11:00 AM
At minimum speed?

Bob
Doesn't really matter...
Assuming a good DVD and good drive, max speed should be fine
lower if you want to be safe, but it'll take a while

Ok :)
Burning started :)

IE: Out of memory

99%
Got it!
@Bob and now?

Bob
@unNaturhal Boot from it!

11:13 AM
mmmh
Ok :)

Bob
I'll follow along in a VM

I log from the other pc (or I try)

Bob
Oh.
If you can't, come back here and let me know. I'll give you a set of instructions.

Ok I'm here :)
The laptop is on the choosing lang screen

Bob
just click next

11:18 AM
Yeeeea!!!

Bob
Repair link there? :)

The screen with "repair your computer"!!!!

Bob
ok

Yess!!

Bob
click that, then it should search for installations
see if it finds any
it might not
that would be fine

11:18 AM
Yes, i't searching
mmmmh
Wait
I found nothing...

Bob
ok

The screen has two options
The second is selected

Bob
Press next anyway

And the textbox is empty
Okok

Bob
Open the command prompt
ok
first thing to try is bootrec /fixmbr
then bootrec /fixboot

11:21 AM
Windows canno find a system image on this computer
Attach the backup hard disk or insert the final dvd from a backup set and click Retry. Alternatively, close this dialog for more options.

Bob
though that Linux thing should have done something similar... wait what?

How I can open the prompt?

Bob
huh
press cancel on that screen
close for more options

Ah ok :p
Prompt opened :D

Bob
I forgot that screen appears :P
run the two commands above to be sure

11:22 AM
First completed successfully
Second too

Bob
then run bootrec /scanos

Successfully scanned Windows installations.
Total identified windows installlations: 0
The operation completed suuccessfully.

Bob
ah
you can try bootrec /rebuildbcd, but you aren't likely to get anything out of it
next step
do a dir /a:h C:\
You should see the file bootmgr there, and the folder Boot

Yes

Bob
good
now try the same for D:\
wait
no
dir D:\
Don't do the /a:h

11:26 AM
The volume does not contain a recognized file sistem.
Please make sure etc etc.

Bob
Is the Windows folder there?

Ehm?

Bob
ah crud

/a:h d:\?

Bob
no
dir D:\

11:27 AM
In c:\ there isn't windows folder

Bob
C:\ is the boot partition, it should not have Windows. D:\ should have Windows

Mmmh..
Ok, but it dir D:\ dioesn't work..

Bob
...damn
that's really getting weird
I did this a while back, but can't quite remember every step :P

aybe it had another name?

Bob
Try diskpart
list volume
How many volumes?
Specifically, look for a 60GB NTFS volume

11:29 AM
5 volumes.. from 0 to 4
60GB is the Volume 2

Bob
Does it have a letter?

Yes.. D

Bob
Ltr

But the collumn Fs is RAW

Bob
Oh crud
ok

11:31 AM
We have a prolem?

Bob
your OS partition is coming up as unformatted for some reason

(another...)
O_O

Bob
ok, now things get tricky...

..
It's ppossible that the program is wrong?

Bob
I wouldn't risk chkdsk on a RAW partition, if it even runs
diskpart reports what Windows sees. The fact that you can't read D: is an indicator :\
How many NTFS volumes are there?

11:36 AM
@Bob It means that running chkdsk could delete the partition?
Two NTFS

Bob
And the other one is your data one?

One is Data, and the other is 100MB partition

Bob
..

And the satus of all volumes is Healty

Bob
do you have enough free space to hold the entirety of your OS partition (i.e. over 60GB)?

11:40 AM
On the Data partition.. yes

Bob
good
the first rule of recovering a file system is to back up the data first
first thing to do is go back to Linux
and clone the partition into a file

Ok wait, I note down the report of diskpart

Bob
The output of diskpart won't be useful in Linux

Diskpart> list volume report:
Volume ### Ltr Labbel Fs Type Size Status
---------- --- ------------ ----- ------------ ------- ----------
Volume 0 F GSP1RMCULXF UDF DVD-ROM 2048B Healty
Volume 1 C Riservato per NTFS Partition 100MB Healty
Volume 2 D RAW Partition 60GB Healty
Volume 3 E Data NTFS Partition 193GB Healty
Volume 4 G SW exFAT Removable 242MB Healty

Bob
Anyway, once you get back into Linux, confirm the device file. Use sudo fdisk -l again and find the 60GB one. It was sda2 last time
Also, make sure your Data partition is mounted

11:45 AM
I close this prompt and alll the rest?

