4:48 AM
morning

Bob
afternoon

night

apparently evening was missed :P

someone in the UK?

Bob
@soandos early morning there

4:55 AM
@Bob oops, went the wrong way. I meant alaska

Bob
:P

5:23 AM
@Sathya Guess who's back! superuser.com/questions/510569/…

@slhck oh jeez
man I don't think he's bothered about creating an account or not

Nah, I'm probably being way too optimistic about it.
> 25 user accounts have been merged into this user.

Bob
6:17 AM
@JourneymanGeek You like/use Macrium Reflect, right?

@Bob: ya. I use it on my XP boxen

Bob
I'm still trying to figure out what to use :P

XD
also, one of their devs is a SU user ;p

Bob
I just found out that if you try transferring Windows Backup to a different drive, it only keeps the most recent one. seriously?
@slhck think he'll finally get the message? :P
@JourneymanGeek Even better! :P
hm $45

oh, i've been using the free version
I basically just wanted periodic snapshots from scratch in case my main drive died

Bob
6:22 AM
unfortunately lacking differential/incremental

Bob
I'm relying on RAID keeping my data intact in case of physical failure

.. raid is not backup ;p

Bob
so backups are more of a whoops I formatted the wrong drive kind of thing :P

Bob
6:23 AM
@JourneymanGeek it's designed for physical redundancy, but it is good at that.

fun, someone I know is installing opensco server ;p

Bob
o.O

Bob
6:44 AM
eh, I'll give Acronis a shot

7:08 AM
I'm not sure in which alternate reality this is a good idea

Bob
@JourneymanGeek For $55?!

Bob
Heck, I could search a dictionary for free, and it won't start impersonating/accusing me!
Seriously, though, why would anyone buy a dictionary app for $55? :S
I actually can't think of anything that could be worth that much (phone apps)

lol
yeah
and have that accuse you of stealing over twitter
hmm
at some point I need to decide if I want to keep this install of windows 7 or not
and how to

Bob
lol

7:15 AM
/me is getting his new comp soon

Bob
I generally like a fresh OS install to go with a new computer
if only to minimise driver issues

let me rephrase that
I will be doing a fresh install on the new computer
I need to decide if I want to use the drive that's on this computer as a storage drive for the new computer, leave this computer as is on a new case, or something else

Bob
ah
well, drives and storage space are hardly expensive
wut
Good day,

We wates construction group learn from our agent that your company deal on crane’s, and we are interested to so please fill us with the necessary information about the specific type zipped and attached to this mail and provide us with the

 1. price,

2.shipment cost, and

3.first deposit percentage and payment mode.

Thank you

Paul .ExCo

Bob
the subject was weird enough: we are interested in your crane

7:23 AM
old, scrapperish mentality. HATE to use things less than efficently

Bob
and a nice attachment: crane_photo.7z, 3.9kB
anyone got a honeypot set up?
@JourneymanGeek I meant, the existing data (and OS) may be worth more than a new hard drive
especially if it's not particularly big
if you take it out, your old computer would be lacking a HDD, wouldn't it?

@Bob: the system is a backup. Its pretty crap actually so there's nothing i care much on it
Well, I have another, smaller, older drive
and this is the dumpster system, which I am moving off the nice case into a spare case, grabbing a old PSU I had lying around....
basically its the PC equivilent of the car up on blocks for spares
I could in theory dump anything i don't need now, delete surplus OSes and image it into a nice neat image in case I need it

3 hours later…
10:41 AM
@OliverSalzburg still no news :(

Bob
11:17 AM
...seriously?
I have 1119 of those folders. Great.

DELETE * 1119 :P
It can't be as bad as having to go through all your measurements to check if 1 or 2 pixels are labeled incorrectly...

Bob
Firefox: 40 MB
Chrome: keeps a 100 MB 7zip file for ever version that has ever been installed on the system
in the user profile.
come on

@Bob I don't know why they keep the old version
A: I have my profiled synced, if they bork it, just pull my synced data
B: Clean up your goddamn trash already

Bob
@IvoFlipse nothing to do with the profile
this is the actual application

So why keep the old version?

Bob
11:27 AM
no clue
it's a real pain when trying to back up my user profile though

6
A: Stop Google Chrome hoarding previous update versions?

SathyaThere's a nifty tool called OldChromeRemover, which removes older versions of Chrome. OldChromeRemover is a simple console program that checks for any redundant versions of Google Chrome left behind by the updater. It will quickly remove all except the newest version when prompted by the user...

