@hacktohell - back now... out a lot longer than I thought I would be!... Glad it is working now - but, I am confused as to how they got deleted in the first place! I haven't seen anything automated like that for many years :/ Oh well, happy to have helped!

Hey guys, is there a PDF viewer that shows me the total number of pages of the PDF document as well as the number of page that I see now?
in full screen mode...
I remember I saw once such PDF viewer on Linux
There was something like a clock.... in the upper right corner... so you saw where you are reading through the whole PDF document
when you saw there is only 1/4 ( like 15 minutes ) left ... it meant that you are going to reach the end of the document
I think it is called Evince...

Hi!

@Bob Morning Bob
Only two days to go

Bob

@Paul So... too big to fit in your pocket, too small (and lacking a keyboard) to really be productive... I never really understood the Notes :P

4:01 AM
@Bob Yeah, it is a strange attractor. I have a tablet for tablet stuff, and this will be a replacement for my S2. I will wait to hold one in my hand before deciding. But others have said it fits ok in pockets.

Q: What am I looking for in RAM?

nathpillandThis is the one area of computer building that still has me in the dark, and I think a lot of people are with me... There are many different types of RAM, with each company having high and low end sticks. What is the difference between the high and low end? Also, what do the numbers in the late...

this should be reopened IMO

A: How can I upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8 and keep my files and applications?

KronoSBefore you get started: There are a few things that you need to know before you get started on the upgrade process. What will transfer over during the upgrade will depend on the previous Windows version. Here is the current breakup of the upgrades: If you have Windows 7 you need to be aware...

@nhinkle Was this what you were looking for ^^ ?

6:53 AM
@Sathya you around?

7:16 AM
@KronoS yes

@KronoS goodness yes
it needs more references to 42 so i can submit it as a QOTW :P

Q: Change Windows 8 login from Live id to local account

SathyaWindows 8 asks for my Live login details when I login - I'd prefer to use a local password separate from my Live password. Is it possible to use a local password? What do I lose out on if I don't use a Live account password?

kronos on August 27, 2012

Windows 8 is out for MSDN account holders (including students with MSDN-AA access)!  And it’s set to release on October 26th.  With that there are bound to be tons of questions in regards to Windows 8.   This post is meant to be a collection awesome questions/answers found on Super User that are tagged Windows 8.  This is what we’ve got so far:

What is the difference between Windows 8 Pro and Windows RT?

How can I upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8 and keep my files and applications?

How do I exit a Modern UI app? …

@JourneymanGeek hey dont hurt him
@Bob hahaha
have anyone done release upgrading in debian? how does it work?
I just edited my sources.list but it feels so bad

10:26 AM
debian releases used to be so uncommon you didn't ;p
/me wonders how much throw this projector needs

lol fair point
they only made 6 releases so far

@jokerdino: and etch lasted a loooong time
thats what actually got me over to ubuntu

heh
ubuntu makes at least half a dozen releases

ubuntu has a stable release cycle
I'm not entirely convinced about the software ;p

software ain't that stable ;p
whatever people say about are false

10:30 AM
@jokerdino: debian is actually pretty damned reliable
and well.. ubuntu has been splitting off with debian, its good in a way (someone's gotta test the new crap) but occationally there's issues

@JourneymanGeek yeah trying it out now

/me would point out upstart, and its certain lack of documentation

there are more things wrong about ubuntu other than upstart

Oh, for a server ;p
I don't need to worry about unity (I run KDE) much
wayland seems interesting if they don't fork it

right then

Bob
10:33 AM
@JourneymanGeek Well, it's an upstart.
Pun intended.

lol
@Bob: is a great init system...
if you can work out how to use it. And no one on SF managed to. In the end, local lug ubuntu mailing list helped me solve the issue

Bob
Hm.. does anyone know of a (cheap/home?) router that can easily throttle/QoS by LAN port?
Or how to do so in dd-wrt? :P

hm
how long would it take for me to reach 2k?

SU..

10:36 AM
somewhere in between 5 days, and the rest of your life

@JourneymanGeek you can't go wrong..

lol. Fudge is amazing ;)
@jokerdino: more seriously? There's a tipping point. And good and bad days.
Its really hard to tell

fair enough.
i should be able to reach it one day.

11:08 AM
Just get someone to bounty you 1k

@jokerdino faster than it'll take me time to reach 2k in Ask Ubuntu

@OliverSalzburg lol not a bad idea
@Sathya i hope so too. :P

12:07 PM
@JourneymanGeek nice doggie...

