@Tanner Yep, sure did!
I'm no bounty virgin anymore

lol surprised you didn't pick one up during the Win 8 challenge.

I'm preparing for the next moderator elections. Am I ready to become a moderator?
Have a look at my previous nomination: superuser.com/election/2#post-446882
I'm going to have significantly different text in the nomination pitch, but are the flag counts, reviews, etc sufficient? Should I be worried about Meta participation?

yes on MSU participation @DragonLord

@studiohack: I seem to find it difficult to find good questions to answer on Meta. Any hints?

@DragonLord sorry, stepping out for the evening. As for hints, just watch for questions and if you're the first to answer, you can get some easy votes in on the easy ones. A lot of MSU seems simple explanations...

12:10 AM
@studiohack, thank a lot. I'll certainly spend some time on Meta...
FYI, I scored 18 (+33/-15) during the primary phase of the 2012 election.

I don't do much on MSU (or meta anywhere, really) so I guess I wouldn't make a good mod. I'm very much a "in the trenches" guy who spends 90% of my time working on answers to valid questions, and 10% of my time voting down and closing bad questions, and 0.001% of my time looking at meta issues
@DragonLord +33/-15 suggests a substantial minority thought you'd be a bad candidate, maybe due to your inexperience at the time or similar

My rep was around 5.3k at the time of the election.

based on what I've seen, rep on the main site isn't tremendously important for mods -- mods are more like janitors in that they need to be involved in the meta issues for the site (flagging, explaining why questions are good or bad, defining the topicality of the site, cleaning up behind users, burninating tags and users, etc.)

I remember having about 500 flags on my record then--I earned the Marshal badge during the election.

a mod's role is not to answer questions, so the user's level of activity on the site and their account's age, their meta posts, their flags, and how well known they are in the community, are better tools for deciding whether someone is a good moderator or not, than things like main site reputation
if anything, someone with very high main site reputation should be hailed as a person with great expert knowledge who spends a lot of time helping users, and these are the "heroes" of the site who deserve recognition, but not in the form of a moderator job, because moderation just assigns responsibilities that deal with problems, whereas experts are focused on delivering solutions
that's partly why I don't think people like JonSkeet or JourneymanGeek or WilliamHilsum (or myself, really) would make good mods, because it's pretty clear from our rep that our focus is on supplying our knowledge and resourcefulness, not doing a janitor's job
and we're probably more useful to the community that way

12:24 AM
What does set me apart from the others is my ability to find the stealthier spammers. I'll start taking Meta more seriously from now on--I want to be able to stand for the community. 21 questions for +146 and 7 answers for +22 is definitely not enough, based on what I'm seeing on the election pages.

@DragonLord I'm not a mod so I can't really advise you on what you should do, but just answering questions (or asking good questions) on the main site is not going to be the primary determining factor in whether you should be elected.
I can say from experience that, in practice, a lot of clueless voters tend to vote based solely on reputation on the main site, and many people have become mods on various sites just because they had the highest rep, but I'll say that anybody who actually thinks about it for a moment will realize that main site rep really isn't that important for a mod.

quickly popping in before I really leave lol
@allquixotic, and @DragonLord FYI: mods get an inbox notification for EVERY new question on Meta.

for instance, I've been around since about August 2012 and I have 600 or so more rep than @studiohack, who's been around for 3 years and 6 months. I don't say this to pick on him, but just to reinforce my point that being a moderator isn't about rep
and being an active contributor isn't about being a moderator, either. it goes both ways.
which is why I only have 40 flags

@allquixotic I got elected with around 6500 rep. I don't know a super lot, but I edited and voted a lot.
you guys should see my votes and edits. it's crazy.
to further reinforce @allquixotic's point, one tends to have a LOT less time to earn rep on SU, if you're a diamond.

@studiohack I vote a good bit even on questions I don't know the answer to, or topical questions that are just bad (downvote :p) and I edit a good bit, but the parts of the site that I'm extremely weak on are meta and flags
I just don't do a lot of either

12:31 AM
From now on, I'll take a different role on Super User. I'll be spending a lot more time reviewing and voting. I'll keep MSU open in my browser all the time.

