@iglvzx Is UltraEdit an option?
I personally like and use it.

@OliverSalzburg I haven't looked at it. I'll give it a try.

It's not free

Well, I can still try it out for 30 days. I'll see if it allows custom syntax

But it's the best combination of plaintext- and hex-editor that I've ever used.
It does
To my understanding the custom syntax support is quite extensive

@OliverSalzburg I can see that: ultraedit.com/files/wf/ahk.uew
That's a lot more options than Notepad++. lol

12:11 AM
A few hours ago I was working on converting an SQL dump from one encoding to another.
It was a 90MB file.
Most of which on a singe INSERT INTO line
I had it open in both NP++ and UE
Turned on word wrap in both.
UE took a second, NP++ hung and died :P

@iglvzx Notepad++ has support for Autoit. :P

@TomWijsman NEVER!

But having both tools at hand is still the best solution :)

I don't know why this user thought it was necessary to include his age:

Q: Windows Xp says connected to wireless but browser won't work

SethI I'm a 12 year old boy who wants to play minecraft on this old windows Xp (2001 maybe) and the Internet won't work. It says it is connected to the Internet and it says connection is strong but it won't let me go Onto Internet explorer. (it says cannot connect to page) I don't have Norton on this...

@iglvzx So people don't downvote the bad question.
Well, didn't help with me :P

12:23 AM
@OliverSalzburg Oh. lol.

actually, didn't we have an age limit?

@JourneymanGeek Yes. According to the TOS: "Subscriber certifies to Stack Exchange that if Subscriber is an individual (i.e., not a corporate entity), Subscriber is at least 13 years of age."
So, should we vote to close? lol
"Sorry, Seth. You are too young to hang out with the big geeks."

I don't think so, but the question is not very good anyway

I'm sorry for him. He's young and can't be properly helped in our Q&A format.
We could direct him to chat.
But the question is bad. I don't care how old the author is.

@OliverSalzburg I don't think so. You have to be 13 or older to use SE in general.

12:36 AM
@iglvzx Oh. I was not aware of that.

@JourneymanGeek Yes. According to the TOS: "Subscriber certifies to Stack Exchange that if Subscriber is an individual (i.e., not a corporate entity), Subscriber is at least 13 years of age."

Thanks for pointing it out

:)

yup
and there's legal reasons for that, liability and such
Flagged and commented to that effect >_>
some 12 year old kid somewhere is gonna hate me ;p

@JourneymanGeek That was a typo! I am actually 13, not 12!
Hopefully, that doesn't happen. It is better to just get this over with and delete/close the question.

12:48 AM
Agreed

CALLED IT! They edited the question
:(

@iglvzx NEVER SAY NEVER!

Underage user dealt with.
@OliverSalzburg chat would be even worse, legally speaking

I'll keep my age a mystery then..

1:01 AM
@nhinkle When people talk about their age online I generally assume they're lying anyway
How do you know I'm not an 11 year old? :D

that would be hilarious :P

Or one of the moderators, would be fun.

@TomWijsman There's that one kid on SO. He's 14 and ran for mod.

I'm actually 5.
4

But, he may not really be 14...

1:03 AM
@nhinkle Nah... You still have to be born, there's no age on your profile yet.

@iglvzx one of our mods is 15 xD

@TomWijsman pure evil...

@TomWijsman That's useless
All of my projects already have that :D

@OliverSalzburg D:

1:09 AM
Actually, they don't :P I'm a heavy ReSharper user and keep a very tidy ship

@iglvzx oh wait, is this in dog years or human years? ;p
@TomWijsman ahh, i presume perfect for when you need MOAR LINES OF CODE?

@JourneymanGeek I prefer to unroll loops. It increases performance and LOC ;P

@JourneymanGeek: Need an extension for inlining functions...

EGHDKMy computer makes a high pitched whine noise that initially was coming from my SSD, but now I recently installed more ram into my laptop and it makes a new sounds. I don't want my ram or SSD to die on me. Are there any tests to test both of these? Again, these are really high pitched whine(y) so...

Hmm, I did not award the bounty rep to anyone cause i did not get a proper solution, now what happens to that rep, it has mystically disappeared !

how is it different from status-planned?

Bob
@jokerdino There's that too? :P

heh :P

there are like a range of status tags

yeah?

