Heh. The Good Subjective, Bad Subjective label is specifically used on questions that aren't based on actual problems that you face...

ps | grep command_name will include the ps | grep command_name itself. — khotyn 14 mins ago
Argh!

Bob
@OliverSalzburg Uhh... that's a problem?
:P

@Bob He'd be able to solve the problem if he'd take the time to understand the suggestion.

Bob
@OliverSalzburg I guess it could be a problem...
wait
hm
wait, no it can't
facepalm

Another | grep -v grep

Bob
11:09 AM
@OliverSalzburg Is that even necessary?
bob@bob-VirtualBox:~$ ps
  PID TTY          TIME CMD
 1849 pts/1    00:00:00 bash
 1908 pts/1    00:00:00 ps
bob@bob-VirtualBox:~$ ps | grep bash
 1849 pts/1    00:00:00 bash
bob@bob-VirtualBox:~$

@Bob Not always depends on the version of grep

Bob
But it runs ps and pipes the output to grep
The grep command should not appear in the ps output...
Oh wait, it does?
Bleargh. I need to brush up on Linux. And command line piping in general.

it does;p
you could pipe it through another command that removes grep from it i guess ;p

Bob
@OliverSalzburg I guess it then depends if ps shows the arguments passed to the commands
Which is ps -f or something

gencha@d-m:~$ ps aux | grep bash
gencha    8981  0.2  1.5  25312  8124 pts/0    Ss   13:11   0:00 -bash
gencha    9013  0.0  0.1   7548   840 pts/0    S+   13:14   0:00 grep bash
As bash appears in "grep bash"

Bob
11:16 AM
I clearly need to practise more :P

@slhck I wanted to see if the user figures it out on his own, that's why I didn't serve him the solution yet ;)

Bob
This question should win a prize for random tagging... (nice edit @slhck :P)

@Bob Absolutely… I also love those where the title is just "Windows on Dell" and the question's about Photoshop etc. :P

@slhck :D

Some asked about a fourth moderator position. Once they see @slhck cleaning up the site, everyone'll wonder why there was more than 1 elected...

11:28 AM
@DanielBeck lol, you cleared twice as many flags than me :P

@Gnoupi Don't forget Troggy

hmm so you guys know who cleared how many flags?

@slhck I'm taking Wed-Fri off this week, so I don't have anything else to do.

@Gnoupi Not so sure how distached I am, given I'm still here every day :P

@DanielBeck Fair enough, haha
@jokerdino Yup

11:31 AM
@slhck thanks

@slhck Is this an attempt to create a community wiki / community FAQ topic?

@DanielBeck Seems like it, yup

@slhck what the fu-
The summary looks fine, but the actual answer? How many links is that?
I can also attest that they are unlikely to work if the filtering is set up properly strict (e.g. whitelist) :P

@Bob 99 :P

Bob
o.O
Actually, isn't this a questionable question (excuse the pun)?

@Bob Depends… we have a similar question

Q: How can I make my IP address appear to be from another country?

BrianHow do I make it appear that my IP address is coming from one country while I'm located in another? I live in Germany and some websites (like Hulu or Youtube) don't work because my IP isn't in the US. How do I get around this? Do I have to use a proxy or something? Moderator note Super ...

So I guess it's fine

Bob
12:18 PM
This kind of thing is likely to break a ToS/AUP... though I guess it could be given the benefit of the doubt :P

lol
tunnels some of his traffic through a canadian pharmacy proxy because there's some sites that don't bloody work on my home isp for no apparent reason ;p
georestrictions are vile tho

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Tor? :P

no. I actually have my own proxy, primarily used to access a webcomic, but also when sites like ars technica have wierd glitches

Bob
ah
that reminds me, I really need to get a VPS at some point
@slhck I vaguely recall a MSO question about multiple answers, where it was recommended that different solutions are split up rather than put into one answer. Then again, summary/collection answers seem to be encouraged at the same time, so...

@Bob That was my point… there's not even a single sentence here.

Bob
12:24 PM
@slhck Oh, you mean add another answer to sum up? I read that comment as deleting every answer and leave one massive summary one...

@Bob That's what I'd love him to do, but… although the question looks meh, dunno what to do about it.

Bob
lol
I'll clean up the URL list anyway :\
actually
I can't tell if this is cleaner or messier...
Well, it's cleaner but looks longer :P

Leave it like that.. better to click through. If one really wants that.

Bob
@slhck Wait, leave it in the pre-edit state?