Anybody here who know how the certificates of Eduoroam work?
IEEE 802.1X stadard

12:23 PM
My cat just turned off my computer wtf

Cat will not be denied ;)

It's hiding behind my computer and sleeping. She just rested her head on the power switch of my power sockets

Stuff like that can seriously ruin my whole day
It gets me so far off my tracks

lol
I generally have plugs away from dog level

Bob
12:28 PM
@OliverSalzburg You need a cat proof UPS!

granted, its so I don't need to bend down to turn em on

@Bob Now that you're saying that, I feel really stupid for not owning one already :D

12:45 PM
What do you think guys?

lol
I have one of those
its pretty nice

@JourneymanGeek Yea? It has laser sensor...

@Boris_yo Not a fan of wireless peripherals

@JourneymanGeek It is big and good in ergonomics.
@JourneymanGeek But did you notice it is "Manufacturer Refurbished"?
Never bought "Manufacturer Refurbished" peripherals...

yup. Could be returns
its a crapshoot
the mouse itself is pretty nice

12:53 PM
@JourneymanGeek Definition of crapshoot? 50% / 50% ?

depends on far too many variables.

1:11 PM
@JourneymanGeek Yes, and who knows why it has been returned...

1:49 PM
@Boris_yo Copyrighted image, no image of actual product, focusing on his M310, shipping costs almost as much as product, short message, ...
You're buying something that you're planning to touch for the next few years. I wouldn't get such things of ebay, ever, though you could be lucky...

@TomWijsman Well that is because every refurbished product he sells differs in condition?

@Boris_yo They should outright ban pictures like that to be honest.

@TomWijsman Copyrighted pictures?

And for that matter, he also doesn't list the dimensions so if I were him I could troll you. :P

@TomWijsman Troll? What does it have to do here? You mean I could be trolling him? Not vise versa.

1:53 PM
Read the previous sentence again. Trolling you by sending a much smaller or bigger mouse, which could yield unusable...

@TomWijsman I don't understand why trolling. I am buyer here so I should troll.

It's like selling a HDD that has a fake partition size / USB stick in it.
@Boris_yo How exactly can buyers troll? I'm talking about scamming...

@TomWijsman That's outright lying. Right! Scamming, not trolling.

@Boris_yo Yet, there's nothing you can do about it if you bought it.

Scamming and trolling is not same.
@TomWijsman Nothing? Ebay Buyer's Protection.

1:55 PM
How else would a seller troll?
@Boris_yo Ebay Buyer's Protection doesn't protect you if you buy a product of which the size is not listed and you end up receiving something that's not the size you would expect.
I could sell you a chair that looks big on photo and you end up getting a 5cm x 5cm x 5cm model just fine, if you fall for the article not having its dimensions listed. Nothing you can do about it.
Class art trolling / scamming / ... ;)
But hey, he's guaranteed, so it's probably not going to be like that.
Although I suppose he's 0.5% comes from somewhere, though...

@TomWijsman He is Top-Rated Seller...

Still, he doesn't come over that way.
1 out of a 151...

@TomWijsman Is it about this mouse? Negative feedback I mean.
@HackToHell I don't get the humour here...

2:19 PM
Good morning SU! Today I'm trying to convince someone that they need to be plugged in to the network to get online. They're not buying it...
I need more coffee...

lol
wireless!

@r.tanner.f You are ISP's sales agent?

Thought about that. I don't know what to do... (also I'm nearly 3,000 miles away from them) If plugging in a cable is hard to accomplish, I hope to dear God that the wireless device is plug and play..
@Boris_yo Nah tech support for a company with locations all over the US

@r.tanner.f Then they don't need internetS TV is better, no?

most these spots amount to home network's. just a router and a couple computers.
@Boris_yo then they'd wonder why it doesn't work without a coaxial plugged in >_<

2:27 PM
lol
MAGIC INTERWEBS!

haha, and we'd be back to the wireless idea. do we use rabbit ears or run a cable?

TESLA FORSAW THIS!

@JourneymanGeek TeslaDome H.A.A.R.P

@Boris_yo: tesla did not muck around

@r.tanner.f Run with cable I guess

2:29 PM
he nearly destroyed new york. WITH SCIENCE

@JourneymanGeek really? hadn't heard that one

@JourneymanGeek And H.A.A.R.P burned poor dolphins with Ion Cannon.