Do you know is it possible to have 2 Firefox's on 1 PC each with different cookie storage

creating two profiles might do

You're talking about windows profiles?

browser profiles

11:34 AM
O.O
I didnt' knew you can have different profile on FF

@ChrisHateZ we all learn new things everyday. so don't be too worried about this

Interesting
I was orignally thinking about downloading portable version of Firefox and keeping it in different dir then my main firefox
Do you think that way i could have different bookmarks and cookies on those two?

i generally dislike portable versions but if it works for you, go ahead.
but i personally think creating two profiles is the best option that i can offer you.
let me know if you need assistance. time to gain some rep in SU to increase my credibility.

^_^
I'm sure i wont need help the guide on support site is very simple, thank you for all the information.

happy to help

is this fan meant for a heatsink or for a case ? quietpc.com/products/noctuafans/nf-f12-pwm
are only CPU fans PWM?

hmm, let me take a look
i've not seen a PWM chassis fan yet

Have you ever seen a 120mm CPU Heatsink fan?

lol
er...*thinks*
Most of my systems use stock cooling

how does PWM differ from the 3 pin ones?

one moment, referencing ;p

2:32 PM
yo, subscribed to SU newsletter xD

as i recall they're cross compatible, 2 pin controls speed through voltage, 3 pin adds tachometer, 4 pin runs at constant voltage with pwm control
tomshardware.com/forum/264968-29-plug-plug this suggests you can use a 4 pin fan in a 3 pin socket
example of a cpu cooler you can use a 120mm fan on newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835233003

where is the fan controlled with PWM?
and couldn't fan speed be controlled with the 3 pin ones too?
speedfan existed before PWM didn't it? and that states the fan % and it can be lowered in the software

and.. images.tweaktown.com/content/4/6/… instruction manual suggest it works on both

well, the advantage with PWM i suspect is more precise control of speeds

2:37 PM
Hmm; looks serious.

@barlop: ya, or even 2 pin ones, in theory
see the manual, it answers everything you were asking about ;p

@jouney, that's how you know so much? ok so fan speed can be controlled with either.. but with 4 pin it can be controlled more "seriously"!

@jokerdino Hmm, which instances were exploited?

@TomWijsman Kyle says affected users were emailed.

an email from superuser! not sure superuser can be trusted to email!
I remember setting the option to be notified by email.. and others too said they didn't get it.. perhaps intentionally as the idea is that the thought "superuser superuser" should keep coming into peoples minds whether a thread they've been in has been replied to or not!

2:45 PM
funnily, i was interested in setting up an account in SU blog. :/

lol
@barlop: the only time i got an e mail from them, was the free SU t shirt ;p
and that time, i went to check if it was legit ;p

oh yeah; yes that :P

has that and the hoodie.

i actually got one gigantic SE shirt

lol
also, SE addresses my mail to Journeyman Geek
which is hillarious, and will be a pain in the ass if for some reason no one was home when the postie delivered.

2:48 PM
hahaha
hm i don't think they sent it to jokerdino.
i probably added my real name in the mailing address

So, the SU / Gaming blog was not affected?

ask Kyle :)

because I honestly have no idea at all.
@JourneymanGeek i can't see the address :P

lol
blurred out for privacy reasons, of course

2:51 PM
oh yeah
are you registered in OBA ? i can just look up there ;p

yay, 12 helpful flags to my marshal badge.

Q: How can I pair two bluetooth dongles together?

techaddictI want to hack a device which connects via USB, and plug a bluetooth USB dongle to the end of the USB cable (using a female to female adapter), and then connect to that device from another USB bluetooth dongle connected to my computer. How can I do this? It is straightforward? I don't want to sp...

I am confused to how this guy even thinks this would work

Bob
What's this fascination with Bluetooth dongles recently?
There's a hundred and one ways something like that could be hacked together, but most are horribly impractical :\

lol
his method is impossible
he wants a pony. I see a room of horsecrap.
hm, does the KHANACADEMY tag make any sense?

Bob
3:22 PM
@JourneymanGeek 4/5 of the questions ask how the videos are made
And seem to be duplicates :\
And the tag was created a short while ago
facepalm

posted on MSU for now
the BT guy ... is an id10t

Bob
...
Oh, goody. You figured out you need "a microcontroller", and you need help with "the specifics". Uhm...
I can't help but think it's a little more complicated than that...

lol
I posted a very strongly worded comment.

