12:44 AM
Yay, 200 days consecutive :D

2 hours later…
2:32 AM
Congrats!
I feel sad though. I got Mac and Linux running... Start to restore windows 7 from back up, and it wiped my drive

yay, it finally let me in
hmm, google reader is a lot faster in list rather than expanded mode, unless you have a load of entries

About to buy the x230. Anyone think it's a terrible idea? :P

@nhinkle: not hugely
reviews seem ok, even if 'island'/'chicklet' keyboards annoy me ;p

word has it that people who don't already have a thinkpad love those keyboards. the only haters are owners of the old ones :P

There's a reason ;p

2:43 AM
hi

of course, they don't sell any laptops in my size anymore with that keyboard, and it'd be silly to get a previous generation laptop

My brother's asus and my dad's mini inspiron has the same style, unless lenovo has some secret sauce in their varient of that design (which is almost plausible), I just can't type on those
would either end up getting used to it, or carrying the smallest mechanical keyboard i can find ;p

i hear they do still have some secret sauce

Hmm Mac side us normal

XD
I'll find out in another 4 years
If i don't drift over to the mac side ;p

2:47 AM
No the restore didn't do anything :-\

3:15 AM
hmm, I wonder if i can find an RSS feed reader that will sync with google reader...

3:27 AM
Is superuser.com going to cover Windows RT? As it does not cover Android and iOS tablets, how could it? But then, there would be no SE site for Windows RT.

I see

@paradroid, we now do cover those things

I'm looking forward to getting a Surface RT

Thats actually the reason we allow tablet (not phone) questions now - it should be in the FAQ, and there's a question on meta on it
(sorry for delays... darned sucky internet ><)

3:31 AM
@nhinkle It's the new ThinkPad layout that is the big problem, not the scrabble keys

@paradroid everything I've read basically said "only die-hard old fashioned fans will hate the new keyboard, everyone else hates it."

@nhinkle That doesn't mean much, as how could someone miss something that they never knew?

@paradroid: precisely ;p

Lenovo has been changing stuff to appeal to people who would rather have a Macbook, hence adding trackpads and keyboard that are worse to use, but look nicer.

3:36 AM
the new trackpad is 'ok', but i still prefer a trackpoint or a proper mouse

The lack of forward/back buttons is the worst thing for me, as they are very useful. You can use them with your little finger while using the trackpoint, so you do not have to move your hand at all when browsing.

... no back/forward buttons?

They have gone. Been replaced by PgUp/PgDn. Awful.

.... that makes little sense
I suppose thats fixable if they didn't get rid of the PgUp/PgDn buttons on the cluster upstairs

I think it's possible that the next generation will see yet another new keyboard, as I think it will need to be redesigned for Windows 8 silver sticker. Designed for Windows 8. Charms key, etc
Like for Windows 7 silver sticker, keyboards had to have the Windows key redesigned to have the logo within a circle. So they are strict to the point of being pointless.

3:42 AM
guys it still comes with a trackpoint. you can also remap keys to your heart's desire, and there are touchpad gestures for forward/back if you want

ahh, so thats the reason they did it ;p
@nhinkle: having a built in/downloadable remaptool is one of the nice things with thinkpads ;p

anyhow, i like touchpads just fine, so i'm not complaining

disables his capslock ;p

@nhinkle But there are fewer physical keys, so...

Oh, I like the new textured/trapdoor touchpad

3:44 AM
The old keyboard is very close to the standard IBM PS/2 104 key keyboard

mine has the oversized delete key, which annoys me ;p
At some point i need to swap it with the insert key, but lazy ;p
and i use my blackwidow at home for typing

I'm going to try out the Windows Server 2010 Essentials beta this weekend. Looks fantastic.
I've been using Small Business Server Essentials 2011 for my home domain, but this is a good upgrade for it.

You have a home domain? That's beautifully nerdy.

Because now it has the media streaming stuff from Windows Home Server 2011 (which has not been replaced).

When I have a proper home someday, I hope to have a home domain.