Tesla's electro-mechanical oscillator or earthquake machine is a steam-powered mechanical oscillator invented by Nikola Tesla in 1898. The machine which Tesla tested was small, around seven inches (178 mm) long, and weighing one or two pounds; something "you could put in your overcoat pocket". It was reported that in 1898 Tesla's New York lab was nearly shaken to pieces by this little device, operated by five pounds of air pressure acting against a special pneumatic piston device. Houston Street lab Tesla established a laboratory on Houston Street in New York at 46 E. There, at one ...

@JourneymanGeek Ah this device was in C&C that impacted half damage to everything?

@Boris_yo That would be the Tesla Coil if I'm not mistaken ;)

2:33 PM
@OliverSalzburg No, not Tesla Foil...

Hey guys.
:)

@Boris_yo Also C&C Red Alert :P

@OliverSalzburg That thing was like charging for several minutes and when screen flashed you could spot all your units half damaged.

tesla coils are real
and awesome
also tesla turbines

2:35 PM
@JourneymanGeek You took a charge?

which are bloooody awesome
charge?

Heard about TESCO coils?
@JourneymanGeek I don't suggest charging iPhone from it.

@JourneymanGeek Yeah he took a charge... Innovative.

2:56 PM
"Put a dead line to a dream, and they becomes Goal [sic]" ... coworker's email signature... in an absolutely huge cursive font... can someone help me claw my eyes out?
I can't help thinking "Put a live line to a dream, and they becomes Electrocuted Dream"

@allquixotic I hope this coworker speaks English as a second language... Otherwise it's unforgivable and you should revoke their signature editing permissions.

actually they claim English as one of their native languages, but it's "South Asian English", which is basically so common as to be recognized as a separate dialect or entire language unto itself, but it's certainly not in line with European or USAian English
problem being, our customer's POCs speak USAian English... :/

Either way, I've always found phrases or quotes in signatures to be unprofessional...
Even if they're good ones or an idea I agree with, still rubs me the wrong way every time.

I'm all for the creation of another language that better suits English learners from the middle east region, then standardize it and make it well known as a language; but trying to pass it off as what we call English in this country... well, let's say that 10 - 20% of my time in the office is spent transforming their English into ours
it's not even the position I was hired for, nor would I be even remotely close to out of a job if the work went away; but I spend like 4 - 8 hours a week doing technical writing on their documents
which, if they could write in US English, I wouldn't need to
our customer isn't really that picky, either. they do complain about the quality of the documents if they somehow reach the customer without being tech writing reviewed at all, but they won't make an issue out of little things like a typo

3:13 PM
@allquixotic Whose quote is that?

A coworker's
I don't know if they quoted it from somewhere or if it's their own. The quote has no attribution in their signature.

@allquixotic I think it is wisdom from genious.
@allquixotic You understand the quote by yourself?

lol....

@allquixotic It's a bad retranslation from this: goodreads.com/quotes/…
It was a quote from Harsha Bhogle

@allquixotic What? Action speaks louder than words. Stop dreaming and start acting.

3:21 PM
the things that I'm most proud of accomplishing in my life have not had a deadline associated with them.
it seems like a quote that a manager would love because most managers love deadlines

It's a self-motivation type of quote. :P
Some people need defined goals to feel motivated. People like me. :P
(sometimes, anyway)

@sidran32 Ye!
@sidran32 "Become President of USA by 2033"?

I don't have to feel motivated to accomplish anything. I just do. And sometimes, by accident, it turns out being a good use of time.

@Boris_yo Thought about it but I'm not really in the mood.

@allquixotic Then this is for you:

3:24 PM
haha no.

@sidran32 In the mood of what? Chatting now?

funny, but no. I don't work in sports. :P

@allquixotic It can also apply to anything in life.

@Boris_yo I thought about it but I'm not really in the mood to become the President of the USA. :P

@allquixotic Waiting for mom to wash your socks? Well then don't wait and Just Do It!
@sidran32 And I don't have the kind of personality, skillset and responsibility to be president.

3:27 PM
I have the personality/skillset/responsibility to be a technical manager. That's my plan eventually. Right now I'm just a grunt

@Boris_yo I actually thought about what I would do if I was. I think I might, but I would never make it since I have no legal training. And I don't think I'd want to deal with that kind of stress anyways.

