@Shiki macrium reflect - its the one ivo linked

Thank you both of you!

@IvoFlipse: if its the non glass version you can always massage dead pixels

okay I'll buy a Reflect Professional license tomorrow
he should pay your tip (both of you) for that. :D
hope it will really work, otherwise my father snaps and will grab the dev's throat.

lol
satisfied user of their free version. Will likely get a paid version when i actually start having control of my home network ;p

(after he got mine ... but heck, Acronis got a real sh*t-tier support. if anything goes wrong, it's over.)

12:25 AM
this is why i test and retest backups

hi
any one know any apps that can play sound output from different apps out of different speakers?
i have a 5.1 channel sound card and sound output on the mobo

Virtual Audio Cable?
that is, if you configure it up
or if your sound card supports it

superuser.com/users/10165/journeyman-geek <- new profile sig , blame @Sathya for that ;p

@JourneymanGeek Windows XP

12:30 AM
ahh, then ya, i think VAC would work as @Shiki suggested

@Shiki my sound card is a sound blaster audigy 2 vs

VAC works with every hardware that can produce sound I guess
it's a digital (software) device, like an imaginary sound output
so you will have 3 "imaginary" sound outputs, for each cable. (green, pink, blue).
and you can choose these devices from any player software (winamp, foobar, whatever)

cool, im downloading it now to try it out
its for my custom arcade cab, wanna split the game output, then add a music player and output that from my stero

(wonder when will Rockradio start it's premium service. I love the channels but I miss the 320kbps goodness)
it will work. the previous version of the software is free if I remember correctly.

hmmm
any info on how to use vac?

12:38 AM
well, you need to use the "Virtual Audio Cable" folder from the start menu.
then just use the configure utility and add devices.
finally, you need to set your player apps to play audio to those devices.

12:50 AM
well, good night guys. Thanks again, ivo and Journeyman. The Macium is still more pricy. Like 15$ more pricy, with less features. I'll decide tomorrow.

@Shiki seem vac only allows me to send all output to multi spekaers, not split it by application

@Petah: hm, maybe ask it as a question on SU, but word it as a problem, rather than as a software request? ;p

Q: Play different applications out of different speakers

PetahI have made a custom arcade cabinet running MAME, Mala, Windows XP, and iTunes (but could get WinAMP or what ever). I also have a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS sound card (5.1 channel), as well as on board (mother board) sound. How would I make it play the MAME sound out of one set of speakers, and...

Bob
1:47 AM
@Petah If you have multiple (physical) output devices, VAC won't do anything for you.
VAC just adds virtual output devices you can route whichever way you want.
Ideally, one of your applications has an output selection menu...
Then the other can output from the default output device, and the one with the selection can output from the non-default.
That sentence is confusing...

2:03 AM
@Bob do you know of a music player that can select the output device
i tried itunes but no luck

OH
foobar?

hello

@Chris hello

lol, remember that vending machine I broke yesterday? I just saw the engineer come and open it up, take the 5 RMB out, look at the mechanism and frown (no fix I guess then), and walk away before I had a chance to ask for my money back

2:21 AM
@soandos you have any experience with minicom?

@Chris, sorry nope. I know what KVM switches are, but thats about it

ehh, i am trying to use it on my iphone to test simple echo statement but it isn't even printing the echo statement :-/

Q: Using minicom on the iPhone (yes I'm jailbroken)

ChrisAlright, I have been trying to get TTL serial communication working on the iPhone without much luck. I recently installed minicom on the jailbroken iPhone, and wanted to test the functionality of minicom. Right now I have two ssh sessions open and in one window I have # echo hi > /dev/tty.i...

wait, iphone questions are on topic?

where else would i post this topic?

@JourneymanGeek, don't think so
@Chris, We will ask a mod to move it to ask different
Please do not double post

2:25 AM
^ that

this is more of an OS question than iPhone question
using the program minicom

minicom is running on the phone...
what is minicom talking to?

itself
i am echoing "hi" to the serial port but it is not displaying "hi" in the minicom window

so is there a computer anywhere?

me?
yeah

2:37 AM
where?

im sitting in front of it

@Chris he means with regard to the problem

lol
yes!

yes i hook my computer to the iphone, thats how i ssh into my phone

and minicom is running on your phone talking to a serialport?
does the phone even have a serial port?

2:48 AM
sort of
its builtin to the dock connector pins 12/13
TX / RX

@Petah Windows Media Player, Foobar2000, VLC, etc... I assume iTunes has such an option, it's pretty standard in music players.

