@Bob Yes, I nuked the entire file. We can always !!learn something to greet people manually.

Bob
:\
I wonder if it has any side effects for us?
Probably not...
Side effects?
Lets go poison pigeons in the park.

Bob
@allquixotic Nah, I misread part of the code.
!!godmode
20:11
@CanadianLuke That didn't make much sense. Use the !!/help command to learn more.
NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
20:22
Whoops:
Stuxnet infects ISS
@CanadianLuke How about angelmode?
@Hennes This guy will do it faster: youtube.com/watch?v=fV-8pdVAogg
@Hennes That's what they get for trying to enrich uranium in space!
@Hennes First Virus in space? one small step for man, one giant leap for script kiddies :-)
man... I wonder if USB mouse/keyboard combos can be a virus vector...
!!tell 12139999 yes
@Braiam anything USB can, just need to have a little flash stick somewhere hubbed in
@JimmyHoffa or even a little ASIC with preprogrammed instructions
it's harder on Linux because you can pretty easily lock down what libusb can do in userspace, but AFAIK on Windows more of the USB stack runs in the kernel, which is dangerous
@allquixotic That would be a lot harder to get the machine to accept instructions from unless the instructions were like windows+r somethingunreasonablenotarealurl.com enter
20:31
Stuxxnet has a lot of ways to infect.
@Neal Nice! I'd definitely hang out there. Can you also make it so that it works with HTTPS? I'd feel a lot safer. Seriously.
Unfortunately, my knowledge of JS is limited to what I learned from reading/hacking on SO Chatbot, and a few limited jQuery things I've read/written for my web application testing efforts. That is to say, while I'm competent in C#, I'd have a lot to learn to contribute to something using AngularJS and Node.
@allquixotic talk in the js room :-)
20:32
@Neal argh, okay. I'll visit on my mobile. One moment.
@allquixotic :-P
@Neal You could just create a STOMP server and rest API, then require everyone to write their own clients if they want to join :D
Either way, publish the contract, I might jigger with a client for the hell of it
20:51
I have a feeling that Dell support on forums are employees following scripts...
I got a feeling that Dell support (forum or not) uses scripts.
And that they always get confused when I call them.
And always in the same way.
@Boris_yo what employees? The method they use , the employees have been replaced by bots years ago.
@Hennes I got the felling that you need a xkcb comic reference...
Heh
21:00
My personal calls usually go like this.
1) I call Dell.
2) Dell support. A poweredge. Hold one while I trafer you to the business department>
3) HORRIBLE HOLD MUSIC
4) Dell professional... wait. You do not have a business with a gold support contract. Trabnsfering you back
5) Old guy. But I do not know anything about poweredges. Those are for prefessionals. Let me transfer you again.
21:15
I saw you say Dell which means i have to put this: What do you call a singing computer? A dell.
21:37
@Dave There's a fii-yer, burning in my RAM...
ah this room uses the same ping sound as game dev room
confused me then
/me has ping sounds disabled :P
@Dave "bew-bew!" the only ping sound worth it's salt.
@Bob I hope this hasn't happened, yet I know it has and it is simultaneously awesome and hilarious. A spectacular win for motherboards around the world.
are the sounds changeable? Would be nice to change the game dev's one to a game related sound
Hey I used to windows 7 and linux in dual boot
I formatted the drive with the grub loader and the linux install completely, gone.
on boot up I get grub rescue
How can I completelty remove it and just single-boot into windows
21:46
@Boris_yo I used to have God Mode enabled
22:00
@Dave uhm, I guess they are sort-a-changable.
you mean using a browser plugin ?
Start the firebug plug0in in firefox, load the page, change the path to the mp3.
I've done it before but it is not really a persistent solution
yeahhh but SO should give some different sounds anyway xD
game dev should have a level up sound
Just do not load SO. Way too high volume to bother with
@Hennes I used to love firebug, but chrome developer tools have completely overtaken this as of about a year ago. Though recently I'm pondering going back, recent versions seem to be having some real problems presenting code and setting breakpoints and things when you have background work / websockets going on..
22:03
Oh, I do not use it for dev work. Just for browsing the web
Fixing things when pages break.
Or removing a few sidebars which add-blockers failed to get
@Hennes Hehe seems like you always call same people...
Chrome is amazing for development
specially if you're doing HTML5 canvas stuff
@Dave problem is that chrome is broke by design...
how so ?
it "fix" stupidity...
22:08
@JebediahKerman Did you try reinstalling the old windows bootloader (the fdisk /mbr quivalent). Boot windows DVD, Shift-F10 and then some commands such as 'fixboot'
not following?
Mind you, I am purely going from memory here. Google it first.