But I'm not going to do what Harsha Bhogle says and put a deadline on my plan/dream to become a technical manager. Because I find that things just come to me naturally if I work at them. I don't know if it's blind luck or skill but it works

@allquixotic Grunt like them?
@sidran32 Yes and 1 wrong word in UN nations conference and you could start WWIII!
“The moment you put a deadline on your dream,it becomes a goal.”

- Harsha Bhogle

But it can also be otherwise:

“The moment you put a deadline on your dream, you stop dreaming and get on with life.”

Deadlines just stress me out. I call them dreadlines.
I accomplish when I look up at the blue sky and can smile because I have nothing preoccupying me. Then I can go and tackle the implicit goals in my mind.

3:37 PM
marquee? lol

instant ban

they're using that on SU?

that particular user was trying to use it

why banhammer them? the question is, why was it accepted to begin with... if it's showing up in the html source as valid html shouldn't that be like bypassing markdown?
I'm not saying don't ban them. I'm saying fix the software so that undesired html tags never make it to the source

I was being sarcastic.

3:40 PM
@allquixotic And how do you cope with deadlines on your job i.e when you boss tells you to complete that in next hour?

Fact is, un/insane HTML isn't stripped, it's just silently ignored.

@Boris_yo, I pretend they didn't ask me to complete it in an hour and just complete it within however long it takes me, which is usually less time than I'm allowed, so it works out ;)

@slhck marguee is misplaced.
@allquixotic So if thug would stick a gun to your head and tell you to hack 128-bit encryption, you would stress out and fail?

@Boris_yo I wouldn't be surprised if the OP has no clue of how HTML tags should be nested if they're still using marquee :P

I doubt I'd be able to hack 128 bit encryption regardless of whether someone stuck a gun to my head
or I'd say give me a week with 100 high CPU x-large Amazon EC2 instances and I'll do it

3:48 PM
@allquixotic Bruteforce?

yeah
bonus points if they're sandy bridge or newer... AES-NI
or just... send a time machine into the future where we've proven that P = NP and come back with the engineering technique for translating a NP problem like most encryption cracking into a P problem that our computers can solve in poly time

@Boris_yo Some people just have different styles of operating. I'm ADD so having deadlines can help, especially as it gets to the end. Adrenaline increases focus. Hence my propensity to procrastinate (though I don't recommend it!)

I'd be awfully disappointed at how unimaginative nature is if P != NP.
err

@sidran32 But ADD is ADHD

@Boris_yo I know. I said ADD to emphasize that I'm not dealing with hyperactivity.

3:52 PM
@sidran32 Then I don't understand why they combined 2 terms.

I see crumbs in my keyboard... I need to clean it out at some point.
@Boris_yo I just didn't want to type out "attentional ADHD". :P

@sidran32 do you like baseball?
I'm eating lunch!

@allquixotic I don't mind playing baseball. Watching it is boring. :P
Also, I need to get back to work :P

Use this:

http://www.buyincoins.com/new_en/details/magic-high-tech-cleaning-compound-super-clean-slimy-gel-product-2977.html

that stuff really works

3:53 PM
@Boris_yo Not necessary. I just need to pull the keys out and blow air into it. But I may need it for one of my other keyboards. I used to eat over it in college. It's super grimey

@allquixotic Compound gel? Yes it does.
@sidran32 It is bad to eat while watching TV/PC - bad digestion, feeling of hunger still, fattening etc.

@Boris_yo I disagree. But it is bad for your keyboard. :P

/me eats while watching PC
om nom nom nom nom
/me spills cracker crumbs all down in his keyboard

/me eats while planning world domination

>Harsha Bhogle is the son of A. D. Bhogle, a professor of French, and Shalini Bhogle, a professor of psychology. He went to Hyderabad Public School, then studied chemical engineering at Osmania University in Hyderabad. He also did his post graduate program in statistics from Indian Institute of Technology Mumbai , and PGPM at Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad.
>After graduation, he joined an advertising agency and worked there for two years before moving on to another two year stint in a sports management company.
lol. I love people whose careers go off on a crazy tangent from their education

3:58 PM
Actually, to me, it looks like he had no direction in life, but was smart enough to be successful anyway. :P
Oh wait, that was his parents. Now it makes more sense :P
> Shipping Estimate Monday September 24, 2012 - Tuesday October 16, 2012
> Not yet shipped
is impatient

that's a pretty big range

Ya. And I want it now. :P

any guitar geeks in here?

