@Bob Nope. It was a regularly scheduled rep recalc CC: @r.tanner.f

hey, quick question: Do we have a question like "is a special partition for windows still useful?" ?

@klyonrad Sounds like it would be closed as not constructive

@OliverSalzburg Ahh. I guess I've never had enough posts floating around to be affected. xD

Q: Will you install software on the same partition as Windows system?

TimI was wondering if you always install software on the same partition as Windows 7 system? What kinds of software do you install on the same partition as Windows system? What kinds of software you install on another partition? If you install software on another partition, do you install them on ...

@OliverSalzburg yeah that's what I was asking
thanks a lot for the quick reply :)
so... this would be a typical topic for chat? :>

6:03 PM
@klyonrad We also have other questions that are similar: superuser.com/questions/82113/…

yeah, certainly, works for chat

@klyonrad Sure :)

almost nothing is off-topic for chat, unless it's something where nobody here knows about it, then you just won't get any replies

well then.... discuss!
I'm going to do a clean-install soon (hopefully this week)

@klyonrad I wasn't aware a special partition was useful in the first place =D
What was it for?

6:04 PM
well the original purpose was always

it basically comes down to: partitions add complexity, overhead, and a potential source of file not found errors; versus, partitions help save your stuff from badly behaved updates or whatever

that you can easily erase all the stuff on the windows partition and reinstall it
I had or have managed all sorts of standard windows folders
like "My documents", or Program Files

well, having your programs on a separate partition doesn't really help, because if you reinstall windows, most of the programs won't run properly unless you reinstall them anyway
having your user home folder on a separate partition might be useful

but some might have some weird setting in their old program folder
what I learned, changing the default Program Files folders (yeah, folder**s**!) broke all sorts of things
so I am currently leaning towards junctions

symlinks

6:08 PM
@allquixotic well, from one partition to another, so junctions

should one capitalize the name of a department? ie: This was Safety's scanner.

"I'm going to completely contradict the other answers posted so far, as I don't believe splitting data/apps/OS between different partitions is really beneficial.

If you have a good backup strategy (you do take backups don't you?), then there really is no need. Windows 7 (and the same applies to other versions of Windows, Mac OS X or Linux), provide you with a directory structure for user data which is perfectly suited to storing all your music, video, office docs, etc. By design it provides security (i.e. you can keep your data private from other users), but you can also share data between
however, I have one serious need for partitioning anyway, now that I think about it. My iTunes database has all it contents linked to E:\ and I don't want iTunes to organize the music file structure yet

@r.tanner.f yes
you might want to specify "This was the Safety Department's scanner"

6:25 PM
meh email is sent already xD
Though I did capitalize safety. Thanks.
Oh dear sweet Jesus the folks in accounting want the serial numbers off the pile of stuff we threw away last month. o_o That's going to take hours...

What the... you can multi-select tabs in Chrome...

@OliverSalzburg How?

@r.tanner.f Ctrl+Click and Shift+Click
There's also that
From that flag

@OliverSalzburg Oh wow, I was trying that out and just didn't notice the subtle change in appearance

Yeah, it's nice if you want to pull several tabs to a new window or a different screen
This one is really weird:
I recommend giving it a try :D
I was like "Hey, I thought that's already enabled?!"

6:31 PM
it makes my brain hurt to think of the code that must be behind something like multi-selecting tabs with different plugins running in them (flash, java, and silverlight with DRM, for instance), and drag them all over to a new window on a separate monitor running on a different GPU

oh wow, I've never even looked at chrome://flags

@r.tanner.f, another awesome one is chrome://gpu
8-)

nice!

@allquixotic in a good or in a bad way?
hmmm, SU could use a save for answering later feature...

@klyonrad you can star a question to add to your favs

6:38 PM
@Sathya not ideal, and not what my mind thinks when I star something ;)

true, just mentioning ;)

ohhh stacked tabs =D I likely

you can also write down the url to a question on a brick wall using a stone that is soft enough to be scratched by brick

@allquixotic What's this "writing" thing?

you can also memorize the url by using flash cards to memorize the bit.ly or something
one side of the flash card: the question summary; the other side: the url

6:40 PM
Hehehe

you can also print out the question in 72 pt font on 11"x17" paper and put them in a 3 ring binder and put tabs in to categorize them by tags
that would actually be a pretty awesome if someone did that and had their notebook to show off on youtube or something... minus the 72 pt font

@OliverSalzburg I see you ran into that :P

@OliverSalzburg Ohhh it spawns it immediately now... not sure I like that as much actually

their tab would be thick though

6:42 PM
bahaha stackprinter

@Sathya I was really hoping there would be a "Group selected tabs" feature

@OliverSalzburg also not really related to save-for-later but a cool site nonetheless :)

multi select, pin them :P
again not true FF grouping style..