@Dave Agreed, though I've been having a lot of problems getting it to present all the javascript source lately or accept breakpoints when I have a hand full of background interval/timeouts/websocket stuff going on, the dev tools behave like they're always loading
Didn't have these problems before a couple months ago
hmm strange
ive yet to start work on websockets
i hope it doesnt feel to experimental still
Yeah, strange and enormous PITA when that's the stuff that makes it all super userful is how good it is at breakpoints and debugging etc
@Dave Nah, they're pretty stable now. The libraries are all kind of late to the party to the point that they're very thin as the in-built browser APIs for them are really all you need for the most part. The libraries mostly just act as serializers/protocol layers from what I've seen because they are protocolless
22:12
i only need websockets for a chat room so i wont be going too deep into it
websockets are broken on my work proxy -_- I have to run a local proxy that does keepalive to make websockets work
@Dave That's the thing, there's not much depth. They're just TCP sockets with no protocol, and the API from the browser is super small/simple to use. STOMP seems to have caught on as a protocol to user over top of it which works plenty fine in my experience
what library do you use or you made your own ?
i been thinking node.js
Err, you mean for client or server? Node.JS is server
FiddlerCore is awesome for writing an intercepting proxy... just sayin :3 (not that you asked me)
22:15
yeah, server.
i just started using Sublime editor
its awesome
@Dave The only WebSocket server I've used so far is ActiveMQ so my web-browser clients can monitor messaging activity flowing between the servers
nice
It's got a built-in stomp websocket server, so nothing I had to stand up or do any coding for.
I just had to write the client that processes and displays the messages
If I was creating a websocket server I would just go with whatever server technology I wanted to use, and find the websocket library for it. Most any web server stack these days should have such.
socket.io might be interesting choice too
It's a Whole New World. amazon.com/Electronic-Arts-Battlefield-4-Download/… Giving 4 out of 5 stars to a program that CRASHES :-) Guess the days of having my computer alive for months at a time are comming to an (acceptable) end. (acceptable to some people)
Whats next giving 6.1 out of 10 ratings for movies that you wish you could get your money back. Where you watched the whole thing in HOPE that the last 1/2 hour would be any better than the first painfull hour?
22:27
its same with games "I played this game for 1000 hours im still not happy i want my money back!"
@Dave lol, cant find the ignore button, cant find the back button, and now we have lost the off button :-)
lol
22:43
@Psycogeek Local lab wants $112 for nVidia chip and $112 for labor but eBay china sellers sell that chip for $25-$35. I think it is real but refurbished however I saw people offer new chip for little higher price. I thought I would order it and ask laboratory to use it thus pay only for work but what if problem is inside motherboard?
Learn to swear in Klingon? — Andrew Grimm Sep 22 '11 at 23:26
@Boris_yo yup you would be increasing your risk a lot more to have a chip replaced, when it could be either. unless you saw that only a specific component was charred. when it is simple components other components around it can also be charred, or it could be caused by other components. Or if somone could fact out what was occuring that cause the issue, and had solved it , like a few times before for others.
@Psycogeek Maybe if I let them do problem check which is free if I agree for repair, they could err on their part and discover it was motherboard but would not charge me for replacement they did to chip.
@Boris_yo it could be something as stupid as some bad capcitors, a fried voltage regulator , or even some simple item on the board that fused ( open). dropping in a whole operational (as tested) board reduces some of the possibilities.
@Psycogeek What do you mean by last sentence? That replacing with another board reduces possibilities?
22:52
@Boris_yo Right if they have the skill and the equiptment to make minor repairs , instead of todays Replace the whole thing, they might also have the skills to test exactally what is wrong first?
@Psycogeek You think they test every pin out there :D
@Boris_yo Well i would drop in the whole board, very carefully and checking everything and setting everything perfect, and hope that covered it, at $150 loss to me if I guessed wrong.
Maybe they test paths, resistance, conductivity etc. of every component relevant?
@Boris_yo that might be easier than we would think. because many many of the pins are just for power. (they have many power connects because of the way low voltage makes it very high amperage to run the cpu, add the even smaller connections as they put in more pins still) So some pins can be unconnected and it could still work.
I don't know how they work, what is the process but I cannot envision suddenly video option at BIOS is again accessible and laptop works. I don't know, can something go wrong in the molding process? This requires very high precision, no?
22:59
@Boris_yo which molding process?
@Psycogeek Oops, I meant soldering. You first remove BGA chip and solder working chip back.
@Boris_yo oh you mean to land a chip perfectally with hundreds of little balls of solder . They wouldnt use that method if it didnt work (given the right equiptment) But that would be far beyond me. I could understand how it would work, but they got more balls than just solder balls to think it would :-)
@Psycogeek Refurbished motherboard = motherboard where components have been replaced?
I dont really see what was wrong with sockets. but things have gone Well beyond thinking that components would be socketed.
@Psycogeek BGA is socketed?
23:06
@Boris_yo Refurbished can mean "tested" , or minor thing fixed, very rarely would it be an extravagant fix.