:P

Make it a blog post, that also explains the scheduler bit :P

Bob
@Sathya that.. is a painful hack...

@IvoFlipse sounds good, will write

Bob
eh, I'll probably set it in the pre-backup script

11:32 AM
Meanwhile, hurray! It deleted one old version :)
I seem to have lost my Picasa database when upgrading, now that's a pain :(

12:09 PM
java does that too
and there's an application for removing that
... maintained by the same folk
go fig

12:23 PM
I just remembered why I uninstalled Adobe Acrobat...

it sucks? ;p
/me is a fan of pdf exchange viewer, in spite of its attempts to install the ask toolbar

This is for Acrobat, not Viewer
Not that it would be irreplaceable :P

ahh
my bad ;p

I'd say I'd never install Adobe Viewer...
But one of our clients might want to put 3D PDFs on their site...
It will be a dark day when I have to implement that
@IvoFlipse On the Nexus4?

... 3d PDFs?
ahh, the website OF THE DEVIL

12:31 PM
@JourneymanGeek Right. But I was asked for an alternative suggestion and was unable to provide one
But, of course, it doesn't run on IE
Which will not work for an industry website
And most people in that industry have Adobe Reader, because they don't know better
And that is where Adobe get's their cake
You use what everyone can play, even if the solution is horrible

I guess ;p
3d is just the next big fad ._.
The 70s called, they want their funny glasses back
2

@OliverSalzburg yeah

@IvoFlipse The 10 hasn't arrived yet either
@JourneymanGeek Well, they sell engineered components (don't know how to describe it better). Other engineers come to their website to pick out parts. I guess, 3D presentation of the data makes sense.

12:49 PM
No news on the shipping either I presume, given they said 2-3 weeks

1:04 PM
@OliverSalzburg: ugh, don't confuse me with the facts ;p

@IvoFlipse Nothing yet.

no problem, just hard to be patient :P

@IvoFlipse I bet :D

Especially since I'm really starting to dislike the iPad

@IvoFlipse You can't say that in a public chatroom, what if Apple find out?! :o
Hi all ;)

1:06 PM
@HaydnWVN Cheers!

They'll stop taking my money?
I wasn't planning on getting a job at Apple

@OliverSalzburg MS Windows ;)

they will send their crack team of turtlenecked clone assassins ;p

@HaydnWVN Good point. :D But I like Windows ;)

1:21 PM
Anyone here a c++ person?

Probably not better than you :P

I wish everyone were better than me :p

I wouldn't, it would be a pain in the ass getting anything done ;p

1:34 PM

Tempting @OliverSalzburg: ebay.nl/itm/…

@IvoFlipse That's so sad :P

@OliverSalzburg How so?
The biggest downside is the import tax
400 euro is the retail price in Europe anyway

The whole "I buy a new gadget and resell it to tech junkies on eBay" part

@OliverSalzburg: there's a whole industry doing that here

1:45 PM
@JourneymanGeek That's a very valid point :D

they tend to sell $shiny_unavailable_gadget at huge markup

@OliverSalzburg like Ben Brocka, though he did it by accident I think

I like a nice, new gadget as much as the next guy. But everything in the direction of pitching a tent in front of an Apple store, really gives me a bad mood :P

@OliverSalzburg I was initially planning on buying a Chinese phone, but the price difference makes it less interesting compared to the Nexus 4
Worse, the decent Chinese phones aren't generally available yet either
Also, MIUI looks like iOS, which I absolutely dread

Paying for quality is fine. I guess what I dislike is that I feel like there is a general drive to own the latest revision of a certain gadget. And, the sooner, the better!

Bob
1:50 PM
@JourneymanGeek they fixed it at some point, I think?
I hope*

@OliverSalzburg You clearly don't have a GF who needs a new phone ;)

not as far as I know ;p

Bob
I don't understand why programs developed/maintained by large companies can't implement clean updates..
It can't be that hard, can it?