@OliverSalzburg they should adopt the Android 4.0 homescreen meme of little "dimensional pockets" (they seriously look like a dimensional pocket from Baldur's Gate) to allow you to store multiple tabs within the same space

@klyonrad Well, how about getpocket.com

6:44 PM
@OliverSalzburg I was really, really considering investing in that project, but considering I don't have or use a run-in-the-mill printer I couldn't justify it.

Or something like that
@allquixotic You mean the folders concept?
@r.tanner.f It fell into the "cool but useless" category for me. And I've already invested in another project in that category :D

I have instapaper, read later (I refuse to call it pocket), bookmarks, browser tabs, etc. stop referring me to third-party solutions! ;)

@klyonrad Ok, ok :D

from what I feel, android users lean towards pocket, right?

@klyonrad Was the brick considered 3rd party? :P

6:47 PM
well throwing around multiple bricks would be a cool party.
Ba-Dum-TSH

@r.tanner.f not interesting enough to invest in with console2 already working so well for me
console2 solves the tab/window management/buffering/copy-paste problems completely, and also integrates with any console app, not just cmd.exe/powershell.exe

@allquixotic Agreed

only thing console2 doesn't do is tab completion and coloring, but i rarely use coloring, so i'm not willing to pay for software just for tab completion... if i want it that badly, there's something called Linux

haha

6:52 PM
besides, i do windows development on linux anyway... much easier to develop with autotools and compile with MinGW than to use visual studio and cmd.exe
even cygwin is a non-starter due to the slow fork bug (not really a bug so much as a design limitation) and the age of the packages

hmm, console2 is only 32bit? what the hell?!

@klyonrad There's also a 64bit version
I just downloaded it :D

WFM on both 32 and 64

@OliverSalzburg thanks for the link; I am stil trying to find the 64bit link myself. So that I have something to rant about

the page for that makes me grin all kinds of cool inside

7:00 PM
sourceforge sucks

@allquixotic nothing to see about ipv6 in the text ---> SUCKS ;)

@klyonrad why is ipv6 a requirement?

because ipv6 allows for better end-to-end connectivity if you want the networked lamp?

i don't have a home internet connection anyway, i take it with me (LTE phone)

7:05 PM
@allquixotic "An Internet Address for Every Light Bulb" (just for the headline nxp.com/news/press-releases/2011/05/… )

yeah yeah i know all about ipv6, but just............................................................................‌....... i don't see why you need to access it from the public internet anyway
if you aren't close enough to your Light to be able to connect it to a LAN that your device is on, you probably can't see the effects of tweaking it anyway
i just got a hilarious idea for how to use the Light

@allquixotic do tell

set up a Light on the exterior wall of every cube in a building, and go to a master controller webpage, type in a person's name, and the lights will light up in an animated pattern to direct you to the person you are trying to get to :D
2
with the final light blinking vibrantly

@allquixotic well d'uh; the software should show if the light is on or not and you could turn it off or on from far away
I need to find a way that I can do this at my university in 1-2 years :D
there are so many business usecases for this of course! ;)

YUP
"how do i get from class A to class B?" look it up on your phone
the webpage gives you a color and the lights start strobing your color in the direction you need to walk
and it can multiplex other peoples' routes at the same time
using a different color

7:15 PM
"This opens the door to ‘Illumination-as-a-service’. This makes the Light a fantastic status indicator: are my servers still running? Has my build failed? Look into the Light and you’ll have an answer."
this wording... brilliant
look into the light <3

yeah, the "illumination-as-a-service" thing made me laugh

it would be the perfect gift for mom & GF
only 5*3=15Watt O.O

7:52 PM

>_>
why....?

because its funny for the windows users

that's a pretty cool site
@MatthewWong lol... Chrome has entered full screen.
whoa... grabbed my old phone to get some pictures off it. so small. o_o

@r.tanner.f lol, i used my old phone for an even better purpose the other day
i needed to flash an image onto a micro SD card but had no micro SD card reader, so I stuck it in my old, rooted, non-networked Droid Razr Maxx and used android terminal to dd off the image after copying it onto the device's internal flash using USB
i could've used my current phone too but then i'd have to basically take it offline since you have to take out the SIM card to put in a microSD card on my new phone (design experts thought it'd be cool; don't ask me)

8:16 PM
now I get to worry that there's something nsfw in my phones pictures =S

Q: How to check Thinkpad's specs? Such as 3G support and other things?

hhhThis is my computer x220 I am selling it because I need Xcode for iOS development. My plan is to get Macbook Air and then virtualize the Debian to it. How can I find the specs about this machine? Does it have 3G -support? It has the IMEI -number at the bottom so my friend said that my laptop may ...

9:17 PM
so here I am wondering why Google Docs is telling me my browser's up to date when firefox's automatic updates are turned on...

@nhinkle The "none" channel? So troll...

@r.tanner.f yeah i have no idea how that happened. And I'm not really sure how to change it back.

