@sidran32: if you want a low resource browser give qtweb a shot
also

any linux pros here?

pro, no
I know JUST enough to be dangerous ;p

@JourneymanGeek lol... well you probably know more than me
I'm trying to mount a software raid I just built but can't seem to get it going right
I get this error uknown filesystem type 'linux_raid_member

12:30 AM
urgh
I don't know anything about raid :/

@JourneymanGeek I don't. That old laptop was given away. :P

;p
I think i have a PIII 800 laptop somewhere around here...

@KronoS Ya, that error is beyond me, too.

dang

Hehe. @JourneymanGeek I will be going. It's getting close to time for me to leave work.
Just was popping in. :P
Bye

12:37 AM
apparently you need to expliclity state the FS type

> wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/md0....
this is so frustrating becuase they assume you're going to install the OS on the raid
but I don't want that.. I have a dedicated SSD for the main OS
they meaning about 80% of the tutorials out there

12:52 AM
hm, bad superblock would mean something is off ._.

ha ha!
I didn't partition the raid
:P

1:30 AM
lol

2:17 AM
@JourneymanGeek We are all fighting for the answer, huh? lol

Q: How to open a large file with an .tar.xz extension?

verveI got a 1GB file with an .tar.xz extension. Apparently, inside this single file is PDF files and ebooks. How do I open this type of file and read these files? Does ExtractNow work? Any simple tools? Windows 7 64-bit. IE 8.

lol
I posted first ;p

Yes you did. Synetech posted at the same time as me.

and i edited in 7zip after downloading the software i recommended, and reading the readme ;p

If only we could join our answers and all get reputation for it

lol
well
upvotes the other two answers
both of which covers things i didn't... which also means you both get rep ;p

2:32 AM
:D
Now with screenshots. I am waiting for Synetech to upload a GIF like he did last time to compete with me. :P

Q: Per-application audio control that works in Windows 7 64 Bit

PsycogeekOn Windows 7, I'm still looking for a per-application adjustment of the focused program audio playback with control capability. Preferably it should have keyboard shortcuts. List of things I've tried: NirCmd: shortcuts for it pop-up auto hide taskbar, and it did not work on 50% of the programs...

this one has EPIC screenshots

2:50 AM
COLORFUL

3:20 AM
@JourneymanGeek For me it has been a Epic pain in the butt :-) such a simple thing with so many little buggies . I would hand another 1/2 my rep out to the person who can control "system sounds" item seperately

3:39 AM
microsoft (win7) from XP , tossed out my toolbars , I had to toss out old hardware, which tossed out analog CD control. To get color changes i had to toss Aero :-( , they discontinued the large database of Gadgets , first time i even saw them work, and next few days gone from thier web . Changed the taskbar, biggest problem being 10 windows piled on top of eachother. Tosed out my "Top folder organised menu". forced in Full Line select in explorer.

They added some bug, that has thousands going crasy where a deleted or added file item doesnt refresh the file view. Add in some great UAC security that 1/2 the people turned off. Forced the install of everything, cross linking turns them "on or Off" at will.

lol
UAC isn't that bad on 7
its easier for linux users

it was worse on vista?

ya
Vista's UAC was specifically designed to annoy

3:48 AM
I really dont mind if the system would tell me "did you want to Install" , "did you want this Driver" , and "did you know this POS program is trying to copy itself in 500 places, and is sending your keystrokes out over the web" :-)

so far, all i got was , that all happens, without me :-) while it warns that i just pushed a mouse button.

up till xpsp2 there was a bit of software called winpooch that did that
it bitched at everything

@JourneymanGeek A 3rd party item, that is lesser known, is often not addressed by a virus.
good viruses have all the MS tricks worked out. if i can toss the ms tricks, and replace them with virtually unknown tricks, I might be able to confuse the viruses :-)

hey, anyone understand root here?

4:03 AM
@bambuntu Can you be more specific?

sure,

@bambuntu base part of plant , brings water and nutrients to plant, term used in computers to designate lower level things that can be the root or lower levels

I think I might be in the wrong area. sorry

@bambuntu root - for computers. yup, that's us

@bambuntu Not necessarily. Psycogeek is joking around

4:04 AM
oh really? I'm so serious.

Also, if you need a more specific audience, there is Unix.SE: unix.stackexchange.com

Is that a chatroom?

No, but they have their own chat!

well, could I run something past you?

