Q: Stimulate users to ask how they can achieve something

agtoeverI noticed people sometimes asking questions about a specific solution to their problem instead of asking how to achieve their goal. For example in this question the user wants to replace a faulty RAM. He needs to know what the specs are of his new RAM. He thinks he can deduce that from the partnu...

@OliverSalzburg Why be so modest?

@MichaelKjörling You gotta start somewhere

@JourneymanGeek Better Steam does that already.

10:59 AM
@MichaelFrank Interesting. So if I move from 64-bit to 32-bit, then my 32 GB RAM suddenly become 64 effective GB RAM? Why didn't someone tell me!?! ;)

@allquixotic It wouldn't work to have a benchmark which leveled out once you hit Y2K CPUs would it? In the real world, you're probably going do go with a less modern OS. Going from 64 bit to 32 bit will nearly double your speed as well as double the effective RAM. Add the fact that, even though these older CPUs are hotter per core, they have less overall heat to dissipate to begin with and you can probably run it closer to 4Ghz on air. You aren't playing the latest blockbuster games & you'll notice < mem bus and 1xcore but it really isn't too bad. Still beats your average tablet experience. — krowe 6 hours ago
@MichaelKjörling ^

@MichaelKjörling: CLEARLY I am doing it all wrong, and need to dig out an old XT

@JourneymanGeek XT? Pfft. Forget those modern gadgets.

its 16 bit. clearly its 4 times as fast
@MichaelKjörling: 2 bit computer?

Besides, who needs more than eight sectors per track anyway?

11:01 AM
I'm probably not allowed to call a user clueless :/

@JourneymanGeek But if I leave the system turned off, then it'd be a zero bit computer. It'd be inf times faster. And since anything multiplied by inf is infinity, it is infinitely fast. What's all the fuss about quantum computers, again?
*sets off to factor RSA-2048*

snort
sure, its half the benchmark, but beat that power consumption

Q: Feedback requested: Runnable code snippets in questions and answers

Jesus christ, what hotkey do you have to use in OSX Finder to delete a file?

Hint: It's not Delete

@OliverSalzburg Aren't you assuming that there is such a thing as a key mapping to the "delete file" command?
It's a Mac. Keyboards are superflouos.

@MichaelKjörling You're correct in assuming that I assumed that there is a hotkey to delete a file

go nuts in that ^^

@OliverSalzburg I assumed I was correct in assuming that you were assuming... aw crap.

@MichaelKjörling: unfortunately getting a direct neural implant up your rear end is not an option for most of us

Internet suggest Cmd+Delete, doesn't do anything for me

My best shot would probably be Cmd+D, but that just as well might Duplicate.

@JourneymanGeek Right, it's a Mac.

my banana clips came in

(and hillariously, they were posted in malaysia)
@OliverSalzburg: are you holding it correctly is the file highlighted ?

@JourneymanGeek Yes
@MichaelKjörling Already tried that, is actually duplicate
@JourneymanGeek It has right-click, and, yes, Move to Trash works great if you consider using a context menu to perform a delete action "great"

@OliverSalzburg: naw, its an apple. It is clearly immaculate.

11:28 AM
This machine is so frustrating
And now it crashed while validating my app and apparently that corrupted my provisioning profile and signing identities but obviously I can't re-import them because they're already installed. So now I have to hunt down the actual files in the file system to clear them out before I can re-import them and then finally validate my app

@Bob: well, I'd either get it from dx or xiomi's local web store

and then I see this and think up a reply to it, except I already did that too
I'm pretty predictable -_-

2:07 PM
@Bob let's play a game! :D it's time to trigger a specific, predictable brain pathway and series of statements in your brain :D ready?
Beats Audio! GO!

Bob
-_-
incidentally, I saw two people with on-ear headphones today. One was Sony, one was Sennheiser. I was so happy.

Sennheiser is still my favorite headphones manufacturer, but personal cost-cutting measures plus the apparent inability of Sennheiser to purchase rechargeable lithium batteries that last longer than 8 hours, has led me to purchase Meelectronics and Steelseries sets for my bluetooth and wireless needs, respectively
one day a new-hire at Sennheiser is going to walk into the design studio with all the gray beards who produce the best headphones in the world and say "Hey, guys! I have an idea! Let's buy batteries that last longer and/or reduce our chipset's power consumption! People might like more than 8 hours of battery life!"
After being cussed out in German for about 20 minutes, one of the engineers will probably say "You know, he's on to something."

Bob
I was actually tempted by this, but really unnecessary :P

@Bob this has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that I'm wearing a pair right now, but the Air-Fi Matrix2 comes highly recommended by me.