@DragonLord I'm glad that someone's willing to do it; it has to be done

I'll take full advantage of my "draconic" eye for spam, and I'll make sure that everyone can benefit from my experience.

but it's not for everyone
<---- not mod material :P

lol
Now I'm REALLY outta here. See you guys in 5 hours when I return to the Win7 license key saga. :P

okay @studiohack :)

12:43 AM
@allquixotic: Is this a good start?

A: Merge or delete learning & guide-related tags

DragonLordThe troubleshooting tag serves a valid purpose and should be kept. We need to make it clear that this tag be used for questions in which the OP is trying to diagnose a problem, rather than solve a known problem for which troubleshooting doesn't apply. I would definitely agree with deleting the ...

@DragonLord I really don't know much about how meta works or what the appropriate procedures are, maybe ask a mod, but that looks nice on the surface

Bob
Ah, roundabout hacks. @allquixotic will probably want to kill me now.

make sure your goals are absolutely clear to yourself though: you should find yourself doing mod-like stuff and thus want to become a mod officially, rather than saying, "I want to become a mod because I get a diamond and a blue name!"
if you naturally take on mod-like tasks because that's what's fun / rewarding for you, more power to you

Bob
Uni wifi is horribly unreliable (50% packet loss, >1.5s ping). On 2.4GHz.
My laptop does not have 5GHz wifi connectivity. My phone does.

if you want to become a mod because "leveling up" in the game of Super User is fun for you, maybe that's not the best thing

Bob
12:49 AM
Bluetooth tethering!
:D

@Bob awesome
why not use Klink though?

Bob
100ms average ping, no loss :D

Bob
Klink?
now I just need to figure out how to force 5GHz in Kubuntu :P

Klink is a no-root USB tethering solution for Android, with any OS on the laptop

Bob
12:52 AM
...My phone has USB, WiFi and Bluetooth tethering. Built-in.
It's also rooted, but that's beside the point.

then why are you using bluetooth instead of wifi or usb?
bluetooth has very limited throughput

Bob
I don't have a USB cable on me.

oh lol

Bob
And I'm using the tethering to route it through the 5GHz WiFi

in that case, nice hack
I applaud you

Bob
12:54 AM
...you normally want to kill me for doing things like this :P

nah, it's legit; I tether as a matter of course
what's illegit is installing Windows 98
I don't care WHAT you're doing with it; you just don't do that

Bob
I'll have to remember to bring my 5GHz USB WiFi dongle in future...

@Bob just make sure it doesn't run Windows 98

Bob
...

yes, your wifi dongle

Bob
12:55 AM
I'll have to check if it has 98 drivers sometime

@Bob NO. BAD.

I'll be a big participant on Meta, and I'm just getting started. Here's another example:
0
A: Is this question really not constructive, if so how can I salvage it to get some answers?

DragonLordYou could salvage this question by wording it as "What should I look for when considering proprietary RAID implementations?" and removing the references to specific NAS systems. As it stands, your question is specific to a particular set of NAS/RAID systems, which tends to draw opinions in favor...

I plan on becoming a moderator, and I'm committed to serving the community.

I'll take full advantage of my "draconic" eye for spam, and I'll make sure that everyone can benefit from my experience.

@DragonLord being active in Root Access chat can also help -- I don't know why but nearly all of the SU mods hang out here
you'll likely pick up best practices, good advice, leadership by example from the other mods so that you can better prepare yourself

1:24 AM
I think its also the other way around . They are often here before they become mods
@dragonlord there is a msu feed on chat, which helps

I input the User ID (which AFAIK is sequential), the rep and the votes in the SO primaries into Wolfram Alpha and there's the results

Anyone got experience setting up an email server from start to finish, including the dns stuff, that I can bounce some trouble shooting steps off of?

"no independent variable has any statistically significant effect on Votes" (with the confidence level set to 90%)
@Luke sure, once I get home (I'm still at work >_>)
going home now, someone statistical analyze my screen splat up there ^