I suppose so. I'm more familiar with Windows than Unix, however

I'm remastering Ubuntu as a live distro in order to run Firefox without beign connected to the user actuall hard drive. This protects viruses.

AH! Since you are using Ubuntu, we also have a specific site for that. :)

Oh, I thought this place was all Ubuntu

I actually got here via Ask Ubuntu thinking it was just a sub site.
Ok, thanks for the heads up

It's ok. Anyway, welcome to StackExchange @bambuntu!
@studiohack So, what's the deal with these News chat rooms popping up?
Saw them on a few other SE sites, too

4:19 AM
@iglvzx News Chat rooms?

 SuperNews

This room will collect technology news from various websites a...

oh... hmmm. never seen that before

It's because they were literally added within the last hour

@iglvzx let me get with my sources ;P

@studiohack lol. ok. It's just intriguing because there is no word on Meta.SO or Blog.SE

4:21 AM
@iglvzx Yeah, the first I've heard about it...
Okay, not a official SE thing - seems to be an independent user

Yeah. I just noticed. It looks like you can add RSS feeds to chat rooms.
Speaking of chat rooms, when I first joined Super User, I thought the room "Studiohack's computer" was a chat room hosted on your own personal server/computer

@iglvzx you can
@iglvzx hahahaha :) nope - just discussing my PC build

So, I guess mystery solved, Detective Studiohack

@iglvzx bows happy to be of service :) thank ye!

Haha

@Sathya @Psycogeek @JourneymanGeek Hello guys. If you could enlighten me please, interesting but when my router was set to WPA2 and AES, my HP laptop with Windows XP SP2 with SP3 updates could not connect to it telling me to make sure network is active (or something) and that it is within range.

Today i set router's encryption to WPA with TKIP and VOILA! It worked! I don't understand how Windows XP does not support WPA2 with AES. Any ideas?

seems more like your wireless chipset doesn't support WPA2
WinXP supports WPA2 +AES

^ that
after SP2
SP1 didn't iirc

Thanks guys!
@JourneymanGeek Ah you mean that SP1 did not support such encryption and SP2 can support?

@JourneymanGeek So the problem is not within wireless NIC but Service Pack? Or both?

6:39 AM
Its probably not windows
Its more likely the NIC as satya said

@JourneymanGeek But i have mixed SP2 and SP3
Oh
Yeah got it

no, if you installed SP3, you have SP3

Well the laptop is from 2006.
@JourneymanGeek I installed SP3 but it shows SP2
@JourneymanGeek I had SP2 and then after a few years updated to SP3

something obviously went wrong with the SP install

and it can.

6:41 AM
it should show the version you have

@Sathya Cheers!

@JourneymanGeek ah, thanks for clarifying

After messing with service packs and upgrades for XP, i gave up and finnaly purchaced a Xp disk with the updates. If your messing with putting on tons of hotfixes and service packs, doing it slower and in order of time can help

@Psycogeek Well.. @JourneymanGeek What :)

6:44 AM
I just use wsus offline updates

hey they were cheaper then too :-)

I vaguely recall the SP2 disk being free
or bundled with something rediculous like a pack of floppies..
oh, no, that was IE

@JourneymanGeek But who knows, maybe that update which is on your DVD now could have include bugs and online update could have newest version of that update.

@Borisyo: i just run the update script again. and store the updates on USB so i can refresh them

When i was putting on these crasy layers of hotfixes, i am going through the Drivers and Dlls , trying to figure out what occured. there are some things a person should never have to see

6:46 AM
Well this probably saves you gigabytes of bandwidth and time which is most important...

@Borisyo: it also means i can set a system to update overnight and get it updated

Where can i learn how to do this Offline Update?

@JourneymanGeek you are not running this everytime there is update, right?

naw
just for initial post first install patches, or if i am unsure if a system is up to date

6:52 AM
@JourneymanGeek Supposedly after new Windows setup?

ya
or in cases like yours

@JourneymanGeek I feel if i run this now, it will do more mess.

this downloads offline installers in bulk
and applies them
up to you

@Boris_yo make a image backup of the system first. if it all works , make a backup image of the system all "updated"
keep both to test between the one and the other , then you can report bugs for an OS that is discontinued :-)
Offline whole service pack install superuser.com/questions/347245/… For deployers , works better for users than the winders updater , when attempting to do to many at once.

@JourneymanGeek @Psycogeek Is there a way i can "Favorite" Superuser questions?

