hmm @Gareth
isn't that valid markdown to hyperlink an image?
[![][4]][4]

yeah it is, where was that from?

trying to hyperlink this one: superuser.com/questions/325891/…
image disappears when doing so

that's really weird
i've seen it a lot of times
but not disappearing

ah I'll just file a bug on meta

2:13 PM
it definitely worked yesterday because I did one - must be something broken
ah wait...
I think I know...

didn't work for him as well: meta.superuser.com/questions/2164/…

ok it's definitely recent

A: What's the recommended syntax for an image with a link?

Kyle CroninIt is possible to use Markdown for both the image and the link. You'll have to do it manually because, as you said, the toolbar isn't smart enough to do it for you: [![alt text][2]][1] [1]: http://meta.stackoverflow.com/users/44330/jason-s [2]: http://www.gravatar.com/avatar/dd5a7ef1476fb01...

see that image? and it's linked as well
but if you go to edit, it blanks it

oh well

Q: Eeeek! Why is this image disappearing while embedding it?

slhckI'm trying to make the image in this post clickable. So I follow these instructions: [![alt text][4]][4] but .... Eeeek! The image disappears! This also doesn't work: [![alt text][4]](http://i.stack.imgur.com/hTc6L.jpg) What's going on? This used to work before. Chrome Dev on OS X, doesn'...

woah, this is weird

Q: Visio alternatives

Jason SI need an alternative to Visio for making diagrams (particularly signal processing block diagrams) that includes some kind of custom stencils + connection points. I just spent 2 hours learning bits and pieces of Dia only to find that it has no rotational capabilities, not even 90 degree rotations...

guy asked a question in Aug 2009. answered it 2 minutes ago and accepted it!

haha, very nice

2:20 PM
suggested edit on that image link one now
can't really approve it because the feature's broken :)

heh :P
you could upvote my bug report if you like

I thought I had! sorry. +1

oh, the suggested edit was Cody from meta.SO trying it out

ah
SU seems very quiet
peak EU time, US morning

obviously
I think I'll go to the park later today

2:26 PM
no I mean I'm really surprised. I thought activity would kick off round about now, but if anything, it's quieter than earlier
is it a nice day there?

29 degrees, clear, 35% humidity :)

nice! def. get to the park!

2:41 PM
yeah, I'm off for now, have a nice evening @Gareth!

see you @slhck! have a nice time

Hi people!

Rob
6:47 PM
Anyone around?

Yep
Though I haven't seen him around for a while could Someone Else or A.N.Other help at all?

@Mokubai Lololol

:)

@Rob Is there anything you needed?
@SimonSheehan That's pretty darn awesome :P

Indeed. I'm tempted to invest in an SSD for my PS3 :P

7:03 PM
@SimonSheehan Doesn't a PS3 perform a lot of writes?

@BloodPhilia A fair bit, but it would really help for games. I play Metal Gear Solid 4, and im constantly having to read data, and every chapter requires it to be written.
I'm still investigating into it

@SimonSheehan Make sure you make a backup then :P

Rob
@BloodPhilia Yea, wondering if anything other than bad audio card or bad playback device could cause audio to stop functioning under both Windows & Linux

@BloodPhilia Already on it :P Thankfully the ps3 comes with a backup utility

Rob
My gut says no

7:04 PM
I think I read an article on failing SSD's on Codinghorror, @JeffAtwoot's blog

Indeed, there were 8 SSD's, and they all failed within 2 years

Rob
I hear the ps3's vector processors are beastly at md5 hashing

@Rob Well, if it doesn't work on Linux AND Windows, it's probably a hardware issue.

They are becoming more reliable

Rob
That's what I thought :p

7:05 PM
@SimonSheehan Still, I wouldn't use them as data drives for my production server :P

@BloodPhilia It is becoming easier and more affordable, but I hear using 10k RPM drives cost half the price

@SimonSheehan True that, SSD's are not yet ready for use as data drives
HDD's are more reliable and a lot cheaper

@BloodPhilia Indeed, it's hard to decide these days

@SimonSheehan Not for me...
Not yet anyway

7:07 PM
haha

Rob
MD5 is not safe, but I guess we've known that for a while now...
What's preventing reliability in SSD's?

@Rob Lol, I always use SHA-512 in my systems
@Rob SSD's have a limited number of write cycles... If you use it for user data storage, data that is very dynamic and lots of writes are needed, the drive will fail considerably sooner than a classic HDD

Rob
Hm
Are SSD's flash or DRAM based?

Flash
But since SSD's are much faster than HDD's, it is worth putting the OS on one.