I'm getting lunch then heading to my next place
A bit of background, then I'll ping you only once at the end
First off the customer is not very bright... Knows computer words but doesn't know what to do with them or why things are set up the way they are. Including insisting on a non-standard internal IP scheme of 123.123.123.0/24 and no DHCP... His $15,000 server is his router (again, against my wishes), and email is being a bitch
It works sometimes, sometimes it doesn't. I have been on the phone with the ISP (Telus) and with IPSwitch (who makes iMail, the server software they are evaluating for now)
I setup iMail to accept SMTP connections on either of its two NICs, and disabled relay (unless the user has authentication). The relay host is the Telus SMTP server
I set it up to look at the AD for username/password combinations, and that part works fine
Last thing I did with Telus was set the hostname (on their end, not the customer's end) to the hostname we wanted (mail.xxx.com), and if I ping from another computer, I get that address
If I do an MX lookup of mail.xxx.com, it shows as an error. If I do an A record lookup, it resolves fine. If I do an MX lookup of xxx.com, it points to mail.xxx.com properly. Great
Long story short, I created about a hundred test emails, going internal to his network, and external to my GMail, Hotmail, and company's email account, and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. The techs are saying it has to do with reverse DNS, but I don't know if I go after the registrar (which I can't change the name server addresses on, since I don't have a hostname they "recognize"), the ISP (who says everything is done) or IPSwitch (who says it's all configured)
I would like to know what I need to do with the reverse DNS, or at least where I should look next
@allquixotic That's it

1:49 AM
@Luke The owner of the IP address is the only one that can do reverse DNS, so this is the ISP. And it is vital you have a reverse entry to avoid drops.

Alright. On the device registration page, all I can change is the hostname (mail), and the domain (xxx.com). Is that what you mean?

On the registration page of what?
Can you let us know the public IP the email comes from and I'll take a look

mail.ventureelevator.com - 207.6.13.141
With the ISP they have, they register the device (AKA - the NIC, in actuality) and that is how they control that people only have x number of IPs

The PTR record is good - it is mail.ventureelevator.com

OK
So is all the DNS stuff ok? Should I then blame IPSwitch? Or their registrar? Sorry for the questions, but this is my first mail server I've had to set up

1:56 AM
Your SPF should work too - it is ?all which means, no policy

/deer in the headlights look

Your description above suggests the issue is with outgoing emails - am I misreading this?

Both

(spf is where you put in DNS the servers that are permitted to send email on behalf of the domain)

I just figured to deal with one issue at a time
I've never heard of that before... /opens Wikipedia

1:58 AM
Well if some of them are internal and failing, you can't blame anything external

K, I'm just logging into the web interface, I'm going to try to email my personal Gmail account, and then reply to it

Is this server only used for relaying from and to external addresses, or is it the internal email server too? So are there any issues sending emails between internal users?

Between internal users, apparently. I don't have a second account I can access to try that though

The DNS part of this all looks right to me

OK, going in and out of the server is fine... So I guess it's just an internal issue now
GDI

2:02 AM
Didn't you say it works "sometimes"?

Sometimes, ya

So is that test you did conclusive or could it have been one of the "sometimes"?

In an ideal, perfect world, I'd love for there to be a step-by-step for what to check and who to talk to
It could have been :(
But I won't know unless I'm sitting here constantly pounding the Reply All button

Step 1. Talk to SU chat Step 2. There is no step 2

Perfect!

2:05 AM
I'll try a test and see how my mail server fairs talking to yours
Some email servers do a grey-list, where the first email is always rejected, and then the retry is accepted

My addy is ddrtech@ventureelevator.com

This prevents a lot of spam, because spambots tend to give up after one go

Good to know
Hmmm
So that succeeded

Yeah, and nothing weird in the logs from your server
It just accepted the email with no shenanigans
Oh hang on

I can't tell... The log file right now is 2GB, and the computer I'm on at cadets (it's about to start) has a simple Atom processor... So not checking yet lol

2:10 AM
Sorry, I meant my server log, but I was looking at the wrong one

OK
Well, it just unfroze and started downloading

I got this `2013-03-06 13:07:21 unexpected disconnection while reading SMTP command from mail.ventureelevator.com (ventureelevator.c
om) [207.6.13.141]:53649`

Ummm... OK? What would I check for there? And is that 53649 the port number?

It happened on that last test too: 2013-03-06 13:15:48 unexpected disconnection while reading SMTP command from mail.ventureelevator.com (ventureelevator.com) [207.6.13.141]:57451
The 53649 number is the source port, but isn't important, it is random each connection
To be honest, I don't know if this is indicative of an issue, because the emails are getting through without issue. It might be a difference in SMTP implementations that my email server was expecting something to happen differently to yours
Your server did issue a TCP RST packet to the connection using port 57451, which isn't normal unless there is an error of some kind

Hmmm
I just got those first three emails
And 60MB out of 2GB downloaded of the log file...

