@allquixotic When exporting from Excel, line breaks within a cell are represented as a single LF.
@allquixotic s/newline/linefeed/g
So if the HTML file (I guess you guys are talking about that, can't be bothered to read the whole history) contains a LF, it's probable that Excel is interpreting that as a (soft) line break.
Though when copying from the cell via clipboard on Windows, those line breaks are transformed into CR + LF...
(hi @Zach)

@Bob pseudocode: IF [ cell data contains a newline or tab character ]; THEN [ add a quotation mark at the start and end of the cell value and add an extra quotation mark next to each quotation mark already in the cell value, when copying the data to the clipboard ].
We experimentally determined it to be not only newlines but tabs, too.
His input data didn't even have any carriage returns or newlines (in any combination).

@TomWijsman: they're becoming apple ;p
before you know it, they will be own-branding hardware and sueing people
(I keed i keed)

Bob
@allquixotic ...Excel.

1:04 AM
@Bob Bob! Don't cuss in here! Naughty!

@Bob flags it
;p
(actually no, I feel the flag system on chat is broken anyhow)

1:59 AM
They DO realise if someone's unhappy with a free course, they can probably get their money back, right?

@JourneymanGeek Not true. My time is worth money (my employer proves that) so time I spent on the course should be paid back to me on an hourly basis for what I'm worth :D

2:23 AM
Good morning guys :)

@avirk virk

@allquixotic first time ever some one call my short name :P

it's not hard to imagine the 'a' out
heheheehehehehhehehhehehehhehehheehhehhehehehehhe i was playing around with google translate and discovered the translation for "behold the pancakes" in Spanish :D
i was conjugating the plural familiar imperative forms of verbs with "the pancakes" on the end

@allquixotic great

2:27 AM
and i thought it'd be "see", but no... behold!

@allquixoticso How Google pronounce my name?
:P

idk
in Spanish it'd be "ah VEER k"
in English it'd be "uh VER kh"

@allquixotic hahahahahahaha
@allquixotic lol they think "a" is silent :P

not silent, just kind of a cross of "A" (like the letter sounds) and "E"
many words that start with "a" followed by a consonant, we say "uh" for the "a" because we're too lazy to say "A" like "eigh"
it takes more mouth opening to say "eigh" than "uh"

@allquixotic Oo
thats why my mouth is too big now :P
@allquixotic do you have android device/

2:33 AM
yes, two
ICS and Jelly Bean

Are they rooted/

one is

I want to know is it possible to increase the default ringtone volume after rooting/

what do you mean the "default"?
when does this default get set?

@allquixotic hard to define for me but I'll try
as my phone rings on full volume say set on 7 but its very low volume when I'm in traffic and the phone is my pocket and no vibration to save battery.

2:37 AM
are you trying to increase the volume past the maximum that's normally allowed?

@allquixotic yeah!

that's not really possible, since the maximum volume is usually determined by the hardware and calibrated in the device as the value "0 dB" which means that there is no "attenuation" (lower volumes have a negative dB value to indicate that the signal is attenuated, i.e. softer)
what you can do is create a sound file (or download one) that has higher amplitude, up to the maximum, since many ringtones don't max out the amplitude all the time
look up terms like "really loud sound file" or something
or "siren"

@allquixotic can you find one for me?

'this one goes up to 11'
how would turning off vibration save battery?
You arn't using it unless you get a call

vibration uses extremely little battery, even if it's constantly on :P

2:42 AM
@JourneymanGeek that's in the phone guide :P

it's not how it sounds

lol
I REALLY want a good clean clip of a steam whistle

=-0987654321`qwertyuiop[]\ASDFGHJKL;'ZXCVBNM,./

@allquixotic I read somewhere command to increase the 'db'

you can't increase the dB, past 0 dB, without hacking the DAC, but that can break the speakers

2:45 AM
@allquixotic Oo

Bob
@allquixotic Depends on the phone. I remember there was some EU regulation on the max volume, so Nokia N8 firmware for European countries had a lower cap on the max volume than other firmware flashed to the same phone.