7:01 AM
@Boris_yo click on the star

@Sathya Thanks.

back in XP updating, many users would report a specific problem, then along comes "mister never had that problem, your all wrong" who has 50 computers all running perfect. Well mr perfect used deploying, not the windows updater.
we wont mention, that mr perfects computers were all the same also, with all the same hardware, and all the same limited software, and were locked down, and had nothing to do with everyone else :-)

@Psycogeek And that mister is Journeyman?

@Boris_yo no, ask him, but I think he has a wide and diverse knowhow
lets try this @JourneymanGeek Is windows a completly bug free operating system, that nothing ever goes wrong ?

7:47 AM
@Psycogeek: bug free operating systems don't exist
sure there's issues. And it can occationally be annoying. A lot of what i know is built around mitigating those annoyances

@JourneymanGeek That proves it, Journeyman geek has not been replaced by a stack exchange bot :-)

and i use offline updates primarily cause windows update borked an update to SP2 ;p
and i had to reinstall and waste a day waiting for patches to download and install

I am connecting through smartphone's tethered bluetooth dial-up connection to internet now. I can see i can set baud rate from 115K to 921K. How do i know which baud rate my smartphone's bluetooth is capable of?

bluetooth... dial-up?
brain breaks
Its not dialup i think

@JourneymanGeek It is Bluetooth DUN
PDANet is app that allows to do so.

8:05 AM
@Borisyo with old modems and older serial stuff, often I would just set it all the way up, then see how it worked, lower it as it fails (untill it works reliable), and any manuel setting of was to set it close to the max. usually negotiation speeds were adjusted by the programs , when it gets packet losses, and fails?

@Psycogeek use PING to test for packet loss?

@Boris_yo i only rely on ping when normal activity fails. I have tethered before, but only one style of teather, and only based on software that existed on the devices. they never even gave me any manuel controls

8:43 AM
@Psycogeek Whoah! Smartphone's CPU is at 78% usage because of a bluetooth tethering.

then it must be working :-)

@JourneymanGeek while it isn't dial up in the traditional sense of a modem dialing a number, you still do an ATDT*99***1# to call the number via the same mechanism you would with an old analog modem

When we had some tethering going, seeing if i could get rid of an ISP, the phone did sit there and cook (slang for, it was staying hot). That phone did not have Cpu use indicator.

ahh
eww
shows how little i know about phones, and how much i've forgotten about dialup ;)

@Borisyo I don't think any attention is paid to the baud rate when it isn't a real modem. I could be wrong though - are you seeing a speed issue?

9:10 AM
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_T220/T221_LCD_monitors this i learnt from SU today. Gaze upon its awesomeness, and dispair that you probably can't have one ;p

9:27 AM
@Sathya Are the times on the suggested edits list deliberately in UTC–08:00?

9:39 AM
@DanielBeck Do you have an idea if the Desktop in OS X can be easily replaced by a symlinked folder that actually exists in the Dropbox?

@JourneymanGeek I dont know what i would do if 8pt fonts were only 2mm tall

@DanielBeck the API sends epoch, I just do a epoch to time conversion per my server's timezone. Will correct that soon
@JourneymanGeek :o
> The IBM T220 and T221 are LCD monitors with a native resolution of 3840×2400 pixels (WQUXGA) on a screen with a diagonal of 22.2 inch (564 mm).

I should have known that "going against the grain" on this one superuser.com/questions/390947/… would get me shot full of holes
On one side, I have breeched the religious practice of the god of 7, and on the other side i discounted the existance of satan. I guess i am just luckey that i wasnt saying anything bad about an apple product

10:22 AM
Hm. Is it normal for Stack Overflow flags to be in the queue for 21hrs without being handled?

@slhck I tried it when I read your question. It worked with limited testing (i.e. making screenshots) just fine.
Don't know how e.g. AppleScript will like it though.

@DanielBeck So, setting it up via another user account?

@slhck What do you mean?

Can you just replace the Desktop while being logged in?
i.e. ln -s ~/Dropbox/Desktop ~/Desktop

@slhck I did it. Had to sudo mv the original desktop folder though, since there's an ACL.

10:27 AM
Ah, thought so.

Don't know how the periodic "I just recreate all of these useless folders like Movies, Music, etc." task will handle it.

Well, doesn't have to do with Desktop really

In earlier OS X versions, you were able to delete those, but they were recreated automatically. No idea what did that, and whether that's still the case despite ACLs.
I never tried deleting the Desktop folder before, so it might.