2:25 AM
Ah. That could take a while then!

Ya...

Are you evaluating any other mail servers? mdaemon works pretty well I understand, if you are looking for a Windows option

Anyone with decent iOS dev skills on right now?

Honey, I'm home!
@CDD probably the wrong community -- not saying that nobody on SU knows iOS development, but it's much more likely on AskDifferent or StackOverflow

CDD
Probably true. Unfortunately not many are on right now - oh well

Anyone here handy with VBA?

sorry not me
also, morning

morning to you too

@soandos yes, very

@allquixotic is there a way to go through cells in a table and then split so that there is one line per cell? (alternatively, split cell by paragraph mark)

@soandos table? you mean Excel or Word?

3:58 AM
@allquixotic sorry, table in word

one newline, you mean?
I'm trying to figure out what you mean by "line"... I guess you want to take a row with multiple newlines in it and convert that to a multiple rows instead of the newlines
that can get complicated if you have nested tables. Word can have tables within tables so the structure is arbitrary, and a row doesn't necessarily mean a row all the way across like in Excel

@Paul No, just iMail. I told them the price of licensing Exchange, and they said eff that. I'll look into mdaemon though

@allquixotic correct. There are no nested tables.

@soandos what if you have an unequal number of newlines in a row in a table?

It should be cell only, not for the whole row

4:07 AM
@soandos let's say for argument's sake that you have a "flat" table with 4 rows and 3 columns.... you have one newline in the first (top-left) cell, then three newlines in the middle cell on the first row, then no newlines in the rightmost column... so you would, after the macro, have 5 rows in the first column, 7 rows in the second column, and 4 rows in the last column?
that's not particularly hard to do, just would take a bit of coding

thing 1 | thing 2 | thing 3
--------- | thing 2 |---------
thing 2 |----------|thing 4

turns into:
thing 1 | thing 2 | thing 3
aaaaaaa| ----------|aaaaaa
---------|thing 2 |---------
thing 2 |----------|thing 4
(aaaa is just empty space)

@soandos I'll see if I can code something up before I go to bed real quick

@allquixotic it would be appreciated
thanks

5:09 AM
well. I'm back.
@allquixotic the failed drive spins up, but Windows doesn't pick it up
(external SATA enclosure -> USB

@Studiohack try a livecd?
Also, does it turn up in disk manager?

@JourneymanGeek not sure if you've read the transcript or not, but I have a Windows 7 fresh install... but I can't read the last digits of the license key sticker on the bottom of the laptop. It's for a good friend, but I'm mad because I can't finish the install!
@JourneymanGeek and nope.

To which?

@JourneymanGeek I've installed Win7, but the license key is worn off of the bottom of the laptop
I can read all but the last 5 digits

Also, ya, saw that . I've got very little pc access this week.on su and here on my phone
And it keeps cutting out. Its weird, since this is an urban area

Q: Implementation for backing up folders/files to remote dest via ssh with hourly backup schedule and backup prior to system shutdown

tamakisquarePlease suggest backup implementation that meets the following requirements: Allows me to specify folders/files to backup Stores the backup on a remote destination via ssh Compresses the backup Allows scheduling hourly backup + backup prior to system shutdown

sigh

5:36 AM
@soandos I don't have anything that works, and I need to sleep (badly) but I have some war scars to share withyou

@allquixotic anything will be appreciated, and I understand

you can't use the Table / Row / Column / Cell objects in Word to do this, because as soon as you have a "nested table", the whole table all the way up to the top level can't be accessed on a row and column basis
so it'll work up until you do the first "split" of a cell to convert a newline into a new cell
and as soon as you do that, you can't go any further because you get that error

ouch

you have to use the Selection object, by "selecting" each cell (basically like clicking the mouse on it) and using relative movements between them
like Selection.MoveDown, Selection.MoveRight, etc
that's the only way I can think of to do it

ick

5:40 AM
here is my code, it does not work even a little, but all the code up until the "inner loop" does its job correctly
Sub x()
Dim t As Table
Dim r As Row
Dim c As Cell
Dim txt As String
Dim stxt As Variant
Dim substr As Variant
Dim num As Integer

'Select the table another way if you don't want the first one
Set t = ThisDocument.Tables(1)