3:50 AM
2010 is an upgrade from 2011?
@nhinkle: I am seriously considering it at some point ;p

Oops, 2012.

i don't have enough computers to warrant it right now

@nhinkle I've had a home domain since around 2005 I think. Makes things much easier when you have more than a couple of computers.

I have about 8 systems active right now ;p

Especially when you are using many VMs

3:52 AM
3, soon to be 4 of those are mine >_>

@paradroid if i weren't just renting a house with 2 other people i'm not related to, i would definitely do it
someday :)

2012 has DirectAccess that only needs a single server and public IP address. I'm looking forward to using that. Unfortunately it looks like you still need Enterprise client-side though.

@nhinkle: If i can get away with it, hypothetical future home will probably have a server closet ;p

@JourneymanGeek I've got this rack cabinet: sklep.zpas.pl/…
That's a glass door, although it doesn't look like one in the photo.

3:57 AM
@paradroid: I currently live in a store room ;p
Still waiting for that to load. On holiday in the land of slow internet. Standalone apps, and opera turbo (thanks @sathya) ease the pain a bit, but its still slower than that rower from niger in the london olympics
@paradroid: nice ;p

4:36 AM
i have a friend who recently won a Samsung Series 9 15" ultrabook. He's looking to sell it since he's already got a MBP. Anybody interested in buying? He says he'd sell it at a pretty significant discount. Oh, and he's an occasional super user! (no, it's not me)

5:02 AM
Everyone, please take a moment to think about the applicability of the default comment templates before posting them. Complaining about link-only answers that should include the essential parts of the answer here and provide the link for reference isn't useful when the link is to i.stack.imgur.com, or to a product web site. For the latter, it'd be much better if you took the time to link to this meta topic instead.

A: Firefox Add-On for closing multiple tabs except some

avirkHow to Geek has some Hotkeys: Ctrl + 1 will always select the leftmost tab. Ctrl + 2-8 will select each of the tabs in order from left to right. Ctrl + 9 will always select the rightmost tab. Mutiple Tab Handler may be what are you looking for. Some feature are listed below: Buit-in fea...

Someone downvote with this reason
Those hotkeys don't work in Firefox 14. — Mechanical snail yesterday
I'm completely socked
@DanielBeck is that right?

Users are free to downvote for any reason they choose. Some of them are stupid.
There was a user a while back who downvoted every question not related to a specific Windows version, as these questions were "useless" for him.

@DanielBeck hahahahaha thats very funny reason
@DanielBeck yeah users are free but as you mentioned some are stupid that is quite enough for me to calm down

Well, the tooltip says "Question shows no research effort, it is unclear, or not useful" — he just took that a bit far.
You could try to repro the issue on FF14, and maybe add it to your answer. Some users revert votes when the posts are properly fixed.

@DanielBeck then I have to update my answer every time as FF willl release a new version lol

Depends on how extensive you make this. You could just add "Worked on FF13" and be done.

5:31 AM
@DanielBeck yes that is what I was expecting........Ok have to go now and I'll fix it on next LogOn, you are free to edit if you want. Bye

5:50 AM
@avirk there was a downvote and feedback to tell your answer is wrong. There's nothing wrong about downvoting that.

Bob
6:20 AM
@avirk Works for me on 14...
(we are talking about the Ctrl + <number> hotkeys, right?)

Bob
huh
secure your wifi networks
:P

8:09 AM
Anyone up for changing the duplicate at superuser.com/questions/352165/… ?

@TomWijsman Could you explain it please? The OP just mentions appear to be causing my desktop to disconnect from my own hub, but not that he connects to the other networks. Michel's issue seems to be different.

If there are other known networks, you disconnect from your own network to connect to another network if that other network if that one is better.
Windows itself does not automatically connect to any random unsecured networks on its own.
Which is why his exact duplicate makes way more sense than the current one in place.

Right, but regular interference would cause the same issue, minus the reconnecting to the neighbor's wi-fi, right?

While it was the closest duplicate back then, I really don't see how fixing the channel is going to make it stop swapping networks.
Exactly.
> however I only want to connect to my Wifi hub and ignore all others

@TomWijsman True.