Rob
DRAM seems more promising, but I have no idea what barriers it would present
Less expensive, already reliable for large amounts of read/writes

7:13 PM
Well there are SSD's with DRAM
But I think Flash is more commonly used at the moment

Rob
I will have to pay attention in the next few years as they mature, see if that changes

@Rob Well the thing is that DRAM SSD's are more expensive
And need their own, independent power source
since it contains volatile memory

Rob
Ahh yea
And DRAM isn't quite as compact in respect to capacity, is it?

@Rob I'm not sure about that to be honest

Rob
Haha neither am I... I'm no hardware expert
Anyhow, seems I need a new soundcard
Off to the store, bye all

7:19 PM
@Rob Well good luck!

'ello!

@slhck Hey!
I've been following your work here at SU! Very, very nice work/progress!

@BloodPhilia Hey, haven't seen you in a while!
thank you! :)

Great participation and quite an addition :D
Even though I've been absent from participation, I've been spying on you guys... Following your every move :D
Just been creating Tag wiki's all evening xD

ooohhh a lurker :D

7:34 PM
@slhck You bet

oh those nasty tag wikis!
sure deserve some attention

@slhck In what respect?

oh, just content-wise

@slhck Existing ones? Or you mean creating new ones
I've been wanting to hit 20k so I can edit freely

@BloodPhilia Primarily the empty ones -- there are so many of them

7:36 PM
@slhck I've been filling a few

the 20k cap is a bit high I'd say

But there are just some that don't need filling
Like the tag
@slhck Ah well, I'm at 13k already xD

@BloodPhilia yup, see my comments here meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/103138/…

@slhck Yep, I agree
I just got a captcha

oh, you trying to spam? :P @BloodPhilia

7:47 PM
@slhck No :(

@BloodPhilia The triggers for the captcha are quite weird – but I do have to say, we don't get a lot of spam!

@slhck True!
There, another wiki :D
@slhck 22 wiki edits in total today :D That should be enough! I call it a day xD

@BloodPhilia Very nice, thank you for doing it :)

@slhck Lolol... You're welcome? xD

(I just think a "thank you" is appropriate once in a while :P)

7:59 PM
@slhck Well thanks! :P
@slhck "BloodPhilia had 45 edit suggestions approved, and 0 edit suggestions rejected." Oh yeah :D

o, rly
> Count of errors: The number of memory errors encountered
o, rly?
@BloodPhilia that's what I'm talking 'bout!

What?

Your answer!

8:14 PM
Oh!
it's your question xD
Didn't even see

haha, yep, I mean, not that I wouldn't know how to research it myself
I just thought a question like that was missing

:D Well, does this suit your question well?

much better than the other one
I was just hoping for more details

I'm still editing... :D

It's not that I have a current problem to solve, it might just be helpful to have a Q/A on this here and if there's a question about memory testing, we can show those users :)

8:23 PM
@slhck how does that look?

very nice @BloodPhilia

@slhck I'll add a small description of the entire screen

getting some good responses now
oh that would be awesome! @BloodPhilia

Hey @Werner

Hey there @Gigili, what's up?

8:26 PM
@slhck Nothing, as always. how are you?

@Gigili Pretty fine, thanks! So I see there's a German.SE site? Didn't know that!

@slhck There is. would be nice to see you there.

@Gigili Just checking it out, already signed up!

Nice.
You don't have a G+ account, right? @slhck

I do, I just accidentally removed my profile link

8:35 PM
Alright, have fun. TTYL @slhck

thanks @Gigili you too!

@slhck Check answer :D

@BloodPhilia Really great. I'd accept it, but I'll leave it open so the votes can flow in for you :P

@slhck Hahaha XD
It's okay! I like writing nice answers like these :D
@slhck How've you been anyway? (:

@BloodPhilia Pretty fine, mixing vacation with relaxing, nice weather, and a bit of programming, so I really can't complain!
How about you?

8:44 PM
Been busy! Working a lot, prepping for a new year of college!
Luckily I've been able mix in some holiday fun :D

what do you do while prepping for college? :D

@slhck Ordering books, reading books :D
And I've been trying to get a little bit more involved in SU again

oh, those things .... made out of paper, right?
I've really been neglecting my reading :/
Yeah haven't seen you around lately, but it's fine to take a break

@slhck Yes xD paper
@slhck I've been around! following you guys a bit :D

Oh, I finally got edit privileges on Stack Overflow :o
That probably means I shouldn't visit the site anymore

8:51 PM
@slhck I'm not on SO xD
Daily vote limit reached

@BloodPhilia Well, it's a difficult place anyway.

