (hope) that's just lost in user-translation

3:09 PM
youtube.com/watch?v=14V2T1EONR8 nepal video. when it comes to the question "do animals know before a quake happens" in the case of the birds there , I would say no?

"when I try to log in, the system complains about being unable to verify the account against some server." Doesn't the computer hold that AD login information on the computer? I only ever see this message when a computer is powered off for a very long time.

> Hi Oliver,

Thank you for the quick response. I'm sorry this happened. There must have been something that went wrong with the rooting process. Don't worry though you may try the links below for recovering your lost data.

http://www.jihosoft.com/recover-data/recover-data-after-factory-reset.html

http://www.yodot.com/android-data-recovery/after-factory-reset.html
What a load of crap

@yilduz @yilduz Do you mean "The local OS keeps a cached copy of the AD information, which is only valid for a limited time?"
@OliverSalzburg Not sure that a new local account will suffice. I think (not 100% sure) that you can set a policy on a machine. That would be independant of the account logged in (local or otherwise).
In which case the answer is: Reformat and reinstall without ever touching the domain, or use a VM (and up the OS count by one)

Yes, but as long as he connects to the network that shouldn't be an issue, right? Could his problem just be that maybe he's on a laptop remotely away from their network and he's no longer able to use the cached information?
(not an AD expert) :P

3:25 PM
When he connects to the network (via VPN ?) information may get updated.
MAy since I experienced plenty problem when a laptop had cached credentials, and the password was changes on another machien connected to the domain
Which was solved by:
1) Log into laptop with old user/pass
2) Connect to work VPN (now the AD is reachable).
3) Lock screen
4) unlock screen -> username and password are verified against the AD. Cached credentials are updated

Maybe he doesn't have vpn access.
I dunno, his issue just doesn't seem to be the issue that he thinks it is, as far as I can see.

Maybe. "against some server" is pretty vague

Yeah, it is.
and his comment on the answer is completely different from his question.

So, about the mic computer freeze thing from earlier
It happened as predicted. Turned it on, no problems at all

I usually don't do this, but.. hooray!

3:35 PM
Hi everyone. Sorry to bother you but someone on meta-tavern suggested me to try to ask here before attempting an actual question on some network site.

@SPArchaeologist Sure, just ask!

Just wanted to know if anyone ever managed to have VLC save language metadata info and if the date info is supposed to be year only.

@slhck congy
o penguin overlord

seems to me that the program just forgets the language and normalize date to numbers

@SPArchaeologist That is, for MP4 files, or..?
MKV?

3:37 PM
@slhck mp4 . I know there was a bug with mkv

@HackToHell If I was aggressive I'd be all like

It would seem that the Language field isn't persisted. Or must follow a precise format. Not that I really need it since most of the files I would categorize would be English recordings, but still made me wonder. Also made me wonder that the date only seem to persist numbers instead of actual full dates

@SPArchaeologist Hm. No idea, sorry. Not sure what kind of metadata storage is even used there. Feel free to ask on the main site, though, including a screenshot or something.

@slhck will probably do. Thanks for now

Bob
3:51 PM
@OliverSalzburg Hey, you have a personal google service!

@slhck Congrats

Bob
@OliverSalzburg Look on the bright side, you'll never need to filter through search results again.
Just ask these guys.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Oh, the Paperwhite doesn't do audio

If I imagine that I gave one of our clients some advice that caused them to lose all of their data, I'm pretty sure that I could come up with a better response than "Oh, well, shit happens. Here are a couple of links I found online that might help you to get your data back. Thanks for buying our product btw!"

4:08 PM
Over 140 messages missed...

Bob
@OliverSalzburg I suppose with the way support from phone manufacturers go nowadays, you might consider yourself lucky they gave you links at all. Heck, lucky they responded at all.
Or maybe unlucky that they responded, since that kinda led to this situation...

Indeed

Bob
I don't even want to try to contact Samsung. They'd probably come back a month later with some standard response.

@OliverSalzburg and ? what was the mic item (usb or a recorder or a simple analog mic) he was trying to shove into where? and did he bring it along so you could test it?

@Psycogeek No, we only got the computer

4:12 PM
So he takes it home, shoves an AC plug into the USb again, and swears at the techs for not even knowing what was wrong :-)

4:26 PM
youtu.be/0LR-LlMZlrU?t=259 (starts 4 minutes in to get to the meat) Never saw this before. wouldnt that make a cool case for a TVPC or a NUC ?

@Psycogeek Could be. But we sold him the computer, we'll take a look at it if it's supposedly broken. I don't really have time to investigate something like this properly. I just want to get the problem off my desk, so that I can take care of the shit we actually do

Or for more fun, watch youtu.be/J9dmpIm87bs?t=248 how to Not RTFM first.

I'm only now starting to realize the fallout of this data loss
Like losing my OTP database... O__o

I got WifeIt :P

LOL

That'd be a pretty awesome startup, haha.

But as they do in IRC, /nick WilliamD.Edwards|away.

And now I was also outbid on that document scanner
What a shitty day!
That scanner could have turned it all around, but no!
Alright, time to set up my "new phone" \o/

well dont flash it today :-)

@slhck I'd better start posting more answers :\

Hurry up and get there :P

5:40 PM
Wow, it seems like, for the first time ever, my apps will be restored from Google's backup
And you can no longer use app passwords to log into your Google account :(
And apparently there are multiple kinds of Cyanogen accounts

Things are really going well aren't they @OliverSalzburg?