So, anyone know how to find a PUK number for a cell phone when the cell provider is closed till morning?

has no idea what a PUK number is, so not i ;p

I was going through the options on my phone, and apparently I can brick my SIM card if I enter the wrong code twice... Google found Yahoo Answers, who told me to check the SIM card, but the code isn't on there :(

Ya...
*not twice, 10 times

Bob
@Luke Well.. call your provider :P
I'm pretty sure there's no other way, since it should be unique to your SIM
so if your provider is closed, well... you'll probably have to wait
unless you happen to have some SIM reading device

6:27 AM
Not that I know of
I know I was able to root my phone and unlock the device to work with my carrier... But I don't knwo if such a thing exists to break past that point

6:46 AM
Weird... Although it's pretty much bricked (i.e. I can't access the phone itself), it's still getting email notifications pushed to it...

@JourneymanGeek PUK numbers are to be provided by carriers, afaik.

7:13 AM
hm, I really need to get my paws on the pro forma comments script

@JourneymanGeek How'd you measure the degree of deadness of something?

degree? no
manner?

Well, how dead is dead?
Loved that comment. It gets better the less context you have :-)

Is it a magic smoke escape ? Has a chip lost its will to live and blown up? Is it just minor data corruption (AKA only almost dead?)
actually
superuser.com/questions/454253/… cookie if you can work out why i flagged this ;p
@Sathya probably remembers Oliver from New Jersey.

@JourneymanGeek Flagged what? I deleted the spam.

I flagged it for deletion ;p

That's why I deleted it. I'm sure you had a stellar reason to flag.

@DanielBeck: One of my clients is a good example. She had a 'dead' drive, with NTFS corruption. Fixed. Now same drive has a broken USB port ;p
I told her no, cause i don't think i can solder a microusb port ;p
but to her the drive is still dead
or if it made wierd noises

@JourneymanGeek ah yes, him
@JourneymanGeek lolol

"Ooh, badge notification!"

@IvoFlipse: :/

Bob
"Oh, it's just Meta..."

@JourneymanGeek I'm not worried, doesn't Paypal/ebay screw him if he doesn't ship it?
Besides, I don't think it will be delivered today, so it won't be here before monday most likely

Bob
@IvoFlipse Didn't that guy reviewing have tracking issues?

@Bob No clue, but its a 3-5 day shipping, with a lot of satisfied customers

Bob
8:40 AM
> The buying experience was a little shaky at first. The listing promised a tracking number, but I didn't receive one, even though the eBay status of the item changed to "shipped." Then the monitor didn't arrive within the seller's stated delivery window, leaving me to sweat it out for a weekend before it showed up the following Monday in the hands of our local postman.

Lol, feels very similar, though I do have a tracking number
it just doesn't show up on DHL

Bob
hm
anyone know how I can tell if my video card is dual link DVI capable?
the specs don't mention it :\
The max resolution is listed as 2560x1600, so I guess it is, but it does have a HDMI out, so it might be referring to that? :|
I'm confused :P
bleh

@Bob Check the connection, it should have a ton of pins, no space in between
I need to buy a second GPU to power it, not sure what would be a nice choice

Bob
@IvoFlipse Can I trust that the port matches the card's capabilities? :\
It's a dual link port, but I'm not sure... :P

If you have the port, you should have the capability

Bob
8:47 AM
Had an older card that used a dual link port but only supported single link
gah
the online specs say yes. Stupid paper manual.

If you don't have it, upgrade :P

Bob
not time for a new monitor yet
just wanted to know, for future purposes :P
though that 27" one looks very nice
cya

Later :)
Mixing Nvidia and Ati was a bad idea right?

@Bob: what card?
@IvoFlipse: not really these days, windows 7 supposedly seems ok with it

Hmmm, else it might be tempting to get an Ati rather than a Nvidia

8:56 AM
@IvoFlipse: Waiting for toys is a pain ;p

but I think for now I'll just unplug one of my current screens and wait until after my vacation to buy more toys
Prices always go down somewhat :P
Just pray there won't be floods this year

I needed a new drive last year, when 1 tb suddenly costed as much as a 2 tb drive 3 months earlier :(

I wonder if giving somehow verified accounts for vendor tech support is a bad idea.. superuser.com/users/148638/manuelg-at-nvidia
@IvoFlipse: I hear you there
I miss being able to buy drives for 50 dollars

@JourneymanGeek Why would it be?