8:20 AM
I don't mean to nitpick myself, but now that he has explained how it's not a duplicate I feel it's more right to use the other as an exact duplicate as the likeliness for it to solve the problem is much larger.

Looks good as it is now.

8:55 AM
Boeing 767 on the consecutive days

I'll lose mine starting tomorrow :/

9:46 AM
@Sathya I just hit 200 :D
@slhck :(

Anyone with any hints on SBS2011 and disabling SharePoint? Nothing useful on the MS site about it :(

Man, I flagged this as off topic on SO — 22 hours ago — and no one handled the flag :P

10:02 AM
@Flexo - even with the specific "other reason"? There wasn't this concept of "helpful" earlier, so I never had such issue. But if it does, then it's a problem, in my opinion. You lose valuable information to identify spammers, if answers are just deleted, and moderators lose track of it. — Gnoupi 45 secs ago
any mod to confirm this?
(well, the comment before, my bad)
If someone flags for moderator attention, and the post is then auto-removed by spam flags, you lose the initial "detailed" report?
@slhck Yeah, SO mods are obviously a bit overwhelmed by content and flags, and tend to decline anything which should be solved by community votes, from what I notice

@Gnoupi Haven't been in that situation yet, so might wanna ask @Sathya
Actually, it's a huge problem. Community flags kill the post, but not the user.
Whereas a mod would just destroy the user or merge into Deposit.

@slhck The thing is that this deposit mechanic never really took off on the rest of SE. which is pity. Because you lose the information for the next time the same persons try to post again more ads

@Gnoupi Yeah, it's actually really useful. Should be standardized in some way.

But as a result, I guess they wouldn't really care. Finally, on SO, it works good, you don't even need a mod, the community is large enough to remove spam posts themselves
in a few minutes
If they did, they would have extended it a while ago. See yourself the date of creation on the deposit account

Yeah. SU is much different. There's always a mod before community ever gets to delete anything.
And it was even worse a few years ago where no one had 20k

10:10 AM
What is it with people editing others' posts simply to suit their personal preferences regarding formatting?

@DanielBeck Link?

@slhck Moreover, that even the deposit accounts on the other sites didn't really last: meta.stackoverflow.com/a/60296/132632
apparently there was a wave to create them... But I guess one of the community mods clicked "delete"
without thinking more than that

@slhck Not on SU, but I still don't see the reason. I took care that the screen shots don't appear like being part of the text, so it should have been good.

Ah..
@DanielBeck Pretty pointless IMO

@slhck But in general, I guess that SU is different because it's the ideal target anyway for such spams. Any "converter" question or other "outlook plugin" one.
It was actually thanks to SU that the "protected" status was created
to apply on that kind of questions
(well, it existed before, but not for moderators, if I remember I think only the SE team had it)

10:14 AM
@Gnoupi no, the history is still retained ( cc @slhck )

@Sathya history yes, but do you lose the alert?

@Gnoupi yes, the pending flags are dismissed

in my opinion, the moderator flags with a specific reason shouldn't be automatically dismissed
I'd open a meta topic on the subject, but that would look weird withough being an actual moderator :p

@Gnoupi It's fine, you'll have my vote :P

Or maybe i'll just ask for my diamond back..
Oh well. Lunch time
I'll post that this afternoon if nobody else does it before me

10:18 AM
@Gnoupi you should.

@Sathya Less easy without a direct "access", now that Jeff is away from the team

true.

Either way, it's stomach grumbling time
cya

btw, want to help me test out what you were askin' @Gnoupi ( before you leave- hope it's not too late)

@slhck This is why I hate using SuperUser. This just wouldn't happen on StackOverflow. "Pinned tab" is a technical term and I seriously don't understand what confusion is the "make more compact" causing. — Let_Me_Be 1 min ago
sigh

10:23 AM
@slhck eyeroll

lol
If you would provide this without the initial nonsense it would be perfect. Now you deserve both the bounty and a kick in the butt. But thank you for the information. — Let_Me_Be 3 mins ago

Damn. I only read the Q and just wanted to post an answer myself :-/

Bob
Firefox: 1,945,764 KB private working set
O.O

@Bob Firefox demands moar memory!

lo people

Bob
10:35 AM
That was one big memory leak :\

@JourneymanGeek hey

For the first time in ages, I now have a standalone RSS feed reader installed on my laptop. ;p

10:54 AM
Oh yeah. Starting a Windows XP VM for the first time in 3 years. That's going to be fun.