3:46 AM
hmm
anyone want a copy of fallout from good ol games?

4:31 AM
Does anyone use Revo Uninstaller? Do you like it? How does it work?

4:56 AM
@JourneymanGeek hey, i have retag privileges :)

@jokerdino: I know ;p
hmm WRT the windows 8 contest - is the criteria one of the two conditions listed or both?

Bob
@Ricket I've used it before... don't install/uninstall much, so not much use for it.
From what I understand, there's two main modes of uninstallation - 'forced' and 'tracked' (pro version only)
In addition to the uninstaller that comes with the program, the 'forced' mode looks for any references in the registry (and possibly some other folders?) by product/company name from the uninstaller metadata and removes them (potentially dangerous, but a backup is made just in case)
Some people have had issues where, e.g., they remove 'Microsoft' products such as Visual Studio and shared registry keys critical to other MS products like Office were also removed

Ah okay... That doesn't sound all too bad of an idea. I don't think it'll make much of a difference to me though so I'll not use it
yeah I remember that with old versions of windows, setup programs used to ask about removing shared files

@JourneymanGeek and sorry. your answer went to CW mode o.O

Bob
Tracked mode looks for any changes made during installation and logs them, then you can (selectively) undo them.

5:05 AM
o0
which answer?
oh, on the keyboards?

the one i edited. yeah, the keyboards one.

Bob
Tracked mode is generally safer than forced mode, but isn't on the free version - and it can take a very long time to load the log if it's a big package, such as an Adobe Creative Suite

Its ok, its an old question and one that I edited extensively while it was closed
so no biggie

okay :)

Bob
@Ricket The problem with Revo 'forced' mode it it searches for text strings - which could accidentally remove more than you want, or miss what should be removed. Not too reliable for bigger software packages.
The uninstaller that comes with the program should know exactly what is safe to remove (except shared libraries, since other programs may also be using them)

5:08 AM
If I am running with a dedicated graphics card, should I uninstall the drivers for the embedded graphics card?

Bob
Revo is sometimes helpful with crappy uninstallers that miss things, though.

@njallam Why would you do that? I can't see any good coming of it
I mean, nothing bad would probably happen either, but I don't think the driver is making an impact on the dedicated card driver or something if that's your thought

@Ricket The dedicated card is NVIDIA and the internal one is AMD. I figured it would just be more useless Windows services running for a device I'm not using.

Well if you installed extra programs with them then sure... But I'd keep the driver itself installed probably
Or just disable the services and autorun entries and call it a day

hmm, OK

5:15 AM
Just my opinion though! :)

Bob
Eh, I just spent an hour cleaning (i.e. annihilating) the four or five different versions of the Nvidia drivers I had installed...

Well, I seem to still have the AMD drivers installed but with no uninstall entry...

Bob
I hope that's what was causing driver crashes, and not a dying card :\

Does AMD have a dedicated uninstaller tool?

Bob
@njallam Is it not in Programs and Features (assuming Win7)?

5:20 AM
@Bob Strangely not.

Bob
@njallam So, you do have the Catalyst Control Center installed, right?

@Bob yes but with no uninstaller entry.

Bob
Perhaps under ATI?

nope, searched every entry under A and C
The only solution I can think of is to reinstall and then complete uninstall
Only trouble is I forgot what model my embedded card is...
And autodetect can't find it because I'm going through the dedicated card

probably Intel something

5:24 AM
Wait... ATI Radeon HD 4xxx series is an embedded card right?

Well it's official... I just accepted my first ever full time position! Now I'm going to be working for the man for the rest of my life :P

congrats
@njallam mobility Radeon is, Radeon isn't

HELLO SEXY MANS
I have a question.

oh hey @JeffAtwood is here!

:O It's @JeffAtwood

5:27 AM
I'm trying to do that and failing badly

holy. Jeff Atwood exists.

:D

@JeffAtwood what's the connection from the router to the switch for?