@Bob No no.. post-edit

Bob
12:28 PM
oh, k

And obviously, the user got banned from posting more answers.

Bob
lol
well
four answers with over a hundred links within a few minutes
I'm not surprised

Indeed

AArgh some sucker keeps downvoting my questions !!

@HackToHell Hm. I count one downvote today, two yesterday. That's unfortunate, but not yet alarming.

12:41 PM
But i will look like a sucker, if all my questions stand at -1 ;p

lol
Well let us know if it continues

/me downvotes @HackToHell's question.

lol
all 3 ??

not yet ;p
but given that question downvote is free, I am thinking why not.

yay

thanks @jokerdino ;p
It technically supposed be 50 rep more but that rep got lost in the sands of time

oh?
@HackToHell how about now? :p

@jokerdino :) :)

:D
wait, did i get four upvotes on my answers or what?
thanks, I am guessing it was @HackToHell. But my reputation page looks weird.

1:01 PM
@IvoFlipse Yeah, I tend to forget Troggy, since our active times rarely overlapped.
@IvoFlipse I meant detached mostly regarding other people's reactions. Amazing amount of "zen" in this context.

Bob
@Gnoupi Troggy? All I know of him (her?) is one meta post :P
I'm too new to know any more
Actually, I'm not too sure who you are, sorry :(

gnoupi is one of the appointed mods who burnt himself out ;p
his hobby / obsession is spam hunting.

Bob
Yea, gathered that from this conversation :)

the rest you can hear from his mouth ;p

Bob
Ah... I'll be back in an hour.

@HackToHell i could vote your answers as a kind gesture; but that would get us suspended on voting fraud. so maybe next time ;p

itunes spammer

And he doesn't link directly to the product
But if you look closely
most of his lniks go to CopyTrans
2
A: How do I transfer my iPhone and iTunes application to another computer?

Ruslan IvanoffThere are two options that you can try: 1> Backup the full contents of your iTunes library to say an external Hard Drive. You can then restore your iTunes to a new computer. Backing up and restoring can be done automatically using third-party programs specifically designed for that - for example...

sophisticated spammers?

Well this one is more subtle
So I guess the first step would be a mail from the team
warning about links repeated like this, linking to the same product in the end
Since he did make the effort to at least provide some answers

yep

1:26 PM
@Gnoupi Gah. I hate those kinds of spam.

well, some of his answers are obvious
linking to "itunes-transfer-blablabla.blogspot.com"
these can be removed, they are obvious spam
but since he is actually showing a "human" side, and some answers, it should be handled with a mail
warning him to not advertise his product, as per the site's policy
but look at this one (to delete too), it's beautiful:
"this is what I found after a quick search

A: itunes: is there a way to add cover art to an album and not to each individual track?

Ruslan IvanoffI would advise you to look around on the Internet. There are lots of discussion threads on mac-fans' forums about adding iTunes artwork. This is what I found after a quick search for example: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?s=fad78bc37298a537a3d60f8ffc4ec18d&p=13351435#post13351...

and yes, it's a link to another forum saying that the solution is CopyTrans
nice, smart

o.O
O.o

;p
Cute, Its a mechanical turk!
(no offence to our turkish users, especially those unaware of the historical and modern day relevance of that choice of words)

@Gnoupi I'll go through their posts later and see what we can do :)

@slhck Yeah, it's the kind of case which requires a bit more attention than merging with deposit or deleting :] But I think indeed that most answers linking to copytrans can be removed

1:39 PM
@jokerdino there is no need for doing that stuff, i will get rep the hard way, I upvoted your answers cause I was bored ;p
@JourneymanGeek amazons ?

hmm, wondering if it's a dupe. One's SSD & other USB flash. THoughts, @Paul?

2:31 PM
@Sathya The answer to the SU original is about performance, but there is a wearing attribute to performance - however an SSD controller is a far different thing to a cheap flash drive controller. I wouldn't be surprised if a usb drive had no wear levelling capability - who really expects them to last. But really, I have no idea :)

I'll reopen then.

Cool
annotate-output rocks :D

@OliverSalzburg Only Debian though IIRC.

The script is easily available, but I get your point.

too many blue guys. ease out a bit?

@OliverSalzburg Didn't work when I tried it on RHEL...

@DanielBeck :(

2:55 PM
I have a RHEL compatible solution using awk on a server I'm working on, just can't access it right now.