I'm sure it does ;p

ever write code that you're so unsure about that you're almost afraid to test it?
looks okay; smells okay; but probably will fail dramatically

Bob
@allquixotic That would be the majority of what I write :P
Well, not that bad

@Bob heh
for me it's the Ruby problem unfortunately :/
Ruby is psychologically taxing. MAN do I love it when I can express something elegantly. but with no compile-time type checker or syntax checker, prospects of random crashes are quite distressing
let's just say that I (ab)use rescue more than a firefighter

lol
I'd probably rather get a nice pair of 'regular' headphones, and that neat USB/BT soundcard creative makes than BT

USB/BT soundcard? wat
does it let you walk around with it?

2:24 PM
yeah, actually

and I still don't like cables. :P that doesn't solve that problem.

its not out yet, and I hope its not vaporware
its actually a pretty interesting idea

99.9% of the quality loss (dog ears or no) for BT or wireless headphones comes from the lossy encoding they perform between the transmitter and receiver. not because the drivers are bad or anything

in fact, even fairly meh drivers will not make the sound noticeably worse because it's already been degraded a fair bit by the codec
granted, the $300 Steelseries H Wireless claims a lossless encoding, but since it's proprietary, that may as well be a lie
maybe it's just really really high bitrate lossy

2:25 PM
I'm feeling lazy and trying a script to install rtorrent. After making a backup

Bob
my desktop doesn't have BT :\

@allquixotic: sound is relatively low bandwidth

@Bob that's what my H Wireless is for :D also, latency is a huge problem with gaming, so I don't game with BT headsets, I use the H Wireless, which is not bluetooth

heh. Funny thing is the only devices I have with BT are my phone, and my Brix

@JourneymanGeek compared to what Bluetooth (pre-4.0) can do? it's quite hungry.

2:26 PM
@allquixotic relatively

I'm surprised there's no BT 4.0 standard lossless codec

but if you dump bluetooth, and go with a different encoding scheme...

honestly they could just develop a protocol stack that's streaming FLAC @ 44.1KHz 16-bit and probably be fine on BT 4.0.

@JourneymanGeek Yes -- that is what Steelseries did. Unfortunately it only works with their proprietary base station.

2:28 PM
I'd argue though that in most situations flac is overkill.
(yes, dog ears and all)

Bob
my current headphone order of preference are the cheapo ATHs > Logitech USB headset > Meelec in-ears > Samsung in-ears
Swap the first two around for gaming.

I tend to use my fishers for everything at home
though, I really hate my laptop's onboard sound

I use the Steelseries whenever I'm at my desk at home. if I'm anywhere other than at my desk at home (read: not at home at all, or elsewhere than my desk), it's Meelec Air-Fi Matrix2.

my portable headphones are cheapo creatives

Bob
@JourneymanGeek You know my opinion of my laptop's sound drivers :P

2:29 PM
haven't worn headphones with a cable in a year or two ;p

@allquixotic: I think mine are kinda fixed to my desk ;p
cause cable management.

@MichaelFrank feels a urge to downvote

I need to take a picture of the huge fire trap of dust and cables to the left of my PC in my "cable bay" (I call it that, but it's not a bay, it's just a space on the floor where all my cables go)
one day I'm going to wake up at 3 AM and my room is going to be on fire. -_-

Bob
:17351067 those things are too expensive, even with the discount -_-

@allquixotic: When I get a job, I'm rebuilding my desk ;p

2:31 PM
@Bob you're due for a gift at some point ;-D just saying ;D I gave doggy Watchdogs earlier in the year
hmm... Christmas?

Bob
lol

@allquixotic: mine are sort of floating just above dog height ;p

Bob
I appreciate the thought, but I don't think I can accept something like that :P
It's far too much

if you had the box on your doorstep, you'd accept it. the shipping cost to return would be too high ;p
this is Mars Australia we're talking about, remember
'sides, friends help friends out ;D

@Bob just what you are replying to?
@allquixotic huh

2:34 PM
@Braiam He is referring to the Steelseries H Wireless headset (it's a proprietary 5 GHz low-latency wireless audio protocol; it's not WiFi or Bluetooth)... base station that connects to just about anything (Optical, USB or 3.5mm) and 120 ft range on the headset.
only Sennheiser makes headphones pricier than that ;p

@allquixotic: ._.
I'm PRETTY sure I can easily find something pricier XD

probably ;D

@allquixotic I actually meant this

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Not too hard, with a little magic

2:35 PM
@Bob: actually not much need for it.

@Braiam I know. That's what Bob was referring to.
Right, Bob?

@allquixotic I was talking about the id not being rendered!
D:

OH.

;p
@Braiam: you probably took too long

@Bob funny thing is, Beats' bluetooth headphones run almost as much as the Steelseries H Wireless in retail stores here in the US. yet they're infinitely worse in every way

Bob
2:36 PM
@allquixotic I actually thought I was referring to the Meelecs, but that works too! :P

@allquixotic @Bob Do you guys recommend the steel series H? I love my logitech G930, but 2.4Ghz at my place is oversaturated.

@Bob OH. O_O

Bob
@DarthAndroid I wouldn't know; I've never used them :P
Pretty much all of mine are wired.