Do we get like a badge for meeting Jeff or something?
5
Also, I just discovered that every ATI installer comes with a complete uninstaller. Doh.

5:29 AM
@JeffAtwood: turn off DHCP on the middle router
plug router to router through 'regular' ethernet ports

@JourneymanGeek is that a router or a switch? cuz it looks like a switch to me @JeffAtwood

@KronoS: I've done this before. Had the same problem ;p

In fact, its on superuser

lol

5:30 AM
well I could have sworn I had the top image somewhere else

the router is not a WRT54GL in this case but it probably doesn't matter. Anyways, plugging the switch and router in is just totally ... not working

Aha! It is a switch! :P @JourneymanGeek

I tried regular cable and crossover cable. I have this nifty Universal Network Cable thing thinkgeek.com/product/c890

lol, its the basic process. I had done it with a dlink that rightfully had been left downstairs
@JeffAtwood: could you give more details on the orange box?
(thats an entirely technical term for it!)

5:33 AM
Ahh... Nevermind my scissors image. I thought you were trying to STOP data from flowing, when you said "data does not flow here" and then "i'm trying to do that"

eheh, we have two people who're doing nothing but asking windows 8 questions.
@Ricket: THE SPICE DATA MUST FLOW!
@JeffAtwood: ya, set that router to have a known, static IP, turn off DHCP on it

morning all

oh frig

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Turning NAT off (if the router has that option) and leaving the router connected to the WAN port could also work, and save a port. But since it's a switch, this shouldn't matter...?

5:35 AM
@Bob: naw, its the switch thats the issue

@JeffAtwood I'm assuming that's a managed switch?

I don't know much about nicer switches, damned my limited budget ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I meant if it were two routers.

note that I am plugging the switch into the LAN port on the router, not the WAN (upstream) port

i'm gonna be captain obvious here... firmware update?

5:36 AM
@JeffAtwood: Well, that got me the last time

@JeffAtwood Is your router the main connection to ISP?

per the diagram on smallnetbuilder.com/lanwan/lanwan-basics/… this is supposed to work
essentially the goal is just "gee, I wish my router had SIXTEEN ethernet LAN ports instead of merely FOUR!"
that's it

how do you make this pretty pics? never mind. you copy from blogs

@JeffAtwood okay, I'm just guessing here but essentially you'd just have to connect your switch to one of the LAN ports and be done with it?
And disable whatever fancy stuff the switch does
But I haven't read further up, so I might just state the obvious and you guys already know it :P

switch isn't doing anything fancy though, it's just a switch. And yes switch has latest firmware, etc

5:38 AM
'fancy stuff' is probably the problem here
@JeffAtwood: do you have anything connected directly to your router?

Because that's exactly how I set it up at home. Run a cable from one of the router's LAN ports to a 4 port switch and extend it that way.

what IP address ranges are the systems on either end of the switches in?

the router has an upstream connection (should be irrelevant) connected to the WAN port.. but on the LAN side just one computer at the moment, this one. It works because I'm using it to type this for you
the minute I connect the router to the switch LAN ports and connect this computer to the switch, no pings, no connection, no nothin'

router is not using DHCP at the moment, all IP ranges hard-coded on it on the LAN side

5:40 AM
hmm, so the problem is at the switch

172.16.0.x

This is weird. But then it's definitely the switch that's b0rked

or the routing

the switch looks like it likes the connection to the router, it shows up as green on the front panel

ugh
I know someone who might know this. He's not awake tho

5:41 AM
@slhck I think that this is more than just a 4 port switch though.... it looks more like the smart ones
but could be wrong there

technically the switch does have an IP address for its management console, but the switch as I use it is just meant to be a dumb, but capable of handling lots of potential bandwidth, switch

Bob
It's funny how everyone suddenly showed up/stopped lurking when Jeff entered...

@KronoS Yeah it is, that's what I meant with "fancy stuff" before. I'm happy with my NETGEAR 5-port one :P

switch works fine for individual computers connected to it, I can plug in two PCs into the switch and they can ping each other etc

Where's @WillHillsum when you need him :P

5:43 AM
@JeffAtwood: does the switch do DHCP, or are the IP addresses hardcoded?

