Is there a reason that defragmenters don't place folders in contiguous areas on the disk?

They usually do place then in continious sectors.
Which usually is physically continious sectors on disc
Did you specifically means directory entries or files?

Directories

I see no reason why they would not. I never checked if they did on DOS (norton speeddisk) and windows newer gave much of an indication.
Modern windows defrag even seems to assume you only need to know XX% done :(

12:23 AM
I don't think they do (based on performance on a directory read)

I don't really know of anything that would do that
even wassname...

@JourneymanGeek why don't they do that?

jkdefrag (yes, its obsolete but I still run the old version)

Anyone know where I can find on Microsoft's sites, step by step instructions for migrating a Server 2003 R2 to Server 2012?

@soandos: beats me.

scratch that kessels.com/JkDefrag "7 = Optimize by sorting all files by name (folder + filename)."
@soandos: close enough?

That could get a lot of strange artifacts , and do a lot of extra moves

@soandos Perfect! I think... Reading through now, thanks

@soandos: checking if the new version would let you do that
its more 'flexible' but when I tried it, MASSIVELY bloated by comparison

what do you mean?

12:29 AM
@soandos: you can, for example, tell it to put all mp3 files in front of the drive
but it was really slow compared to jkdefrag (which has almost no options ;p)

Thats just silly

thats the example they gave ;p
but you could probably go "add directory 1 in section one, then add contents to section to, then add directory 2 to section 2..."
and so on

sigh why is this so hard

probably cause its micromanagement ;p

Im seeing rather macro effects though
and I can't imagine that it can ever cause harm
@JourneymanGeek look at how they say to do directory consolidation

12:44 AM
that actually makes sense
if it isn't a little messy

little?

I used to be vaguely british. I have a licence for understatement ;p

Q: How to set separate Home and Work network locations in Windows 8?

sidran32I use a laptop both at home and work. On my Windows 7 laptop, it let me specify the work network as Work and my home network as Home, and associated sharing settings and default printers accordingly. Now I am using a Windows 8 machine and I don't see the ability to separate Work and Home network...

12:59 AM
@JourneymanGeek yeah but it's been on reddit and twitter and stuff too

@nhinkle: there's a bit of a anti ms bias on /.
donno about reddit
twitter is twitter. Options are like... ;p

Howdy
Anyone with Windows 8 / OSX setup here?

Nope. :(

okay. thanks

1:13 AM
(actually I have neither set up right now, my hackintosh is down, as is my windows 8 install)

@JourneymanGeek I know /. is wallowing in anti-MS FUD, but still. Lots and lots of articles making a stink about this, not just there.

@nhinkle: Personally other than the (rather odd) decision to wall off 'desktop' apps, windows RT isn't actually a mobile OS, its a ARM 'varient' in the spirt of the old alpha and mips forks of windows
so the size isn't a big issue, and most people won't care

i agree

and I'd think a larger part of this is that its a way to rest/optimise windows on arm, since chances are there will be a windows-arm server build

now that would be interesting
intel would throw a fit

1:25 AM
@nhinkle: I actually see it being plausible - if you're running windows server, chances are you're running a mssql-asp-IIS stack
it gets more interesting with the sudden AMD-arm lovefest
/me does wonder if you could build a OS that would happily switch between two different processors, sort of like the big-little structure that iirc tegra uses, but with different systems.

Old powerPC like stuff? Granted same CPU, but with runtime switchable littleEndian/BigEndian

No one has ideas regarding my question, eh?
Also, whoever wanted me to give my review of this Sony VAIO Duo 11, I give it a 5/5. Would buy again. 😊
Also, I am actually touch-typing with the onscreen keyboard in Windows 8. I just tried this as an experiment... I am impressed that it works with touch-typing at all!
This is pretty cool!
I should totally put up a video online of me doing this.

Bob
@sidran32 IIRC they account for finger drift?
Or was that just the touch cover?

No, it's just as big as the hardware keyboard. You still have to make sure you don't move your fingers too far. :p
I did, a couple times, accidentally tap outside the keyboard, hiding it. And typos can happen, but without practice, I was able to type nearly as good as I can on a regular keyboard.
With practice, I expect it'd be even better. I find that impressive.
I don't know about the touch cover. I don't have a Surface.

Bob
6:38 AM
gah, can't find that article

It does have autocorrect so if you do make typos, it's pretty forgiving.
It's like typing on a smartphone, but with less mistakes.
And, bigger, obviously. :P
Of course, this thing has a hardware keyboard built-in to it, so I wouldn't be doing it that much, but it works in a pinch.
Ok, off to sleep. Goodnight!