@Psycogeek Better get $150 refurbished motherboard or try repair at same price?
Many refurbs are just returns that are tested and they find USer Error :-) problem is sometimes the next user is going to have the same problem that supposedly didnt exist.
So there are some "refurbs" out there that just pass from user to user , untill somone gets it who doesnt find or care about the problem. Because of that i avoid certian types of refurbs.
@Psycogeek What if we speak of refurbs shipped from China?
@Boris_yo I think so, whole piece presumably testable , can be dropped in as whole piece (less possible addded issues) . Plus if done right potentially a person could make the change over AND back again, within a 14 day return policy.
@Boris_yo Depends. Sometime you might have better luck with a regular human selling a part out of a originally operational unit. Like broken screen unit. As opposed to getting something that might be some kind of off clone, or goofy slight difference.
or even some "rejects" from the whole manufacture of the series.
@Psycogeek Most do not accept returns of motherboards that were found to be incompatible :(
@Psycogeek I checked several China sellers and they say motherboards are either refurbished or taken from used laptop.
23:22
@Boris_yo Well its ebay, everyone says they do not do returns. But if you listen to sellers they get Stuffed doing returns anyways, to keep thier numbers up and to keep from being herassed. So you (sorta) have more ability to return at e-bay than you would observe from the front. Also there Were regular people stating specific they would allow a return, if you ship it back to them. (dont cause a problem, state that it did not work, be professional, dont screw it up on purpose
Send it back at your cost.)
@Boris_yo Which is pretty much the same thing. Big pile of garbage from US electronics recyclers comes in, they pull usable sellable items, and turn them for a profit.
How tested it is can vary hugely. That is why i keep suggesting to get one that you know is broke :-) that you know What broke, and why it was discarded. A broken screen unit. Reverse it, and replace the screen and your nice keyboard, on a broken screen unit.
@Psycogeek What does this tell you? "Dell Latitude E6420 Motherboard 7TR3J 07TR3J CN-07TR3J w/ TIN Connector - PWA, PLN, UMA, TPM, Kybd FFC Cable 8JDJ2 Only"
With TIN connector? And what are these PWA, PLN, UMA etc.
Last one seems like cable that only fits some kind of Dell part number, which I think is keyboard. In this case I need to check part number of my keyboard to ensure compatibility...
@Boris_yo you know i dont do abbreviations :-)
23:40
@Psycogeek What do you think will happen if I put processor with Intel IGU into motherboard that also has this on-board Intel GPU? Would BIOS see them and what if these will be both same Intel video card? lol
Just notifying you about the follow up in meta.so meta.stackoverflow.com/q/207131/210016
@Boris_yo That would require that you change to a different motherboard wouldnt it?
@BenjaminGruenbaum Thanks for the heads up!
@Psycogeek Hmmm I don't know. If motherboard supports processor with IGU why would it not show it in BIOS?
@Psycogeek "No returns or exchanges, but item is covered by eBay Buyer Protection." Interesting, I get to keep motherboard and have eBay buyer protection.
@Boris_yo I would not be making any drastic changes unless some other hardware hacker had done it before me (or if i had done it as proof of concept). Then folowed up with what problems or ramifications it could have. I MIGHT think i was getting somewhere by having a better revision, but even that would be adding more risk.
@Boris_yo no You No Keep, send back! dont abuse system.
23:50
@Psycogeek Will I get something back?
I need this sucker:
@Boris_yo You work nicely with the seller and fix stuff, so everybody is happy. (while they moan about it, and you listen to them and acknolege thier side of the issue)
@allquixotic aww is that Q getting downvotes?
(the one you just commented on)
I don't have the SU rep to see
I dunno, I can't see
wait, which Q?
I can't see downvotes on the meta.SO bot question
the one benji posted above
benji posted the meta.SO question
not SU
23:55
@rlemon yeah, plenty
the meta.SU question is getting hammered with downvotes, but the meta.SO question and answers is/are getting upvotes... weird
damn, well I think it is a good question and I think the comments / answers if ever viewed by an official might offer insight
@rlemon wait, on SO or SU? the SU one has already been read by at least two SE employees
and answered by balpha
@rlemon yes
no the so
the one benji just linked
23:56
this is going fine
I'm being struck with the most odd sensation. I'm just now realizing how heavily invested I am in a welcome message for an online community chat which is only used by a small fraction of its user base. But I suppose it is the principal!
I suggested an edit to the MSO question.
!!tell 12143564 xkcd 386
ohh yes, I am well aware I am him
but my legs reach the floor
otherwise, smack on
23:59
lol
hmm, I think I'm going to potentially feel like an idiot in a moment
I'm going to try a 30 30 30 on my old router
I don't have anyone to ask "Are you coming to bed", and my legs reach the floor, and my chair is much larger (executive chair); other than that, smack on.
if it fixes it, I probably didn't need to have bought a new router.