@DarthAndroid If you've got money, I highly recommend them. I have had them for several months. Durable enough, great sound, perfect for gaming and music listening. Can listen across the hall with ease. Never had them drop out.

Bob
Except that one wireless one that I don't use.
The beeps annoy me on that one :\

2:38 PM
beeps?
clearly you're picking up someone else's techno

Only downside of them I can find is that the battery packs seem to be decreasing in their battery life over repeated charges. They're probably cheap lithium ions with a limited charge cycle. You get TWO, which is great, but you probably just need to run them empty; I prefer to switch them when it's merely low

Bob
Every beep is crazy loud. And then there's the re-syncing when moving between laptop and phone, and the desktop not having BT
@JourneymanGeek when you press a button on it, it beeps... at ~max volume

@allquixotic: are they standard or something odd?

Bob
@allquixotic Li-ions are affected more by deep discharges than charging cycles

@JourneymanGeek custom, AFAICT. they're roughly the size of the slice of cheese you'd put on a hors d'oeurves (or feed to a dog), very thin and fit in the palm of your hand.

Bob
2:39 PM
recharging often is better than letting it get to "empty"
@allquixotic LiPos, then

@allquixotic: that sounds like nearly every modern battery I can think of ;p

Bob
Li-ions tend to be pretty standard form factors... well, more often rigid and not that thin, anyway

@Bob I'd read that before, but somehow forgot it. Anyway, my usage habit is to let it get to 25% then recharge it.
If I start with a full charge on Friday evening after work, I will have switched out the battery approximately twice by Sunday night, with a full weekend-plus of gaming/musicing/coding/surfing.

that sounds ok to me.

Bob
whatever happened to this

2:42 PM
@Bob they probably realized that most people don't give a shit about being able to bend their phone
I just want the battery to last a while, tyvm
and for the bluetooth to stop dropping out >_<

@allquixotic: unless they have watched earth final conflict ;p

@JourneymanGeek oh, right... sci-fi that artificially drives demand for emerging tech

(which amusingly, looks clunky compared to modern phones)

that looks disgusting

basically the screen was pulled out of the body.

2:44 PM
I wouldn't want to own that! look at that thing jutting out of the side!

clunky buttons! gross hand grip!
it looks like a Palm Tungsten C with a doohickey on the side and a rubber thing stuck on the end.

Local TV had a lovely tendancy of debuting sci fi shows in the saturday afternoon slot
then suddenly re-scheduling it to midnight

a lot of the networks kind of pulled back from sci-fi in favor of reality TV around here -_-

2:51 PM
@allquixotic the writers went to strike again?

that makes me a sad puppy
or modern settings cause its cheaper

Straczynski wants to reboot Babylon 5, though :D
did you hear that JMG?

bet you $10 it'll be "darker and edgier" though.... -_-

I kinda hope he takes a different approach tho
The original b5 story had a few tweaks

2:52 PM
instead of "now get the hell out of our galaxy!", it'll be Mass Effect 3

Reapers Vorlons and Shadows using red lasers of death to kersplode skyscrapers on Earth

@allquixotic: meh, they should just make Ivanova the Chosen One.

it's not going to be B5 without Andreas Katsulas for me

lol
Yeah
a lot of the original actors died

2:54 PM
PRO TIP: If you don't want to die, don't act in Babylon 5

Claudia Christian is still around. Probably cause even Death is scared of Ivanova

Bob
@allquixotic They never use green or blue lasers :(

Actually, I seem to remember the vorlons used green lasers.
The Shadows use missiles

@JourneymanGeek the Shadows use black lasers, don't they?

3:05 PM
the implication in the mythos was always that the human- and minbari-involved conflicts with the Shadows and Vorlons were relatively mild border skirmishes compared to what those two factions were really capable of
the movie will probably be all about "this is the REAL war"

which never happens

the Vorlons and Shadows might not even care about the younger races if they decide to go all-out against eachother... they might "accidentally" blow up a solar system or two while fighting each other

Which they did ;p
(also, the humans and minbari eventually become like the vorlons)

@JourneymanGeek isn't it supposed to take a million years though?

@allquixotic: the last episode basically talks about human history until that point
and its implied sheriden ascends

@tombull89 IT'S A TRAP!
GPO is retarded anyway
if there is any way at all to get executable code onto the machine and run it, whether it be VBScript, PowerShell, Java, VBA inside of Office, JavaScript in the local zone, ActiveX, batch files, or the good ol' .exe download, people are going to do what they want with your box -- admin rights or not
even without that there are still an infinite number of possible pages where a DOM-based proxy could be hosted, so someone could visit arbitrary sites without even needing to set a proxy in the browser settings
if you're giving computer access to people who are going to expose your organization to significant legal risk, you're doing it wrong
you have a people problem and you're trying to solve it with technology, which never works
it just frustrates and complicates the lives of legitimate users performing legitimate activity, while being only a temporary barrier to the ne'er-do-well

10:39 PM