Bob
Type exit to get out of diskpart. Then you can just power off

Ok, now I have a pproblem..
I have to go to eat

Bob
?
oh lol
it's getting a little late here to
hm
confirm the device file
well

How?

Bob
I'll assume it's sda2 here

11:48 AM
I can leave everything open, I'll back in 30-40 minutes (I hope it) :)

Bob
Then use dd if=/dev/sda2 of=/path/to/file/on/data/partition
that will clone the partition to a file you can keep as a backup
then we can try things like chkdsk, fsck and testdisk to repair it. If something goes wrong, you can write the clone file back to the partition.

Can I have a question guys?

Bob
I'll probably disappear in about an hour
@EinsteinsGrandson ?

@Bob Ok, understood :)
I hope to find you later, bbut anyway thank you very very very very much for the help :)
Now I go to lunch, see ya :)

Bob
@unNaturhal bye! If I'm gone when you get back, good luck!

11:52 AM
When I have a notebook which has HDMI bus... and I am playing Blu Ray Disc on my laptop and want to send the signal via HDMI to LCD TV with 1920 x 1080 resolution... will the signal be of the original quality?

Why when I search for *.JPG files and sort them by size, many files don't show their size?

I mean HDMI has a bitrate of 10 Mbit/s and Blu Ray has a bitrate of 40 Mbit/s

Bob
@EinsteinsGrandson Wikipedia on HDMI: Bitrate 10.2 Gbit/s

My fault

Bob
@Boris_yo Try switching to the detailed view

11:54 AM
;-)
Thank you and enjoy the Olympics

Bob
@EinsteinsGrandson But yea, as long as your graphics card (and player) is good enough that it does not stutter, everything should be more or less the same as any other BD player
@Boris_yo It's sorting by size, not necessarily displaying the size. That depends on the view. In the tiled view, size is pushed out if the filename becomes too long, as you can see.

names are too big? three lines of text are there usually right?
filename
type
size

so when the names are too big the filenames extend onto the second line and hence everything else also gets pushed down?

yay, i got this damned thing working again

@JourneymanGeek yay!
sup there!

lol. Internet sucks in thirupur ;p

12:08 PM
Yes I think. Extensions are pushed down like this:

filename
.jpg
@JourneymanGeek Where?

@Boris_yo: small town in south india. Its the heart of the dyeing industry

Look here: Algeria sucks

http://www.netindex.com/download/allcountries/

Bob
@JourneymanGeek dyeing dying
well, with crappy internet anyway :P

Look here: Sudan sucks with upload

http://www.netindex.com/upload/allcountries/

@Bob: takes me two or three refreshes to even load a room
and multiple retrys to post anything

12:13 PM
@JourneymanGeek Are you in Thirupur?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Sounds like me going through tor
when 99% of tor nodes are blocked

@Bob: tor is faster than this

Bob
I swear there's just one unblocked tor node that I keep hitting
and even then it takes an hour to hit it :P

hell, my last dialup connection was faster than...
Oh wait. EVER DIALUP CONNECTION I HAVE EVER HAD other than the 1200 kbps modem we had pre internet was faster than this
hell, my last dialup connection was faster than...

@Boris_yo netindex.com/download/2,215/Mauritania Soon they'll have no internet at all! ;)
@JourneymanGeek I bet theres less bandwidth and more latancy coming from curosity ;)
Although it would be pretty awesome if the connection to mars was quicker lol

12:17 PM
It is in the news:

http://www.webpronews.com/iran-taking-state-infrastructure-offline-next-month-2012-08

Bob
@HaydnWVN Higher latency, definitely. Bandwidth is debatable.
Throughput would be low, though :P

That sucks
No more one-click install of userscripts :P

12:40 PM
@OliverSalzburg I've had that for longer, it really really sucks.

@slhck I just wanted to install AutoReviewComments on my laptop :P

heya @slhck

sup @JourneymanGeek!

not much ;p

:P

12:44 PM
trying to catch up on rss feeds, and wondering if I should snag and attempt to work out how RMS's internet over e mail script works

never heard of that

;p
Its on his page on how he uses a computer ;p
isn't *that desperate yet, thankfully*

There are 1,5k Low quality posts for me...
Why system says I dont have any?

@Diogo Could be because you have seen them all.

@Diogo 1.5K x $1 = $1500!

12:51 PM
And the 1.5k is for all users
In fact, I have 1.8 there

:(

So, I believe every post needs to be reviewed by more than one user

IIRC, it is 2

It was with the old /review, so the assumption seems reasonable

1:25 PM
Hi guys

hi

1:44 PM
Ok, I just discover that we have disgraced also grub xD
I can't start lubuntu now...

:(

Damned grub...