@IvoFlipse Present parties excluded, obviously :D

;p
Apparently so
@IvoFlipse: there's a difference between "I need every shiny phone" and "I need a shinier phone, cause mine is old" ;p
or broken

1:52 PM
@OliverSalzburg I'm giving her my GNexus, so not really a party gift, just a great excuse to upgrade

or in my case, I had to get a new line, and I might as well get a new phone

Bob
@OliverSalzburg Not in a PDF, normally. There's a few shopping sites that let you rotate an object (I think they use Flash, though HTML5/JS or even Unity3D would do the job).

/me loves the One V, even if its stuck on android 4.0

@Bob As I said, I proposed github.com/tbuser/thingiview.js
Flash is just as bad as 3D PDF IMHO
And Unity3D doesn't help because most people don't have that installed

Bob
@OliverSalzburg probably easier to use
I'm not even sure how 3D PDF works...

1:54 PM
@Bob It's trivial.
"They" can simply export it from their CAD applications, embedding is a one-liner
All the controls are in the Adobe Viewer
It's one of those things that noone uses, but it introduces the security holes they constantly have to fix :D

Having everything natively in the browser sure would be nice

Shocking that IE is the show-stopper :P

Bob
@OliverSalzburg Chrome Frame?

@Bob Also has to be installed, right?

Bob
ActiveX control or something. But yea, has to be 'installed'.
@OliverSalzburg Anything to get WebGL support in IE would help, but they all have to be installed :\
huh
this could work: nihilogic.dk/labs/canvas3d
seems to work in IE9

2:14 PM
@Bob Interesting. I'll check that out later. Thanks

Bob
might not be worth your trouble though, since you'd have to convert output from whatever program they use

mew

Bob
...what the hell is appropriate onomatopoeia for a fox?

woof?

I was wondering what I could use to draw my measurements if I made a web app, any suggestions for animating a 3D matrix, 2D frame by 2D frame?

Bob
@jokerdino wow-wow-wow? o.O

wowowow

What sound does a jokerdino make? Does it laugh?

very similar to a hyena

is imgur down for you folks as well?

2:27 PM
nope

it's up

I think japanese foxen kon

@jokerdino I've seen that, shows as up. wanted to know who else is affected

2:42 PM
must be a localized thing, it's up for me

Bob
Their CDN had load issues for me last night. Last night being about 24 hours ago.
In other words, it was up as far as ping tests go, but I got a CloudFlare error page.

Hm okay
and I can't even see that image I just uploaded :/

IE ?
That broken image image looks weird

browser is irrelevent
was captured using chrome tho

^^ that's why I asked

2:50 PM
like I said, imgur is down here

err, you did not get what I said, nvm

@HackToHell yeah I got it late

i.imm.io O_o

2:57 PM
@Sathya it's actually unrelated to the conversation ;p

@jokerdino yeah, the extension provides the option to upload to few other services

right. better than photobucket

or imageshack
scumbags

Bob
@Sathya Which extension?

lol

Bob
3:02 PM
@Sathya you haven't created your own image hosting service yet? :P

Bob
ah
well, I know what my next project needs to be
create a working imgur plugin for snagit :\
the existing one is half broken
and of course it just has to use COM..

@Sathya Airtel might have blocked it :P

@Bob Foxes howl is more like a scream, very much like a high pitched goose

3:11 PM
@HackToHell not on Airtel

@Sathya omg imagesHACKuploader
Sathya is HACKING YOU!

@Bob > snagit
Sna GIT? as in, uses git? :D

bah, bs
someone tell me what IP imgur resolves to?

Bob
@allquixotic No, unfortunately.

screw it, name resolution is fine :/

Bob
3:14 PM
@Sathya 108.162.205.103

it resolves to the same IP here

Q: What easy-to-use GUI tools exist to reduce the size of HD videos?

good boyI have a few HD videos which are very large in size a ten minute video goes to almost 250 MB my storage space is almost depleted I wanted to reduce the disk space they take by making them low resolution or other ways I need some good tools for that GUI tool preferred

tbh, I've never bothered learning CLI media manipulation tools

Bethany Marzewski on November 26, 2012

Guten Tag, Berlin!

It’s our last party of the year, and this time, we’re heading to Germany to meet and mingle with the Stack Overflow community! As you may have noticed, we’ve been tearing up Denver this year with our opening reception of our new office and then again during Denver Startup Week last month. So we thought it was about time to bring the party to Europe.