Bob
Hmm
Does USB have any strict timing requirements?
Obviously, specific applications would, but USB in general...

hmm, i actually don't know
But he's glossing over guest and host mode.
Which is a fundamental thing
wikipedia suggests yes

Bob
3:33 PM
Heh... if he knew more about embedded systems design, this might be a question over a Electrical Engineering. But he doesn't seem to be anywhere near, yet.

lol
not really

Bob
Well, not as broad as it is

you quite literally need someone like ladyada or bunny huang to pull off something like that
or a raspberry pi

Bob
Let's see, if pairing could be accomplished, he needs to figure out how to send two way arbitrary data over BT
And then there's the rather intense power requirements, and the limited range... I think I'll stick with a nice wire.

lol
throw in a frigging computer in between
;p
actually closing it sounds like a decent idea
I don't give a shit about the rep ;p

Bob
3:37 PM
Well, the original question was valid
"is this possible?"

"No"
"I Think it is"

Bob
Now, it's not so valid ("tell me how to build one")

"No"
"You don't know anything"
GRIMLOCK SMASH.

Bob
hm
BT has a range of 10m line of sight from memory, while USB is 5m without active extenders
But BT would need to be closer to get a transfer rate anywhere near USB
so there's another reason
lol @random
That was helpful in closing some questions — random 47 secs ago
Looks like the tag is going to die :P

Bob
3:44 PM
o.O
He's saying a Pi is too bulky now?

lol
He definately wants a pony

Bob
It's under 10x10 (cm)!
Anything smaller would have to be custom designed, if there isn't an existing one. And it would have to be specialised, obviously.
With a Pi, you could do other things too :P
Anyway, a Pi is smaller than my phone...

I can't believe he has an iq of 160

Bob
hm
actually

and.. he asked another NARQ

Ell
3:50 PM
Hi guys

Bob
the PS3 controller doesn't implement any form of USB over BT...

Bob
@Ell Hi
It's USB or BT... facepalm

Ell
I was just trying to install linux mint alongside windows 7 then panicked and did a hard shutdown because I had a horrible feeling it was writing over my windows partitions :P

oh, if you could programme a chip to appear to be the the host for both sides

Bob
3:51 PM
@Ell Uhm.. backups? :P

and handle the BT stack
and. oh wait
lol

Ell
@Bob backups? what are they? ;)

Bob
Well, that's not the point. It's got two possible interfaces, similar to how a smartphone can connect over USB or BT

Ell
I don't have anything to backup on :P

Bob
But it doesn't do USB over BT :P

3:52 PM
@Ell: I usually have partitions of 1 gig side difference to avoid that

Bob
@Ell Uhm.. you tried starting the computer yet?

there is ONE wireless USB option i know of
its in my answer.

Bob
Yea, but that's an entirely different matter :P

Ell
@Bob no it all works and everything, I just thought it was amusing :L

Bob
@Ell I never tried to create a dual boot system.. too stressful
VMs all the way :D

3:53 PM
lol

Ell
I was using a VM but opengl wasn't playing nice :(

i have a triple boot
which i need to...
oh wait
quadboot
need to rebuild it at some point

Ell
so now I'm going to dual boot
has anyone used the linux mint installer?

nope
mostly ubuntu/debian myself.

Ell
well basically when I go onto manual partitioning mode, it doesn't show clearly where it will actually be installed
though I guess it's the partition who has a mount point of / ?

3:57 PM
yup

Ell
yeah I thought so

but this is why i have slightly different partition sizes

Ell
I just had a horrible feeling :L

Bob
Really? What PC specs would be required to run a PS3 emulator?‽‽

Ell
I have 860gb partition for windows data, the rest is free
but still I just panicked :P

3:58 PM
lol

Ell
Didn't even know you could get a ps3 emulator

NARQ. Deals with software that dosen't exist yet
ugh
Am i just pissed at him or is his latest question inane too?

Q: How does the Playstation 3 (PS3)'s "RSX 'Reality Synthesizer'", which is their graphics card, compare with the latest PC graphics?

techaddictPlaystation 3 utilizes a proprietary graphics card co-developed by NVIDIA and Sony. How does this compare with the latest PC graphics cards, such as the GTX 675, 680, and 690?

the help guide dosen't work

Bob
@Ell That's surprisingly low :P

Ell
4:00 PM
Yeah :L
anyway I'm going to try this thing again
wish me luck :P and hope i don't mess it all up
be back later :)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek The easy answer is, high end graphics cards completely thrash it...
Come on, it's 7 years old now :\

Bob
No matter how dedicated, if it was generally affordable 7 years ago, a high end graphics card that costs almost as much as the console itself should be "more capable" :P

but is it relevant?