William HilsumNo extra RAM needed, just enough hard drive space (or hard drives) to hold them all. There is no limit... using boot loaders and similar technologies, you can simplyfy the process - When I was a younger geek, I used to think it was cool having everything from Windows 3.1 to XP and a few flavors ...

ahh ;p
darn, I was running 4 at one point on a system
I'm obviously not that much older ;p

At some point I thought I should keep all my VMs always up-to-date and work ready

Bob
@OliverSalzburg how many is that? :P

@Bob Varies, but back then I required a minimum of 6 Linux VMs, XP, Vista, 7, WinServer...
Because, well, you gotta run both Server and Desktop of Ubuntu

Bob
I've got five I haven't touched since installing them, another three that were only used for a couple of months, and just one I'm currently using. And another four untouched on the laptop. And I wonder where my disk space is gone :P

@OliverSalzburg Can you reopen it:

@FasihKhatib lol, same problem here

@HackToHell power failures?

@FasihKhatib yes

@HackToHell Do u use UPS?

My computer has one(really small ~15 min max), rest of the house uses another one(bigger)

12:44 PM
@HackToHell so this UPS of yours is connected to the main inverter?

nope

It drains it out too soon

The UPS?
The UPS drains the main backup of your house?

yep

12:46 PM
ok.. My UPS takes up for only 2 seconds and then switches to the power supply from main backup

@FasihKhatib: much like the storied honey badger, I believe the SMPS shouldn't care.

@JourneymanGeek didn't get u. be a lil lucid please

THE HONEY BADGER DOSEN'T GIVE A SHIT ;p

honey badger is an animal that doesn't care

12:50 PM
The person answering said invertors produce a spike of up2 400V so how do I guard against the spike?
So I asked him if a UPS would do since it conditions the power

They do not spike man

er... I don't think an inverter thats not faulty would do that

he's talking about crappy inverters ;p

> Use a good quality, high power-rating spike-guard though - some of these inverters spike for as much as 400 Volts when the supply power comes back on
/ me wonders what causes that spike

12:52 PM
aka cover thine rear end

I have used this inverter of mine for the past 3 years and all the appliances are fine
What u said makes sense cause a spike that large = smoke in the house
@HackToHell you removed your message about appliances being damaged

for some reason i cannot fanthom

but what u said made sense. A spike that large will fry everything

@FasihKhatib hello dude :)

@avirk I am on friend's phone. I can chat via FB Messenger if you want

@TomWijsman hi :)

1:40 PM
@avirk: Hi, Google Chrome / Chromium doesn't let me visit Chat.SE :(

@TomWijsman its fine here.

has a bug that they've deferred till 25 for now.

Which version?

22-24
I think it's a bad combination of libraries.

@TomWijsman 22 here

1:42 PM
A Google Chrome or Chromium tab crashes because v8 crashes because the backing store gives back null, and null can't be converted into a string to be used by v8.
Something like that...

@TomWijsman could be, they have many bugs with new release's

Tried earliest versions of v8 and Google Chrome / Chromium and latest versions that I can obtain.

@TomWijsman hmmmm, that could be a good reason.

Eh well, normally it just crashes Google News and SE Chat. Other than that I can't go to the extensions page although I have a handy extension so I can disable / enable extensions from a button in the top right.

@TomWijsman so now chat through FF?

Deferred from 22 to 25.

he is very unresponsive to his queries :P

> A very good morning to you! It was a great pleasure to read your blog "http://superuser.com/. I believe the articles which I have on “Internet Service, Phone service, Cheapest Service, Technology” will certainly grab the attention of your visitors. Some guy sent me this.

@TomWijsman over mail?

1:46 PM
Yeah.

@TomWijsman so now what is your reply to him :P

Though the subjects are off-topic and the N.B. is probably the catch.
Have not replied yet, looking for feedback here. :D

@TomWijsman So you want a feedback from all of us or from Mods?

Well, first part is obviously that he can blog about topics on SU. As for the N.B., that's not for me to decide and I suppose that would be a no-go. :P

@TomWijsman :D

1:51 PM
Alrighty, Google Chrome's SE Chat tab managed to load somehow after switching browser again. Closes Firefox.
@avirk: Another problem is that he probably doesn't even have a SU account.

@TomWijsman congrats :)
@TomWijsman he mentioned it So, I am really eager to know whether you will be interested enough to accept the articles as guest posts.

I'll pretend that we have a review staff. ^^

@TomWijsman And iikc guest can't blog or they?
@TomWijsman how he got your E-mail address?

@TomWijsman you have put it in your profile :)

@JourneymanGeek what kind of job from them?
@JourneymanGeek ?

thats a secret

point is though, you can probably find out a fair bit about someone if you know what to look ;p
lol

Topics for the blog need to somewhat be in the scope of our site which can be seen at superuser.com/faq;
discussing ISPs, phone services or how cheap certain services and technology are are topics that don't fit well
on the Super User site and blog. Guests posts are always welcome, although I can't tell you whether
free-by-line exposure or a link to your blog is possible; you can try to contact a moderator for that.