Well if you tried it feel free to add your two cents there

Q: How to sync OS X desktop to Dropbox?

user494461How can I sync all my Desktop files to Dropbox, so that my desktop still feels, looks and works like a normal Desktop?

Gotta do some grocery shopping, bbl

@Sathya Precisely ;p . It basically stomps anything currently made in terms of resolution and pixel density, and takes its lunch money

10:37 AM
@slhck For that my testing was too limited.

@Psycogeek BIGGER FONTS

@JourneymanGeek sure, just ask MS for a new set of DPI adjustments

and its a chicken or egg thing

@JourneymanGeek It has a fan. Seriously? A screen with a fan?

windows dosen't support it since its uncommon
@DanielBeck: Yes. Its insane
The only monitor that comes close to that kind of density is a 10MP monochrome LCD ;p

Posted by George Edison on February 17th, 2012

I have been using the Windows 8 Developer Preview for about 5 months or so and in order to install it on my PC, I had to create a rather small partition on my primary hard drive consisting of only about 16GB. Thankfully, a clean install of Windows 8 will fit comfortably within that space and still provide enough room for some basic utilities and drivers (of course, I do have other secondary partitions that I use for installing applications).

During the installation of a particular application, the free disk space on the partition dropped to about 28MB. One of the users over in the Root Access c …

4:08 PM
I have set baud rate to max but later discovered CPU usage on smartphone was almost 80%

Yet i am not sure if this is what resulted in slowdown and i will have to check this with default 115K baud rate.

5:05 PM
How do I summon Clippy?
cool

5:17 PM
@Clippy I like "What happens when OS X runs out of Disk Space" better, because it actively causes data loss. Nothing like a first-run experience for a highly customized application.

@DanielBeck Have you been there already?

@slhck Sure, you haven't?

@DanielBeck I run on 120GB HDDs just fine. I've never had less than 40GB available on any system I've ever been on.
External drives ftw

To prevent loss of data (hahahaha) the preferences property lists of running applications are periodically re-written to disk. What happens when said disk is full is that the writing fails. So once you restart such an application, instant first run experience.

So the plist is deleted before it's written

5:23 PM
@slhck Don't know. If I were at the machine at that time it wouldn't have filled up.
Stupid search engine indexes take up too much space :(

@DanielBeck: Forgot to include your name, I've responded.

I remember having first 1GB hard drive... Man i had to delete games to install other new games.

There are 0 characters left so I don't bother with trying to fit your name in there. I could opt for [at]dan perhaps, but a ping on chat suffices as well...

@TomWijsman It does.

I still have diskettes which i can sell for $$$ in next 20 years.

5:27 PM
any SU mods around?

@ThomasWard Do you need help? At least three 20k here atm

@Tom I still think the bad outweighs the good in your controlled approach. Besides, given the international audience, I don't think it'll be feasible to gather all users in chat or somewhere at the same time.

@ThomasWard yeah

@ThomasWard here!

5:29 PM
@DanielBeck About the 304: Not Modified, I still got that when doing Cmd-Shift-R. That's why I questioned the answer.

@Sathya @studiohack i'm concerned about a specific SE user who has been creating "News" chat rooms for more than one site. I noticed this initially in AskUbuntu, and have been discussing this with their mods, but he just today posted about creating an SU News chatroom

So it's not like I didn't check :P

i'd like your inputs on whether this is concerning... this "track record" suggests he may be creating chat rooms without cause or reason, just to do it

@slhck I didn't. Odd. What dite did you test it with?

well, anyone's free to create rooms & without activity, it gets culled @ThomasWard

5:30 PM
@TomWijsman yes, that. he also created one for Ubuntu News on AU

@TomWijsman Using Reddit for a "news" source is one of the most ridiculous ideas I have seen in a long time.

@Sathya One could argue that it won't die if news keeps being pulled in

@studiohack it will.

@DanielBeck Hm, I don't even have the force reload entry

5:31 PM
@Sathya okay, good to know

rooms require activity from at least 2 different people. Feeds are excluded

@slhck Press Shift. It shares an entry with reload.

@Sathya define "activity", i've seen users lurk in the room without doing anything, so...

jrg
@ThomasWard activity = messages posted

i see... so if even William just posts one message a day it remains active even if nobody else posts?

5:32 PM
@DanielBeck Hm, true, but I still get countless 304s.