@JeffAtwood then it might be routing

it's just when you plug the router into the switch, it's supposed to work to "extend" the number of ports on the router but does not at all. Doesn't matter if I use regular or crossover ethernet cable either
switch does not do any DHCP

@JeffAtwood Shouldn't use a crossover there anyway, the switch "crosses" the connection so to speak

I know that is supposed to work, but it wasn't, so I tried both regular and crossover cables

@JeffAtwood cross over won't work
I wish I could browse through your router/switch settings :/

5:45 AM
this PC is 172.16.0.69 ; router is 172.16.0.239. Switch is not giving out IP addresses at all.
my problem is I need the router to have more than 4 ethernet LAN ports

@slhck There's no "crossing" really, the traffic is just relayed. The only time there's a need for crossover is direct PC to PC communication
@JeffAtwood the router is basically a switch with the router built on top

I mean this whole article smallnetbuilder.com/lanwan/lanwan-basics/… says "yep, just plug in a switch to extend the number of LAN ports on your router, it's so easy!" but IT NO WORK FOR ME
lemme get out my laptop

Have you tried connecting to the WAN (upstream) port?

@JeffAtwood: my guess is they're using DHCP. The problem probably is with setting default routes or some other serious witchcraft like that. ;p

@KronoS Well, then he'd have no internet :P

5:48 AM
@slhck I know... just curious though

no, the WAN port is incorrect
all we want to do here is bridge one switch with another. But It No Bridge
ok so laptop is connected to the LAN port on the router. And the router has a LAN connection to the switch.
now I shall move the laptop to the SWITCH..
(I can get to the internet, etc with laptop.. so it's working)
yeah, the minute I move the laptop to the switch.. nothing. Can't ping 172.16.0.239 (the router) or anything.
technically, by having the switch plugged into the router LAN port.. they are supposed to be bridged!

Have you tried turning on DHCP on router to see if that fixes it?

I don't see how that would fix it

With static IP there may be weird voodu static routes as well

watch, I will plug this PC (desktop) into the switch and try to ping the laptop. To prove that the switch is indeed working. One sec.

5:52 AM
@JeffAtwood They are. I believe you said all lights of ports with cables in them would come up as green when you do that?

(kinda shootin in the dark here)

yeah, when I plug the laptop and PC both into the switch, they can ping each other just fine
what's specifically failing is this concept, per smallnetbuilder.com/lanwan/lanwan-basics/… , that you can bridge the router with a switch

what's the IP address for the devices on the switch?

172.16.0.239 router, 172.16.0.69 desktop, 172.16.0.10 laptop

> router is 172.16.0.239
is that your issue?

5:55 AM
the switch is 10.0.0.239

@JeffAtwood don't they need to be same network (ip range)?

really, the IP of the switch is irrelevant.. please ignore that
it's just a switch
that you can opt to "manage" at that IP.. or not at all
but generally you plug stuff into it, and that stuff can see each other

Whoa, it's Jeff. Long time no see 'round here.

I know... but my experience has been that these "switches" are a little more sometimes
meaning they thing they're smart
when they should be dumb

yeah, I tend to agree that there must be something the switch is doing to interfere with this bridging, somehow.. but what?

5:58 AM
I'm not sure... that's why I'm thinking that it might be good to keep everything on the same ip range

removes another possible suspect (though slim it may be)

Bob
At a glance, the 'protected ports' and IP based ACLs are a little odd for a switch...

@Bob that's normal for a switch of this type

Bob
@KronoS Could it be defaulting to overly restrictive settings, though?