Bob
Nope!
xD

4:02 PM
it dosen't seem to fit being an actual problem
should it be closed? ;p

Bob
> We expect answers to be supported by facts, references, or specific expertise, but this question will likely solicit debate, arguments, polling, or extended discussion.
That too :P

Bob
Here, take a look at this. I found someone who did something similar and gave detailed instructions. This guy did it with an NES and SNES controller. ppl-pilot.com/SnesHack/index.htm and the assembly for that project: ppl-pilot.com/SnesHack/nes_asm.htmtechaddict 3 mins ago

4:18 PM
ya
;p
so there is

Bob
Looks like it would be pretty application dependant, since there's no way BT is going to satisfy that timeout.
Chances are you would have to build a host that can recognise the device and emulate the device at the other end :\
Ah well. That pretty much confirms the massive impracticality of it all :P

lol
But what can i say. He believes its doable

Bob
Well, it is for some purposes
Problem is, he doesn't have a purpose in mind (apparently), and just wants to do it for the sake of doing it

Bob
Something like RS-232 (serial) would be relatively easy, considering there's a USB class and a BT profile for it:P
Stick a Pi in and it all works, who cares about timing

4:28 PM
lol
too bulky he says

Bob
...
Wait. He just said an iPod Mini battery...
That's Li-ion, probably 3.7V...

Ell
hi guys

Bob
First step, stepping up to 5V. Then think about BT and all that
@Ell hi

Ell
speaking from linux mint here, I don't know which partition to write the boot manager to
I have 2 disks, 1 120gb ssd
and another 1tb hdd
and another 1tb hdd

Process Explorer's autostart location <3

Ell
4:32 PM
I have 2 disks, 1 120gb ssd

This was the virus:

Bob
@TomWijsman I was just thinking that looked like a suspicious filename :P
Yesterday some "Security Shield" thing popped up. Stupid Java...

Funny how you won't find Walmart and similar around here. :D

And thank god for UAC virtualisation :P

Ell
oh darn. just found out linux mint 13 is out

Q: Should the Vote to Close option be altered?

Bon GartThis question and my comment there made me think, and it seems to me that to completely avoid any sense of a "pack mentality" that could be applied to when votes are cast to close a question, the current format would have to be changed. @Boris_yo yo! back!

@KronoS How do you make USB transceiver out of USB extension cable?

8:53 PM
@KronoS Thanks for the edit

9:10 PM
Hello? I need wireless connection between USB ports. Is it possible?

@Boris_yo It'd be custom... I haven't seen any yet though

@Luke Like connecting wirelessly USB Wi-Fi adapter and laptop?

@Borisyo No, it'd be a completely custom device to carry the USB signal... I'm assuming you have a USB device to plug in to a system quite a ways away from you? Is that correct?

@Luke Ye!

@Borisyo Then you need a custom set of adapters

9:27 PM
Adapters? Which adapters?

Not sure... I'll take a look though

@Luke How about wireless USB hub working on Wi-Fi or Bluetooth?

9:38 PM
Haven't seen one that will operate on Wi-fi or Bluetooth directly

10:52 PM
Don't most routers restart if you remove their power source? Or press the "reset" button? O.o

I don't think he has control of the router

Oh, I see. DoS is still a bad way to go about things, especially since he is using the hotel's services...

this is why i am just a little horrified ;p

He also doesn't seem to understand how networking works with virtual machines.

Jeez, this guy really has issues haha

@SimonSheehan ! Haven't seen you in awhile

@iglvzx Haha, it has been a bit, I've been busy :P

@SimonSheehan I see. We all have lives outside of Super User (Right...? :P). It's okay.

@iglvzx yeah, sometimes we have lives ;) I've been working a fair bit so didn't have much time

11:13 PM
hiiii

hello @JourneymanGeek

oops. turns out i am 109, not 9 flags from my marshall badge

Hmm. I think that question should be closed as too localized. We don't have access to the router or know what kind of security measures the hotel has in place to prevent the OP's goal.
