@lamwaiman1988 codecs are handled differently in linux - different media players will either use system codecs or will have their own. VLC can play pretty much anything.

Your best bet is to get a livecd version of linux mint, this you can just boot on your PC without installing. Then you can test everything out, and see it all works as you need it to, try a few media players with your rmvb files and if it works out, then go for installation

Yeah sure, it will almost certainly boot faster and be more responsive, but whether this will be significant enough to encourage you to try running it as your primary OS is something only you can answer. If you use the livecd then you'll get a feel for this, but note that if you are running the cd off an actual cd (as opposed to a usb stick) this will be slower than when you have it installed.

You should look at dual-booting also so you can still use Windows when you have to

I would like to preserve windows for gaming. I planned to format my hard drive because the windows xp in my pc has already been corrupted by useless windows software, should I install windows xp or 7?

I can't install Linux first because some site said that when you install windows later, it will erase the boot program for linux ( because it is so arrogant )

@lamwaiman1988 Yeah, you have to be careful with Windows overwriting the boot sector. I find it easier to have two disks. Make one primary in bios, then install linux, then make the other primary and install Windows. Then you can switch back to linux, re-run grub (the boot sector menu application) and it will build a dual boot menu for you. Then if you ever need to run any Windows repairs, you can make the Windows hard disk primary, and it won't break linux

@lamwaiman1988 Yes, you'll need to make room for linux, it will want its own partition (preferably 2), and repartitioning is never safe where there is existing data (very often it works out fine, but you can't rely on it).

Interesting point - I'm noticing more and more 'speed issues' with oldish PC's and any kind of diagnosis reports nothing... Only real problem/info i've noticed is older PATA hard drives showing a SMART warning due to their age. Has anyone come across a diagnostic tool which monitors/reports Disk I/O usage within the OS so i could compare results between 2 identical PC's... 1 slow and the other 'fast-ish'? :)

so far the process has been, futz around with transferring contacts over bluetooth to 3 devices. Fail. Find that one of those devices has no BT at all.

install software off phone (yes. the damned phone has drivers built into a small bit of storage. Its the one saving grace of that pile of steaming cr**)

attempt backups, realise its no use. Hack together syncml settings off google's docs for other models. Upload to google, download csv (why is this not autosynced? Cat knows)

now I need to get the csv into the phone somehow

Well, .reg is not supported by default, but I guess you could write an own brush. But I've never done that.