@DanielBeck: and painful
;p

I am out of sarcasm tags, but expecting delivery any day now.

Well, actually it ISN'T that bad if you haven't been using 7

SkyNET is coming:

11:00 AM
Any A/V guys on?... When you are looking at the specs of a cable that shows Attenuation loss (looking at Coax/Satellite RG6 cable), it gives a MHz to DB/100m chart, but, if comparing two cables, is a higher or lower number better?

smile!

Bob
@JourneymanGeek unless you try to update

@Bob: never had problems with my XP VMs, or 2003 vms

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I mean, it'll take a while :P

though I WAS impressed with the dodgy pirated stripped down windows 7 VM that my lecturer used for an assignment ;p

Bob
11:06 AM
huh

@Bob: I have a poor man's update server ;p
@Bob: My reaction as well ;p
chap even left the path to the installer on the VM
not that I looked it up and downloaded it for personal use, of course
Pardon any dupes, darned slow internet makes SE chat act wierd ;p

@JourneymanGeek Not even for 'self educational purposes'
?

@HaydnWVN: Maybe not even that ;p
sigh Least my internet is wireless

11:33 AM
Gimmie wires any day of the week :P

@HaydnWVN: ahh, but see, if my power went out, my internet would too
Even if its really slow ;p

Technological Singularity

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technological_singularity

@JourneymanGeek if the power goes out to the wireless mast, your internet still won't work :P

@HaydnWVN: point. darn thing seems to be struggling along
swears the damned thing has a 56k modem for backhaul

speaking of 56k modems

11:43 AM
lol

Apparently Jeff called himself Cyborg during BBS days. (special low BW link and text only link 2 for @JourneymanGeek )

@Sathya: Opera Turbo works great ;p
@Sathya: oh thank you
@Sathya: Opera Turbo works great ;p
but at the moment, SE chat glitches a little and I'm locked out from facebook till i get home ;p

I can see that :P
@JourneymanGeek woohoo :D ( and you're welcome ;) )

lol
I hope to hell this is faster in the other town i will be in
lol
I hope to hell this is faster in the other town i will be in
Worth a bug report? ;p

@JourneymanGeek closed as too localized :P

11:49 AM

:D

@Sathya: wierdly the text only version wouldn't load. The regular version does ;p

@JourneymanGeek LOL. that's strange indeed

I am also REALLY wishing the irc interface to this was functional ;p
(IRC is about the only thing i KNOW works 100% reliably on this)

Bob
SE chat has an IRC interface? o.O

12:04 PM
No

People were talking about it ;p
42
Q: IRC access for the chat?

jszWill there be any way of accessing the chat over IRC? As beautiful ajax interfaces are ... IRC is still #1 for chats.

@DanielBeck By the way macbundler.com

12:20 PM
ooooh IRC misty eyed
i've not been on QuakeNet/IRCNet for years...
several things in that post from Jeff ring true for me too... Not the illegalities though... The only 1 brush I had i was never quite 'caught'

I've never done anything illegal ;p
not that i'd admit anyway, certainly nothing fun

Back when i was 15/16 i used a credit card generator to pay for BBS access and some hosting
needless to say it didn't last long...!
goes to check if the domains lurking anywhere

ah nope, it was never snapped up

@JourneymanGeek heh, turns out that viewtext.org itself is down.

12:26 PM
;p
I switched over to feeddemon for rss feeds (its more reliable than greader, and syncs. The offline option would be nice, if i didn't need it for more than a week, and it was a paid option ;p)

Hi guys

hey @unNaturhal how's the restore/repair going?