@WilliamD.Edwards I'm having a beer now, so things are improving slowly

Holy shit
I have my sound on 100% and I didn't know the sound when someone tags you... :/

lol
Sorry about that ;D

Hahaha...

5:58 PM
Ah, so there's an account for CyanogenMod and one for Cyanogen OS

@OliverSalzburg The new update?

@CanadianLuke Yeah

I only have the one account... Interesting
What do the different ones do?

Support told me to root my phone to get the update to install. I did and my phone was reset in the process :(

Wait, WHAT?? I know you have to reset the phone to root, but that's kinda ridiculous!

6:01 PM
@CanadianLuke I don't know, but I couldn't log in with my CyanogenMod credentials when setting up the phone
@CanadianLuke The reset happened from unlocking the bootloader

Weird... Wonder if VPN'ing to Canada would help.... I had NONE of these issues updating

I'm just pissed that they told me, I wouldn't lose any data and didn't make me aware of the risks

Sucks to hear that.

Alright, seems like all apps were restored. I'll check the configuration now

Since you got it up and running, and rooted, maybe you should get something like Titanium Backup, for next time?

6:04 PM
@CanadianLuke It's not even rooted now

After I unlocked the bootloader and the device was reset, it would instantly install the update

My question is, why was that needed in the first place, when every other phone got the update without any problem?

And I had different backup solutions in the past, but never needed them so I abandoned them :P
I only use stuff like FolderSync to sync pictures and stuff
@CanadianLuke Yeah, I'd love to know that as well
It sounded more like a random suggestion than an educated guess
Well, time to reconfigure everything :P

Well, let me know if you ever see Lollipop on it... Or their new OxygenOs

6:07 PM
@CanadianLuke Oh, I'm on that right now

What?!?
OK, now I'm jealous

6:21 PM
@CanadianLuke I'd love to tell you how awesome it is, but the experience is overshadowed by earlier events ;D

lollipop isn't all it's cracked up to be (on my Note 4, at least)

I just like having the latest greatest, all thet ime

"Mr. Page! How many hacks does it take to get to the root kernel of a Lollipop?"
"IT'S OVER NINE THOUSAAAAAAND!!!!"

I lost my game progress O___O

6:38 PM
Yesterday I had to move about 77km (48 miles) just to be able to buy game controllers for slightly less shitty prices
They were used (I knew beforehand) and one is broken (this I didnt) ;___;

7:12 PM

Can I edit that?

hmm, where is the "compress the heck out of it" stage? Doesnt standard english text compress really easily? I never actually tried it is so small
the mess of html taking up much of the actual size , is ripe for compression, with repetition galore.

@Psycogeek they don't ship the dumps in HTML; they give you XML and SQL, compressed using the highly efficient 7zip LZMA2 codec.
the current version of the English language Wikipedia is 11.8 GB and decompresses to terabytes of text
and that doesn't include pictures!

So if I write a book in notepad, and save out simple askII kind of thing, does simple text itself compress well?

@Psycogeek it has a compression ratio of about 3-5%, which means the original uncompressed text is about 20x larger than the compressed file

ahh, so if we dumped the formatting, took out all the sales, removed the corporate and political edits , got rid of the speculation and uncredited tripe, the whole thing would fit on a microsd that is smaller than my thumbnail?

even without doing all those contrived and pointless things, it would still fit on a 32GB microSD card.
11.7 GB < 32 GB (and microSD cards go much higher than 32 GB)
it'd fit on the internal NAND of my phone, even.

7:42 PM
the first piece of paper folded up to that size would be that big.

ServerFault chat seems to be inactive... so it's either irc #nginx or here

SF chat kinda migrated to slack

slack?
slack the service or stack?

slack the chatroom

slack A.K.A. "mIRC is so old no one remembers it, let's make it proprietary and build a startup around it"

11:36 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy: ugh

that said, it is quite good and well-designed

hexchat is the preferred IRC client these days IMO ;p

been using it (slack) for a couple weeks for a group project

how do you use slack for a public chatroom....?

you don't

11:37 PM
I haven't used IRC in a looooooooooooooong time, the very few exceptions I have used web interfaces

@ThatBrazilianGuy: If I ran my own web ircserver that's what I'd do

I use ChatZilla but only because it's faithful to the mozilla suite. Also because I'm too lazy to buy mIRC

buy mIRC Oh dear. I feel old.

mIRC community edition anyone??

Its not FOSS
xchat was other than the licencing code ;p
hexchat was a fork (silverex also had a nice distro)

Anyway I was wondering how to use nginx to point port 80 on ssh.mydomain.com to port 23.

@oldmud0 O_o why?!

because I am using SSH to encrypt my traffic on public networks and certain networks do not allow traffic except on 80 and 443

ughhh I have to use nginx_tcp_proxy_module? I don't want to recompile nginx, it is hell when you are compiling to windows :(

Why use windows? ;p

11:47 PM
@JourneymanGeek mIRC 4 lyfe!

also why not set ssh to use port 80 directly?

well currently, ssh is using 443 on the main domain.com
however I am going to set up GNU httptunnel on ssh.mydomain.com at 443

serverfault.com/questions/355271/… suggests it can't be done