If you’re in or around Berlin on Dec. 5 (or just want to book a last-minute trip), come clink glasses with us at Betahaus (Prinzessinnenstraße 19-20) from 5:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. While there, we’ll also be launching our first official translation of Careers 2.0 for German candidates and employers. …

That image is going places ;D

I've developed two Rhythmbox plugins making heavy use of Gstreamer, so, since it's trivial to construct a gstreamer pipeline and run it from the command line if you know what elements and properties to pass, it's easier for me to wire up a gst pipeline than click through a GUI

4:43 PM
@Blogbot Berlin? That's in Germany!

Guys help
i think i'm getting old

@OliverSalzburg It is?! I thought it was the location of a doughnut shop ;) Ich bin ein berliner means I am a jelly donut... it's the favorite sentence of German Dunkin Donuts ;D

@allquixotic :D

i only just noticed the 'review' button at the top today after well over a year of using SU?

@HaydnWVN You are
@HaydnWVN Ouch

4:45 PM
@HaydnWVN it didn't exist when you first signed up... it ninja appeared once you got enough rep

@allquixotic Ahhhh might explain it... 2k rep?

at least you aren't Jon Skeet. his profile was created with full trust when he signed up, and he didn't notice that he could ban people (including Atwood) until well after his profile was 2.3 milliseconds old... which is an eternity in Skeet Time

@allquixotic lol!

waiting a whole 2.3 milliseconds to use his mod powers is the equivalent of me not noticing my review queue for 160 years
lol @ Samsung Kies

@IvoFlipse You coming to Berlin? ;D

4:48 PM
soon, MMOs with a loading screen and funny messages above them are going to have things like "Creating duplicate monsters..."
"Creating duplicate Xs" is the next geek meme
trending (tm)

that reminds me of a bug in Everquest where this one gnome magician in Crushbone Keep kept creating an infinite number of copies of his earth elemental pet, every time the spell recharged, and the old ones didn't get reclaimed
i had a screenshot (before my HDD got nuked) of that guy and about 500 earth elementals occupying the same space at the same time attacking and insta-killing me
then some high level wizard came and used a PBAoE spell to kill all the elementals in one attack :D
he'd have leveled up twice if they weren't gray con
@OliverSalzburg I wish I could come to Germany :(
they probably wouldn't let me

@allquixotic I hope I'll be able to attend
It's on Wednesday Oo

I have travel restrictions :)

@allquixotic lol, what did you do? :D

4:54 PM
I'm a patriot, what can I say
it's not the German side that'd have a problem
the domestic side :P

Did you come up with some crazy encryption scheme?

I'll let your imagination run wild

if I ever did come up with an encryption scheme, it would probably be quite "crazy" (and ineffective), judging by my handle
quixotic = crazy, hairbrained

Chrome says "Exceedingly idealistic; unrealistic and impractical"

exactly :D
that's me to a T

Bob
Does anyone have @KronoS's app installed?
try the sandbox question, see if it crashes :P

@Bob I don't run Win8

LOLs! Just wiped and reinstalled a WinXP machine, used my WSUS offline update tool to deploy WU's, connected to Windows Update and downloaded the remaining 18. Now (after a reboot & browser choice) it reports 'Great Choice! You have the latest version of Internet Explorer for Windows 8.' (Note: This is IE 8 on XP!) :D

How do I recursively copy a files of type *.deb to a folder
in linux

hometime cya o/

@HackToHell Probably something like find -R -name *.deb -exec cp {} folder
...or something completely different

@OliverSalzburg that does not work :/

@HackToHell I'm not surprised :D

Q: Linux: Recursively copy file by file extension, preserving directory structure

unclaimedbaggageAt the Linux command line, I'd like to copy a (very large) set of .txt files from one directory (and its subdirectories) to another. I need the directory structure to stay intact, and I need to ignore files except those ending in .txt. Any suggestions appreciated.

gowtham@gowtham-hacktohell:/media/PENDRIVE/pool/main$ sudo find /media/PENDRIVE/pool/main -name '*.deb' -type f -exec cp -t /var/cache/apt/archives {}+
find: missing argument to `-exec'
o0

Put it in ''
sudo find /media/PENDRIVE/pool/main -name '*.deb' -type f -exec 'cp -t /var/cache/apt/archives {}+'
Something like that
I'm just guessing wildly btw

find . -type f -name *.bak -exec cp -t /tmp/ {} +
Works great for me
Maybe the space between {} + is the key