Moderators can be found in chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/114/ask-a-super-user-moderator

@TomWijsman lol! same as I had to flirt with you due to your avatar

@TomWijsman: Imma gonna let you continue, but you probably look nothing like the lucious miss swift ;p

@TomWijsman technology are are topics are appear twice

Although The the in the the the the the the the is lost. might be a valid sentence. o_O

@JourneymanGeek that would be secret too, and you will not share it :P

@TomWijsman Oo
seems like a heart beat in Hindi dhdhdhdhdhdhdhdhdhd lol

@avirk: I have almost no personal information on my profile

@JourneymanGeek: Btw... Regarding the contest, I think it's no longer possible to obtain +15.

2:06 PM
@TomWijsman: why not?

The contest really started quite active, now it feels like dying. If you look through the post they even barely hit 8 and 10.

@TomWijsman: why else do you think I went for as much as I could early on

And well, my only chance was a post that was at 11 which is at 10 now; so no level 4 for me.

Well, +15 isn't so easily achieved :D

@TomWijsman why not? Ah I see you have not that yet.

2:07 PM
and got a few spares to account for stratergic downvoting

@TomWijsman There also seems to be some tactical downvoting

@OliverSalzburg you are right :D

@OliverSalzburg Exactly, need to wait for a good question or come up with one.

I play fair, then assume people won't
@OliverSalzburg: which isn't cricket :/

@OliverSalzburg Well, I think the problem with that is that most likely downvoting different people doesn't cause any correction or is less noticeable than downvoting the same person over and over.
It would also be pretty lame if people were kicked out of their level because some people go crazy the last day.

2:10 PM
@JourneymanGeek many times with me in contest :D

and those ;p
I don't think any of mine got closed

too early?

herro

2:15 PM
@TomWijsman which is your highest votes post in Contest?

Is there any bash wildcard that expands to "all subdirectories"?
Like chmod g+x * but it would only apply to directories

Bob
@JourneymanGeek you've made me suddenly paranoid

wouldn't -R do the trick for chmod?

@avirk Why?

Bob
I'm gonna go count my qualifying posts now

2:17 PM
@JourneymanGeek That's recursive

Bob
we also need to watch out for sudden close vote spam

In this case I could simply use g+X I guess...

@Bob: I hope not

@OliverSalzburg no such wildcard but you have to use find

but if the same people close a load of stuff, and they're obviously gaming the system its obvious

2:18 PM
@TomWijsman just asking may be you get some votes still by edit it :)

@allquixotic Oh well... Thanks :)

@TomWijsman just asking may be you get some votes still by edit it :)

@OliverSalzburg Only recursive subdirectories of the directories in the folder? /*/**

find combined with either a pipe or xargs or -exec should let you perform a recursive op on arbitrary criteria (just files, just directories, directories and files, files matching a wildcard in the name, files of a certain size, whatever)

@avirk It's actually a short question which I already bumped at a strategical moment.
No reason to edit it again, don't want to play it. But want to be secured in the level I am in though...

2:20 PM
@Bob you have qualified, now you don't need it :D
@TomWijsman link

@TomWijsman I already used g+X now :D

Bob
@avirk it's possible to drop

@Bob how?

@Bob Has anyone actually ever dropped just by a downvote?

@TomWijsman: I don't want to test ;p

2:22 PM
@TomWijsman I was very close to that, but somehow I am very far away form it now :)
@TomWijsman due to unupvote I was. And there was a profile who cleared the level 1 but his questions/post were close so his level 1 meter was showing up he has complete the level 1 but when i hover the mouse on it, message popup with o/o post.

and its hard to determine who will win when there is a draw system :P

Bob
@TomWijsman well, by closed yes
I dunno about downvotes o.O
urgh

@avirk the Community user (uid -1) might win part of the contest too :P

Bob
I need a couple more votes before I'm entirely happy :P

2:27 PM
lol

Bob
well, better get to improving/answering more

@allquixotic that would be a cheating :D

@avirk: actually community was nominated for the last contest

@TomWijsman you and me equals in age :P
@JourneymanGeek when? I didn't notice that.

@avirk: last year's anniversery contest
they ran differently, almost like an election
was quite lulzy

2:46 PM
@JourneymanGeek then it seems there is no way to win for me :(

@JourneymanGeek Oh what a surprise :D

@JourneymanGeek Hmm, if the Windows 8 contest is not anniversary... We'll have another one soon?! :P

Trying to drive some traffic to my post, Oliver suggested I drop in here. superuser.com/questions/497122/…

@corwin01 Came expecting upvote begging. Left pleasantly surprised.
oh didn't see the Oliver part though