Well, more like, should i suggest it on meta ;p
makes it easier for legit officialish folk to be known

@JourneymanGeek I wish we could have those, but I think we already had this discussion on MSO

Q: Need feedback on company page idea

Michael PryorNOTE: This is purely an idea I had and in no way represents an intended feature we're going to add. I'm posting it to see if it could be shaped into something useful, get feedback, etc. I haven't even asked the rest of the company what they think yet, because I'm not even sure this idea would wo...

@JourneymanGeek didn't SO have something like that for google maps?

@soandos They have it for tags, not for people

@IvoFlipse I thought there were supposed to be google employees around
Or something like that

I think they argument was: they can say so on their profile, there's no need to highlight official employees, our users rock too or even more so

9:01 AM
ah, got it

They do, Android, Dart and Google App Engine use SO as their official support/FAQ platform
but @JourneymanGeek I fully support the idea, just fear the team doesn't
even though I feel like SO and SU are very different
Programming != fixing hardware
Or rather, SO usually has access to the code and/or can work around it. We have a black box that needs fixing

yup
and i also wonder if that should be a comment ;p

@JourneymanGeek What? His answer?

9:24 AM
@IvoFlipse The guy was useless, he just answered the canned answer "sorry about your trouble, please contact our support"
that's not an answer, that's merely a comment

@Gnoupi: Precisely.

I know, but just let me naively hope that he'll turn around and be awesome :P

posted a meta question on it ;p

Though probably he's on some Mexican helpdesk

he won't, he's probably not even allowed to give support outside
of their own structure
here, it's just "oh so sorry about your problem, we can take care of you"

9:25 AM
lol
@Gnoupi: Hence me wondering if there can be a more formal arrangement ;p

basic "nvidia cares, don't write bad things about it"

"You get these shiny badges saying these people are ACTUALLY from Nvidia, as long as you lot behave. In return, we'd like you to feed back what you can to the community, since these people are having around anyway"

@JourneymanGeek well it would be interesting to have actual support teams working with SU, for sure. A bit like GetSatisfaction, but free, in a way

but that's a higher topic that the great community managers and other CHAOtic people should wonder about

9:28 AM
@Gnoupi That's exactly my point, how do we get higher up the food chain, like they do on SO with Google and the likes

I am thinking if Ask Ubuntu can pull it off, SU should be able to.

@Gnoupi I told Jeff that 2 years ago, but they probably didn't think it important

well we told jeff (and others) a lot of stuff, and not really everything stuck

(I mean, we have made Ubuntu founder answer questions on the site early in the days)

and with jeff away from the team now, it feels even less accessible

9:30 AM
@Gnoupi Guess I should have said it more often

SU is particular
AU is easy, your site is already collaborating, and branded after the distro

is sleepy. Needs more coffee.

The problem we have, is that we don't focus on one vendor, so if you ask about hard drives, WD would have to compete with Seagate

SU is a melting pot for all kinds of software
exactly

@Gnoupi fair point. i agree the community is well knit around Ubuntu.

9:31 AM
imagine having several software representatives. You get a question about "how to do this?", and you have two products able to do it
both guys jumping to answer and advertise their solution

Though they can choose to ignore the fact that there's competition or embrace it, sadly not many have the confidence to do the latter

if done correctly, it can benefit people though.

probably, but at same time, we have strong policies against self advertising
so with this, you open the pandora's box, and wonder where you draw the line

@Gnoupi: Having an official account policy means you can draw the line though

hah, i can see it getting even messier.

9:33 AM
where do you draw the line on who gets an account, then?

if there is something like twitter verified profile or something, we can probably avoid spammers.

Give them more leeway when it comes to their own products (since thats all they will answer). Make sure they realise they shouldn't overtly self promote, and where possible they should answer with what actually happened
@Gnoupi: Contact chaos, and give them a list i guess, or 'official' e mail accounts from the company?

not the point. If we have an expert on "Superconverter iPad-iPhone-Coffee", who was worknig on the product
should he, or not, be allowed?

But obviously if you give away free hardware for the blog, you're allowed to spam a bit more ;P

Basically, if its actual people asking questions on Superconverter blah, there should be nothing stopping someone from going "I'm from superconverter inc , contact me.." as long as he comes back and posts "The problem due to a malfunctioning coffee widget"

9:37 AM
and what if "i need to convert my coffee in a sock, how can i do that?"

people already go "I'm from superconverter inc , contact me..", question is can we use this to convert them from that to posting answers

is the official guy allowed to answer? would be a mess to disallow him

In theory, he's just stick to part of the question. We shouldn't be asking multipart questions anyway

but anyway, not sure it's really a debate. Because besides this kind of intervention, I haven't noticed so far a lot of help from actual support guys

true -^

9:38 AM
Other than the macrium guy ;p
who is awesome
(this is why this is a debate rather than a feature request ;p)

The problem is not that they're not allowed, its that we want them to be encouraged to participate like real users, as in posting real answers, preferably in the boss's time

Also, i should not ask questions right before dinner.