I'm a guitar pick geek, but not a guitar geek. I need an unusually durable and thin guitar pick to open my OtterBox

@allquixotic haha still whining about that? =P

4:09 PM
I got it open, but I need a sustainable solution. Hence guitar picks

how thin we talking? 1mm? those are pretty sturdy

thin and sturdy enough that Eric Clapton would play "Layla" with it

@sidran32 I also have ADD. When you are talking with someone and suddenly others come close and make noise around you, do you lose you attention?

/me has Attention Surplus Disorder (ASD)
because I don't want to be blamed for being responsible for the national deficit

@Boris_yo I can. Depends.

4:23 PM
@allquixotic Clapton uses 1mm.
or at least thereabouts
I just had two people try to log in to the same terminal server under the same account, and they couldn't figure out why it was kicking the other one off each time...

tell them to buy some TS CALs
oh. same account. nm
well you could have one log into the console and one log into a session
that much should work....

@sidran32 Do you also have trouble hearing in background noise? I have and I don't know if it has to do with ADD though. Ear doctor says it is because of nervous condition that I don't pay attention to.

@Boris_yo I don't filter sound well but I don't attribute that to ADD. I think it's just another quirk of mine

I work in a corner cubicle and there is a ton of foot traffic past my cube all day long... people going to restroom, kitchen, talking to other coworkers.. my boss, boss's boss, etc... i think i'm developing a nervous condition from it because i constantly glance up at my rear view mirror on my monitor

@sidran32 As of background noise I meant bus, machinery, motors...
@sidran32 Does ADD bother you while driving a car?

4:44 PM
maybe ADD bothers him while answering questions about ADD

@allquixotic obligatory "I have AD-OH LOOK A SHINY THING!" joke...

I just thought that photo was epic, so I posted it. Nothing to do with the conversation

5:01 PM
@Boris_yo Hard to be specific about stuff like that. Overall, yeah, I think it does. It's something I've had all my life, so I can only compare to others. I got an official diagnosis and treatment has helped improve my life, at least.

@sidran32 Doesn't it represent danger on roads?
@Luke What is so epic here?
Guys, when you reinstall same Windows, do you perform format or just delete Windows in MS-DOS and then reinstall? Or you also defrag before deleting Windows?

@Boris_yo It could, I guess, but if I'm not fit to drive, then I wouldn't have gotten a license. If I can't drive, then I won't.

I'm probably more dangerous on the road than someone with ADD when my blood sugar is up because my vision gets blurry

@allquixotic You suffer from diabettes?

@Boris_yo How are those donuts not epic? I suppose it would be funnier too if you've watched breaking bad.

5:04 PM
not diagnosed but i do get sugar spikes

@Luke I agree, that photo is epic.

i havent passed out from it or anything, but i definitely can't just snack out on sugary stuff, nor can i go very long periods without taking in at least some glucose carrying foods like bread

@allquixotic Don't we all, though? Unless you mean inordinate sugar spikes.

for best driving results i eat whole grains and avoid sugar

@sidran32 Aren't you confused/lose focus when arriving on crossroad and watching all these traffic lights? Aren't you come in nowhere?

5:05 PM
@allquixotic I think that's typical. I get that too. Though diabetes is in my family, so I'm at risk if I don't watch it.
@Boris_yo It's not like that. That's not ADHD.
What do you mean by "come in nowhere"?

@Boris_yo Watch Breaking Bad, as @r.tanner.f and @sidran32 want you to do

@sidran32 No am not talking about Hyperactivity, but just ADD.

Breaking Bad freaks me out. Watching it almost gives me panic attacks. <3 that show.

@Boris_yo I'm not talking about hyperactivity either. In truth, when there's a lot of stuff going on around you, I think that people with ADHD (attentional) tend to operate better.

5:08 PM
I need to find the animated version

There's theories that ADHD actually was beneficial to early humans. When hunting and gathering, that kind of mindset, where your attention is not fully focused in on your task and you're easily aware of your surroundings, becomes beneficial to your survival.

@sidran32 Hmmm... I guess if everyone had ADHD, no car accidents would happen in our world.

isn't there a way to hide images on SE chat?