'Probably does not work well at all with nested tables or non-flat table structures
For Each r In t.Rows
    For Each c In r.Cells
        num = 0
        txt = c.Range.Text
        txt = Replace(txt, Chr(7), vbLf)
        txt = Replace(txt, Chr(11), vbLf)
        stxt = Split(txt, vbLf, -1, vbTextCompare)

@allquixotic How about moving each cell to a new table, splitting as you go?

the replacing of Chr(7) and Chr(11) with vbLf is just to make the following Split() call easier

got it

@Paul great idea, would have to jump to the character range immediately after the end of the table, and insert a new table and work as you go
you might be able to build some kind of multidimensional array model of the "final" rows and columns of the original table (store it in memory in the VBA) and then write it all out to a new table
deleting the original
basically you need to look at the Word VBA help @soandos, especially things like the Range object, the Table object and the Selection object
Range is a beast, but almost everything in Word is a Range, so learn it well and you should be able to do it, it's just a real pain
you might also be able to do it easier using Apache POI (lol) because it's a nice and friendly API that actually has proper support for complicated tables

the failed disk works - Igot the recovery part to show up

5:44 AM
not sure how well POI retains file fidelity when modifying though

Dell Recovery partition...

@studiohack quick, run a SMART test on it, and if it says it's "good", you can try running a program to extract the product key
make sure you shut it down if the HDD starts making an awful noise

I read that the keys are heavily encrypted - one has to have the HDD booted to unencrypt

@studiohack well if you can get it booted into Windows then there are very well-supported, above-board programs to retrieve the product key

@allquixotic lol on the above board.

5:46 AM
one way to boot it would be to dd off the data onto an image file and boot it as a VM in safe mode
assuming the HDD hardware is stable and not on its last legs
a full disk dd might kill it otherwise
jesus christ I'm tired. I'm going to bed. I've been on StackExchange for what feels like 20 hours non stop

lol. thanks for the help @allquixotic. sleep well.

guys
a quick question
i have a shared folder on a pc connected to domain
windows
how do i allow all users on other PC to acces this folder..
the pc name for example is PCXYZ).. i want all users on this pc to be allowed to acces the shated folder XFOLDER on a certain pc. both PCs connected to the domain.
i can add a specific user..

@HaLaBi Have you created a workgroup already?

I tried adding "PCXYZ\users" but didn't work..
how to create a workgroup? it is connected to domain

@HaLaBi What do you mean by "connected to domain"?

I mean all PCs are connected to a domain...
same network

I've not used a domain before, but I'm pretty sure you either have one of those or a workgroup

12:09 PM
yes, u can ot have both..

sadly I have no clue how sharing on domains is any different from sharing on a workgroup

lets say it is a work group
how would u do it?

This one's for @jokerdino

rightclick, properties, share?

12:14 PM
yes..
how do i allow all users of a another PC to this folder..

'everyone'? ;p
well I suppose not a great idea
hm
wouldn't domain users be independant of PC tho?

yes
but in my case, i need to allow the local users of that pc to access...

blah, AFK :(

12:48 PM
@HackToHell actually the Intel drivers have quite smooth full-screen flash video ;)

Bob
1:06 PM
@HaLaBi Windows computers generally have no concept of users on other computers.
Except in a domain.
So, for a normal workgroup network, you would have to either set up a special account on the 'server' computer and get users to enter that username/password at the prompt when opening the shared folder, or disable password protected sharing, or mirror all user accounts for something a little more seamless (but not much)
I'm not too sure about a domain, but I believe domain users are generally not linked to a computer
so unless you put all that computer's users in a group, you would have to add each user manually to the sharing permissions

@Bob - Based on the screenshot the user is unlikely using Linux/Unix since the application in question is a Windows application. As I went through some troubles with a HDD that started to fail, I discovered that the page file, was unable to be moved by the normal software I use to defrag my system. Of course when your HDD wants to attempt to place the page file in the one section of the disk with the problem it causes stability problems. — Ramhound 19 mins ago
... ... ...
@DesmondHume I agree, Ramhound's advice there is not good.
Generally, a hard shutdown won't cause any permanent damage... but there is a chance of a file being corrupted.
Though, unless you are updating a program or the OS, binaries and libraries should be fine
other files may be mid-write
Personally, I'd test this kind of thing in a VM, or on a machine I feel comfortable trashing. Or, if I'm feeling particularly risky, on my main machine - though I wouldn't recommend that as the first course of action for anyone else.