@IvoFlipse - it can make sense on a PR point of view, you show that you care. But again, it has to escalate to take that kind of decision
it's not a simple decision from support team

well, it can happen if SU rules the world.

lol
Oh dear god.

9:47 AM
About chaos, they weren't here when i was active previously. What are they actually doing?

I had to ask someone "Have you turned it off and on"

@JourneymanGeek Yes?
@JourneymanGeek well it does work 90% of the time

@Gnoupi they promote the sites.
but i don't know if they are still functional.

@Gnoupi: friend of mine hasn't rebooted his computer in a month
complains its slow ;p

so those are the people behind the facebook page, the youtube videos and the twitter?

9:48 AM
The only one we see here is @aarthi

yeah

Well. that's money well spent

Aarthi is not chaos member anymore.

@Gnoupi Didn't you see what they did at Gaming?

I stopped following the fb page after getting tired of countless clueless "oh, look at this"

9:49 AM
Mostly they organize contests, which if you're lucky, drive a lot of content and visits

@IvoFlipse that's the skyrim effort

@IvoFlipse you mean apart from toss-money-that-way-for-more-contests?

That's Skyrim, Mass Effect 3 and Diablo

placing this site as a reference for skyrim
ok, in this case, obviously, it worked
but honestly, the rest I've seen so far, meh

Gaming is one of the poster childs of SE 2.0 which as already one of the larger ones before Skyrim

9:51 AM
the facebook/twitter is boring

the rest just didn't get this dramatic uptick

Oh, fishsticks, i can't find my laptop sleeve ;p

IIRC, the gaming twitter is NOT botted anymore?

and the worst is that they repost popular things without understanding them anyway, so the comments are silly

They also try to syndicate our content to the likes of Lifehacker, but the questions that do well there, don't do well here
@Gnoupi Amen :P

9:52 AM
the one that made me unsubscribe was about UX, where they exactly said the opposite of all the answers

and the youtube... well, i didn't pluck my eyes out
but it was close

@IvoFlipse: honestly? Lifehacker is perfect for the stuff we don't want here ;p

so i hope that there are indeed some "behind the scenes" efforts which are better than that

I think they're doing an OK job on scifi too, even though Jeff thinks all their content is "who cares"

9:57 AM
who cares anyway?

Hmm AskDifferent seems to be plugging away nicely too
Amazed Web Apps gets used that much
ELU is really strange

I think AU is doing a good job lately. Could be bias but we are attracting quite a bit of traffic over time.

We had a couple of 'hits', like Sharepoint and Drupal, though those didn't need love from CHAOS

@IvoFlipse Big surprise, given that they give away Apple stuff twice per year.

@DanielBeck We grew more, only giving stuff away once

10:00 AM
web apps gets traffic for older questions though. I don't see great content that much lately?

@jokerdino AU is going to overtake SF

Q: How do I delete my Facebook account?

Ivo FlipseI don't trust Facebook's new privacy settings and have decided to delete my account, but I can't find the kill switch. Does anyone know how I can delete my Facebook account?

first SE 2.0 question :P

@IvoFlipse we momentarily overtook gaming and SF when 12.04 was released. Then went back to pre-12.04 traffic.

@IvoFlipse hahaha, that is one gold question.

It seems the whole network picked up steam last year

10:02 AM
What site is this again?
AU got mentioned. in the installer in 11.10 and 12.04. That was quite a boost.
Actually, that was the one that hooked me up to the SE system. ;p

This one is AU, the above one is Apple
Yeah, the Ubuntu integration is awesome
all they need is a native app, that basically replaces the Help menu :P
Or at least makes questions pop up there
Interesting, AU gets used a lot more in the weekends
whereas SF does not
We got some Panda punishment last year
Wow SE grw over 4 times
We lose half our traffic on the weekends on the whole network

@IvoFlipse heh, we have a Unity lens that does something like that.

is it built in?

hmm i see so many pretty graphs.
naw, the lens is not installed by default.

It was me! :D