6:01 AM
@Bob it could be..
@JeffAtwood you made sure to turn off DHCP on switch right? (can't remember if we already covered this)
And as a completely side note... why did you get this type of switch? This seems slightly overkill for a home network

yes, DCHP is off on the switch

just makin sure

this switch has optical uplinks for combining switches (to preserve bandwidth, etc). My only guess at this point is that it is disallowing combining switches via regular ethernet ports in favor of that
but I can't find anything in the management UI that says "bridging" about anything, e.g. it does not appear disabled

stupid question, but does that switch have a "reset" button?

it does, but I don't want to press it, because I configured two VLANs
if I do that, I'd have to reconfigure
VLAN just means "treat this switch like two mini-switches"
e.g. 8 ports can only see each other on those 8 ports.. ditto for the other 8 ports

6:07 AM
I see

Bob
Well, the obvious question: are the computer and router on the same VLAN? :P

yes, they are
I already verified that two PCs plugged into these ports can ping each other all day long
what's specifically failing, and I don't know why, is plugging a switch into that port
e.g. It Not Bridge
the port lights up green correctly though, so the LEDs think it's valid and working

Ya that tells me that the switch is doing something weird

Hummm. I think at that point we'd just suggest to ask on the main site proper and see if anyone else has more experience with that particular kind of switch.

Bob
@JeffAtwood If there's some way to backup the current configuration, it may be worth trying a clean config and restoring if that doesn't work.

6:14 AM
@JeffAtwood is that the interface that you see on the switch ^^

@bob yeah, but configuring the VLAN required a zillion clicks, really would rather not do that (again). And if I've plugged two machines into the same ports and seen them ping each other, that kinda rules out any massive config problem
it could be something subtle about switch-to-switch that I don't understand yet, but I find no mention of this in the manual

Bob
If it is possible to backup the current configuration, you should be able to restore without reconfiguring... but yea, probably not going to help :\

Q: How to connect multiple switches together?

webnoobI have 4 "NETGEAR ProSafe GS724T Gigabit Smart Switch" that will need connecting to each other. I am not sure of the best way to go about this. Normally, I would just daisy chain them or hook all switches into 1 switch so there is only one hop for data. Is there a better way to connect these swi...

@JeffAtwood Meaning between the router and the switch or the to vlans?

Q: Stacking two Netgear GS748TS switches via HDMI - only 1Gbps trunk bandwidth?

ilumosI have two Netgear GS748TS 48 port gigabit stackable switches, which when stacked via two HDMI cables allow hosts on one of the switches to talk to hosts on the other. Netgear claim that the HDMI trunk allows for 10Gbps of bandwidth, but when I test using 4 computers and iperf, it appears that o...

oh weird some of them use HDMI cables to connect switches now. That's clever
ah wait I had an idea
ok I know what it is now
it was the VLAN; the router is not tagging its traffic as being part of the vlan
when I move it to the default VLAN, it works
that should only be an issue for switch-to-switch stuff
GREAT WORK EVERYONE, UPVOTES ALL AROUND

6:27 AM
yay!

tomato does have a VLAN settings page

I'm glad you got it
@JeffAtwood you should do a SU Blog post about it ;)

yeah definitely confirmed; plug the 2 cables into one vlan side (default) ping works, plug them in the other side (vlan 4) no work

@JeffAtwood I thought that you had already tried that :P

I just changed the defalt VLAN to 4 on the router
let me see if that helps
one sec, rebooting router
"There's lots of things that could go wrong, please do think about what you're doing and take a backup before hitting the 'Save' button on this page!
You've been warned!" eek
yeah I'm nervous about changing the VLAN in Tomato. Massive "WARNING" disclaimers all over the place

6:32 AM
oh I thought you talking about physcially changing the ports

I'm just gonna switch port 4 to VLAN 4 on the router that seems a lot less risky
so there, port 4 is vlan 4. Let's see if it works
nope :(
let me try switching all LAN ports to vlan 4

Bob
@JeffAtwood What about the tagging? From the switch manual you posted:
> Each VLAN in a network has an associated VLAN ID, which appears in the IEEE 802.1Q tag in the Layer 2 header of packets transmitted on a VLAN. An end station may omit the tag, or the VLAN portion of the tag, in which case the first switch port to receive the packet may either reject it or insert a tag using its default VLAN ID. A given port may handle traffic for more than one VLAN, but it can only support one default VLAN ID.