@ThomasWard at least 1 message posted by 2 distinct users at least once every 15 days. Feeds don't count as regular user.

at which point you can see my concerns

@Sathya: In that room's feeds, this doesn't make sense, does it:

ah. two distinct users.

What Sathya said.

@ThomasWard So he'll have to register a second account?

Explicitly the http://feed:// and perhaps the &user=williamtdr part.

i agree with @Tom on this one

5:33 PM
@TomWijsman Wait, hes using it now for his reddit thing? Oh great.

@jrg so was i right to be concerned? :P

But well, as Daniel said, Reddit is probably not the best source to pull from.

actually that link redirects incorrectly

jrg
@ThomasWard Yes. I didn't mind with the AU one, i figured it would die soon enough, just like the other rooms that tried that and failed.

Rather add official companies blogs / real news sources rather than aggregated ones.

5:35 PM
rests his case

@DanielBeck Well, before I hosted a simple HTML site with a CSS that I changed, but it would always force refresh, which is awkward. Now I'm just on SU.

@slhck Well.. you're doing it wrong then. Cmd-Shift-R gets no 304's, only 200 and a single 204 No Content (the pixel).
Version is 17.0.963.56
And I'm not logged in to the site on Chrome.
My previous test case was heise.de, also without personalization.

@DanielBeck Hm, for me it doesn't :) But I'm on 19-something. So it's possible they broke it again.
@DanielBeck Same results for Heise. Lots of 304s.

@slhck And people wonder why I don't use Chrome. Previously I found a bug every time I started the program. Now I don't even need to start it myself anymore to find bugs.

5:40 PM
@DanielBeck Arguably, it's a feature I rarely use. But yeah. That's what you get for running the Dev version.

@TomWijsman thing is, the signal to noise ratio with feeds is very low ( -- thanks @DanielBeck corrected )
and anything particular that's interesting will be manually posted in here

@Sathya You mean low?

Yeah.

Anybody here has GPS implanted in shoulder?

@Boris_yo Sure, but it kinda interferes with the WiFi Repeater in my left kneecap.

What is all this privacy concerns trend in latest years?
I will let you answer.
I think my wireless NIC malfunctions. Don't know what could have caused that but i don't remember dropping laptop.

6:35 PM
rofl @ Paula asked us a simple question, “your name is Windows. Why are you a flag?”
2
@slhck: Was it you that posted the Google Chrome Keyboard Shortcuts thing? I was wondering how you use that when you currently have a text box focused...
For example, on Google it just adds the two characters to the search instead of going to the link when I type it and press enter.

If anyone feels like it, here is a link to my question:

Q: How to automatically move files to the network

WebnetI'm looking for an open source solution to a piece of Windows software that will monitor a folder on a Linux server via Samba and copy them to the local machine. I need this to run on a virtual machine and I need the VM to do the copying so my web server isn't exposed to the outside world. I've...

They might as well say free.
I hate it when people use open source and free synonymously.
Not all open source is free. And not all free is open source.

@surfasb Analogically
@surfasb Actually open source tend to be freemium. I mean all is free but not technical support.
@surfasb tend happen
Need to strikethrough word "tend"

6:57 PM
Free is a tricky word. :P
@surfasb Agree with that.

@Bibhas Free is a salesman's word.
@Bibhas Free is only cheese in mousetrap
@Bibhas Free is what everybody wants to be but it has a cost

@Boris_yo Relate that to the concept of Free Softwares

@Boris_yo what is this crap?????

@surfasb What are you referring to?

The three lines you wrote. It has nothing to do with what we are talking about.

7:05 PM
Yeah, after i saw link it has nothing to do.
I thought we are speaking in general.
Until this day i thought synonymously about these words.

In an economic sense, you are right. No free lunches.

This is what i was talking about. Did not know there is really a difference between open source and free.
I did not know free software can be modified just as open source software.
I am also a little suspicious about software/apps that can be modified by everyone.
What if someone has unscrupulous intent? Or only qualified only people are allowed to modify?

@TomWijsman Oh, yeah … well, it works only when not in a text box, obviously
wow, that question attracts a lot of spam

@slhck The thing is, starting to type if the text box is not in focus causes the textbox to be selected, at least at Google.

@TomWijsman Yeah, Google's a bit special with their instant thing though. Plus, Google already has keyboard navigation for search results.

@surfasb I always wonder whether they actually want to change the software when they ask for that.

Ah, good point. :)