@nhinkle snirk that's funny (the image)... can you post that as a question so I can get some rep? :D

@allquixotic I actually figured it out
//@line 2 "e:\builds\moz2_slave\rel-m-rel-w32-bld\build\browser\app\profile\channel-prefs.js"
pref("app.update.channel", "none");
brb restarting firefox

@nhinkle, also, you are currently subscribed to the none healthcare plan and will be billed $60/month by the government for this first-world health insurance coverage.

9:24 PM
@allquixotic har har

9:45 PM
@allquixotic I see somebody is excited for another round of Obama

@r.tanner.f Truthfully? I'm in for a round of Albert Bartlett. Anyone else can "go home and die" (George Dubya's words).
He's not running, but he should
Logic is just too powerful for most people to accept, even if they completely comprehend the mechanics of it
The implications of the logic are too hard for us to swallow

10:12 PM
Whoa! I asked a question! :D

Q: Are HDMI to VGA Adapters Really Device-Specific?

allquixoticThere are a lot of devices on the market right now (especially mobile devices) with a Micro-HDMI or Mini-HDMI port and no VGA or D-Sub output. Most manufacturers of said devices sell a cable that looks something like this: I have yet to find a cable like this that claims to work on a wide arra...

@allquixotic I will need to search so I can find a close as duplicate :)
no vga signals are send via HDMI
DB15/VGA plug is analog only
DVI can be several: it has optional analog ports (just VGA signal on a few pins) and other pins for digital.
DVI -> VGA only works with a 'cab;e' if you have a DVI version with analog signal
Else you will need an active converter
Some for display port (digital only) and HDMI (digital DVI+sound+optional encoding)
This active convertor for DHMI to analog needs power. If it needs to do a lot of work (read: high resolution and or refresh rate) then you will need an external PSU or [multiple] USB plug (at 500mWatt 5volt via USB per connector)

@Hennes Huh, what the hell is this then? motorola.com/us/consumers/VGA-TRAVEL-ADAPTER/…

it is an adaptor. If you open it it will contain active electronics

you mean a converter

For $50 it would be a very expensive cable. (and it is not, it is more than just cable and plugs)
nods

10:20 PM
so the big thick VGA end is doing more than just passing through signals, it's actually got a DAC?

nod
It it gets digital, and outputs analog.

oh okay... because I see that it does plug into the micro HDMI and also the USB... the USB is just for power though
I was surprised that it could do that conversion in such a small form factor :)

Apple sould a few display port 'cables'. (They called them cables. Ugh)
display port is also digital, so basically the same principle.

I've seen much smaller cables that literally have a VGA header on one end and an HDMI on the other end, and I know that does no conversion

A low resolution one without extra plugs. A full spec on with extra USB power

10:22 PM
I just thought for a moment that the graphics card itself on the phone was doing the conversion

Not unless it is a cable specific for one device.
In which case they can cheat

which would then make the answer to my question 'yes' ;/

Only for some.

oh well i'll stop by my local verizon store and try out the cable

So no, yes, maybe would answer it

10:23 PM
it'd be awesome to have an adapter that would let me give presentations right from my phone lol
with bluetooth mouse and keyboard which i have taken care of

Until you get an embarrassing text on your phone in the middle of said presentation =D

lol

.........
i hate you

airplane mode

10:25 PM
@Hennes Is it worth the risk? I know I derp often enough that one day I'd forget it. And then bam.
Or maybe I'm just paranoid

I think I would run out of battery power.
so phone+'cable'+power supply+keyboard+mouse and alaptop bag to carry it all

lol

Q: Cheapest hardware combination for standalone terminal

stwagnerWhat's the cheapest solution to build a standalone (so not just a vnc viewer, etc.) terminal? I'm thinking of something like a tablet (iPad, Google Nexus) but where no other app than the web GUI can be started. Requirements: Touchscreen WiFi Webbrowser + server (apache, nodejs, etc.) (for web...

Ipad and cheapest in the same sentence.

@Hennes So much win.

It is closed already or I could have suggested some old (and thus CHEAP) palm pilots

touchscreen is a requirement? that pretty much limits this to tablets... so basically what's the cheapest tablet I can get? ~_~

Well, I would say cheapest and supported (so legal jailbreak)
make it a smartphone
open OS, so the google thingy

11:32 PM
why is everyone making such a big effing deal about this? zomg, a windows installation doesn't take 0 bytes on your disk!

Indeed.
It takes 12.3GiB
Sorry, 12.4 for win7 SP1 and all updates
1GB was probably swap (tested on a 1GB vm)

@nhinkle Because we're all sheeple

I just care of a modern windows + basic apps fits on a small SSD
So fat it seems to fit fine. Even if you use a 30GB SSD

well you also can use an SD card
so it's really not a big deal

11:52 PM
@nhinkle Its /.

@allquixotic I think you may have been right - Just logged in to my computer for the first time in a few hours away, and, it didn't crash
must be screwed up external monitor + power save command... very strange