ok I'm still on the 'net so nothing horribly broken .. yet
yay, now it works on the Netgear Prosafe as well
yeah so basically I just told tomato "hey, every port is on VLAN 4"
versus the default of 1
going to move the desktop over and see
great, now I am connected through the netgear switch instead of the router proper as well
I guess the easier way to do this is to buy multiple physical switches, but overkill-y
e.g. if you want to isolate traffic between two networks, you could buy two switches, or, configure one switch so that there's two VLANs that can't see each other at the physical layer
printing out a label to put on the front of the router that says "vlan4" so this is clear
the switch is already labeled on each side

Gee, I always wanted to have such a labeling machine.

is that in german?

Heh. We have a non-fancy version of this at our office. I might just borrow it some time, nobody ever uses it anyway.

I was trying to figure out how to get one to slhck

@JeffAtwood :P

anywhere there is an Amazon it is surprisingly easy provided you can push through the language differences

6:50 AM
@JeffAtwood Yeah, I just ran into some issues back then with the SU contest vouchers because they wouldn't allow you to use a U.S. voucher in other countries and vice-versa.

this vlan issue makes sense, because packets on the switch side would be 'tagged' with the vlan. But once you cross switches, those tags would not make it over.
e.g. vlan 1 traffic was being sent to a vlan 4 port, so it was discarded

Makes sense after all, yeah

whereas when I plug my computer INTO the switch, the switch says "oh I will tag you as vlan 4"
that does not happen when you cross a switch boundary. "We're vlan 4 here, eff off with your crazy vlan 1 traffic"
honestly if you have access to a label printer easier to borrow. not something you use all the time.. unless you have OCD something awful
I'm just labelling the servers and network equipment in the build, per:

Heh. I'm pretty sure I'd develop an OCD with labels. It's a family thing, my grandfather used to do it all the time.
He would label each and every single cable with colored isolating tape so you'd know what to plugin where.

he sounds like my kind of people

6:55 AM
argg, I hate HP!

have you ever seen IPMI? It is just KVM over Internet, but it is kind of amazing. More of a Server Fault type thing: superuser.com/search?q=ipmi (10) vs serverfault.com/search?q=ipmi (242)

@JeffAtwood So how loud is your server actually?

@njallam welcome to the party

@JeffAtwood: definately a server thng

it's nutty to be remotely looking at a BIOS on a server

6:57 AM
@nhinkle I mean, don't bother asking me first if you want to reboot my system, just go ahead and do it why don't you...

@njallam Sounds like a typical Windows move.

@njallam: obviously, they know better than you do.

@JeffAtwood are you virtualizing your servers?

tho, HP or the OS?

hey, who has experience writing xml schemas?

6:58 AM
these servers are amazing, I could not believe my eyes.. 25 watts at idle, for a quad core ivy bridge 4.0 Ghz turbo chip (3.6 Ghz standard)

@JourneymanGeek I was running a HP uninstaller

@KronoS: as far as I can tell, thats a console for remote KVM

for 1U they are astoundingly quiet, the mobo headers control the three 40mm fans

@nhinkle ya you've had your share of hateful experiences with HP

@jokerdino: used to, years ago.

6:58 AM

hm, will ping you when necessary

Bob
@slhck Not so typical, except the automatic updates.

@KronoS aye to that

I had to sweat blood to get my HTPC build down to 18 watts.. now I built a FRIGGING SERVER with 32gb of ram, two 512gb SSDs, etc and it idles at 25 watts
incredible
and only 90w at full CPU load too

@jokerdino: If you gimme till tommorrow afternoon, I'll go find my textbooks. xml schemas are VERY ad hoc tho

6:59 AM
o.O

well fellas... it's time for bed for me. I have a test to study for all day tomorrow.

@JeffAtwood That's like a really old lightbulb! ( I can no longer just say lightbulb because they have become much more efficient)

@nhinkle lol, classic