Hi @Simon

Hey again @BloodPhilia and @slhck :)

Hey @SimonSheehan!

How's it going?

8:58 PM
Pretty good -- spent the evening in the park with a good friend, later went to eat out, now just chilling :D

Sounds like an evening well spent

huh?

@slhck edited, got too many chats going >.<

aaah @BloodPhilia you beat me!

@slhck What/

9:00 PM
@BloodPhilia The "not an answer" comment thing
Was just gonna post the same
@SimonSheehan So where else are you chatting?

@slhck Multiple IRC networks, and skype.

I used to Skype a lot but I got annoyed by it not having @-mentions and the stuff SE chat has :P

hey @Mokubai!
haven't seen you in a while, too!

Hey @slhck, how've you been?

9:03 PM
@slhck indeed, I get invited to way too many group chats, it gets confusing :P Lucky IRC has highlighting

Aye, went dark for a while, lurking but working....

@Mokubai Hey!

Hey @BloodPhilia
How's you?

@slhck added detailed description of Memtests to answer
@Mokubai Fine thanks! How about yourself?

9:05 PM
Not too bad, got some holiday now so I can relax for a while :)

@BloodPhilia Very nice! I added what I thought was most important at the beginning if you don't mind!

Only 3 weeks of holidays left for me D:

@slhck Sounds nice and pleasant, pity there's no good parks near me
@SimonSheehan "only" 3 weeks huh?

@Mokubai That's too bad! I don't go out that often, but it's nice to have the opportunity

@Mokubai My summer seemed to fly by a bit :P

9:07 PM
@slhck Haha, TL;DR

good ol' TL;DR ;D

Not to mention my summer wasn't too eventful :P

hey guys... if you have a facebook then check out this startup I've been working on this weekend. Wanna know your honest thoughts:

@SimonSheehan There's an old chinese curse "may you live in interesting times"... sometimes "uneventful" is a good thing ;)

@Mokubai Interesting, could be :)

9:09 PM
@KronoS I saw that on G+, but couldn't work out what the heck it was supposed to be apart from t-shirts....
Sorry :(

@Mokubai I've updated the info on the facebook site.... we're still working out the bugs, but should be fully operational tonight
but basically it's this:
> Paper resumes are dead, LinkedIn is getting boring, and recruiters need a faster and more visual way to sift through your job experiences. Everyone has work T-Shirts. TShirtResume brings you the ability to link online pictures of your T-Shirts to your profile, giving you the visual edge for recruitment.

Cool, will check it out again in the morning :)

thanks dude

I've got a load of work t-shirts, but we're not allowed to wear them any more. Our logo has changed a couple of times so old shirts become obsolete and marketing told us "Thou Shalt Not Wear Old T-Shirts!"
@SimonSheehan In my younger years I read Terry Pratchett a lot, there was one character in a lot of his books who just longed to be left stranded on a desert island where nothing unexpected happens... he tended to be the unwilling recipient of "adventures" :)

@Mokubai I'm actually in the progress of re-reading all the Harry Potter books currently :)

9:16 PM
Wow, that's freaky, I'm near the end of the first book....

Haha. Enjoying it?

Aye, I've read them all a few times already though.

Ah okay, cool.
Just checked this stat on a tracker I have..
iSimon has been a participant since 2011-02-27 (6 months ago), and in that time has typed 3,150,640 keys, clicked 878,525 times and moved his or her mouse for 46.3 miles

I like books, films are a big let-down these days
46 miles eh?

Indeed, I can't stand many books to films now
They kind of killed the final movie for me, because they skipped some really good parts
anyways, dinner time, be back later

9:19 PM
Films just seem to be painfully repetitive these days, I watched Tron:Legacy and couldn't help thinking that it was basically just the same story as the last Star Trek movie but with Tron characters and graphics....

enjoy @SimonSheehan!

@SimonSheehan enjoy!

I think I'll call it a day, sooo tired :(

Fair enough, g'night @slhck

see you all around!

2 hours later…
10:58 PM
@Sathya - sorry, that was related to the picture with the penis in it! basically... my brothers university didn't allow wireless and just gave one ethernet port to every room, mac filtered and you have to register... so... I hid a router inside his computer and forged the mac address!
Why can't this chat room freeze when I am not here - makes it hard when I go out!
(Sorry, catching up on Chat messages...) Me, @Mokubai, @Linker3000, @DMA57361 and very sorry if I have left anyone out should start speaking Chav English instead of British English... That will confuse you @Sathya @Gareth!!!!
Alright bruv!