It's only in modern society where it becomes a "disorder", due to what society expects of us (sitting in a cubicle, doing monotonous tasks 8 hours a day, 5 days a week).

i'm very annoyed at having that image on my screen on my work PC

5:10 PM
@allquixotic I'm sure there's a browser setting to hide images, or a plugin?

i could always do this
and this
and this
and this

@allquixotic Sorry, I'll stop then

well i could use Chrome but it doesn't work with SE chat when setting its user agent to IE
and i can't get out to the internet without setting UA appropriately
chrome has that "kick @%*" extension that lets you shoot html elements like playing the Asteroids game. that one is fun... but cant use it for SE chat

If you spoken concept of internet back then when Stalin existed, they would put you in bedlam. That would mean disorder as considered by modern society back then. @sidran32

@Boris_yo Not sure I follow. But this is what I was talking about:
The hunter vs. farmer hypothesis was proposed by Thom Hartmann about the origins of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children and adults, suggesting that these conditions may be a result of a form of adaptive behavior. Hartmann developed the hunter vs. farmer idea as a mental model after his own son was disheartened following a diagnosis of ADHD, stating, "It's not hard science, and was never intended to be." However, more recent molecular and clinical research has given support to the hunter vs farmer theory. Nonetheless, some researchers used the hunter vs. farmer idea ...

5:29 PM
lol, Fluendo is dropping support for Moovida Pro on Linux because they can't support all the distros out there, so they want to give me a refund, but they want my bank details, so I'm like, nope.avi

5:39 PM
bank details? O_o account number or something?

yeah
the email reads like one of those western union nigerian scams except that it's only $10 they're offering to pay, and there are no grammar mistakes, and the email headers are (purportedly) valid
$10 isn't worth me giving my bank details in the clear through email

Ookaay, I got the Necromancer badge for getting an un-accept on one of my answers...

wow Sprint doesn't allow special characters in passwords...

Oh, it looks like the question got merged but doesn't actually say it.
cause those answers definitely weren't there before
Not that I've got a problem, I was just confused
So basically I just paid 15 rep for a silver badge... is that a good exchange rate would you say?

@Mokubai I'll take two at that rate.

@Mokubai Whoops, sorry for that :P

@slhck As I said, no worries, I was just confused by the rep loss and other weird answers that I hadn't seen before
More by the other answers tbh, I'm used to random rep losses and gains happening behind the scenes

6:13 PM
@Mokubai Yeah, seems a little weird after merging but it's really exactly the same quesiton

@slhck Oh yes, definitely exactly the same question. Problem is that there are now two identical answers :S
My favourite rep-loss (sorry to those <10K): superuser.com/questions/429796/…
It's my favourite because I was umming and arring about deleting it myself and Ivo kindly made the decision for me.

haha

I had been fuming with the downvote for a while with the words "why the heck is it my fault the drivers aren't signed?!?!" going through my head

@Mokubai Hello
@slhck @Mokubai Do you know what this device does?

that is my favorite method of conflict resolution on SU. I think like a dog. Step 1: Detection of dispute or problem. Step 2: Wait 15 seconds for problem to go away. Step 3: Start howling pathetically. Step 4: If problem does not go away, start deleting things randomly until problem goes away.

6:25 PM
@Boris_yo No idea, cba to look it up :P

@slhck What's CBA?

-1, shows no research effort :P

With a last name like "Jenkees", I thought his music would be vacuous pop crap. But I wasn't expecting: deep complex harmonies, interesting synth beats, and a mix of pure instrumentals and rap with an actual harmony/melody. Wow
Maybe I judge too easily because of the Leeroy Jenkins thing...

Kernel... Y U delay ~1.5 seconds. :(

it's just once on bootup, right?
probably calibrating some sensor or something since it talks about thermal zone. unless you're developing an embedded device where something taking 1.5 seconds at bootup is fatal, I'd say don't worry about it...

6:36 PM
Yeah, still shouldn't be there.
@allquixotic I'm just working on a 1-1-1-1 boot sequence just to learn in the progress.
Really learns you even more how Linux is built up...
1 second kernel, 1 second init/rc, 1 second xorg, 1 second gnome.

that's less learning and more developing if you ask me. if you have to make significant changes to components to achieve that lofty goal, you're not just learning how stuff currently works, you're developing for a particular use case
and you'll probably end up sacrificing data safety or amortizing costs in at least one area where you shave time off... which can just muck things up later...
a lot of Linux drivers are really slow on init though... allocating large areas for working space, etc. don't know if you're booting a full system but if you try to load drm and one of the open source graphics drivers, look out, hehe... those take like 3 seconds to boot
a lot of probing to figure out how to initialize the card without crashing it