<command> | awk '{ print strftime("%Y-%m-%d %H:%M:%S"), $0; }'
That's supposed to be just dandy

Can't try on OS X right now because strftime is specific to gawk...
But the answers in that topic are so disappointing...

@DanielBeck I'd really like to replicate the SO information on our site better than with just that comment :P

@OliverSalzburg Your answer was a good start, wasn't it?

@DanielBeck Yeah, but I wasn't sure if that is frowned upon. First noting that a similar question exists on another site, then replicate the information
Looks like a cheap rep-grab :P

3:04 PM
@OliverSalzburg Make it CW and you're good IMO.

@DanielBeck Good idea!

that's a whole lotta blue....

annotate-output?

All I wanted to do was look for answers that had high votes, but were link only (thus needing a little editing right?)
All I got was software rec answers:

Ted Percivalannotate, available via that link or as annotate-output in the Debian devscripts package. $ echo -e "a\nb\nc" > lines $ annotate-output cat lines 17:00:47 I: Started cat lines 17:00:47 O: a 17:00:47 O: b 17:00:47 O: c 17:00:47 I: Finished with exitcode 0

Rob
I like that
I will end up using that I'm sure.

@KronoS About the IT support question.. don't you think a historical lock will do for the time being? The other two were crap, really.
@DanielBeck brew install gawk?

@slhck ya that works for me.
I wasn't completely sure what to do on that one

4:02 PM
Me neither. Rather leave deletion to the community if it's not that clear I'd say.

@slhck ok. Posts like that should I flag and comment for locking?

Rob
?? There she was, just-a gawking down the street ??

D:< Don't strip my music notes, chat!

@KronoS I don't know how exactly we should deal with that… Like, for crap questions, just flag away. For those that one were on topic and somewhat useful, not sure if single-handed moderator deletion is the way to go. Or if locking just solves the problem. Maybe start a on meta :)

Q: Why upgrade to solid state hard drive on desktop computer

Tono NamWhy upgrade to a solid state hard drive on desktop computer if non-solid state hard drive speed = 6GB/s and solid state hard drive speed = 6GB/s Will I just be paying more to get less space? they both claim to have the same speed. I know SSD will use less power, make no sound and will be harder...

Wow. Just... wow.

@JourneymanGeek What was that backup software you mentioned?
( I didn't buy Acronis yet, because the support is beyond terrible. Words can't express them. )

I'm tempted to stop flagging
@Shiki i'm a personal fan of Crashplan

Ah no, I need an offline backup to an external drive. Preferably something that can take a backup while the PC is runing (Windows 7 OS)
Windows Backup seemed like just the right choice. But I tried it on three different installs with all kind of settings, and they all failed.
So I thought I should just go for Acronis, as I used their product before. It gets the job done, it works, and it's not overpriced. But Journeyman was telling me about a software that "one of us" codes... now if I could recall it's name...

@OliverSalzburg if you get one of those Korean monitors, I'd recommend ignoring the stand and either order a VESA stand with it or get one here locally. Might save you another 20-30$ which might keep the taxes lower too
@Shiki I think I know which he means
ninefingers on March 19, 2012

So I finally get to write my own entry for the Super User Blog! Very excited to be here. I’ve been asked to write specifically because I’ve just started working as a developer for Macrium Reflect, a disk imaging solution for Windows-based PCs and super user features a lot of backup questions. So here goes, an as-close-to-canonical tour of disk imaging as I can write. I’ve tried not to be overly technical here, whilst giving you the knowledge to understand the essentials; however, it gets technical from time to time. …

Ninefingers, the security mod works for Macrium

@IvoFlipse I actually haven't looked into any offers at all yet.
I was happy to finally finish up on my mail today after being afk for 48 hours :P

Well your choices are basically: do you like the housing? do you need built in audio (NO!)? do you trust the seller (go with the crowd)? is the price low enough? do you want more connections than a single DVI?
That's about it
I couldn't tell whether the tempered glass was good or not
Here's a review in German though only a 23 inch it seems
You can also pay to get it pixel perfect, before they ship it, but I'm not sure if its worth the extra cost and if it'll actually be perfect
On Jeff's blog post there's a nice overview too (from the comments): swiftworld.net/2012/04/14/…

11:40 PM
@IvoFlipse I didn't know that

> Very excited to be here. I’ve been asked to write specifically because I’ve just started working as a developer for Macrium Reflect,
Its at the top :P

@IvoFlipse as you can tell i haven't read that one :P