@HaydnWVN Wrong.. very very wrong.. :(

oh dear, no progress or lost data? :(

12:34 PM
ugh

No progress..
We tried a great number of way to restore the bootloader
But nothing works..

what sorta restore repair?

corrupted windows bootloader it looked like, no restores worked as it's had a grub bootloader installed and then the windows one again with different installs

@JourneymanGeek Windows7 bootloader repair

Bob
@HaydnWVN the current problems are more likely corrupted system files

12:36 PM
@unNaturhal In that situation (and what i'd do anyway) is get another hard drive and a working windows install, there are many different recovery programs you can then run on the original disk to recover what information you can

Bob
considering we've rebuilt the bootloader from scratch, and it actually starts loading before stopping with an error about a certain file (driver?)'s digital signature
@HaydnWVN The original partition is still readable, which makes this even easier :P

@Bob agreed, but i've been in that repair situation before (admittedly not with Win7) and the windows install was 100% afterwards no matter what was attempted

Hey @Bob good afternoon :)
@Bob However, the driver error was not represented again..

Bob
@unNaturhal hi!
@unNaturhal what happens now?

@unNaturhal: can you get into the OS somehow, or is it just sitting there looking purdy?

12:39 PM
Now, it simply give the black screen error without starting

Bob
@unNaturhal error message? or just a black screen?
also, are you using the clean bootloader, or the old one (that was backed up)?

@Bob Error message that not involves a file
@JourneymanGeek What do you mean?
@Bob Eheh.. I tried some things yesterday

@JourneymanGeek No full OS boot, the situation yesterday was it always booking into recovery console rather than windows itself

Bob
@unNaturhal uhm... could you tell us what you tried and what effect it had? specifically, what changed the error? :P

Bob
12:42 PM
@HaydnWVN and came up with a driver error after nuking the BCD (delete + rebuild)

@Bob I opened the partition "System Reserved" in lubuntu, deleted all the things that was inside (but I saved them), and tried to restore the bootloader with dvd from this point... but nothing.. I think to have used a command in some wrong way

is away from his tools so is likely to be of little use ><

Bob
@unNaturhal uhm... ... :\
you might want to go through bootrec /fixmbr, bootrec /fixboot and bootrec /rebuildbcd again

*whispers nuke n pave! ;P

Bob
though I guess that would work if the bootloader itself is corrupt

12:43 PM
lol

@Bob Yeah, I got this commands, but not in your order.

Bob
then that partition should have \bootmgr and \Boot\BCD in it now.
what's the error now?

<--- did ~10 years of onsite field (business and home) support, soon learnt to carry multiple spare HDD's to nuke windows installs and reinstall rather than repairing them... Quicker, less 'net access needed (during dialup years in rural areas) and more resilient systems requiring less future support.

Bob
lol

this was all pre-win XP

12:47 PM
@slhck Ah, yes, SuperUser is just SO's kindergarden, the good old stupid thinking. Next question, maybe he will spell everything to us underlings.

@HaydnWVN: nuking and paving is the 'easy' way but not always the best option

Bob
ah
Windows 7 is normally fairly easy to recover

so there's loads more tools now, not to mention this new 'high speed internets' thing i've hear rumours of

@Bob However, I tried this things:
1. I take the oem-drv64.sys from a fried and substitute with mine (but backupped mine), and the error seems to be disappeared.
2. I deleted the entire partition (saving the content) and tried to restor from DVD. But the automatical restor fails and the commands works but windows doesn't start anyway.
3. I ask to a friend to give me HIS "System Reserverd" partition, and tried to start with this. It doesn't work. So I tried to repair from the files that he gives me, but doesn't work anyway...

Back in the days it made sense to do that, now a lot is easy to solve making a reinstall a PITA rather than something you can do quickly.

12:48 PM
wait, you have a backup?

Bob
@unNaturhal No, the BCD identifies volumes by GUID (unique ID)
you can't just copy one from someone else

It's just that proper analysis of the actual problem rarely happens.
You can be surprised by the amount of people not checking the event log...

Bob
@TomWijsman we also tend to have a lot more crap installed :P

@Bob Ah.. Neither using bootrec /rebuildbcd?

@TomWijsman: I suppose its a matter of whether solving the problem is important, or getting the damned thing back up ASAP ;p

12:49 PM
@TomWijsman Agreed, but then going from the server side of things, there are so many 'benign' errors in there that microsoft say to ignore :rolleyes:

@JourneymanGeek: Or getting yourself a fail-safe mechanism... :)

Bob
@unNaturhal if you delete and rebuild it, it's essentially making a new one

@TomWijsman: I call it being paranoid about backups ;p

@Bob Ah.. damned windows...

Bob
@JourneymanGeek back up
backup

12:50 PM
and having a planned regular reinstall cycle on some systems

@TomWijsman nuke n pave! nuke n pave! (It's a way of life)

@Bob What I can't understand is WHY the rebuild of BCD from scratch doesn't work..

@Bob: backups. MULTIPLE backups. known good backups, weekly backups....

Bob
@unNaturhal well, could you tell use the error message at the moment?

Back up, baby back up
Did you forget everything?
Back up, baby back up
Did you forget everything?

Back up, baby back up
Please back up, oh back up
Back up, baby back up

Bob
12:51 PM
there's really only two points of failure. the bootloader, or core system files

@TomWijsman Hi, how is your vacation ?

@Bob No error messages. Just the black screen with that says to put in the DVD to repair the system... This time it doesn't give a file corrupted or a specific error

@Bob The amount of things tried on the bootloader i'm inclined to suggest it's not that...?

It just says that cannot start the system

Bob
@HaydnWVN yea :P
@unNaturhal specific error message?
Does it literally say cannot start the system?
wording of error messages (and the code, 0xbunch of numbers and letters) are quite important

12:54 PM
@HackToHell Do you have a highlight on TS lyrics? :P

@Bob I don't remeber.. but however, if now I try to start the system without usbkey and DVD inside, it just goes in the repair section, you remeber?

Bob
though if it's asking you to use the DVD, then it's probably a bootloader problem we're dealing with... again

Vacation was very good, as always.

@TomWijsman: Obviously, ya fanboys ;p

Bob
...if it's stuck going into repair, then I really don't know
@TomWijsman oh, so that's why it looks so familiar :P

12:55 PM
@TomWijsman Wait wat, even if it from a TS song, it's pure coincidence ?

sadly dosen't have much music to listen to since he was an idiot and left both his music hard drive, and ipod charging cable at home
@HackToHell: thats what you want us to think

Bob
it's been ages since I last listened to TS :\

@JourneymanGeek Well, I believe you have a highlight on anything funny. Where else do the lolts come from...

@JourneymanGeek :P :P

@TomWijsman: or i spend a lot of time here

12:56 PM
@JourneymanGeek So how hot is india ;p ?

Nothing else would explain me sitting here with all the glitches i've been having with this unreliable reliance dongle

@Bob Appears the screen with "Starting windows" that the loadbar with "Windows is loading files" and after this appears the form that ask to choose the keyboard language

@HackToHell: its been rainy, so not so much so
and power cuts haven't been a huge pain ;p

Bob
@unNaturhal your recovery console loop is really annoying :P

The reliance dongle sucks tho ;p

12:57 PM
@JourneymanGeek problems with having a device with a proprietary charger ;)

@Bob Yeah, I know :/

sigh, I'm giving up on this … do we have a dupe maybe?

who told ya to get from reliance ఠ_ఠ

Q: USB drive becomes write protected after inserting it

user1302274Whenever I insert a USB drive in my desktop PC running Windows 7 Ultimate, it becomes write protected. Then when I use it on my laptop, I can't delete the files on it. I already tried scanning for malware and viruses. Can I repair this, eventually without reformatting?

lol, its the one my dad got

12:58 PM
Get vodaphones 3g one
It's nice and fast

@HackToHell: we use this infrequently. ;p

Bob
@slhck heh, there's a lot of these around

It MIGHT get faster when I hit coimbature
@HaydnWVN: problems with not planning

@Bob gimmeh teh dupez!1

Bob
I asked a similar question a bit ago
But it was actually quite different to most other cases of this :P
He implies that he can reformat to remove the write protection
